Pierre was stewing over his wife's perceived infidelity with Dolokhov, who was sitting right across from him at the celebration for Bagration. As too often of late, Pierre was a glutton - eating and drinking in excess. He sensed what marrying into the Kuragin family would devolve into -- but could not resist that Siren's call of Hélène.   Pierre's suspicions were roused by rumor as well as an anonymous letter informing him that his wife's connection with Dolokhov was a secret to no one but himself.  Pierre reflects while others give toasts. He recalled how Dolokhov arrived from Austerlitz, injured and need of a place to recover; and how he housed him and lent him money.   It now made sense as to why Dolokhov would so often praise Hélène's beauty. He senses Dolohkov gets a kick out of cuckolding him. He sees Dolokhov wearing a familiar & sadistic look,  such as when he tied a policeman to the bear in Petersburg or when he shot some mail-carrier's horse.  Pierre considered, “to kill a man means nothing to him.” Yet Pierre felt a prideful need to make a stand.  His mind was scrambling and did not even recognize Nicholas, who chides the Count when Pierre failed to toast Alexandr. Dolokhov suggests for Nichols to be nicer and renew their acquaintance. Denisov then suggests that Rostov should flatter the man with the biggest estate and most striking wife. Pierre sensed he was being talked about.   Dolokhov directs himself to Pierre and makes a toast inadvertently funny or intentionally cutting:  “Here's to the health of lovely women, Peterkin—and their lovers!” Is he honoring Pierre or rubbing the whole matter in his face?   Just then a footman was distributing leaflets of a vocal composition for guests to sing along with.  One was laid one before Pierre.  Dolokhov decided to take what was Pierre's and perhaps Tolstoy is being symbolic.   Dolokhov grabs the paper and began to peruse it, which was the straw that broke the camel's back. We are not told if Dolokhov is being insolent or his rascal self nor whether there was any affair. We just know Pierre's perceptions. Pierre looked at Dolokhov and with a ferocity he never demonstrated, yelled “How dare you take it, You shan't have it!” The outburst alarmed those near, including Prince Nesvítski. Dolokhov returns a look which seemed to say  “Ah! This is what I love!”  Pierre continues, “You...! You Villain! I challenge you!”  He is demanding satisfaction.  In Pierre's mind the question of his wife's guilt was resolved.  Within that gigantic heart, he hated his wife and was separated from her.    Formal arrangements were made for the duel to take place the next day in the Sokolnik Forest.   Rostov agrees to be Dolokhov's second and Pierre choses Nesvitski. Pierre quickly goes home but  Dolokhov stays at the English club, admiring the entertainment.  When Rostov asked Dolokhov how he felt, the latter responded:   “I'll tell you the whole secret of dueling. If you make a will and write affectionate letters to your parents and think you may be killed, you are a fool and are lost. But if you go with the firm intention of killing your man as quickly and surely as possible, then all will be right…. À demain, mon cher.” We are brought to the next morning at the forest. Dolokhov, Denisov and Rostov arrive first. When Pierre appears, he carried the air of a man who already lost. He was absorbed by his wife's guilt and thought his adversary had no reason to preserve the honor of a man who meant nothing to him. Pierre ponders "Either I shall kill him or he will me." There were moments he felt like running away and burying himself.   He realized there was no getting out of this and considered “Will it be long before this begins? Is all ready?” The pistols were loaded and sabres stuck in the snow to mark the barriers by which the duelists could not pass to shoot. Nesvitski tries to talk Pierre down, saying there is no sufficient grounds for mortal conflict and that Pierre was impetuous. Pierre agrees the whole thing is horribly stupid but feels compelled to proceed.  Pierre is almost wishing to be put out of his misery.  This includes the gloom over his marriage, the wealth he cannot manage and his directionless life.   He took the pistol and inquired about its working, as he had never even held a pistol. This as he was to face a man who been in various duels and acquitted himself well at Austerlitz. The spot chosen was some 80 paces from the main road, in a clearing in the pine forest that was still covered with snow.  The duelists would start 40 paces apart from separate edges and walk to each other and fire at will. At this time of day, it was misty and neither belligerent could see the other.  This delayed the ability to commence for a few minutes.

