My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is EB Mendel, author of the book If Frogs Could Fly. E.B. Mendel is an author in South Florida. If Frogs Could Fly is his first novel, and The Help of Angels, a historical novel, is his second. He has also recorded, produced, and published audiobooks from the same titles. He is currently getting ready to publish his 3rd novel, The Miraculous Adventures of Willy Maze. In my book review, I stated If Frogs Could Fly is a contemporary fiction complete with magical realism and adventure. What I found most amazing was that the book was originally written in 2016 but mirrors our recent COVID pandemic to a great degree. The story follows Ron Levine, a journalist, along with his wife and friends. Ron is invited to head to South America to find one of the lost tribes of Israel along with a crew put together by a Jewish Rabbi. Unfortunately, the crew finds more than they bargained for, including a new disease that spreads quickly throughout the world. EB shows us what a world with an incurable, transmittable disease might look like. He then pairs this epidemic with a 1960s style culture of drugs, trips, and music. I have to admit that I got a little lost at times and wondered what was real and what wasn't. I suspect that was what EB hoped to have happen! If you like a book that feels like a psychedelic dream, then If Frogs Could Fly might just be for you. The Barbell Mamas Podcast | Pregnancy, Postpartum, Pelvic Health
Fear nearly kept me from motherhood. Growing up watching my mother battle severe mental health challenges that began in her postpartum period with twins left me terrified that history might repeat itself. That deeply personal story opens our candid exploration of postpartum depression and anxiety—conditions that affect countless women who suffer in silence. What exactly distinguishes normal "baby blues" from actual mood disorders requiring intervention? When does typical new-parent worry cross the line into clinical anxiety? These questions remain frustratingly difficult to answer, particularly with postpartum anxiety, which lacks the research attention and screening tools that depression has received. Many high-achieving women dismiss their symptoms as merely being "type A" or having "perfectionist tendencies," missing opportunities for early intervention. The most exciting development in this field comes from emerging research showing that exercise—specifically accumulating 120 minutes weekly of moderate activity—provides significant protection against postpartum mood disorders. This evidence helped transform international guidelines away from mandatory six-week exercise restrictions. When you're in a vulnerable low-estrogen state that predisposes you to depression, movement becomes more than physical rehabilitation—it's mental health medicine. For mothers struggling with depression symptoms who can barely get out of bed, the standard exercise prescription can feel impossible. That's where "movement snacks" prove transformative—just 5-10 minutes of activity can provide immediate mood benefits. Starting small and building gradually creates momentum when traditional workouts seem overwhelming. Most importantly, we must normalize asking for help. The cultural expectation that mothers should silently shoulder their burdens does immeasurable harm. As one poignant quote reminds us: "I want you to bother me." Your friends want to support you through difficult times, not just celebrate the happy moments. They want to sit with you in vulnerability without judgment.Ready to break the silence around maternal mental health? Share this episode with someone who might need permission to reach out. Remember that no matter where you are in your motherhood journey, you never need to face these challenges alone.___________________________________________________________________________Don't miss out on any of the TEA coming out of the Barbell Mamas by subscribing to our newsletter You can also follow us on Instagram and YouTube for all the up-to-date information you need about pelvic health and female athletes. "When you went through what I went through, there's nothing to celebrate about that…I look back at all of it, there's nothing cool about it, I'm hurt from all of it. I have real trauma and pain inside of me from all of that.” Dejounte Murray In this powerful episode of The Pivot Podcast, NBA guard Dejounte Murray sits down with Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder for a raw, emotional, and reflective conversation on how as a young man he defied odds making it off the Seattle streets to becoming a basketball star to choosing an unlikely life path that forever changed him. Dejounte reveals what it was like growing up in a tough environment, detailing experiences with violence, homelessness, and parental incarceration as he shared how these hardships fueled his determination to succeed and provided the foundation for his resilience on and off the court. With pain and hurt in his voice, Dejounte find the words to share with the guys on the healing process of what he did in his early life, what he witnessed and how survivor's remorse eats at him, saying how everyone he knew from home is either in jail or deceased, and he starts most of his mornings by emailing his friends and relatives who are in prison. Overcoming the unimaginable as he explains how he went from catching a criminal case at 11 years old, to juvenile detention to playing one year of college basketball before being drafted in the first round by the San Antonio Spurs. Discussing his NBA journey and reflecting on lessons learned, Dejounte shares how instrumental his time was with the Spurs, specifically Coach Popovich, who was more than a coach and served as his first real father-figure guiding him through the ups and downs of life. He talked about the pressure of being a young player in a storied franchise, the complexities of team dynamics, transitioning to the Atlanta Hawks, dealing with injuries, setbacks and now trying to navigate life and basketball playing with the New Orleans Pelicans, his latest NBA home. Ryan gets into the growth and maturity sides of life, as Dejounte is unique in he doesn't drink, do drugs, party and very rarely seen outside in a public setting. Committed to his family, being a father and the game he loves so much, Dejounte isn't willing to risk any outside factor messing up this gift of life outside what he used to know and doesn't want anything to interfere