A mother in Hiroshima reported that her 21-year-old autistic son was mistakenly accused of groping on a bus after failing to respond to a woman's request to move, highlighting how individuals with developmental disabilities are often misjudged due to difficulties with communication and social cues; although the police confirmed no wrongdoing through surveillance footage, the emotional impact remains, prompting calls for greater public awareness and understanding—especially through visible aids like the “Help Mark”—to prevent such distressing incidents. Tonight's special guests are Dale & Faith Ingraham, a husband and wife from upstate New York who are returning NAASCA family members. Dale and Faith are co-founders of Speaking Truth in Love ministries, a ministry that addresses domestic violence and sexual abuse especially within the Christian community. Faith Ingraham is a survivor of domestic violence and sexual abuse, raped and molested for years by her father who was an Independent Baptist Pastor at the time. The sixth of nine children and only daughter, she accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior when she was five years old. She graduated from Corning Community College and Practical Bible Training School, has written articles on abuse and is a conference speaker. Dale Ingraham graduated from Practical Bible Training School and has been serving God in the pastoral ministry since 1983. He's very concerned at the apathy in the Church over this issue. He is currently pastoring the Curtis Baptist Bible Church in Campbell, NY. He has written several articles for publication and is the author of “Tear Down This Wall Of Silence: Sexual Abuse in the Church an introduction for those who will hear," which provides guidance in how we should respond to abuse. Dale is also a Board Member at MKSafetyNet USA. Faith and Dale travel and speak about the issue of abuse and the need to deal with it before it devastates another generation.

Tonight's special guest is Elizabeth Sullivan from Stillwater, Minnesota, an adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse who started a peer support group in her home town. She hopes to make it into a non profit, and says, "I am hoping to get more into advocating." Check out her web site at: www.EmpowerSurvivors.net. "In 2013 at the age of 42 I broke my silence," Elizabeth says. "Kind of a forced breaking of silence because it came out due to several triggers that ended up putting me in ICU for two days with a heart rate that couldn't be regulated, chest pain and dry heaves. After that two day event the flashbacks started in, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, hyper vigilance and all of the rest." Her PTSD basically out of control. "This begun the breaking of silence for me, the two day a week therapy sessions, group therapy and a lot of ups and downs and suicidal thoughts. It's been a hard process but I feel I've come a long way since all this came to a head several years ago." She knows her recovery will be a journey. "There's still healing to be had but I am healing, finding balance and becoming what I think is a better person - me. Me instead of what I felt I had to be for everyone else." Elizabeth goes on, "I have more growth ahead of me but my days are no longer filled with flashbacks after flashbacks. I haven't had to sit on a bathroom floor for a long time due to having a panic attack and I can sleep better. I still have work to do but I now see growth. Breaking my silence was the best thing I ever did, and the hardest thing I ever did, and now I want to empower other survivors to do the same and find healing."

SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "Child Abuse, Trauma and 12-Step Recovery" - STEP 5 (and we'll include a bit about TRADITION 5) - SCAN host Bill Murray will be joined by special guest co-host Rivka Edery, MSW, LCSW, author of the book “Trauma and Transformation: A 12-Step Guide." Bill founded the recently launched Adult Survivors of Child Abuse Anonymous (ASCAA). Together they will lead tonight's discussion on STEP 5: "Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs." At first glance, you may feel absolutely resistant when you look at this step.  How can I let someone find out about me? You may feel fear, dread, anticipation of rejection and humiliation if anyone knows of your past or “secrets”. Perhaps you may feel knots and tangles in your body with no vision or understanding as to how to “untangle” those knots. “Fearlessly” writing an inventory takes enough energy, and trips your trigger wires badly enough – now you have to actually share this with someone. ~~ A child abuse survivor herself, Rivka Edery is grateful for the spiritual recovery she found in the 12 Steps of AA. She's been active in the 12 Step community for over 17 years. Bill Murray credits his 30 plus years of recovery to the spiritual power of the 12 Step program, too. ~~ Join us every two weeks to further examine a 12 Step approach to recovery from abuse. Next show we'll address STEP 6 & TRADITION 6. ~~ Please see our web page at: www.NAASCA.org/Trauma-12Step or write to Rivka at: rebecca.edery@gmail.com