The magnificent banquet honoring General Bagration was held in Moscow on March 3, 1806 at the English Club, a great marble hall with a series of smaller saloons. This celebration is remembered for its fervor amidst defeat. A source Tolstoy used for this was the first-hand account by the English writer & diplomat, Robert Ker Porter, who ironically notes that by 1806, there were not three English members of this social club.  Tolstoy has all the rooms humming with conversation, like bees swarming in Spring. Many guests were elderly and respected personages who could be found at their usual places. A smaller set were younger, some returning from Austerlitz. This is symbolized by Denísov, Rostov and Dolokhov— the latter who is said to be having an affair with Pierre's wife. The faces of youth expressed “We honor and respect you, our elders, but remember, the future belongs to us.” Pierre was surrounded by subservience to his wealth. He now belonged to a class he quickly grew contemptuous of. He was no longer that vibrant clumsy character when he had little to his name. He was fashionably dressed but appeared sullen. At his wife's insistence, he let his hair grow and abandoned his spectacles. Many of the historic figures at the event rationalized the loss at Austerlitz.  The night was filled with a passion for revival with much of the zeal directed toward Bagration. It was the most animated Porter ever recalled seeing aristocrats of Europe get.  Count Rostov is presented as having the honor of hosting this event and he enthusiastically greets all who attend. His son was accompanied by Dolokhov, whose acquaintance Nicholas had come to value. When Bagration arrived, bells rang, servants rushed around and the better part of the 300 guests crowded to witness the arrival. Bagration was described as short and with a dark complexion, indicative of the warm climates he had served in. His face was perfectly Georgian and expressed an affability and sweetness. He was dressed in a green uniform covered with various awards.Bagration had the honor of entering the dining area first and walked reticently. He would look more comfortable in a field under fire. He was soon escorted by Count Rostov, who appealed for the guests to make way. Ilya carried a large silver tray, on top of which lied written verses that were read aloud and continued through the dinner announcement. The sentiment expressed was: You Bring Glory to Alexandr's Reign; You are a Dreaded Foe, which Napoleon has Learned So Well; You carry the Wisdom and Tactics of Caesar; You are a Rhipheus (hero of Troy); But are in essence, a Good and Kind-Hearted Man.The guests grew hungry and found their seats, which corresponded to their rank and importance. The Count with a few choice peers sat facing Bagration. Ilyá presented his son to Bagration and was filled with joy when the two chatted.  Nicholas, Denísov and Dolokhov sat almost at the middle of the table. Facing them were Pierre and Prince Nesvitski,Every selection at dinner was splendid. Between the courses was a stream of toasts. At one point, the Host shouted, “To the health of our Sovereign, the Emperor!” The band immediately struck up a traditional patriotic song, which led all to rise and shout “Hurrah!” Young Rostov's ecstatic voice could be heard above the rest during his own toast to Alexandr. He emptied his glass at one gulp he thrashed it on the floor. Many followed the example and it was the job of the footmen to clean up the mess.  Various officers were then toasted and the glasses continued to shatter. As I have been stressing, Bagration was embraced as National Hero and redeemer. However, Bagration did have his own embarrassments, which Tolstoy knew of and some scholars believe the author addresses indirectly.  Notably, Bagration was shamed by his wife, the alluring Ekaterina, who carried the nickname, le Bel Ange Nu, the Beautiful Naked Angel, for her revealing and often translucent attire. They separated in 1805 and she was renowned for her liaisons. This included a long-term relationship with Clemence Von Metternich, the Austrian diplomat, by whom she bore her only child, Marie. Metternich informally adopted the child, allowing Marie to live with his family.  Ekaterina remained married and Marie was raised with Bagration's name – as mandated by Czar Alexandr, who was also said to have relations with Ekaterina years later. These the widely known affairs of Ekaterina appear to be thrust upon the fictional Hélène, Pierre's wife. Rumors are swirling that Hélène is making a fool of Pierre, who is in many senses, is Tolstoy's hero of the novel.  In this chapter, we have Pierre present, stewing in anger and seated across from his new rival, while the historic hero, who had a similar problem, is honored.

