Prosecutors in Indiana have dropped murder charges against Steven Valle, 31, and Samantha Sebella, 25, who were accused of killing two children and burning their bodies in a backyard firepit. The couple was previously facing charges of murder, neglect of a dependent causing death, abuse of a corpse, and failure to report a dead body. However, the Jasper County Prosecutor's Office filed a motion to dismiss the charges on Wednesday, and a judge granted the request without prejudice, meaning the case could be refiled later. Jasper County Prosecutor Jacob Taulman explained that part of the reason for the dismissal was to allow anthropologists to continue analyzing ashes, debris, and other materials found in the firepit. He described the process as challenging due to the small size of the evidence. Prosecutors are also reviewing digital data from phones and other devices in connection with the case. “We do intend to seek justice in this manner,” Taulman said. Valle's attorney, however, argued that the charges should not be reinstated, stating that there was no evidence to suggest a crime occurred. He expressed hope that the dismissal would bring an end to the matter. The investigation began on Sept. 20 when a friend of the couple contacted authorities after Valle allegedly confessed, saying, "I killed my two kids." Valle reportedly told the friend that the children had been smothered and drowned, and their bodies burned in the firepit at their home. The deceased children, referred to as "undocumented," were reportedly never given any official documentation. Authorities later found Valle and Sebella at a hotel in Newton County. They denied involvement, but investigators seized their phones as evidence, and a third undocumented child was removed from their custody. On Sept. 30, investigators, including law enforcement and cadaver dogs, searched the couple's former residence in Wheatfield, where they found bone fragments in three locations. Tests confirmed that the fragments were human. Further investigation revealed text messages between Valle and Sebella that seemed to suggest their involvement in the children's deaths. Sebella allegedly referred to Valle as a “baby killer,” and the texts also included references to the children's DNA being preserved in Sebella's body. Investigators also found a "Baby Center" app on Sebella's phone documenting her pregnancies. During questioning, Valle reportedly admitted that Sebella had given birth to a boy in 2018, but the child was found dead when he arrived home. Valle claimed he cleaned and wrapped the boy in a blanket, then buried him in the backyard. He also described a second child, a premature girl who he said died shortly after birth. The children were allegedly buried for several years before Valle reportedly exhumed their bodies and burned them in the firepit. He later kept some of the ashes as a memento. While charges have been dismissed for now, authorities have indicated that the investigation will continue as they work to piece together evidence in the case. Tonight's special guest is Beth Donahue from Port Richey, Florida, a returning NAASCA family member who has not been with us since 2013. Beth is a survivor who was sexually abused by 3 men as a child, but she's been an advocate for children most of her adult life. "I was involved with helping start the organization The Innocence Revolution," Beth reminds us. "I have been to the Massachusetts State house to testify in changing the laws to abolish the statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse," she says, "and also have been to Washington DC to advocate for children by speaking with Representatives and Senators on why it is so important to pass the laws to keep children safe." But Beth's paid a price because of her advocacy, too. "I have been targeted by my family and have lost friends and people I love," she explains, "mainly because I wouldn't waiver on my beliefs that children should be put first and no one has the right to ever abuse them in any way, shape or form." I will be starting The Innocence Revolution up again this year as I feel it was very successful and should not be ignored any longer. We did some great work and need to continue." Beth tells me that she has a lot of information to offer about the targeting that goes on as a victim / survivor / activist in adulthood, and how to expose it. Tonight's special guest is Darlene Pawlik from Manchester, New Hampshire, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) who's been an anti-abuse and recovery advocate for more than 20 years. "I was conceived by rape, grew up feeling worth less than others," she says. "I was a target of human trafficking at 13, sold into prostitution on my 14th birthday, faked an abortion to get free from the man holding me." But Darlene's a fighter. "I left school in the seventh grade, but taught myself enough to obtain a GED and attend nursing school. I believe everyone is responsible for their own education. I grew up impoverished and lived on the streets for a few years." She eventually gave her life over to God. "I was ordained for youth ministry in 1998." She's helped a lot of people in her adulthood. As a nurse, Darlene often addresses issues surrounding human dignity in long term care. "I've spoken in many venues," she explains, "including the New Hampshire Legislature, public events, radio and TV interviews, schools, churches, youth groups and other groups around New England and the nation. Some time ago she wrote her story in a book, "Testimony, The Dark Side of Christianity," under the pseudonym Darling Princess, and began to work with other organizations. We're delighted to have her as a member of the NAASCA family!