Tonight's special guest is Scott Cronan from Los Angeles, a child abuse survivor and film Director. "I am currently working on my first feature film that centers around an adult victim of child abuse," Scott writes, "and the struggles she experiences in her life due to the traumas in her childhood. I am using my background with abuse and knowledge of film to create an experience that will help shape the conversation around child abuse in this country. And perhaps the world." As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse Scott struggled in his youth to find a path in life, always doubting himself and feeling as though he was never good enough. "When I was a little boy the father of a neighbor friend of mine would have us undress and touch each other," he explains, "which started a string of acting out and inappropriate sexual behavior towards others around me at a very young age. I was often struggling." Scott goes on, "It wasn't until my mid twenties when I found my path in the film industry that I was able to begin some value for myself and the things I had to say and create in the world." Over the next 13 years he worked hard and learned all that he could about film production working his way up to video editor for major companies like Apple, AOL, Coca-Cola, LA Times etc and finally settling into Cinematographer and Director. He's done well. "I recently completed my first short art film, 'Forgiveness is a Weapon,' and won the award for Best Short Film in London in February 2015."

Tonight's special guest is Michael Broussard from Philadelphia, a returning NAASCA family member. As a child abuse survivor, Michael has come up with a unique way to be of service and carry our message. NAASCA has committed to presenting his play, a one-man show "Ask a Sex Abuse Survivor," to a wider and ever-expanding audience through our web site and on our talk shows. The East Coast leg of the National Tour begins in early September and currently includes stops in Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Vermont... with more stops being added every day. "Once we finish the East Coast leg, I'll come home to refresh and regroup, then I'll head out to do either the Midwest or West Coast leg of the tour," says Michael. "Eventually we will cover the entire nation." He goes on, "We are relying on donations to help us reach as many survivors as possible all around the country." To make a donation in support of the tour click the "donate" link." During the play, which was first performed at the end of June, 2014, Michael tells the story of a childhood lost to abuse — and rediscovered decades later. Throughout the performance, audience members were encouraged to share their own experiences, ask questions and offer up comments. The play provides a unique opportunity for an open, interactive dialogue on the effects and causes of abuse and, as such, NAASCA will be devoted to helping the play be presented elsewhere. We'll sponsor these events and list them on the NAASCA web site when they are scheduled, etc, too, as an ongoing project / service. We're delighted to count Michael among our NAASCA family members.

The neglect she experienced is a large part of the reason she's lived most of her life in full leg braces .. from being thrown out a second story window when she was 4 yrs old. She says, "From the abuse I died 3 times. Heaven is wonderful, but God wasn't ready for me. The second trip took me 4 years to recover from. I have anoxia, brain damage due to lack of oxygen. That effects my memory. I got to the point of realizing I couldn't recover relearn everything." But Laurie's resilient, if nothing else. "I was with the Guardians Of the Children for 4 years, until they shut our chapter down. Crushed, but that didn't stop me from spreading awareness of child abuse through my story." She goes on, "I am passionate about this cause," adding, "In my photos on Facebook you will find picture after picture of the extent I go to for the kids." In addition there are 4 or 5 videos on her timeline. "If you watch one, or all of them, you will find out who I am," she points out. "I'm a warrior who will fight this battle to the end for the kids of today. My message: You can survive...and those of us who did owe it to our kids to save them from what we went through."

SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "For Our Kids" - Deborah Maddison and Tracy Baxter, Canadian activists from British Columbia, will join Bill Murray to lead this evening's discussion about the Rights of Children and Families in North America. The institution commonly known as "Child Protective Services" has operated in an almost untouchable position in North America for decades, as if it was "above the law". To speak out against CPS was to risk losing your children, your family, your career, and in some cases your freedom, as retaliation was quick and vicious. Thankfully, there has been a recent turn in public opinion due to media exposure, precedent-setting lawsuits, ground breaking documentaries and people refusing to be silenced. Slowly, the Courts are starting to hold CPS agencies responsible for their illegal actions and abuses." We'll speak to the producer and director of 'Hope Stripped Bare', Tom Sutherland and cameraman Linley Redford, whose documentary is about the CPS system in North America. We will also be speaking with attorney and advocate Nanine McCool, executive director of Bridge to Justice Foundation, who fought to expose injustice in Family Court. We'll also have a former CPS worker who is willing to speak out about just how deep and how prevalent the corruption of these agencies is. ~~ Every two weeks a new THEME will be presented in this series, with frequent special guests speaking from their own experience. ~~ Please see our web page at: www.NAASCA.org/ForOurKids or write to: naasca.forourkids@gmail.com

Tonight's special guest is Donna (Dee) Wood from West Virginia, a verbal abuse survivor (as both a child and adult) who says she would be honored to tell her story in the hope she could help others. The devastating effects of the abuse lasted for over forty years, through most of her life. The trauma she endured through her mother's husband brought a partial amnesia. She writes, "I lived on a small farm in a remote part of southern West Virginia. I was a very introverted child, extremely fearful of strangers." Her mother's husband, who she and her brother always called by his first name, Quentin (never Daddy or Dad), had an intense dislike of people. She goes on, "He never talked to us, unless it was to criticize, intimidate or inflict some form of verbal abuse." He sometimes administered severe belt beatings, beyond the necessary punishable offence, if it indeed was an offense. Her childhood trauma led to a difficult life. But Dee's on a better path now. "If I had known that the problems in my life were due to a term referred to as child abuse earlier in my life," she says, "and if I'd received the appropriate counseling and therapy, then my life would have been much easier and better. Yet, I believe if I had not gone through the trauma of those years I would not be the person I am today." Now she's a person who is more accepting, compassionate and understanding of others who have suffered and still suffer from different types of abuse. "I thank the Lord Almighty for answering my prayers to be whole," Dee writes. "I am still recovering, but I feel a lot more whole today."

Tonight's special guest is Alicia Kozakiewicz, from Pittsburgh, PA, a returning NAASCA family member. Alicia was kidnapped in 2002 by a man she'd met on the Internet, taken to Virginia, tortured for four days and rescued by the FBI. She was 13 years old. Since then, Alicia and her family work towards preventative safety education and effective legislation so that no child will suffer as Alicia has. That's the mission of "The Alicia Project," the implementation of ALICIA'S LAW in all 50 states, to provide the funding to rescue all children from the hands of sadistic sexually exploiting Internet predators and to raise awareness and end predatory crimes against children. “The Alicia Project,” though rooted in tragedy, has become a voice for exploited and missing children. Along with her parents, Mary and Charles, she has educated children, families, teachers, law enforcement and governmental and social agencies, and has been honored to address numerous conferences, forums and summits, lending her personal and unique insight of the subject. She has participated in a number of Internet Safety films and projects, and has made multiple appearances on radio and TV. Recognizing the need for effective Internet Safety legislation, Alicia testified before Congress, and has lobbied successfully for the Protect Our Children Act of 2008 and ALICIA'S LAW, a state-by-state version of the legislation.