Greetings, comrades, and welcome to The Eastern Border. Today, we are taking a long, hard look into the rotting, schizophrenic core of the Russian imperial delusion. The Kremlin generals are promising Vladimir Putin the entire Donbas by autumn, but the guys in the trenches are looking up at a sky entirely owned by Ukrainian drone swarms. In this episode, we audit the absolute collapse of the Russian state's connection to physical reality. We dive into the "Drone Wall" paralyzing Russian logistics, the dystopian slaughter of the Kuzbass dairy cows by the "Sovereign Feudalism" elite, and the frantic mothers of the 138th Brigade revealing that the Rostov military morgues are physically overflowing. But the real fatal blow? The 12-trillion ruble black hole in the Russian budget. As real inflation crosses 20% and the public withdraws 600 billion rubles in a massive bank run, the Kremlin has completely run out of cash. Their response? A terminal hallucination where the FSB blames their own drug epidemic on Kyiv, and the censorship board literally bans 10th-grade physics textbooks because the "Gay-Lussac" gas law sounds too much like Western propaganda. The empire is overdosing on vranyo, and the withdrawal symptoms are terminal.Become our patron:https://www.patreon.com/theeasternborderMerch store + another option for memberships:https://theeasternborder-shop.fourthwall.com/Follow what's going on here in the very border of Eastern Europe:https://bsky.app/profile/theeasternborder.lvDonate to the Ukrainian army so that they can get the trucks that they neehttps://car4ukraine.com/YouTube Link:https://youtu.be/ttwDtp4skucSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/theeasternborder. He was German by birth but, drawn to the Orthodox faith, he moved to Rostov and not only became Orthodox, but took on the podvig of folly for Christ. He lived in complete destitution, spending the days pretending madness and the nights in prayer. Many wonders were performed by this Saint even in his lifetime. When he died in his meager hut in 1484, the people of Rostov smelled a fragrant odor throughout the city. A merchant whom he had miraculously saved from drowning built a church in the place where his hut had stood.

On his return as a lieutenant in a fancy military jacket laced with silver as well as possessing a St. George's Cross for bravery, Nicholas is treated magnificently. Nicholas gets used to it and develops an ego that leaves him open to being taken advantage of. The finances of his aristocratic family are brought out, noting how his affable father, Ilya, was bestowing a trove on his Prodigal son, as well as other celebratory events after remortgaging his estates. Illya purchased his son a fine horse that could enter races and also the most fashionable outfits. With his new look and demeanor, Nicholas would be seen at the elite social events. He also visited a woman on the boulevard…a fairly clear reference to a prostitute. He relished being home as a young man aware of the world.  He left behind childish things, such as once feeling disconcerted about sneaking around his mansion kissing Sonya. He also visited the historical English Club – a social institution started by English merchants around 1770 that gathered at various stately houses. Men used the Club to socialize, drink, gamble and make connections. Tolstoy, Pushkin and Nikolai Gogol were members. Gogol is a writer with Ukrainian roots, from a Cossack family, which both Ukraine & Russia claim as theirs. Like much of Moscow, Rostov's passion for the Czar cooled but he still expressed that there was something in his feelings for Alexandr that could not be understood by others. Rostov drifted even away further from Sonya, as Tolstoy expertly catches the nature of a young man who must have his freedom. He knew there were more women to know and Love would come later. It was now early March, and Ilya is arranging a dinner in honor of General Bagration at the aforementioned English Club. Ilya is presented as a long-time member.    This celebration for actually happened and it is important to recognize why. The reason was that Bagration was viewed as the saving grace of the recent war. Tolsoty reveals how the news of Austerlitz traveled. High Society had generally been accustomed to victories, especially from era of Catherine the Great & General Suvorov, where the triumphs were common over the Ottomans and Poles. On receiving news of the absolute defeat at Austerlitz – much of Moscow did not believe it or chose not to.  However, the truth could not be contained. When it spread, it had to be dealt with. Blame was cast on many, including Kutuzov. Many felt it was the general's age, health, and lack of ingenuity that led to defeat. More quietly blame was cast the Czar, by way of his youth, inexperience and trust in worthless advisors. Still, a good portion considered Alexandr as the “angel incarnate.” Most vocally, the Austrians were blamed. The public felt compelled to throw their support behind the army.  Some were singled out for having performed miracles of valor. The chief hero of was General Bagration, hailed for his effort at Schön Grabern and command of the rear-guard. It also helped that Moscow's new hero was a stranger to the City. Tolstoy has Shinshin (a quick wit and relative of the Rostovs) parody the master of satire, Voltaire by voicing, “Had there been no Bagration, it would have been necessary to invent him.” The original quote was “Had there been no God, it would have been necessary to invent him.” The Frenchman reached something profound in few words.   