Ruben Amorim has another problem to deal with at Old Trafford after two of his players took to social media this week to further push themselves towards the exit door. Alejandro Garnacho posted a picture to his instagram account of him wearing an Aston Villa shirt with Marcus Rashford's name on the back, leading to further speculation that he wants to leave the club in the coming months. Kelly Cates is joined by The i Paper's chief football writer Daniel Storey, Sports economist Victor A. Matheson & football finance expert Kieran Maguire, as they delve into the rising number of American owners across British football. It's 20 years since the Glazer family's highly-controversial and highly-leveraged takeover of Manchester United. Throughout those two decades, the Glazers have been the prime target of fan protests with “Glazers out” still ringing around Old Trafford. So over the course of this episode you'll hear why US investors are obsessed with British football, and how real are the concerns that US owners could collude to “Americanise” the traditions of English football from the removal of promotion and relegation to moving matches overseas and relocating clubs to other cities.

Manchester United have made a swift start to their summer transfer business with the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. The Brazilian looks set to improve Ruben Amorim's side immediately, but it's clear the Red Devils need more if they're to get back towards the top of the Premier League. Brentford's Brian Mbeumo is another name linked with a switch to Old Trafford, but does the French winger fit Amorim's system? Across Manchester, City are also planning to raid Wolves for one of their stars as Rayan Ait-Nouri continues to be heavily linked with the club in a big money move. AC Milan midfielder Tijani Reijnders is also closing in on a move as Pep Guardiola looks to revamp his squad after a poor season. It's our first podcast since the calamities of Bilbao, and we're not just talking about the football. Who is responsible for the series of events which led to leaving hundreds, maybe thousands, of fans stranded in a city that had essentially closed for business?Ruben Amorim's future had even seemed up in the air after that game, but it seems he has been reassured of his future by Manchester United's execs. He used the authority lent him by this vote of confidence to give Alejandro Garnacho marching orders. The Argentinian winger, and his entourage, were publicly critical of the head coach, which appears to have crossed a line. Fan reaction was mixed. The team went on to play Champions League chasers Aston Villa on Sunday before jetting off to Asia. The clean sheet and comfortable victory at Old Trafford was met with raised eyebrows as much as anything else, but Amorim addressed the crowd to a positive reaction... Now for the difficult part. If you watched the Netflix docuseries Sunderland ‘Til I Die, you saw a famous old English club that looked like dying. Two straight relegations for the Black Cats put these giants of the Northeast in a precarious position, and the man often tasked with guiding the viewer through all this tumult and heartbreak was Nick Barnes. As the Sunderland commentator for BBC Newcastle, he calls every game for radio, but he's also covered this club through thick and thin, many managers and even many owners. He's seen it all.And he'll see one more thing this Saturday, when Sunderland travel to Wembley to face Sheffield United in the Championship playoff final — the $200 million game. Whoever wins will play Premier League football next season and travel to Anfield, Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge, the Emirates Stadium. Whoever loses will be back in the Championship, going to Swansea.Either way, Barnes will be along for the ride. But first he joins The Football Weekend to trace Sunderland's path to this moment. If you're enjoying the show, please leave us a rating and review! It will help spread the good word. And as always, for kickoff times and storylines on all the other matches worth your time this weekend, check TheFootballWeekend.com. Hosted on Acast.