Tonight's special guests are Bob Brader and Suzanne Bachner from New York City, both survivors. Bob's childhood abuse was at the hands of his father, who was a predator to a number of friends and relatives, too. After Bob finally escaped from his father, he found himself lashing out and abusing alcohol. The long process and practice of writing and telling his own story, and working with prevention organizations, have truly transformed Bob. Suzanne's sexual abuse started when she was 11 and attacked by two of her trusted peers. The main perpetrator of her sexual abuse was a close family friend. She has been on a long, slow journey of healing and recovery through therapy and through writing about sexuality, power dynamics, intimacy and sexual abuse. The married couple share a lot more in their lives, too. Bob is an actor and writer and Suzanne is a playwright and director. They're a theatrical team who have partnered on many amazing shows together including two award-winning solo shows (written and performed by Bob Brader) called 'Spitting In The Face Of The Devil' and 'Smoker'. Suzanne's job is as his director/developer. "We have toured them internationally and they have been widely acclaimed and won many awards," Suzanne writes. "We have partnered with several prevention organizations to raise funds and awareness as well." We'll hear about efforts they've supported in the past and their plans for the future on tonight's show. We wish them every success and welcome Bob and Suzanne to the NAASCA family !!

Tonight's special guest is Karen Mills from Canyon Country, California, a returning NAASCA family member who we're delighted to be connecting with again. Karen was born in Malaysia to unknown parents, and adopted by a single mother at 2 months old. Her adoptive single mother (Chinese) immediately departed for England and left Karen behind, returning when Karen was 6. Karen was physically, verbally, emotionally and even sexually abused for 11 years by her mother and a cousin. Her mom would regularly threaten to “throw her out to live in the gutter”. The young Karen was a naturally exuberant, energetic and happy child .. but from 6-18 years was kept on a tight leash. In adulthood Karen succeed. She especially excelled in the computing industry, but inside her soul was dying a slow death. She began to explore her natural artistic and creative self, and relocated to Santa Clarita in 2003 where she began teaching adults art. In 2011 Karen stumbled upon the “Survivor to Thriver” manual from The Morris Center's ASCA program. She found the words to explain her childhood and her subsequent life. Karen is no longer reactive but is pro-active and empowered. She has overcome not only childhood abuse but the bias against her as a Chinese adopted girl with no rights, growing up in a fundamental Muslim country. "Because I am a survivor," Karen says, "it used to make me feel better about myself when I was helping others. Now I find in supporting other survivors, I am learning a lot, and it has facilitated a deeper healing within me."

Q & A Night - You'll suggest the themes for tonight's show, which will involve any topic from the world of public safety, violence prevention, and child abuse and trauma. Special co-host Dr. Debra Warner, Psy.D., a Los Angeles based Forensic Psychologist and a professor at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, will help lead the discussion. ~~ NAASCA is pleased to announce that Debra will be making regular special co-host appearances on upcoming Tuesday night question-and-answer style community participation shows. Tonight's special guest is Jessa Dillow from Denver, Colorado, who tells us she was sexually abused by family members as a child. "This sexual abuse soon turned into them making child ography of my naked body and sex trafficking," she explains. But her traumas didn't end there. "When I was twenty-one years old, I was able to escape, but due to the fact that I was very vulnerable, this new found freedom did not last, and I ended up in a another trafficking situation where through force, fraud, and coercion, my body once again became the property of another pimp." She goes on, "Since my second escape, I have gone through extensive healing and am now working on my M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling as a step towards my Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology to specialize in trauma recovery." Jessa's story and a video about her experiences can be found in a recent Global Citizen article, part of a series called "Real Women Real Stories," a social project designed to promote awareness of the often unseen hardships women face in different professions and places around the world. The project highlights women who fight their battles and are persistent on achieving what they have set out for. A respected speaker, writer, and mentor, Jessa uses her childhood experience of severe abuse and trafficking to illustrate both the stark realities of sex trafficking, and the truth that healing transformation is possible.

SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "Examining Institutional Abuse" with special co-host Dr Jill Jones-Solderman (PhD, MSW, MSHS), a NAASCA family member. Tonight's special guest is Harold Glen Hull from Puyallup, Washington, a survivor of sexual, physical and emotional abuse as a child, and now a motivational speaker at Quest for Survival. Glen was born three months premature but his twin sister passed away three hours after birth. It took months for him to be released from the hospital, and his mother wanted nothing to do with him. "She told everyone that I should have died like her little girl had," Glen says. When he was 5 his father left the family. "Every day I was physically beaten by my mother. She got great pleasure seeing my pain and fear of her." Abuses happened elsewhere, too. When he was 10 he was raped and sexually abused for the first time by a neighbor man." Glen says the man forced him to do things that to this day he's never told anyone. The neighbor went on to rape him many times after that night. "I was taken out of my mother's home when I was 12 years old," Glen tells me. He became a ward of the state. "In the boys home we were physically and sexually abused by the clergy and the older boys." As a young man Glen was very violent and put himself in constant danger "trying to get killed." He joined the Army in 1972 and wanted to go to Vietnam, but never faced combat in 30 years of service. In the Army, Glen received counseling. "I was called upon to speak with children and young adults who had been in abusive homes and families," he says. "After sharing my story in the groups and having it written about in the base paper I realized that I could actually help other childhood abuse survivors." Glen is now a writer, speaker and advocate against child abuse. "It is okay to give ourselves time to heal," he explains. "We were victims! Now we are survivors!"

Tonight's special guest is Charles Greene from Sicklerville, New Jersey, author of the book "My Journey: Life after Addiction - The Lazarus Man." He grew up in a dysfunctional family, filled with anger, rage and violence. His father, a drug addict and alcoholic, was completely unpredictable. Charles describes his angry, violent father as "a man at war with the world and himself." He further explains, "Our lives were a paradoxical existence. One moment he was a calm, creative and artistic chef, preparing gourmet meals that fully satisfied our bellies and the next he was raising hell and creating an atmosphere of paralyzing fear with his violent, unpredictable behavior, which consisted of screaming, yelling, cursing and slamming doors. We lived in fear. I feared that one day, he'd kill me." It got worse in his teenage years. "My dad made it a habit of introducing me to his girlfriends. He continually involved me in his adulterous relationships." He goes on, "When I left home for college, and was set free from the prison of my home life, I rebelled spiritually, physically and emotionally." But addictions brought him to his knees, and it was in the rooms of Narcotics Anonymous where Charles tells me God completed the transformation in his life. "Clarity came to me. The purpose for my life became evident," Charles says. In recovery, he began to work with others. "Working with individuals with mental illness and substance use disorders has provided me with the opportunity to help those who traveled the road I once traveled."

Tonight's special guest is Nadia Ackerman from Brooklyn, New York, a child sexual abuse survivor, songwriter and artist, who's featured in the HealthiNation short documentary film, 'Time to Live Again', which was released in early December, 2016. Originally from Australia, Nadia opens up about the sexual abuse she suffered when she was a child. "I was sexually abused from the age of 6 for three years by the father of a family who moved in across the road from us in Sydney, Australia," Nadia explains. "The only reason it stopped is because they moved." The experiences stayed locked up inside her for quite a while. "I had my first flash back at 21. That's when I realized something horrific had happened to me," she says. Nadia suffered night terrors, PTSD, disassociation, suicidal thoughts and depression. "In my early 30's I had an emotional breakdown that lead me on the path to healing. My greatest tool was ending up with a therapist who specializes in EMDR here in NYC." Nadia was able to heal herself and turn her past into something positive. Her songs and drawings are thematically centered around childhood, and contain whimsical characters and settings. There are, however, some heartbreaking aspects to her art - and that sadness becomes even more apparent once you understand Nadia's past. Hers is a story of hope, told from the perspective of a true survivor. Yes, Nadia's past is painful and sad, but she has been able to spin it into a positive light by channeling her feelings into her art. She hopes to become a mentor to young girls and boys, and to encourage them to speak up about abuse.

