The second half of the eighties was arguably the greatest run of FA Cup Finals and this season's may sit above them all. From the fourth round victory at Old Trafford, Coventry City's joint managerial team of John Sillett and George Curtis were adamant that this could be their year. Standing in the Wembley Way would be a Spurs side whose treble dreams had faded but who still had the opportunity to send Glenn Hoddle off in style. Author Richard Chamberlain joins us to discuss the most famous season in Coventry's history as well as some other great FA Cup stories along the way. Rio is joined by Ste Howson and Joel Beya to react to the end of the Premier League season - including why Bruno Fernandes deserves to be Player of the Year and why Rio believes his numbers alongside better attacking players next season could be “a madness”.The trio also discuss Michael Carrick's future at Manchester United, the scale of the rebuild still needed at Old Trafford and whether signing Robert Lewandowski on a free transfer would actually make sense for the club.Arsenal's title-winning season is another obvious talking point, with Rio insisting Mikel Arteta deserves enormous credit for surviving years of criticism and finally ending Manchester City's dominance. There's also a brilliant debate around Pep Guardiola's legacy and why Rio still believes Sir Alex Ferguson remains the greatest manager of all time.Plus the lads hand out their end-of-season awards, react to Aston Villa's guard of honour - Rio says why Mohamed Salah showed exactly how those moments should be handled and there's some hints about some huge plans for the summer and the World Cup. As everyone awaits confirmation of Michael Carrick being named as Manchester United manager, Rio is joined by Ste Howson and Joel Beya to discuss the reasons INEOS have finally backed him, whether the fanbase is truly united behind the decision and why Rio believes the club now has no choice but to fully commit to the ‘Carrick project'.The trio debate criticism around Carrick's appointment, the idea he's somehow landed the role “by default” and what his football identity actually is. Rio also insists Carrick “won't give a s**t” about criticism from pundits like Roy Keane and Gary Neville, while Ste argues United barely have any genuinely pro-United voices left in mainstream punditry. There's also huge praise for Casemiro following “Rio Meets Casemiro” and the standing ovation he received at Old Trafford, which leads Rio into a reflection on the Brazilian's overall cost to Manchester United and whether his impact has justified the huge transfer fee and wages.Bruno Fernandes becomes another major talking point as the lads debate where he ranks amongst the Premier League's modern greats. Rio argues Bruno deserves more respect because of the level of Manchester United teams he's been carrying, while Ste explains why the club's barren spell actually makes him even more valuable to supporters. The conversation also turns to Xabi Alonso's shock move to Chelsea, with Ste calling him the most exciting coach in world football and Rio questioning why he didn't wait for an opportunity to take over Arne Slot at Liverpool.Plus there's insight into what Casemiro really thinks about Bruno behind the scenes and why Rio believes Fernandes would have taken Manchester United's 2008 Champions League-winning side to another level. Vítor's Reds went to Old Trafford, and while the home team had more chances, Forest were ultimately robbed by a pivotal decision by Michael Salisbury, who was the only man in football who thought that Matheus Cunha's goal should stand, after Bryan Mbeumo's obvious handball. Even VAR recommended that the goal should be chalked off after a 3-4 min review, but after staring at it for another 90 seconds, the ref stuck to his guns. Fortunately Forest are already safe this season. George and Tom report after returning from Manchester, still in disbelief at the decision, but full of praise for the Head Coach, players and Forest supporters, as goals from Morato and Gibbs-White were not enough to get a result against United's 12th man. #1007 | Ed and Dan review Manchester United's 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest in the final home game of the season. More than 4 xG created, 29 shots taken and Bruno Fernandes' 20th assist. Plenty of entertainment on offer. It's Michael Carrick's 11th win of his short tenure, but he's found a way for United to keep emerging victorious from these narrow-margin games. It was a day when Casemiro said farewell to Old Trafford, Luke Shaw scored his first goal for three years, and Bryan Mbeumo eventually got on the scoresheet too. There was some controversy about Matteus Cunha's goal, although rules are rules, innit? Inevitably, the conversation turns to the summer. Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Jacqui Oatley, Jason Burt and Mark Ogden to reflect on the weekend's sporting action. We kick things off with Man City's FA Cup win, edging Chelsea 1-0, as Chelsea appoint Xabi Alonso as their new manager; is Jason right to suggest they've lucked out with Alonso? We discuss the fallout at full time, a less-than-satisfactory version of VAR, and the controversial midweek decision — before asking whether the arrival of Tony Bloom could turn Hearts into a genuine third force in Scottish football.Next, to news that Michael Carrick is set to get the Manchester United job on a permanent basis. Danyal Khan joins us from Old Trafford to reflect on Casemiro's farewell and Carrick's final home game of the season — but just how excited should United fans be by news of his potential two-year contract extension? Finally, another damaging defeat for Liverpool on Friday night, conceding four against Aston Villa and limping over the line for Champions League qualification. Rio is joined by Ste Howson and Joel Beya to break down Manchester United's frustrating performance against Sunderland and why the reaction from some fans has gone completely over the top. While Ste labels the display “terrible”, Rio pushes back on the idea that one bad performance should suddenly