This book by Alan Woods is essential reading for all those who want to understand what is happening in Venezuela today. But this is no mere description of events. It is a powerful Marxist analysis of the Venezuelan Revolution, its weaknesses and strengths, its contradictions and unique characteristics. The book was not written with hindsight., Every chapter, beginning with the coup of April 2002, was written as the events themselves were unfolding, and traces the winding course of the revolution. They reflect the immediacy and lightning speed of events happening before our very eyes.Alan Woods has been a consistent champion of the Venezuelan Revolution since its inception. He helped initiate the Hands Off Venezuela Campaign. He has held personal discussions with Hugo Chavez, which are recounted in this book. The author concludes that the Venezuelan Revolution cannot stop half-way and holds up the perspective of a victorious socialist transformation. It explains that only by expropriating the power of the oligarchy could it succeed and spread to the rest of the continent. This analysis is thus incredibly pertinent given recent events in the country.circa un anno fa #the venezuelan revolution: a mBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Read the transcript of this podcast: https://therealnews.com/from-haiti-to-minneapolis-anti-colonial-resistance-catches-white-supremacy-by-surpriseResistance is everywhere, but everywhere a surprise, especially when the agents of struggle are the colonized, the enslaved, the wretched of the earth. Anticolonial revolts and slave rebellions have often been described by those in power as “eruptions”—volcanic shocks to a system that does not, cannot, see them coming. In his new book, Anticolonial Eruptions: Racial Hubris and the Cunning of Resistance, Geo Maher diagnoses a paradoxical weakness built right into the foundations of white supremacist power, a colonial blind spot that grows as domination seems more complete. TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez interviews Maher about his book and what understanding the dynamics of anticolonial eruptions, past and present, can tell us about the historical moment we're in and the task ahead of us.Geo Maher is an organizer, writer, radical political theorist, co-editor of the Duke University Press series Radical Américas, and Visiting Associate Professor at Vassar College. He is the author of numerous books, including We Created Chávez: A People's History of the Venezuelan Revolution; Building the Commune: Radical Democracy in Venezuela; Decolonizing Dialectics; A World Without Police; and Anticolonial Eruptions: Racial Hubris and the Cunning of Resistance.Pre-Production/Studio: Dwayne GladdenPost-Production: Adam ColeyHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

He is also the author of Decolonizing Dialectics and two books on radical politics in Venezuela, We Created Chavez: A People’s History of the Venezuelan Revolution, and Building The Commune: Radical Democracy in Venezuela. We talk to Ciccariello-Maher about the current coup attempt in Venezuela, Juan Guaido, Nicolas Maduro, the opposition, and Chavismo in as much complexity as possible. We do so in hopes that this discussion will shed light on some misconceptions, over simplifications, and in the process illuminate different possibilities for solidarity with the revolutionary movement in Venezuela against the forces of global capitalism. This episode was very special to me, as Drexel University professor George Ciccariello-Maher sits down to discuss various subjects regarding the American right's reaction to his Twitter comments as well as the state of political discouse in America. The real meat and potatoes for this episode is Venezuela, a nation currently in a state of turmoil that has been so drastic it seems almost impossible to work out of. His literary work has been indexed here, and includes We Created Chávez: A People's History of the Venezuelan Revolution, Building the Commune: Radical Democracy in Venezuela, and Decolonizing Dialectics. All of his works are available at Amazon.com, also indexed here. This podcast is powered by ZenCast.fm
