"Eating disorders are dissociative by nature. It's very difficult to be connected to your feelings while you're engaging in eating disorder behaviors. So it makes a lot of sense that people develop eating disorders as a way of keeping themselves as “safe” as possible." In this special episode, Abbie is joined by the incredible Monica Ostroff, a therapist and eating disorders specialist, to explore Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and its overlooked intersection with eating disorders. They also have a deeper conversation about the relationship between trauma and disordered eating. Monika shares her personal journey, detailing her experiences with anorexia and trauma, and how these experiences shaped her professional path in the field of eating disorders.  Listen to hear more about: The misconceptions surrounding DID  Trauma-related origins of both DID and eating disorders Taking a strengths-based perspective in recovery Trauma-informed approaches to treatment The complex relationship between trauma, eating disorders, and self-compassion Understanding our internal voices Using inner world tools for healing  The protective nature of eating disorders What it means to be gentle in recovery Addressing the challenges of worthlessness Coping with societal pressures surrounding body image Why healing is really about connection How we can show up for ourselves with kindness and understanding So much more! Yeah, we've all been there. But what if that intense food drama could just… disappear? No guilt, no shame, no last-supper mentality—just food, doing what food is supposed to do: nourish and satisfy. So, if you've ever felt trapped in food rules, if “cheat days” have ever dictated your weekend plans, or if you're just curious what the next step in healing your relationship with food looks like—this episode is for you.  Elyse Resch, MS, RDN, CEDS-C, Fiaedp, FADA, FAND, is a nutrition therapist in private practice with forty-three years of experience, specializing in eating disorders, Intuitive Eating, and Health at Every Size. I never talk about recovery. What happens when “just eat” isn't the solution, and the stakes are literally life or death? Picture this: you're at the dinner table. In this episode, I'm joined by Susannah Neufeld—a licensed psychotherapist, certified eating disorder specialist and consultant, author, and all-around badass about how FBT turns the chaos of food fights into moments of healing. Spoiler alert: it's as heartwarming as it is messy. Tweetable Quotes "You know your kid the best, and I know a lot about eating disorders, and we're going to work together to figure this out." - Suzannah Neufeld "When your kid yells at you, you're getting a gift because you're getting to see what's happening inside their head... if you can respond to it with strength and love, they're going to internalize that." - Suzannah Neufeld "FBT really supports the idea that the kid is not alone in it. They're part of a team working on this." - Suzannah Neufeld "The kid is not the one who's lying. The kid is not the one who might hide the food. That's the illness. That's the eating disorder that's doing that." - Suzannah Neufeld "I'm not going to be the person who saves you or your family. You're saving your own life, and I'm on the journey with you." - Rachelle Heinemann  Resources A network that supports the Bay Area ED care community. Dr. Hiestand breaks down how these tools aren't just fancy words but game-changers for the nervous system, helping people find calm, reconnect, and heal in profound ways. Whether you're curious or already a fan of these approaches, this episode is packed with mind-blowing insights, practical takeaways, and a dash of nerdy neuroscience fun. HEAR FROM DANIELLE ABOUT DANIELLE! I have been passionate about learning and helping others most of my life. I am originally from Northern California and was overjoyed to study at University of California, San Diego and to live near the ocean. After receiving my Bachelors of Science in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience and Psychology I stayed in San Diego to complete my doctorate in Marital and Family Therapy at Alliant International University and become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #48529). While at college, I took a course on eating disorders and began to volunteer with a program that focused on eating disorder prevention. I knew I wanted to be a therapist and help people heal and recover from their eating disorders. I planted my roots in San Diego and began working at an eating disorder treatment program. It was clear early on that most of my clients had a trauma history. Some had never called what they went through “trauma,” but could see how their life experiences had contributed to the development of their eating disorder. Others knew they had gone through something that still bothered them in the present, but didn't know how to talk about it or how to heal.  