with his healing. A heart-wrenching conversation at times, but one definitely worth listening to as Dejounte's courage to open up on overcoming life-changing obstacles, and the pivotal moments that shaped his path to success, will impact you in ways you never thought possible. Opal Lee is now affectionately known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth. She led the campaign for the 19th June, the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas were finally told that they were free, to be declared a national holiday. As President Biden signed the bill into law, Opal stood beside him. She had very personal reasons for wanting all Americans to think about freedom and the damage that racism can do.In 1939 on the 19th of June, just days after she and her family had moved into a predominantly white neighbourhood in Fort Worth, Texas, their house was destroyed by a white mob. Opal was just 12. The family never spoke about the event again.Opal went on to work as a teacher and counsellor in school, and then set up a food bank and later a farm to help those struggling to feed their families. She also organised local events to mark Juneteenth in Texas. In 2016, when she was 89, Opal came up with the idea to walk to Washington to ask the President to declare the day a national holiday. The campaign, and their petition, grew slowly at first and then a seismic event, the murder of George Floyd by a police officer, galvanised people and created a new sense of urgency to bring about change. Now armed with a petition complete with 1.5 million signatures, Opal's campaign was successful.Opal Lee is now 98, she's been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and she's been given the Presidential Medal of Freedom – the nation's highest civilian honour.Archive used from CBS NewsPresenter: Jo Fidgen Producer: Andrea Kennedy and June ChristieGet in touch: liveslessordinary@bbc.co.uk or WhatsApp: 0044 330 678 2784
Sunday Morning Message - "Battling Idolatry: Lessons from the Golden Calf"In this Father's Day message from June 15, Pastor Kyle reflects on Exodus 32, focusing on the episode of the golden calf. He emphasizes the critical role fathers play, likening it to leadership, where rejecting passivity and leading courageously aligns with God's call. Pastor Kyle discusses the Israelites' impatience that led to idolatry, comparing it to modern forms of idolatry that divert worship from God to other aspects of life. He highlights the consequences of idol worship, the importance of prayer in seeking God's mercy, and the necessity of actively dismantling idols in one's life. The narrative showcases Moses' righteous indignation and intercession for the people, contrasting with Aaron's passivity, and ends with a call for repentance and restoration.Key Takeaways:We are all vulnerable to idolatry, especially during slow seasons or times of waiting.Idolatry often leads to further immorality and sin.Prayer is a powerful tool for intercession and experiencing God's mercy. There is an ongoing war for our worship. The only right response to idols is destruction and repentance.Discussion Questions:The sermon states, "WE'RE ALL ONE SLOW SEASON AWAY FROM MAKING A BUNCH OF BAD DECISIONS." Can you relate to this? Share a time when you were tempted to make poor choices during a period of waiting or uncertainty. How would you define idolatry in today's context? What are some common idols people struggle with in our culture? The pastor quotes Tim Keller: "An idol is anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything you seek to give you what only God can give." Reflect on this. Are there any areas in your life where something may be competing with God for your devotion?"IDOLATRY ANYWHERE OPENS THE DOOR TO IMMORALITY EVERYWHERE." How have you seen this play out in your own life or in society? How does Moses' intercessory prayer for the Israelites inspire you? In what ways can we cultivate a more passionate prayer life for others? The message emphasizes that "THERE HAS ALWAYS BEEN AND WILL ALWAYS BE A WAR FOR OUR WORSHIP!" How can we be more intentional about directing our worship towards God in our daily lives?Practical Applications:Take time this week to prayerfully examine your heart for any potential idols. Use the "REPENT/REMOVE/RESTORE" approach mentioned in the sermon to address any issues you identify.Choose one person or situation to intercede for in prayer this week, following Moses' example of passionate intercession.Identify one area of your life where you can be more intentional about worshipping God (e.g., in your work, relationships, or leisure time). For men: Reflect on the call to "REJECT PASSIVITY AND LEAD COURAGEOUSLY." What's one way you can step up and lead with courage in your family, workplace, or community this week?

Send us a textEver wonder what goes through an elite athlete's mind when injury threatens to derail everything they've trained for? In this captivating conversation with mountain running legend Allie Mack, we discover how the most challenging moments often lead to unexpected triumphs.Fresh off qualifying for her eighth USA Mountain Running Team at the Sunapee Scramble, Allie reveals she almost didn't make it to the starting line. Battling hip pain that left her in tears the night before, she made a last-minute decision to race - then proceeded to lead almost wire-to-wire on a brutally technical course featuring thigh-high water crossings, slick mud, and massive rocks. What's remarkable isn't just the physical performance but the mental approach that made it possible. Rather than pressuring herself, Allie reframed the race as "just a nine-mile run" - her favorite distance on any given day. This shift in perspective allowed her to find joy in the moment and perform with rare freedom. At 34, Allie dismisses any notion that she's past her prime. "I think I'm as fast as I was in 2014," she reflects, "but now with added knowledge and strength." Drawing inspiration from veterans like Joe Gray and Max King, she's convinced her best performances may still lie ahead as she targets the vertical team qualification at Broken Arrow. The conversation turns to what might be America's strongest-ever women's mountain running squad, with Allie eager to build deeper team bonds before Worlds. Her insights on balancing individual competition with national pride offer a fascinating glimpse into elite sports psychology.Ready to be inspired by an athlete who continues to redefine what's possible?