Tales of valor of numerous men were embellished and spread and characters like Rostov, Boris and Berg symbolized that wave. One may have saved a standard, another had reportedly killed five Frenchmen, while another was said to fight valiantly with an injury. There is a reference that nobody spoke of Andrei. Reports were that he was killed, leaving a pregnant wife with his eccentric father. Tolstoy references Andrei to symbolize the many, with such promise, who were wasted. This chapter plays up the elaborateness of the preparation for the event at the English Club, going through the choice of cook, food and entertainment. Nicholas jokes with his father that Bagration prepared less for battle at Schön Grabern. Ilya tells his son to go to Pierre's, invite him and obtain the best fruit – strawberries and pineapples, as they are not available anywhere else.  Anna Drubetskaya shows up and introduces the sordid affair that Pierre is affected by. There is a rumor that Dolokhov, who survived Austerlitz, is having an affair with Helene, Pierre's wife.  Helene, has always been presented as the type of woman who is a snare -- something of Delilah to the Biblical Sampson. She reveals that Pierre gave Dolokhov a place to stay upon his return and was betrayed. This has filled Pierre with a rage of biblical proportions.

We are brought to early 1806, where Tolstoy uses Nicholas and Denisov to transition the story to Peace.  Rostov has went from witnessing Czar Alexander crying under a tree near Austerlitz to returning to his Moscow estate. This chapter addresses his warm embrace.Nicholas was traveling with Denisov, who is partially based on the literary Hussar, Dennis Davydov. Rostov persuaded Denisov to accompany him and the wild hussar enjoyed a great deal of wine on the journey.  During the home stretch, it meant a great deal for Rostov to notice recognizable streets, stores and most especially his mansion. Rostov runs into the Great Hall but his family already retired. When servants notice Nicholas, they become elated. Word spread like joyful lightening and from all angles Rostov was attacked with hugs, kisses and shouts of ecstasy. The initial welcome included his father, Natasha, Vera, Sonya and little Petya, who clutched his brother's leg.  Finally, the entire hold household was flocking the room, including maids, serfs and footman.Tolstoy's attention focuses on Sonya, now 16 and noted to be radiant. She looked eagerly at Nicholas and waited for an unspoken signal. At last, Rostov's mother approached with uncharacteristic quick steps. He ran to her and when they met, she fell on his chest, sobbing. Denisov was overcome with emotion and wiped away tears. The family knew Denisov from letters and Natasha soon lunged at the Captain and delivered a hug and a kiss. It was a glorious moment that ended when the soldiers went off to bed.  The travelers slept until ten the next morning. It was as if they were sleeping off the ill affects of war.  Petya woke them up, breaching decorum by entering the room and exposing Denisov in his sleeping attire. Petya was soon playing with his brother's saber and Natasha put on his spurred boots. The men were waited on hand and foot, including servants fetching hot water for shaving and providing a clean supply of clothes. Rostov felt the love and his childlike and soulful smile returned.A little later Natasha delivers a selfless message from Sonya, who Tolstoy uses to illustrate a most pure love. He is bestowed the type of affection a young man is fortunate to have but apt be careless with. Nicholas is ready to take on life and whatever else is bound to come his way.Natasha explains, in a childlike way, how devoted Sonya remains. Sonya has made it clear that she will always love Nicholas, but frees him of any obligations from previous vows. Tolstoy imbues her with wisdom beyond her years.  Nicholas realizes that there are so many other pleasures before him and it is right to remain free. When Nicholas turns the tables and inquires of Natasha's interest in Boris, Natasha brushes off any previous commitment. She does not think about Boris or anyone else in that way. She is now enamored with a celebrity dancer and wants to pursue dancing as her passion.  She then demonstrates some amateurish steps and changes the topic to inquire of Denisov. When Rostov again meets Sonya in the drawing room in the presence of the rest of the family, Rostov did not know how to behave. He felt a different type of nervousness than on the battlefield but it was still very real. He kissed her hand and addressed her with an uncharacteristic formalness. Her eyes begged forgiveness for having dared, through Natasha, to remind Nicholas of his promise. His eyes thanked Sonya for offering him his freedom and relayed that, in one way but likely not the another, he would never cease to love her.It was his eldest sister Vera, the un-beloved member of the family, who announces …. “How strange it is that Sonya and Nicholas now use formal terms to address one another… and meet like strangers.” Vera's remark was correct, as her remarks always were, but, like most of her observations, it made everyone feel uncomfortable.