Tonight's special guest is Barbara Myers-Pressley from Copperas Cove, Texas, who was physically, mentally and sexually abused by her biological father. It lasted until her parents divorced. "The abuse would be done in the dark of the night or while my family was away," Barbara says. "He even took me on out of town trips when he was required to go for his employment. I always wondered why my mother never asked any questions, as to why are you taking her with you. I believe she knew I was being abused, but we were all terrified of him and she didn't do anything." That's because her abuser was also a volunteer Sheriff's Deputy. Barbara eventually joined the military in 1989 and never looked back. She has not seen her father since she was 16 years old, and has no desire to have a relationship with him. "I have a strained relationship with my mother," Barbara explains. "During the years she has not come to terms with the fact that I was abused by the man that she loved and married." But things are looking up now, as Barbara finally sought help in the past couple of years. "Three things have helped me with this process. One is having a good support system, my husband, mother, grandmother, and friends. Two, was seeking professional help. I was prescribed medications for the anxiety the abuse has only intensified. And lastly, I wrote down each and every act that my abuser did to me." Barbara always thought she was the only one but reports that he was eventually convicted for sexually assaulting another child, spent some time in prison and is now a registered sex offender. In 2005 her brother confessed that he was also abused by their father. Barbara writes. "I am finally free, I have told the family secret, his secret."

Tonight's special guest is Joyce Bowen from Salem, Massachusetts, who says, "I've found that child abuse survivors are viewed as damaged goods. I see pity in people's eyes." She goes on, "I share my experiences with you not to elicit pity. I want to elicit action." And she says how .. and why. "Use your voice and your keyboard to shout for better care for children. One child dies every five hours. I say, don't see me and my ordeal—understand that there are children out there right this second that are undergoing the same kind of ordeal." Joyce suffers from Complex PTSD and suffered Complex Trauma. She asks, "A child needs love, but what is love? For me, if someone didn't abuse me, they didn't love me. Why I didn't perpetuate this kind of abuse, I'll never know. I started to," she notes. "Everything inside me screamed I could not do to my children what had been done to me, yet I worshipped my mother until well into adulthood" She's given it a lot of thought. "I've mulled over what constant fear must do to the developing brain. I have traits that I view as being hardwired. I have an acute awareness of my surroundings. I am in constant survival mode to this day." Joyce considers herself lucky. "I chose a course of action that helps me understand the effects of trauma. I studied psychology. I've been crawling around in my own brain for years. I've succeeded in alleviating some of the effects. The current trend in psychotherapy is to keep evaluative thoughts a secret from the patient, much like medicine years ago." Joyce says that children's protective services are underfunded. "There aren't enough social workers working in the field. It is my belief many are too inexperienced to recognize this kind of abuse."

Tonight's special guest is Kiesa Kay, a returning NAASCA family member who now resides in North Carolina. She's a forensic interviewer and author of numerous works including the play "Sky Eyes" and her new book, "Tornado Alley," available though Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com. "The first one is a play I wrote that helped me heal my relationship with my mother," Kiesa says, "and the scond one is a first person narrative about my experiences of abuse in the USA as a child and part of the healing journey in France as an adult." She wants to talk about survivor issues for the holidays and will describe what it's like to be a forensic interviewer, talking to children and teens when they've witnessed violent crimes, like murder, and listening to them when allegations of abuse and neglect arise. Her work is groundbreaking. In the past, Kiesha spent her work days interviewing children and teens who'd experienced rape, abuse, and neglect, and who'd witnessed violent crimes. When allegations arose, Kiesa listened, helping bring truth to light. She also facilitated a support group for non-offending caregivers. For a decade, Kiesa criss-crossed the country giving workshops on twice exceptional learners, specifically, children who have strong abilities and learning disabilities. Before that, she worked with survivors of incest and domestic violence, and volunteered on a crisis line. She'll tell you she's guided by three principles: (1) Create meaning in every facet of life, (2) Stop the suffering of all sentient beings, and (3) Be kind to whoever crosses your path. Kiesa specializes in workshops on ending child abuse, powerful parenting and creative writing. She's also engaged in family advocacy, and home school consultations.

