This episode is titled: The Story of Sack Wine in Early Modern Europe.Imagine walking into the lively taverns and candlelit theaters of early modern Europe, where one drink stood out among both the fashionable and the literary: sack. Think of Sir John Falstaff, the unforgettable character from Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part II, delivering his famous speech. With great enthusiasm, he says that if he had a thousand sons, the first lesson he would teach—the most important of all—would be to avoid weak, watery drinks and instead dedicate themselves to sack.Falstaff's love for sack was not just a joke; it reflected a real trend that spread through England and beyond in the 16th and 17th centuries. Sack was a fortified white wine—rich, strong, and often sweet—similar to what we now call sherry or white port. The origin of the name “sack” is still debated. According to several dictionaries cited by Wikipedia, some believe it comes from the French word “sec,” meaning “dry,” though this explanation has certain linguistic uncertainties.Others suggest it may derive from the Spanish word “sacar,” which means “to withdraw,” referring to the process of drawing wine from a solera. Some historians suggest that the name “sack” comes from the Spanish verb “sacar,” which means “to withdraw,” possibly in reference to drawing wine from barrels for export. The wine itself was traditionally produced in the vineyards of Spain and Portugal. In Spain, the Canary Islands became a major producer after colonization in the 1400s, and regions such as Málaga, Jerez, and Andalusia also produced well-known types. Portugal also played a part, with wines from the north and center of the country, and especially from Madeira. Merchants labeled their shipments by where they came from—” Canary sack,” “Malaga sack,” “Madeira,” or “Jerez”—and these names appeared in trade records from London to Dublin. The trade was massive, especially to the British Isles. According to Jerez-Xeres-Sherry, in 1517, the Duke of Medina Sidonia, Don Alfonso Pérez de Guzmán, granted extended privileges to English merchants operating in Sanlúcar, many of whom were facing difficulties with the Inquisition. Later, in the 1530s, English merchants formed the Spanish Company to facilitate trade, exporting cloth and importing sack wine. So intertwined were the goods that some wines earned the cheeky nickname “bastard”—a nod to the English cloth measure and the back. Even war did not stop people from wanting to sack. During the Anglo-Spanish conflict from 1585 to 1604, smugglers risked crossing the Channel to keep the wine coming when official trade was blocked. Official trade faltered. One of the most memorable moments was Sir Francis Drake's bold raid on Cádiz in 1587, when he set out to “singe the King of Spain's beard.” During the attack, Drake's men took about 2,900 pipes, or butts, of sack, with each holding around 600 liters. This added up to more than a million liters of wine taken as loot. Back in England, drinking this captured wine became a patriotic gesture, a playful way to celebrate victory while enjoying the spoils.Sack became a big part of English culture. On the London stage, it was often mentioned. Ben Jonson praised “a pure rich cup of Canary wine” in his poetry, and later writers, such as John Dryden, who was appointed poet laureate in 1670, according to Samuel Johnson, even accepted barrels of sack as payment. But Shakespeare was its biggest fan. Falstaff talks about the amazing effects of sack: it clears the mind, sharpens wit, warms the blood, and gives courage. “Skill in the weapon is nothing without sack,” he says, and his friends joke about how much he loves it. Audiences in the late 1590s would have recognized sack everywhere, seeing it as a symbol of English energy.Read the full textMore Podcasts

Radiohead, Blur, Oasis, Portishead, Neneh Cherry, Massive Attack, The KLF, Sinéad O'Connor, Suede, The Stone Roses og Manic Street Preachers.

It's the Tuesday before the Australian GP - Round 1 of the 2026 FIA F1 World Championship. Lots to talk about and to contemplate, in other words - particularly with turbulence in the Middle East now colouring the F1 calendar and the FIA re-writing the piston compression ratio rules.

