I thought this might be of interest as an interview about an unexplained creative experience at the intersection of consciousness, imagination, and the mystery of where stories come from. After a baseball-sized brain tumor upended Barry Maher's career, he went into surgery not knowing what kind of life would be waiting for him afterward. What he woke up with was something he never expected: a full-blown, vivid, horrific story playing in his mind, like a memory of something he had just watched. Ultimately that story became the seed of Maher's new novel, The Great Dick: And the Dysfunctional Demon (Crystal Lake Publishing), whose title parodies both The Great Gatsby and Moby-Dick. Maher, a nationally syndicated humorist, does not claim to know exactly how the story materialized, or where it came from. Was it an anesthesia-induced hallucination? The result of a seizure during surgery? Something his unconscious mind had somehow assembled? Or something stranger? But he does know that the experience did not feel like either ordinary dreaming or conscious invention. It felt less like making something up than remembering something that had already happened. And that left him with questions he still thinks about: Is the conscious mind always where a story begins? Or is it sometimes where something already formed finally rises into awareness? Cornell University geochemist Louis Derry joins @geoengineering1 to discuss a fundamental question for enhanced rock weathering: how much of the alkalinity generated in soils actually makes it through watersheds to the ocean? Derry argues that many studies and commercial MRV approaches focus on the top 10-30 cm of soil, potentially missing critical processes along the full flow path, including ion exchange in acidic soils, secondary clay formation, acidity generation and carbonate precipitation, which can reduce alkalinity export before it reaches streams.He highlights hydrological constraints, arguing that limited runoff and realistic alkalinity concentrations make proposed removal rates of 5-10 tonnes of CO₂ per hectare per year difficult to achieve across typical row-crop regions. When a broken heart turns into a blueprint, one woman can quietly change the fate of thousands. In this episode, Christine sits down with Sister Lucy Kurien, the visionary founder of Maher (“Mother's Home”), an interfaith, caste-free network of homes for women, children, and men in India. Called to ServeSister Lucy Kurien was born in 1956 in Kolayad, Kannur District, Kerala, India. After several years of formal education, at age 14 she moved to Mumbai, where she was profoundly distressed by the appalling poverty and squalor in the city. Having carried a strong inner desire for justice since childhood, she felt a deep calling to make a difference in the lives of the poor and famished around her. In 1980, she joined Sisters of the Cross, a religious order. It was a difficult decision that meant giving up the bliss of an independent and free life. After 4 years of training, she was professed to the order.The Birth of MaherSister Lucy started Maher activities in a small home in Vadhu Budruk, near Bhima Koregaon on the Ahmednagar highway. Her tireless efforts and the work of the dedicated staff led to the expansion of Maher activities to nearby areas. These include the villages in Shirur, Haveli and Khed talukas, as well as the city of Ratnagiri, Miraj & Satara in Maharashtra. Beyond Maharashtra, Maher has established homes in Kerala, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Karnataka, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. In 2011, unable to ignore the plight of abandoned men on the streets, Maher opened its first home for destitute, aged, and mentally challenged men. Today Maher reaches the life of the poorest of the poor through as many as 25 different outreach projects, including 672 village self-help groups and 75 interfaith, caste-free homes that currently shelter 996 children and 292 men and over 798 destitute women.