Q & A Night - You'll suggest the themes for tonight's show, which will involve any topic from the world of public safety, violence prevention, and child abuse and trauma. Special co-host Dr. Debra Warner, Psy.D., a Los Angeles based Forensic Psychologist and a professor at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, will help lead the discussion. ~~ NAASCA is pleased to announce that Debra will be making regular special co-host appearances on upcoming Tuesday night question-and-answer style community participation shows. An educator and violence prevention expert, Dr. Warner will assist SCAN host and NAASCA founder Bill Murray field questions and lead a variety of topic discussions suggested by our call-in participants. Debra's understanding of the issues of child abuse and trauma spring not only from a professional perspective, but also from a personal one. Multiple members of her own family have been victims of predators. Tonight's special guest is Christine Walters from Washington, DC, a survivor of child abuse and neglect who was born in Buffalo, New York, but grew up in Fort Myers, Florida. She's author of the book "Ginny and Me: Reflections of What God Can Do" hoping to help others cope during difficult times. She says, "There are many people who need to let go of pain in their lives and seek God." The book is a deeply personal story about her troubled relationship with her mother, who lived with a severe mental illness. Ginny (her mother) died unexpectedly at Christmas season, and was buried later on Mother's Day weekend. Abuse is damaging, Christine points out, and comes from cycles of abusive behaviors learned and repeated through generations. "In my case, most of the abuse I suffered resulted from my mother's mental illness. For my entire life, people told me to excuse my mom's abuse because she was mentally ill. However, mental illness does not give anyone the right to abuse you (in particular, your child)." Ginny lived in the Buffalo State Hospital through her adolescent years. When released from the hospital at 26 years old, she had Christine. Her dad was thirty years older. Her mother was white, and her father was black. "As a child, I struggled with my mixed heritage. My mom would tell me that white people did not like me because I was black." There was a lot of confusion. "Even from a religious standpoint, I was raised as a Catholic and Baptist." Christine's story is about how faith enabled her to overcome extraordinary struggles, pain, and loss. "Faith, hope, and forgiving the unforgivable through prayer and trusting in God are the keys to healing."

Tonight's special guest is Jillian Stringer Short from the Washington, DC, area, a child abuse survivor and member of our CSA Survivor Force, a group that seeks to better inform and partner with media to spread awareness. Jill is the founder of Always a Voice (www.alwaysavoice.com), a local and web-based support group, committed to providing encouragement and awareness to adult survivors of child sexual abuse (CSA) and other forms of trauma. "I was subjected to sexual abuse until I was seven," Jill says. "When I was twelve, my parents and I went to Micronesia as missionaries with Evangelism Missions Inc. I loved it!" Her abuse became a distant memory, buried and unaddressed. "Years later, still deep in the clutches of my church affiliation, I married a man who was physically abusive, with the church's backing." She goes on, "Then the unthinkable happened. I discovered my children were being sexually abused. My world crashed around me." Jill explains the lack of support from friends, especially within the church, astounded her. "We were told to forgive and honor our abuser. They strictly instructed us to be silent, even telling us not to press charges, stating that 'speaking out about our abuse gave the church, and thus, Jesus Christ, a bad name'. He only served an 18-month sentence. After his release, he was brought back into church leadership." Eventually Jill left what she calls her 'toxic church' and her marriage, and began the slow, upward path toward recovery. "My children began to truly heal. I was amazed to learn more about Child Sexual Abuse and its effects on us as adults. I surrounded myself with life-changing resources, and positive support." We're delighted to have Jill as a member of the NAASCA family.