Nicholas continues on his mission looking for Kutuzov or the Emperor. He notices broken carriages along the roads and hordes of troops in worsening levels of disorganization. Many are wounded. He reaches an area safe from cannon fire coming from the Pratzen Heights and slows to realize that there is no point to what he is doing. He has nothing of import to convey to the Tsar or to Kutuzov, should they remain alive. He learns the direction surviving commanders headed and hears conflicting reports about Alexandr being wounded or killed. One soldier, however, expressed confidence the Tsar was driven away at full speed in a carriage pulled by his customary driver, Illya Ivanych, Rostov rides on -- not knowing how to direct himself. He took in the scenery and local architecture, including a church, symbolic of the sacred blotted out by War. He felt that if the Emperor was slain, he should have no desire to save himself.  The point is that Alexandr, who does not know the thousands of young men he sent to their ignominious end, remains Rostov's end-and-be-all. This is a contrast to Andrei, who finally realizes there is something much greater than ambitious rulers. Rostov soon passes the battlefield where the largest number perished. Here, “men lied like heaps of manure on well-kept plowland.” There were 10 to 15 dead to each couple of acres. Those wounded stumbled together in twos and threes and Rostov absorbed their screams and groans.  Rostov became noticeable on his horse and some French on higher ground trained a few shots at him.  He was snapped out of his moroseness through thinking of his mother's love. Once again Nicholas adopts the instincts of a rabbit who senses danger and escapes.   He made it to a small village many utilized as a Haven. Upon hearing more rumors about the Emperor, he continued on for a couple of miles, coming to a ditch where he saw two men who seemed out of place on their grand horses. Another stood by a tree and Rostov noticed it was his Monarch.  Such a scenario may be thought fictional or symbolic – namely, Alexandr becoming virtually alone in the disorder of the retreat. However, there is enough truth in this description to commend Tolstoy for weaving fiction and history in the way that Shakespeare did with his Histories, where the Bard's writing often stands for a greater truth. What happened historically was that the struggle for The Pratzen Heights decided the Battle and Kutuzov remained at the center of the conflict for as long as prudent. Both Kutozov and even Weyrother were shouting orders, trying to rally men, dispatching messengers -- all actions of reputable commanders. Amidst the chaos, there are reports that Alexander was separated from his Guard and wound up with some of the survivors of Gen. Miloradovich's brigade. At one point, Alexandr was found “on damp ground under a tree, with his face covered with a handkerchief, bitterly crying.”  This was the account of Gen. Carl Freidrich Graf von Toll.        The sentiment portrayed by Tolstoy is that Alexandr started the day envisioning he would be at the head of His army, like a Greek Warrior-King, at least at the moment of Triumph. Yet the accounts are that he was reduced to the image of something like……Job among the ash heap. So Tolstoy depicts Rostov as having the opportunity to comfort his Beloved. Yet Tolstoy does NOT have Nicholas take that step.  Instead, Rostov backs down with the fear of a youth who cannot approach his true love. Though Nicholas had played over a million speeches in his head on what he would say to Alexandr should they meet, he was now immobilized by fear. Instead he convinces himself of the imprudence of an approach at such an unpleasant moment. He felt any such interaction should be reserved for when Rostov was dying on the field and there would be a poetic moment of thanks. Tolstoy then has Von Toll come into the scene and upon seeing the Emperor, comfort him while the two spend a few moments under an apple tree.

