This week, we are delighted to welcome Matt Higgins to the show. Concisely explaining Matt's career is a challenge. In the world of sport, he has been a managing executive at the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins in the NFL, founder of sports events and media company Relevent Sports, an early investor in the Drone Racing League.  In the business world, the story is equally impressive. The youngest press secretary in New York City history, founder of investment first RSE Ventures, one of the sharks on US TV's ‘Shark Tank', Wall Street Journal Bestselling author for his recent book ‘Burn the Boats'.  You know on this show that we like to explore what fuels the sports industry through the perspectives of those that live it behind the scenes every day. Matt brings all of that and some, often accompanied by timely anecdotes, alongside the perspective of someone who has lived a life outside of sport.  In today's show we discuss: Career in the NFL: Matt held the position of Executive Vice President at the New York Jets and Vice Chairman of the Miami Dolphins. What did these jobs involve? Key revenue streams in NFL franchises - from tickets, to suites, to sponsorships, how do the behind the scenes team maximise the commercial performance of major sports organisations? The importance of adopting new technology and innovative strategy as a sport and an independent franchise. Building and funding the MetLife stadium in New York; from financing to naming rights deals and everything in between.  Big money and sport Investment in sport from private equity, nation states, high net worth individuals has been on the rise in recent years. Why? Is private equity good for sport? The importance of retaining control and governance as investment is received. More money is good; less control is not. The importance of having people who have been operators before running the business of a sports entity. You can't learn it from a spreadsheet. Why every franchise or team should have their own fund/financing vehicle. Owning a sports asset provides next level access to deals and the opportunity to become early adopters. A career alongside sports management Setting up investment fund RSE Ventures and investing in/founding organisations like Relevent Sports and Drone Racing League  Owning a stake in a pickleball team alongside LeBron James and the opportunity presented by new sports to disrupt the existing ecosystem  Matt's attempt to purchase Formula One was eventually unsuccessful when Liberty Media purchased the company. What did he see in the opportunity? Bringing the biggest teams in Europe to the US through the creation of the International Champions Cup. Matt's book 'Burn the Boats' is an amazing read. We highly recommend checking it out here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Burn-Boats-Overboard-Unleash-Potential/dp/006308886X We are delighted to partner with Tyndall Investment Management for this show. On this series of “Intersections: a podcast by The Connect”, we wanted to go a bit deeper on the analysis of football or soccer as a business from the United States perspective, and setup a series of conversations with executives and personalities that we admire, that through their vast experience as player, investor, team owner, agent, business developer, and promoter, we would extract a wealth of knowledge about the next decade of football business, and how North America is positioned as the next frontier for growth.   For Episode 5, the final of this current series, we have someone that is regarded by the industry as a whole as one of the top soccer business executives in the world, Charlie Stillitano, Executive Chairman at Relevent Sports. Of deep Italian and soccer heritage, Charlie is a lawyer and former All-American soccer player at Princeton, and has played a vital role in the development of soccer in the United States in the last 30 years, from his appointment as venue director for Giants Stadium at the 1994 World Cup, going through the formation of Major League Soccer in 1996, when he became became the general manager of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. His deep connections into the global soccer world led him to create in 2003 the promoter ChampionsWorld, before moving on to Creative Arts Agency (organizers of the World Football Challenge) in 2007. The latter acquired by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross' agency, Relevent Sports in 2012, from which Charlie leads a multinational team of professionals that developed and run the International Champions Cup, and the joint-venture with Spanish LaLiga to develop LaLiga's brand and business in North America.   Watch more: https://linktr.ee/TheConnect   www.TheConnect.co --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theconnectco/message

Since joining the Texans, Rootes has overseen the team's efforts to secure stadium-naming rights and sponsorship, coordinated radio and TV broadcasting relationships, engineered the club's successful ticket and suite sales campaigns, led the creation and launch of the team's identity, and developed the team's highly acclaimed customer service strategy. Under Rootes' leadership, the Texans have earned many distinctions, including numerous "Crystal Awards" and most recently two American Business Awards for marketing excellence. J.D. Power & Associates recognized the team for providing the best fan experience in the NFL and featured the Texans as a service success story in their book entitled "Satisfaction." The Texans were also recognized with Sports Business Journal's PRISM Award, which is given annually to the top major professional sports team based on business excellence criteria. In 2019, the Texans extended their sellout streak to 185 consecutive home games – a Houston NFL record and a testament to the quality of service and entertainment provided by the organization on gameday. As a result, the Texans have consistently been recognized as one of the most valuable professional sports franchises both in the NFL and globally, as measured by a variety of business publications. Rootes also serves as President of Lone Star Sports & Entertainment (LSSE), a sports management agency associated with the Texans. LSSE has been a catalyst for some of Houston's most significant sporting events. Under Rootes' leadership, LSSE created and now manages the Texas Bowl, Houston's annual college football bowl game, as well as the Texas Kickoff, an annual college football game. In addition to college football games, Rootes has overseen the production of many soccer games put on by LSSE such as COPA America in 2016, the Manchester Derby in 2017, and an International Champions Cup match between global soccer powers Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in 2019. Sports Business Journal twice selected Rootes as a member of its distinguished "Forty Under 40" list of leading sports executives, and in 2014 he was named a finalist for the Global Sports Executive of the Year by the Stadium Business Awards. Rootes was recognized in 2017 as the first-ever Houston Business Journal's Business Person of the Year after serving as chairman of the Greater Houston Partnership. In 2019, he was selected as one of Houston Business Journal's Most Admired CEOs. Earlier this year, Rootes was recognized as the 2020 Steinberg/DeNicola NFL Humanitarian of the Year. Rootes served on the Super Bowl Host Committees in 2004 and 2017 and was also appointed deputy chairman of two public boards for Super Bowl LI in 2017. He led the efforts to secure the Texans appearance in the first-ever Monday Night Football game to be played in Mexico which helped to elevate Houston's visibility on an international scale. Rootes maintains an active role in the community by serving on the Board of Directors of the Greater Houston Partnership and the United Way of Greater Houston. He also oversees the activities of the Houston Texans Foundation whose mission is to be "Champions for Youth. The Houston Texans Foundation has donated more than $36 million since its inception in 2002 through annual fundraising events, disaster response programs, the team's United Way campaign and partnerships with nonprofit organizations on gameday.
