Happy New Year! LaLiga is back and so are we, with our first Matchday review of 2026. The honour is for Matt Clark (@MattClark_08) and Román de Arquer (@Aeroslavee), who analyse this weekend's exciting fixtures. Who started the year strongest? Who will be wishing it's still Christmas.We start with the Catalan derby between Espanyol and Barça, which for many ended in an unfair result. Espanyol's admirable efforts were parried away by an towering Joan García, who was unfazed by the hostile environment in his return to the RCDE Stadium. Real Madrid's commanding win vs Betis follows, with Gonzalo eclipsing Mbappé's absence, and then we review Atleti's draw against Real Sociedad and Villarreal's victory toppling Elche's fortress.In Part Two, we look at the teams in the relegation battle, with a special focus on Girona climbing out at Valencia's expense, Levante grabbing a very big win at Sevilla and Oviedo deserving to win but ultimately failing to do so. Tal día como hoy, pero el 23 de diciembre de 1945, el Club Atlético-Aviación acogió a un combinado nacional en el Estadio Metropolitano para jugar el partido de homenaje a Ramón Gabilondo. Gabilondo jugó, como centrocampista, 211 partidos oficiales con el Atleti entre 1934 y 1946. Llegó fichado del R. Valladolid, donde debutó en 1928 y con el Atleti ganó 2 títulos de Liga consecutivos, los de las temporadas 1939-40 y 1940-41. Se retiró en 1946 como futbolista para dedicarse al ejercicio de la medicina, siguiendo ligado a la Federación como médico de la Mutualidad de futbolistas y, sobre todo, como técnico, pues llegó a ser entrenador de la  selección juvenil y de la absoluta durante 1 año y 4 meses. De las cosas de las que más orgulloso se sentía fue descubrir a Collar y ser un gran amigo de Gárate. En la Copa, el Atleti superó el trance del primer cruce ante el Atlético Balear con una victoria por 2-3. Partido sin mucha historia, más allá de certificar que hay ciertos jugadores que no tienen nivel para el Atleti, que tenemos un gran portero suplente en Musso y que Griezmann parece que tras el corte de pelo ha recuperado el olfato de gol y, que en el Marca siguen haciendo titulares con juegos de palabras más que previsibles. Esta ronda también ha servido para que unos cuantos primeras se apeen de la competición, que el Barça lo pasase regular, como el Atleti y, que los ciervos volvieran a experimentar lo que es ganar gracias a “errores arbitrales” que el VAR no puede corregir, vamos, robando como han hecho toda la vida. El próximo rival lo conoceremos el día  7 de enero cuando se celebre el sorteo de la eliminatoria de octavos de final a las 13:00. En la competición nacional Liguera, en partido disputado el domingo en el Estadio municipal de Montilivi, el Atleti cerró el año futbolístico con una nueva victoria lejos de casa, por 0-3, en la que logró mantener la portería a cero gracias a ese fardo, para algunos, que es Jan Oblak. Golazo del capitán, Koke para abrir el marcador en el minuto 13. Gallagher que entró sustituyendo a Nico González por lesión, logró el segundo en el minuto 38 y, cerró el marcador en el descuento Antoine Griezmann, que desde que se ha cortado el pelo, lleva 3 partidos consecutivos anotando.  Tras esta jornada, el Barça termina como campeón de invierno con 46 puntos, seguido por el Mal con 42 y el Atleti 3º con 37 puntos, por delante del Villarreal con 35 y 2 partidos menos que todos los anteriores. La Liga volverá el domingo  4 de enero a las 21:00, cuando viajaremos a San Sebastián a enfrentarnos contra la Real y cerrar la jornada 19ª. Tras ese partido de Liga, el Atleti viajará rumbo a Oriente para disputar la semifinal de la Supercopa de España el día 8 de enero contra el Mal. El Real Madrid y Atleti ganan en su debut en Copa, pero no convencen. A falta del partido aplazado del 6 de enero entre Granada y Rayo, hoy se juegan los tres últimos partidos de los dieciseisavos de Copa. Ourense - Athletic Club, Burgos - Getafe y Real Murcia - Betis. Además, esta noche el Rayo se juega su presencia en el top 8 de la Conference League en esta última jornada de la fase liga ante el Drita de Kosovo. Borja Jiménez, entrenador del Sporting de Gijón, se pasa por los micrófonos de SER Deportivos a escasos días de su vuelta a casa, Butarque, con el enfrentamiento entre Leganés y Sporting del sábado a las seis y media de la tarde. El doblete de Griezmann y la buena actuación de Musso resultan clave para explicar una sufrida victoria ante el equipo insular