"For the next several years, from 2000 to 2008, I would be in and out of therapy and struggle with anger, depression, and thoughts of suicide." "I finally made up my mind to end my life," he writes. "I decided that I had had enough." But then he had a moment of reflection. A friend's funeral had came to mind. He's in a much better place now. "Presently, I am interning at an organization that works to find housing for local veterans who are in a state of homelessness. I love it." He's making amazing progress. Tonight's special guest is Charlie Tinsley from Harrisonburg, Virginia, a child abuse survivor and Seminary student heading into ministry. Charlie's parents divorced when he was 2 years old. "I was taken in by my father and stepmother as my mother was deemed unfit to be a parent. What happened for the next 17 years of my life was quite traumatic. My father and stepmother had three other children which my stepmother always used to remind me that I was not her child and I was the child of a deadbeat." He did poorly in high school but escaped the family when he unsuccessfully tried to join the military. Migraines were his downfall. Things began to turn around when he got a BS in Religion, graduating Summa Cum Laude. "I am a Seminary student at Eastern Mennonite Seminary studying for a Masters in Divinity and on track to become a Licensed United Methodist preacher. I am married to a woman whose family took me in when I left my home and have been married for several years following many years of dating." He writes a BLOG on Theology, Book and Bible Reviews, and Bible Study. "Now, I am a survivor," he says. "That means I made it out of a hostile and abusive environment and have a story and experience to share so I can help others. Being a male makes this even more important, because men are reluctant to share their experiences with abuse, inadequacy, depression, and suicide."

Tonight's special guest is Dolores (Dee) Miller from Philadelphia, PA, an abuse survivor, activist and poet. Since dealing with her past pain, Dolores says she has become more spiritual. Now she must be ready to help others who need guidance and a sensitive person to listen to their expressions of distress. Dolores was in her 30s when she began having nightmares and visions of sexual abuse. She realized these came from her childhood and that she had somehow been able to suppress the memory of her experience until then. The images of abuse explained a lot. Dolores was adopted away from her parents by her uncle and aunt at a young age. “They raised me. They rescued me,” she says. “It took me years to realize from what they rescued me. My birth home was dysfunctional.” Dolores says she began writing because she was going through a healing process. “I became in touch with my creativity,” she says. “I found I had plenty to say, and the best way to express my feelings was to write them down. They took the form of poetry.” Her healing process not only started Dolores writing, but it increased her spirituality. She says faith helped her immensely in getting past memories that were sometimes paralyzing. Dolores is in her second year of study with the American Institute of Theology and Philosophy. Now she puts her anger to positive use by supporting Child Advocates and making sure lawyers act on children's behalf and that children get the counseling they need. "I can also be positive by showing how I thrive as a survivor," she says, "by talking about strength and determination, about fighting and acknowledging, and about developing the courage of a warrior."

Tonight's special guest is Mike H from Alabama, a child abuse survivor who's making his first "special guest" appearance with us. Mike's a fan of the "Stop Child Abuse Now" show and tells us it's helped him a great deal to listen and learn from our previous episodes. Now he joins us, hoping he can help others. This is the first time he will be telling his story. Mike's abuse began when he was a very young child. He played the "scapegoat" role in his family, and the experience extended all the way into his 30s. There were many struggles along the way. "I would run away and end up in foster care," he writes. But each time he did he'd eventually end up back home where he'd get even more abuse. Mike is in the process of writing his story in the form of an autobiographical book, which he shares has helped him in coming to understand himself. He hopes publishing it might help other adult victims / survivors of child abuse find recovery. Mike's upbeat and optimistic about continuing his own journey, but also approaches healing with his eyes open. He knows it'll not be easy. Mike credits his wonderful wife with being his rock, and his children for being his inspiration.

Michael is a nationally known award-winning advocate survivor addressing the issues of trauma, abuse and mental health concerns through public speaking and his music. Tonight, among other topics, we'll discuss his perspective on suicide, which were expressed in a recent "Live Through This" written interview. "Live Through This" is a collection of portraits and stories of suicide attempt survivors, as told by those survivors. "Suicide has been around me all my life," says Michael. His mother attempted suicide he explains, "but there was no talking about it. It was just .. something was awry." He goes on, "I've lost two brothers to suicide, okay? And two friends." He points out, "I'm the oldest of five siblings. Every one of us has had [issues], and it's got nothing to do with being mentally ill. It's got to do with the trauma and the abuse that we experienced as kids, because it was pretty horrific. It broke you spiritually. My parents were evil and dark in what they did, 'cause they wanted to crush your spirits." Michael is an oft sought after speaker on the sexual exploitation and trafficking of children and adults and he has appeared as a guest on many TV, radio and Internet shows. His non-profit "The Surviving Spirit" offers Hope, Healing and Help for those impacted by trauma, abuse and mental health challenges through the creative arts, advocacy, education, a monthly newsletter and web site.