During this time I acquired extensive experience treating anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, complex PTSD, dissociative disorders, depression, and anxiety. I also began my training in EMDR therapy; a treatment that has become crucial to my therapeutic approach. To help clients on their journey toward healing I also utilize systems theory, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), acceptance commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness. My overall goal is to work collaboratively with clients in order to honor their treatment goals. In 2013 Kelly Hinds, RDN and I created Savor Podcast. For three years we recorded episodes on nutrition, body image, mindfulness, yoga, eating disorders, dieting, EMDR therapy and beyond. Past Savor podcast episodes are available here. Before starting my family, I was an adjunct professor at University of California, San Diego, Alliant International University and San Diego State University. I taught classes on eating disorders, stress management, social psychology, and assessment. After my family started to grow, I decided to slow down and work part-time in my Mission Valley private practice in San Diego, California.  I work toward providing a calm, safe and grounded space for you to feel comfortable sharing your successes and your struggles. A journey back to self always has ups, downs and surprises. Together we can navigate how to find tools and strategies to help you cope and make space for yourself. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my husband and two daughters. I also love swimming, paddle boarding, and hiking. Maureen has lived through huge health challenges, but her outlook is still one of gratitude. After the passing of her father she has lived every day like it is her last, remembering to laugh and live in the moment. This mindset has helped her navigate a slew of health challenges. Maureen has been diagnosed with classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (CEDS), mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), postural orthostatic tachychardia syndrome (POTS), fibromyalgia and more. She is currently being evaluated for Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT), a hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy of the peripheral nervous system. In this episode of the Major Pain podcast, Maureen talks us through her health journey so far. Her journey ranges from a spondylolisthesis (spinal vertebra slipping out of place) and a back brace throughout senior year of high school, to years long issues with upper respiratory problems, to a recent brain surgery for hydrocephalus (accumulation of fluid in the brain) and even endometriosis. Maureen now has a shunt surgically implanted in her brain that drains fluid to her stomach. She tells us about going to the Ehlers-Danlos Clinic at the Mayo Clinic, where she learned about the crossover between EDS and fibromyalgia. Through it all, Maureen has cultivated a wealth of knowledge about navigating the medical system, and an incredible attitude of acceptance and perseverance. Are eating disorders actually a type of addiction? It's easy to think of eating disorders as, well, a disorder. But when we start to really dive into the nitty gritty, are they actually considered an addiction? In today's episode, I am joined by Iris Epstein. Since 2004, Iris Epstein RD, CDCES, CEDS-S, CAI has focused her career on eating disorder awareness, treatment, family coaching, and intervention at her practice in Pomona, New York. Her philosophy is one of compassion along with hard work to break through the determined mindset that takes hold of people with eating disorders. By addressing the medical and malnutrition issues that give eating disorders their strength, we can weaken the grip they have on our clients. Just as there are many causes for eating disorders, it often takes a variety of strategies to treat them. Iris is confident that her team at the Nutrition Improvement Center can help provide a successful path for our clients to resume a healthy and balanced relationship with food and their bodies. Iris recently graduated from the ARISE intervention program where she received her certification in family coaching and intervention work for addiction. She believes that the addiction model has a place in the eating disorder recovery process. Note: We're celebrating three amazing years of the Understanding Disordered Eating podcast! From an early age, we're taught that lying is bad. But, is it? What drives someone to lie? Is all lying inherently bad? How does lying intersect with our internal struggles and vulnerabilities? These are just a few questions I had before my conversation with Tom. There are a lot of reasons as to why someone may lie. But here's the thing - lying isn't a black-and-white issue, especially when it comes to individuals grappling with eating disorders. There's a profound connection between lying, shame, and vulnerability in this context. Tom Wooldridge, PsyD, ABPP, CEDS-S is Chair in the Department of Psychology at Golden Gate University as well as a psychoanalyst and board-certified, licensed psychologist. He has published journal articles and book chapters on topics such as eating disorders, masculinity, technology, and psychoanalytic treatment. He has written 3 books including, Understanding Anorexia Nervosa in Males (2016), Psychoanalytic Treatment of Eating Disorders: When Words Fail and Bodies Speak (2018), and Eating Disorders (New Introductions to Contemporary Psychoanalysis) (2022). Tweetable Quotes “How do we understand someone's relationship with the truth in a much more complex way as opposed to just saying ‘Well that's just someone's eating disorder.'” - Rachelle Heinemann "Often people have a kind of outward presentation of indifference or commitment to whatever behavior they're engaged in. But maybe, just maybe there's ambivalence in there." - Tom Wooldridge "You could say, well, there is a 0.5% chance that you'll die of the coronavirus. Well, that's just gonna make a kid anxious. What they need to hear is, no honey, it's gonna be okay." - Tom Wooldridge "I don't rule out that [confrontation] could never be productive. But for most patients, most of the time, they're lying for reasons." - Tom Wooldridge "Most of the time I would hope to get to a place where we could speak about the deception, but usually only after quite a bit of groundwork has been laid." - Tom Wooldridge Resources Grab the replay of my Basics of Assessment and Early Treatment of Eating Disorder Webinar Grab my Journal Prompts here! Pregnancy is beautiful (for some). Postpartum is raw. There is so much more to a person's fertility journey than just pregnancy. As a mother myself, I've experienced firsthand the pressures of bounce-back culture. It's everywhere - from social media ads to casual conversations. Content Warning: conversation on eating disorders and disordered eating: mentions of anorexia nervosa, bulimia, weight bias, and suicidal ideationHello friends. Today's topic is a big one and a sensitive one as well; today we're talking about eating disorders. It's a different type of conversation, though, because we're not going to talk about what they are and how to diagnose them, instead, we're going to talk about why they're so prevalent in our society and why they're underdiagnosed as well as myths perpetrated by the diet culture. I'm not tackling this subject alone, either. I've invited Dr. Cristina Castagnini, a licensed psychologist who focuses on helping women with food and body image struggles, to have this conversation with me. Cristina hosts the podcast ‘Behind the Bite' where eating disorders are talked about from a personal and professional perspective. This conversation is very necessary and Cristina is wonderful to have it with. Both Cristina and I have had our own journeys with body image and disordered eating, so we talk about that right from the start. Cristina came to her body image work a bit by accident. She wanted to focus on other issues when she encountered a patient she immediately identified as struggling with an eating disorder instead of solely the depression she came in with. Cristina realized, just like with her own treatment, that there still was no satisfactory answer of where could patients go to get real help for disordered eating. We talk about the links between diet culture and eating disorders and how diet culture has influenced medical and health care as well. Talk of losing weight almost always goes hand in hand with any health discussion when you live in a bigger body. Cristina's work and podcast aim to break those myths around weight, dieting, and health,  as well as address societal pressures. We also tackle the hard realities of weight loss injectables like Ozempic which are designed for diabetes treatment but are being openly offered as weight loss tools. This is a big topic and a deep conversation that I thank Cristina for having with me. It will absolutely open your eyes and help challenge some of your own biases.__About Cristina Castagnini, PhD:Cristina Castagnini, PhD, CEDS, is a licensed psychologist who focuses solely on helping women overcome their struggles with food and body image and to achieve a balanced life. How do you do therapy? Are there “rules”? What are they? Questions most of us have probably never considered before we start therapy. When we look at how the therapeutic relationship of therapy works, we have to consider the foundation of therapy, and what the deeper meaning is behind it. In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Dana Satir. We are breaking down the what's and why's of therapy, and sharing some metaphors along the way. Dr. Satir is a clinical psychologist who has been practicing in the eating disorders field for over twenty years. She received her doctorate from Boston University and completed her internship at Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Medical School. Her scholarship has been focused on the treatment relationship, specifically the therapist's experiences, and the psychoanalytic treatment of eating disorders. She has received grant funding from the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) and Children's Hospital Colorado, and she was awarded an early career fellowship from APsaA in 2013. Dr. Satir teaches courses on eating disorders and psychotherapy at the University of Denver and TZK webinars, hosts study groups, and provides case consultations with licensed clinicians. She maintains a psychoanalytic private practice in Boulder County, Colorado, where she primarily works with individuals who have experienced early developmental trauma and have a history of eating disorder symptoms as well as young adults in transition. Tweetable Quotes "The therapists that are working with patients with eating disorders are committed, deeply committed. And there's sort of an overarching idea of, we're in this together." - Dana Satir "If we think about therapy as a game, it's playful, If we can't play in therapy, then I think that that's something that we ought to talk about because there is some sort of playfulness that is appropriate to have." - Rachelle Heinemann "In therapy, the therapist doesn't share about their personal life, and the person in therapy shares everything about their life." - Rachelle Heinemann “This is almost the hallmark of an eating disorder is that we use an eating disorder to communicate." - Rachelle Heinemann "If it feels like holding that mystery is so anxiety-provoking, maybe we talk about what it would be like to know part of that." - Dana Satir Resources Dana Satir's Website - http://www.drdanasatir.com/