end the discussion around Michael Carrick's future - arguing that supporters are being disrespectful both to Sunderland and to the wider rebuilding process at Old Trafford. The trio also debate what United's squad should look like moving forward, including which players Ste believes should leave the club, the recruitment strategy INEOS are finally getting right and why goalkeeper Lammens could end up winning the Players' Player of the Year award.Rio also gives insight into the mentality needed inside elite dressing rooms after Aurélien Tchouaméni was fined for repeatedly striking team-mate Ernesto Valverde at Real Madrid - explaining why arguments between players are often a positive sign and revealing how former Rangers manager Walter Smith actively encouraged fights during training sessions during his time at Manchester United. There's also a heated discussion around Bruno Fernandes winning the Football Writers' Award over Declan Rice and Erling Haaland, with Rio insisting that football awards should be based on performances rather than sportsmanship or narratives.Plus Rio explains why Marcus Rashford could still be one of the bargains of the summer transfer window, why David Raya may have just won Arsenal the Premier League title and why he believes Arsenal could now be favourites for the Champions League. And as always, there's chaos around VAR decisions, bizarre rule change suggestions and a typically fiery debate between Rio and Ste over what Manchester United fans should actually expect from this current team. Arsenal's title race took another dramatic turn after Everton F.C. stunned Manchester City F.C. in one of the biggest results of the Premier League season — and The NN Pod reacts to the chaos, the psychology, and what it means heading into the final stretch. The panel opens with a full Whip Around the Grounds from Matchweek 35, including defeats for Chelsea F.C., Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. and Liverpool F.C., the race for Europe, Spurs' win over Aston Villa F.C., and the growing tension at both ends of the table.VARse returns with a breakdown of the weekend's biggest officiating moments, including the Dean Henderson collision against A.F.C. Bournemouth, the delayed handball angle at Old Trafford, and the Michael Oliver controversy during Everton vs Manchester City. The panel debates “rules is rules”, forensic VAR analysis, and whether consistency in officiating is becoming impossible.Attention then turns to the title race after Everton's dramatic comeback against Manchester City. The hosts discuss the emotional swing of the evening, Rodri's absence, Manchester City's defensive vulnerability, Arsenal's mentality heading into the run-in, and why the Emirates atmosphere for the Champions League semi-final felt inevitable after the result at “Dick Hill”.The conversation then shifts to European football, with detailed reaction to Paris Saint-Germain F.C. vs FC Bayern Munich and what Arsenal could face in a potential Champions League final. There's discussion around Luis Enrique's tactical discipline, Ousmane Dembélé's threat, Manuel Neuer's decline, PSG's defensive structure, fixture congestion, and the growing gap between Premier League demands and the rest of Europe.Elsewhere, the pod reacts to Coventry City F.C. and Ipswich Town F.C. securing promotion to the Premier League, debates who should join them through the play-offs, reflects on Frank Lampard's managerial recovery, and discusses Jack Wilshere's season with Luton Town F.C..There's also discussion on Unai Emery's team selection decisions, the morality of weakened sides late in the season, and whether football's calendar is reaching breaking point.A huge week in football — and a huge week for Arsenal.
It was a blur of a weekend, with seismic results all over Europe! Musa and Ryan begin with Barcelona and Lyonnes getting past Bayern and Arsenal to make it to the UWCL final in Oslo (03:09), moving onto Inter securing their 21st Scudetto (11:37), Venezia making it back to Serie A and more, before heading to the Premier League.Manchester United secured Champions League football for next season (28:31), following their 3-2 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford, so there's chat about that as well as Liverpool's situation. Spurs made it two wins in two to get out of the relegation zone after their win at Villa Park and Bournemouth are one of Europe's most in form teams. Meanwhile, at the top, Arsenal had some key players back and looked sharper than they have in months to beat Fulham 3-0 and go six points clear (50:18) and there's a lot of praise for Myles Lewis-Skelly's performance, starting in midfield for the first time. Finally, there's some Bundesliga chat (56:33), as St. Pauli dropped into the relegation spots and Schalke won promotion back to the top flight.Don't forget to check out kickbacksoccer.com and tickets for our July live show, with Nish Kumar at the Southbank Centre, are available here. For more podcasts, ad-free and in full, plus access to the Stadio Social Club and much more, you can become a Stadio member by signing up at patreon.com/stadio. #998 | Ed and Daniel discuss Manchester United's win over Brentford at Old Trafford, leaving United on the brink of Champions League qualification. That's Michael Carrick's 10th win in 13 games as interim manager. It was another strong set of performances from Lammens, Maguire, and Heaven at the back and plenty of quality from Mainoo and Casemiro in midfield as well. With Champions League almost secure, the conversation turns to summer needs - especially the need for two elite midfielders plus fullback/wing depth. And is the squad ready for a 55–60 game season? Then we turn to the game against Liverpool at Old Trafford next weekend. 00:00 One Win Away 00:27 Match Reaction: United vs Brentford 01:53 Carrick's 10 Wins in 13 06:45 Goalkeeper: Lammens vs. His Predecessors 18:49 Casemiro's Farewell 29:26 How Good Is This United Side? 34:10 Amorim's Year Off and Kobbie's Contract 47:47 Liverpool Preview 56:46 Farewell If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts.