Tolstoy brings you back from Andrei's spiritual revelation to focus on Nicholas Rostov, who is imbued with the Confidence of Youth.   General Bagratión had assented to Rostov's request to be brought off the reserve line and selected him for a fool's errand – as Bagratión is presented as understanding the futility of the attack. This is in contrast to Prince Dolgorúkov, part of Alexandr's inner circle, who felt victory was ordained. Dolgorúkov holds much of the blame for this debacle as reports indicate that he told Alexandr it would be cowardice to avoid confrontation.Rostov is to be sent to either Kutuzov or the Emperor, who are thought to be near the Pratzen Heights, under the rubric of seeking guidance on how to advance. However, Bragratión knows that the distance the messenger would cover would likely have him killed or never be able to deliver the message. Rostov perceived no such danger and was overjoyed to be selected. He serves the literary vehicle that brings you through a historic military folly. Nicholas moved along Bagratión's troops and then came upon General Feodor Uvárov's revered cavalry, where he noticed fine horseman preparing for battle. Uvárov commanded a reserve force of the Imperial Guard. As Rostov moved passed them, the sound of cannon and musketry was growing louder.   Around Pratzen, volleys of musketry and cannon from the slopes merged into a general roar. Rostov took it in, including the sight of masses of infantry moving in all directions and getting into action.  Soon came first sign of trouble, which didn't really register -- there were Uhlans, a light calvary unit, in disordered ranks retreating from an attack.  At that point Tolstoy has Rostov sense the rolling thunder of Uvárov's famous charge. He perceived the thud of hooves and jingle of weaponry. As Rostov turned toward the horsemen in the open expanse of field he shared, he realized there was a stampede headed straight toward him. He barely gets out of their way amidst the order to charge. The look of these men was of complete earnestness. Yet the reality was most were headed to their demise. Rostov had to turn his horse and briefly join them, to avoid getting crushed. One of the last to pass scowled at what he considered an idiot impeding the way. As the calvary passed, he could here the common chant of “Ura!” He got his bearings and soon noticed much of the calvary likely reached their destination as their ranks were mixed with some foreign cavalry. He could see nothing more, as smoke from cannon fire enveloped everything and he continued on.   Tolstly points out, in a nod to military history that this brilliant charge amazed the French themselves – and for a few moments broke the French infantry and captured a regimental eagle. Rostov was afforded the luxury of envying doomed men he thought glorious. He considered that while these men had positions of honor, he may get to see the Emperor again. Through a mix of men running about and cannon fire, he heard a voice he recognized as Boris. Boris shared the elated smile of a vane young man who survives fire for the first time and relayed his own success story, that his Imperial Guard unit unexpectedly got into action after they took fire and drove the French back. Rostov soon reveals how he is delivering a letter to “His Majesty.” He clarifies he means Alexandr, not the nearby Grand Duke, who commands the Guard. Their common friend Berg gets in this mix and the three are united. Berg cannot stop bragging about a minor wound to his hand, referencing his own lineage from a warrior class of German knightsWhen Rostov extricated himself from this reunion reality soon hit. It was all coming together – the retreating Uhlans, Boris's unit involved in action, and the French getting behind parts of his army around Pratzen. He later learned that large sections of Russian and Austrian soldiers had been firing at one another. When he again observed Russian and Austrian forces running in confused crowds, he was seized by a panic and started to sense the battle was lost. He realized how many were dying and that perhaps he would meet the same end.Rostov heard, in different languages, blame being cast.  He considered, “My God! What does it all mean?” He could not believe these soldiers could act so dishonorably when the Emperor might see them. Finally, he noticed French cannons and troops on the Pratzen Heights themselves, in the spot where he had been ordered to look for Kutuzov.