Cambiano i sistemi musicali. Cambiano i nomi. Ossia: zero.
The time finally arrived on the show where I was joined by Ladies European Tour Caddy, TPG Golf Coach, Ex Pro player & The King of Italy, the one and only Giulio Castagnara who those familiar with the show will also remember him as the current partner and caddy of Alessandra Fanali. We struck up a good friendship after the final event of the year when out at Andalucia Costa Del Sol Open de Espana in Malaga. Legend! Giulio is from Pordenone just outside of Udine in North Eastern Italy and would go to Texas Christian University becoming a major player there at TCU contributing to multiple Academic All American first team picks as well as Scholar of the Year. In 2019 Giulio would turn professional and ply his trade on Alps Tour and played some tournaments on Challenge Tour for 4 years before by his own admission losing his love for the game during this time on the Golf Course will Golf evolving from strength to strength. Since stopping in 2022 Giulio would get his PGA Coaching licenses and would loop on the bag for a few events with Alessandra before going full time on the bag for Ale in 2024 with brilliant results on LET since then with numerous close shaves on tour in terms of being in contention and multiple Top 20 finishes for the Fanali/Castagnara combination with 4 Top 10 finishes on tour last year in 2025 including 2nd placed finish at Ford NSW Open in Woollongong. In mid 2025 Giulio would make a big announcement joining the team at TPG Golf to be a qualified Golf Coach with lessons online or getting the chance to go to the States recently to do in person coaching. Giulio is a true gentleman and a very funny guy with Fanali & Castagnara being one of my favourite duos on tour now! Can't thank them both enough for their generosity! All the best this week guys and for 2026! Downloads via Podbean, Apple Podcasts & Spotify while the recorded video will be on YouTube if that is your preferred version!

This week saw Racing Santander revert to type, after beating Depor the week before they lost to a team in the relegation battle to give hope to the rest. Castellon, Depor, Almeria, Cordoba and Burgos closed the gap, so with Malaga still yet to play at the time of recording it was only Las Palmas in the top 8 who didn't take full advantage, although they did edge slightly closer with a draw. Down the bottom it was a good week for Albacete, Eibar and Granada, all three of whom are on mini runs of their own and chat about the bottom half of the table will make up the content of part 2 of this week's show. Send us a textDo Heterogeneous Treatment Effects Exist? For the last 50 years, we've designed cars to be safe...For the 50th-percentile male.Well, that's actually not 100% correct.According to Stanford's report, we introduced "female" crash test dummies in the 1960s, but...They were just scaled-down versions of male dummies and...Represented the 5th percentile of females in terms of body size and mass (aka the smallest 5% of women in the general population). These dummies also did not take into account female-typical injury tolerance, biomechanics, spinal alignment, and more.But...Does it matter for actual safety? In the episode, we cover:- Do heterogeneous treatment effects (different effects in different contexts) exist?- If so, can we actually detect them?- Is it more ethical to look for heterogeneous treatment effects or rather look at global averages?Video version available on the Youtube: https://youtu.be/V801RQTBpp4Recorded on Nov 12, 2025 in Malaga, Spain.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------About RichardProfessor Richard Hahn, PhD, is a professor of statistics at Arizona State University (ASU). We were delighted to be joined by Craig Scarborough for this livestream - particularly as we were in the midst of the Barcelona "closed-door" tests. Lots of new cars to analyse and discuss, therefore - and lots of great questions from the viewers. In the second half of the stream, Peter took more queries from viewers and also paid tribute to Hans Herrmann, the outstanding German driver who passed away on January 9, aged 97.With thanks to Jetcraft, the world's largest buyer and seller of executive jets:https://jetcraft.comTo OEM Exclusive, the passionate suppliers of OEM upgrades for exotic and high-performance vehiclesTo TrackNinja, a lap-timer and data app designed to help users improve their on-track car and driver performance through analysis and an innovative Data Garage. Isaac West gillar lyxiga konserver.