Bill founded the recently launched Adult Survivors of Child Abuse Anonymous (ASCAA). Together they will lead tonight's discussion on STEP 4: "Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves." Most survivors, unless they are in a crisis, do not put much thought into what happened; the people, places, things, and reactions to events that have long-shaped their life. But if you have not yet taken a look at what traumata shaped your personality, behaviors, fears, and ways of responding in life, Step Four is a good opportunity to stop and think about it. Perhaps you have reached the day when you realize that you are not living your life as you really want to. Perhaps you feel a deep inner longing for healthy, secure attachment, love and a more kind relationship with yourself. ~~ A child abuse survivor herself, Rivka Edery is grateful for the spiritual recovery she found in the 12 Steps of AA. She's been active in the 12 Step community for over 17 years. He's the author of "Snakes in My Dreams: A Mental Health Therapist's Odyssey from Hardship to Healer," and is here to talk about his work, including the use of Eye Movement Integration (EMI) therapy. Mike was raised by a father who was a violent alcoholic, so Mike was "the good boy" who did well in school until, he says, "I got to college and started drinking every day." He did well enough to earn a MA and then a PhD degree in special education. "Although I always knew I was attracted to my own sex," he writes, "I married and raised two children." He explains, "Throughout my adult life, I was depressed and battled anxiety in the form of a social phobia that caused me to be fearful of throwing up in situations where I felt on display." He quit drinking at 45,after coming out of the closet. Eventually he recalled in bits and pieces how he was sexually molested by his father on several occasions during childhood. "Fragments of memories I had always recalled were coupled with the reality of what happened to me through dreams, waking realizations and the assistance of a great therapist." He goes on, "I finally understood why my life was so arduous, and why I chose to dull my senses with alcohol for 27 years. In spite of all my accomplishments, I felt like a fraud whose deceit would be discovered at any time." At the age of 50 he left his position at the university and became a counselor in private practice, a specialist in the treatment of trauma and PTSD.

SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "For Our Kids" - Deborah Maddison and Tracy Baxter, Canadian activists from British Columbia, will join Bill Murray to lead this evening's discussion about the Rights of Children and Families in North America. Tonight we are doing a very special edition of the "For Our Kids" talk show! We have received countless emails and phone calls from people over the last year about issues with the Family Court system and CPS, and the arrogant, contemptuous ways in which these people were treated. We know many people going through these systems feel like victims, and often feel hopeless and helpless. Tonight we're looking at things in a whole different light. Humor is both healthy and empowering, especially dark humor as we can all truly relate to that. Although there's nothing funny about having to go through this, tonight we're playing Devil's Advocate and giving people a chance to laugh at the perpetrators and the ridiculous ways in which they 'handle' things and then try to justify them. Using their own words, and their own actions, we expose them for what they really are - outrageous and absurd. Join us tonight as we rip the masks off their smug superiority and get a laugh at THEIR expense. We didn't have to make it up, they really wrote it for us! ~~ Every two weeks a new THEME will be presented in this series, with frequent special guests speaking from their own experience. ~~ Please see our web page at: www.NAASCA.org/ForOurKids or write to: naasca.forourkids@gmail.com