"These five courageous men shone like five resplendent stars in the dark days of the anti-Christian Emperors Diocletian and Maximian. St Eustratius was a Roman general in the city of Satalios, Eugene was one of his comrades in arms and Orestes likewise a respected soldier. Auxentius was a priest and Mardarius a simple citizen who came, like Eustratius, from the town of Aravraca. The imperial governors, Lysias and Agricola, tortured Auxentius first as he was a priest. Beholding the innocent suffering of the Christians, Eustratius presented himself before Lycias and declared that he also was a Christian. While Eustratius was being tortured, Eugene stood up before the judge and cried out: 'I am a Christian too, Lycias!' When they were driving Eustratius and the other martyrs through the town, Mardarius saw them from the roof of his house, and he took leave of his wife and two frail daughters and hastened after them, shouting into the faces of their tormentors: 'I am a Christian too, like the Lord Eustratius!' Orestes was a young and handsome soldier, who stood head and shoulders above all the other soldiers. One day, when he was at target practice in Lycias's presence, the Cross he was wearing fell from his breast, and Lycias realised that he was a Christian. Orestes openly confessed his faith, and was martyred with the others. Auxentius was beheaded, Eugene and Mardarius died under torture, Orestes was exposed on a red-hot iron grid and Eustratius died in a flaming furnace. St Blaise (see Feb. 11th) gave Communion to St Eustratius in prison before his death. Their relics were later taken to Constantinople, and are preserved in the church dedicated to them — The Holy Five Companions. They were seen alive in that church, and St Orestes appeared to St Dimitri of Rostov (see Oct. 28th). A beautiful prayer by St Eustratius is extant, which is read at the Midnight Service on Saturdays: 'I glorify Thy majesty, 0 Lord for Thou hast regarded my lowliness and hast not shut me up in the hands of my enemies, but hast saved my soul from want...'. Born near Kiev, he was raised in piety and, at the early age of eleven, entered the Ecclesiastical Academy of Kiev. At the age of seventeen he was professed as a monk. A few years later he was ordained to the priesthood. Despite his constant desire to retire into a life of asceticism and solitude, his many gifts were needed by the Church and, much against his will, he spent most of his life engaged in writing and other labors. The Abbot of the Lavra of the Kiev Caves, knowing his scholarly abilities, called him to compile a Russian-language Lives of the Saints, a work to which he devoted himself tirelessly for twenty-five years.   This compilation was not a dry exercise for him; he approached each Saint's life with prayer, and was often granted visions. The holy Martyr Barbara appeared to him in his sleep in 1685; when he asked her to intercede for him to the Lord, she chided him for praying "in the Latin Way," that is, for using short prayers. Seeing his distress at being so rebuked, she smiled and said "Do not be afraid!"   St Demetrius was elevated to the episcopal throne (of Metropolitan of Tobolsk and Siberia) in 1701, but asked to be transferred due to ill health, and because the Siberian see would not allow him to continue his research. So he was appointed to the Diocese of Rostov in 1702; he received a divine revelation that he would end his years there. He completed his monumental Lives of the Saints in 1705; thereafter he devoted his energies to the care of his flock, the education of priests, and many spiritual writings, including several addressed to the schismatic "Old Believers," pleading with them to rejoin the canonical Church.   Despite his poor health, he maintained a life of strict prayer and fasting, and encouraged his faithful, in his sermons and writings, to do the same. He predicted his own death three days beforehand. The Synaxarion concludes: "the holy Bishop fell at the feet of his servants and chanters, and asked their forgiveness. Then, with an ardent prayer on his lips, he shut himself in his cell. The next morning, 28 October 1709, they discovered him dead upon his knees. The relics of Saint Demetrius were found incorrupt in 1752 and they wrought many healings. He was formally glorified by the Church in 1757."