We were blessed this week with two all top six clashes, the demolition of Las Palmas in El Sardinero broke the deadlock at the top whilst simultaneously creating another deadlock between second and third as CD Castellon kept moving on up. Depor tasted victory for the first time since November in the other all top six clash. In part 2 we cover the Funes revolution at Malaga which continues as they broke into the top 6 following victory in Cordoba. They sit level on points with Burgos who beat Huesca in the rain to put Jon Bolo under pressure in El Alcoraz which is the second talking point of part 2 of the show.
At least twenty-one people are killed in Spain after two high-speed trains collide. The accident occurred when a train travelling from Malaga to Madrid derailed near Adamuz in Andalusia, crossing on to another track. Also: the dispute between European countries and the United States - over Donald Trump's determination to annex Greenland - continues to escalate; Senegal wins the Africa Cup of Nations in men's football for the second time after an enthralling - and sometimes chaotic - final; China meets its economic growth target - but there are problems ahead; and a bumper fruit crop in New Zealand means they're preparing for a stellar breeding season for the world's fattest parrot - the Kakapo. The Global News Podcast brings you the breaking news you need to hear, as it happens. Welcome to the 2026 F1 season - and thanks for all the great questions and comments. This podcast begins with a quick look at the McRae family - as in Jimmy, the five-times British Rally Champion and Colin, the much-missed Rally1 hero - after which we open the F1 vault. Topics range from Sir Frank Williams' road accident to Christian Horner's future and what Alan Jones felt after finishing P2 to Carlos Reutemann in Brazil, 1981. It's two hours, in other words, of non-stop F1 chat - past, present and future.

And so it ended. Max, Oscar and Lando finished one-two-three on the Abu Dhabi road - but it was Lando who was thus ahead in the final standings of the FIA Drivers' World Championship by the margin of two points. Lando Norris = World Champion. Max was magnificent from the pole; Oscar ran hard Pirellis from the start (rather than the Mediums selected by all the other major runners) and, in so doing, applied some pressure on Max for most of the distance; towards the end, though, on old-ish Hards, Max was super-quick and super-consistent as he consolidated his margin over Oscar. Lando brought his McLaren MCL39-Mercedes home in a crafted third place, responding to potential undercuts from George Russell and Charles Leclerc and scything through the mid-field traffic whenever he was on fresh tyres; and Charles Leclerc finished a dazzling P4 for Ferrari, upstaging the factory Mercedes of George Russell and ultimately setting fastest lap late in the race on used Mediums. Into P6, behind George, came a classy Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin-Mercedes, Esteban Ocon (Haas-Ferrari) and Sir Lewis Hamilton, who had started P16 in his Ferrari. A somewhat shell-shocked Cameron chats to Peter on the Tuesday after the Abu Dhabi GP. Lando is the new World Champion; Max is the season's winningest driver. So who won? And why? And what were the pivotal moments? And is the current F1 points-scoring system actually working? Against all odds - against all logic - Max Verstappen and Red Bull-Honda decisively and clinically won the Qatar GP on Sunday, with McLaren-Mercedes finishing only P2-P4, sandwiching the Williams-Mercedes of Carlos Sainz. In what will be remembered as the most inexplicable strategy call of the 2025 season, both McLaren drivers were told to stay out when a Safety Car was deployed on lap seven. Thus went their chance of a "free" tyre change in a race in which the use of each set of Pirellis was uniquely limited to 25 laps. With the rest of the field switching tyres under the SC conditions, McLaren now faced a two-stop race against what had now effectively become a one-stop race for their opposition. And it was Max Verstappen who capitalised on that error - instantly and without blinking. He was quick on his second set of mediums - and he was McLaren-fast on his set of hard tyres, often surpassing Piastri's times in the first two sectors. His was a titanic win at a crucial point of the championship, for Lando Norris now goes to Abu Dhabi, the season's finale, with only a 12-point lead over Verstappen and a 16-point margin over his team-mate.