Among other things, she's been involved in "Million March Against Child Abuse," a Nationwide effort to bring voices together in making an impact, being a voice for our children. Penny explains, "My memories go back as far as probably before I was 2, being picked up and thrown into canning jars. I have enough scars on my head and you could draw a road map across country on my scalp." She goes on, "My mother was the abuser. Everyone knew, but no one stood up. Years of her abuse had taken a toll on not only my body but my mind." For a number of years, Penny had been what she calls "a keyboard advocate" sharing very little of herself and hiding behind a computer screen. Recovering from a stroke and news of a brain tumor got her into action. "I knew I had to do something, and determined I was going to become an advocate that was no longer going to hide behind my screen. In September of 2013, I contacted "Million March Against Child Abuse" and became a Lead Coordinator for St. Croix Falls WI, and held my first Walk against Child Abuse April 5th 2014." She concludes, "I'm ready to tell my story. Yesterday I lived in shame of my scars. Today I soar past them to tell other peoples stories, to be a voice. I thank you for this opportunity, and I only pray that when I have the opportunity to tell MY story it will help others come forwards and erase the stigma of shame and we can continue to grow for our future generation."

My first memory of it was at five years old. I turned him in at 11 years old. I've been in counseling on and off and had a brief stay in Four Winds. I am currently in school for criminal justice, working from home for a family law attorney, caring for my two boys, and working on this book. The goal of the book is to wake a lot of people up to the fact that very little is being done to protect children from abuse. I have been in and out of family court fighting for custody of my six year old." Because of her experience she has a mission, "My goal is to write a book that will make people aware of what children go through. People don't seem to realize how little is actually done when abuse is reported. I was abused for 9 years of my childhood. Child protective services expects to be able to tell in one visit whether or not a child is in a safe home. They were in my home multiple times and left me with a monster. Currently I am locating other survivors to interview about their experiences and their thoughts and feelings as they went through them." She goes on, ""I can't change the world if no one reads the book but I truly want to do this right and reach as many people as possible." Her book "Dying To Live" explains how childhood maltreatment can lead to adult physical illness. As a youngster Amy was subjected to emotional abuse and neglect. A very nervous child, she was quite often sick, and missed a lot of grade school. Amy became very ill at age 20 with mononucleosis and decided then and there that she was not going to let the first 18 years of her life dictate the rest of it. She writes, "I pushed everything inside. But at at age 36, she continues, "I couldn't hide from my past anymore .. I literally had to die to live" (see book). Amy explains, "While writing my book, I learned of The ACE Study (Adverse Childhood Experiences Study) and took the ACE survey. With a high score of 8, I am convinced that my early childhood traumas caused my adult physical illness." Today, after the suicide of her brother eight months ago, she is feeling the effects of PTSD once again. She goes on, "The early childhood abuse simply does not prepare one for the challenges of life." Amy has recently been trained as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and, in fact, adopted one foster child in 2000. She says, "It is my hope that I can help educate physicians to include The ACE survey questions in their patient intake questionnaires and, as a CASA, to help interrupt a pattern that may lead to illness later in life." Tonight's special guest is Kathy Jones from Sacramento, California a child abuse survivor who was in the foster care system who's author of the book, “Foster Cat, Foster Kid, God Says You Don't Have to Eat Dirt Anymore!" Her dedication to God, love for those that have been impacted by foster care and her passion for animals shines through in her writings and her daily life. Some examples of her altruism include writing a piece as a teenager in 1972, "For God So Loved the World,” which after being published in 1994 has been played “royaltyfree” all over the world, to spread God's Word. She's mentoring current and former foster youth, researching resources that provide support to the foster youth community and actively participates in petitions supporting important social causes. Kathy's a legislative advocate for animals and wildlife. She's also a member of Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church in Fair Oaks, California. As Kathy began writing “Foster Cat, Foster Kid” her original intention was to feature a special cat, named “Good Boy.” However, as she wrote more, she felt a close connection between her neglectful childhood and the plight of “Good Boy,” who had been left in an abandoned lumber yard. Both she and the cat had been neglected by those that were supposed to nurture them, yet they had a strength that could overcome obstacles that most could not. The book is a heartwarming expression of God's mercy, the therapeutic love of animals, and the strength that exists in young adults that have had to overcome numerous obstacles that were placed in front of them by foster care.