'Our righteous Father Sergius was born in Rostov, north of Moscow, about the year 1314. Named Bartholomew in baptism, he was brought up in Radonezh, and at the death of his parents he withdrew to the wilderness to become a monk. It is notable that without having been trained in a monastery, he was of such a spiritual stature as to be able to take up the perilous eremitical life from the beginning, without falling into delusion or despondency. When he had endured with courage the deprivations of the solitary life, other monks began to come to him, for whom he was made abbot against his will. On the counsel of Philotheus, Patriarch of Constantinople, he organized his monks according to the cenobitic life, appointing duties to each. While Anthony and Theodosius of Kiev, and the other righteous Fathers before Sergius, had established their monasteries near to cities, Sergius was the leader and light of those who went far into the wilderness, and after his example the untrodden forests of northern Russia were settled by monks. When Grand Duke Demetrius Donskoy was about to go to battle against the invading Tartars, he first sought the blessing of Saint Sergius, through whose prayers he was triumphant. Saint Sergius was adorned with the highest virtues of Christ-like humility and burning love for God and neighbor, and received the gift of working wonders, of casting out demons, and of discretion for leading souls to salvation. When he served the Divine Liturgy, an Angel served him visibly; he was also vouchsafed the visitation of the most holy Theotokos with the Apostles Peter and John. He was gathered to his Fathers on September 25, 1392. At the recovery of his holy relics on July 5th, 1422, his body and garments were found fragrant and incorrupt. His life was written by the monk Epiphanius, who knew him.' (Great Horologion)

In the early morning hours of December 2nd, 1805, Rostov was patrolling the skirmishing line near Bagration's detachment. Behind him he could see his army's campfires glowing. In front the French were covered by misty darkness. Rostov was exhausted. His eyes would close and his fancy appeared—now the Emperor, then Denísov or whirling Moscow memories. His hussar companion occasionally alerted him to steer his horse out of bushes.   He was disappointed his unit was not advancing and wanted to ask for permission to join the attack. He was dreaming about The Czar, envisioning how they would have a chance encounter and he would receive an assignment. He was confident he would do a superb job and develop a relationship with the sovereign.  How faithfully he would guard Alexander, tell him the truth and unmask any deceivers!   Rostov pictured how he would humiliate and kill an enemy of the state, either a Frenchman or a deceitful German ally, all in the presence of Alexander. Suddenly, a distant shout aroused him. He opened his eyes but only noticed the surrounding hills and white patches of snow. His mind veered toward his sister, who he wished to tell of his acquaintance with the Czar.  Soon enough, there noticeable sounds in the distance. It appeared to be commotion from a group. He noticed fires igniting all along the landscape.  The shouting grew louder.  He was near one of the main French camps. Rostov could hear French spoken but not the words. The voices merged into a roar only an army could produce.  The lights spread and he heard the triumphant shouting of the enemy – the famous, “Vive l'Empereur! Vive l'Empereur!”  He was witnessing inspired men, more genuine than anything in Rostov's camp.  The spectacle was so obvious that it attracted Generals Bagration and Dulgarukov. The latter suggested it was just a decoy.  Dulgarukov felt the main force retreated but Bagration realized his adversary was a force to be reckoned with and directed Rostov and a few others to investigate.  Rostov was frightened but thrilled to propel into danger.  Bagration called out for the group to not go beyond a certain stream. Rostov pretended not to hear the order. The French voices grew closer and soon enough there was shooting.  The Hussars presence may have been noticed but it also could have been excited French firing  into the air.   Rostov's group retreated back to Bagration.  Rostov reported that the French presence was consistent with previous scouting. Bagration thanked Rostov, who leaped at the opportunity to ask to join a squadron that would  advance.  Bagration allows Rostov to join his own unit, sensing he is meeting Ilya Rostov's son.  Rostov thanks the Lord and felt he was a step closer to becoming involved with the Emperor.    Tolstoy, as Narrator, lets us in on what was happening among the French. There was celebration because Napoleon was riding and sometimes walking through the camps while his written orders were being read.  This would cause the fires, as soldiers would light wisps of straw and run after him; and others would fire guns into the air.   Further, the soldiers knew the critical battle would be fought on the anniversary of Napoleon's coronation, just a year prior at Notre Dame. This was considered a good omen. Tolstoy conveys Napoleon's inspirational and historic message. It includes: Soldiers! I direct all your battalions. I will keep out of fire if you -- with your habitual valor carry disorder and confusion into the enemy's ranks -- but should victory be in doubt, even for a moment, you will see your Emperor exposing himself to the first blows of the enemy, for there must be no doubt of victory, especially on this day when the honour of the French infantry is at stake, so necessary to the honour of our nation.

(Militarnyi.com)According to multiple Ukrainian outlets: the drone strike “ignited fire at a key railway hub in the Rostov Oblast”, specifying damage to locomotive tracks and fuel tank railcars. Firefighters responded overnight, extinguishing major flames by dawn 6th August. (United24media.com)Russian evacuation reports around the time confirm passenger train services halted for hours, and overhead electrification systems were disrupted.

His armies did not fight in multiple theaters, his empire did not span the Eurasian continent, and he did not inherit any of the spoils of war. That central role belonged to Joseph Stalin. The Second World War was not Hitler's war; it was Stalin's war. 1943 ROSTOV
