Being a survivor in the modeling industry involves a complete reassessment with your body, sexuality, and sense of self. Today we sat down with Nikki DuBose, an American former model and the founder of Live ED Free, an EDIT™Certified Eating Disorder Recovery Coaching Service, to discuss her experience as a survivor within the modeling and entertainment industry. She is a Psy.D. student in Clinical Psychology at Meridian University and holds a B.A. in psychology from California Southern University with honors. She received her training as an Eating Disorder Recovery Coach Specialist through the EDIT ™ Certified Program under Dr. Dorie McCubbrey, PhD, MSEd, LPC, LAC, CEDS. DuBose takes us through the misinformation that lots of models face, the history of vulnerability that many face, and how she has learned to live with her PTSD through her rebellious acts of self-love. Topics/Triggers: The abundance of eating disorders, her history of anorexia and bulimia, and the abuse that many models face while on the job The need for modeling agencies to have more mental health education to assist their clients How every person has a story, regardless of what you may see on Instagram and in magazines How what we look like does not inform who we are, what our vulnerabilities are, and whether or not we are susceptible to trauma Retraumatization and how to cope with a career that asks you to go back to the place where you were victimized Healing by asking for help, specifically with RAINN (Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network) Setting our own boundaries to center ourselves and our own needs Overcoming shame as it pertains to trauma Reclaiming authority and agency in life by taking back what was lost as an act of rebellious self-love Her experience with PTSD and recovery That we are all born with the right to love, shelter, and food and we should not be afraid to speak up for those needs, especially in the “after” Finding pleasure and meaning in life again. For more details on DuBose's story, check out her memoir Washed Away: From Darkness to Light. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ If you took anything away from today's podcast, please share it with someone who may need to hear it. Nikki DuBose joins us today on The SHAIR podcast. Nikki is a former model turned author, speaker and mental health advocate. Her debut memoir, Washed Away: From Darkness to Light, was released September 30, 2016. In Washed Away, Nikki recounts her experiences navigating the dark side of the modeling industry, while battling abuse, addiction, and various mental health issues. She recently appeared in the Oprah Winfrey Network on the T.D Jakes show to speak about her recovery from body dysmorphic order and eating disorders and how the pressure to fit into the modeling industry nearly killed her. Tara Nicole DuBose was born in 1985 in Charleston, South Carolina to Sandra Pierce and Wayne DuBose. Her mother was an artist and her father was a delivery salesman for local food companies. Sandra named her “Tara” after the fictional plantation in the film, Gone with the Wind, directed by Victor Fleming. Despite Sandra's love for the name, she and Wayne often referred to Tara as “Nikki,” short for Nicole, and so the name stuck. After her parents divorced when Nikki was two, she and her younger brother were raised by their mother and stepfather. Her upbringing was filled with problems; Nikki suffered abuse of all kinds and was a witness to domestic violence. Her mother, Sandra, was afflicted with severe mental health conditions and drank heavily. As a result, Nikki suffered for over seventeen years from a wide range of mental health conditions. Join us now as Nikki takes us through her battle with addiction and her journey into recovery up until today!

Tonight's special guest is Nikki DuBose from Los Angeles, a child abuse survivor who was later abused as a young professional model. Among other things, Nikki advocates on her web site for better regulation of the modeling industry (she tells me about 40% of models have an eating disorder and that there's a lot of sexual abuse/harassment). Nikki also works closely with Matt Sandusky at the "Peaceful Hearts Foundation," where she serves on the Executive Board and is their Volunteer Director. Nikki says, "I wholeheartedly believe that full recovery is possible, but it starts with speaking out and reducing the shame and stigma that is so often attached to mental health issues." In her upcoming memoir, "Washed Away: From Darkness to Light," due out later this year, Nikki details how being sexually abused as a child led to a seventeen-year battle with serious mental health issues such as eating disorders, depression, self-harm, body dysmorphic disorder, substance abuse and sexual addictions. During her career as a professional model, she encountered a great deal of success, yet that prosperity came with a high price - one that often mirrored the sexual abuse from her childhood. Coming to a place of full healing has not been easy for Nikki, but she says, "Being an advocate is what allows me to wake up every day and feel truly alive. All of that pain that I lived with for so many years is now channeled into making a difference in society. Whatever issues you're passionate about, use your voice and the resources you have; love yourself first and from there you can help to change the world."