Tal día como hoy, pero el 16 de diciembre de 2019, el portero esloveno Jan Oblak recibía su cuarto Trofeo Zamora consecutivo, tras disputar 37 partidos y haber encajado únicamente 27 goles. Hoy en día, Oblak ha ganado 6 Trofeos Zamora, siendo el portero que más veces ha logrado este galardón, superando a Ramallets y Víctor Valdés. Oblak ha sido el “Zamora” de la Liga en las temporadas 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21 consecutivamente y en la pasada 2024/25. En la competición nacional Liguera, en partido disputado el sábado en el Estadio Metropolitano, último del año 2025, el Atleti logró 3 nuevos puntos que nos acercan al objetivo de la permanencia al ganar por 2-1 al Valencia. Abrió el marcador Koke en el minuto 17 con un pase al fondo de las mallas; empató el Valencia en el minuto 63 con un golazo de Lucas Beltrán y, finalmente, en el minuto 74, Griezmann dio el triunfo a los colchoneros con un golazo fruto de su habilidad y calidad, así como de un magnifico pase de Pubill. Tras este resultado el Atleti sigue 4º en la clasificación con 34 puntos,  a 9 de la cabeza donde sigue el Barça que acabará campeón de invierno. Lo sigue el Mal con 39 puntos, siendo el Villarreal 3º, con 1 punto más que el Atleti, pero con dos partidos menos. El próximo partido en Liga y último de este año 2025, será el domingo 21 de diciembre en el Estadio municipal de Montilivi, donde nos recibirá el Girona, en puestos de descenso (18º), a las 14:00. Además, esta semana el Atleti debutará en la Copa. Habiendo estado exento de disputar la primera ronda por su clasificación para la SuperCopa de España, el sorteo dirigido quiso que nuestro rival sea el Atlético Baleares, al cual nos enfrentaremos el próximo miércoles 17 de diciembre a las 19:00 horas.  Disfruten del programa. El FC Barcelona ha ganado con remontada ante el Eintracht y el Atleti ha remontado también contra el PSV en Eindhoven. Analizamos los dos partidos y escuchamos a los primeros protagonistas. 

Tal día como hoy, pero el 10 de diciembre de 1972, el Atlético de Madrid vencía en Liga por 2-0 al FC Barcelona en el Vicente Calderón, con goles de Gárate y Bezerra. Esa misma temporada, con Max Merkel, conocido como Mr. Látigo, en el banquillo, el Atleti se proclamaría campeón de Liga. Sería el 7º Campeonato nacional de Liga para el club rojiblanco que le daba derecho a jugar la siguiente temporada la Copa de Europa de Campeones de Liga, en la que llegaría a disputar su primera final frente al Bayern de Munich de infausto recuerdo. En la competición nacional Liguera, en partido disputado en San Mamés el pasado sábado a las 21 horas, el Atleti cosechó una nueva derrota fuera de casa al perder por 1-0, frente al Athletic Club de Bilbao. Es la 3ª derrota en la competición, pero 2ª consecutiva, lo cual hace que el Atleti esté 4º en la clasificación a 9 puntos del Barça, líder, a 5 de el Mal que es 2º y a 4 del Villarreal que es 3º con un partido menos que todos los anteriores. El próximo partido en Liga será el día 13 de diciembre en el Estadio Metropolitano, donde recibiremos al Valencia a las 14:00. En la Champions el pasado martes 9 de diciembre el Atleti logró una victoria importantísima ante el PSV por 2-3. Con esos 3 puntos el Atleti se sitúa 7º en la tabla clasificatoria, con muchas opciones de lograr meterse entre los 8 primeros que dan la clasificación para la ronda de Octavos de final. El próximo partido en esta competición será ya el año que viene, concretamente el día 21/1 a las 18:45 horas en Estambul, donde nos enfrentaremos al Galatasaray. Importantísima victoria a domicilio en Champions en un muy buen partido del Atleti en el que a pesar de comenzar perdiendo el equipo mostró su mejor cara y remontó un marcador adverso a base de buen juego y de ganas, justo lo que faltó el fin de semana anterior.
