Years before the levees failed, New Orleans' public schools were already in crisis. The corruption was so entrenched that the FBI even set up shop inside the district. The first episode of Where the Schools Went uncovers how decades of mismanagement and neglect turned New Orleans into a cautionary tale long before Hurricane Katrina ever made landfall, and how it set the stage for what would come after. We also follow a group of educators who fled to Houston in the aftermath of the storm and built a school for displaced students. And then we follow them – and their students – back to a city and school system struggling to rebuild. For more episodes of 'Where The Schools Went,' listen here or anywhere you find podcasts. What do you do when your bike gets swept down a flooded Scottish river, you're soaked to the bone, and miles from the nearest village? Well... you'll have to listen to find out! Kerry is a blazing-fast Scottish ultra racer with deep roots in mountain biking. After racing the Highland Trail 550 for the first time in 2024, finishing just under three hours off the women's record, she came back in 2025 with her eyes set on it. What followed was an absolutely nail-biting race between her and eventual women's winner Emma Bateup (our last guest), with both women pushing the pace through torrential rain, flash floods, and highland bog. In this conversation, Kerry breaks down what really happened out there: from stormy river crossings to the moment her bike got pulled away by the current, and the long, cold walk that followed. We talk about how she's built an off-road racing life while juggling three jobs, her past as an elite mountain biker and triathlete, and how she's navigating what it means to race fast, chase joy, and tell stories that bring others along for the ride.Topics include:Highland Trail 550Racing with joy vs. racing to win, and why it's not either/orFueling, body image, and strength in endurance sportSharing the dots and building community through storytellingWorking three jobs while riding at the top level of bikepackingGet your Detours stickersIf you're keen to give Albion cycling clothing a go, use DETOURS15 at checkout for 15% off your order.Follow Kerry's adventures on Instagram: @kerrymacphee Follow Mel on Instagram: @melwwebbFollow Detours on Instagram: @detourscyclingFollow Albion on Instagram: @albion.cyclingIf you love this show please consider pledging your support to sustain producing this show: https://buymeacoffee.com/detourspodcast

Bible Reading: Matthew 6:19-21Cecilia molded a huge sand castle on the beach, trying to make it like the castles she saw in movies. She made soaring towers and dug a deep moat all around it. Then she noticed that the ocean's waves were coming closer and closer. "Help, Dad! The water's going to wash away my castle!"Dad shook his head. "It's no use. The tide is coming in, and the waves will come a lot higher before they go back down."Cecilia didn't want to believe that. She dug a wide trench all around her castle and built a sand barrier to protect it. But water soon crashed over the barrier and filled the trench. The waves splashed against the castle, pulling it apart with watery fingers. "It took me a long time to build that," said Cecilia, "and now it's gone!" "Well, just be glad it's only sand," said her sister, Ember. "Sometimes people lose real houses in fires and storms, don't they, Dad?"Dad nodded. "When I was young, the house I lived in with my parents was badly damaged in a storm, and I lost a lot of my personal possessions. It was very hard, but it also helped me learn an important truth." "What truth?" asked Cecilia. "That all earthly possessions are a little like that sand castle," Dad said. "They won't last. I realized there's something much more important than earthly things, and anyone who has it will never lose it. Do you know what it is I'm talking about?""I know," said Ember. "It's Jesus, isn't it?""Yep!" Dad said. "He saves us and gives us eternal life, and that gift will last forever. Instead of focusing so much on earthly treasures, we should store up treasure in heaven.""How do we do that?" asked Ember."Well," said Dad, "the most important thing is to trust Jesus as our Savior--He's the only one who can save us and give us eternal life. Then, as He works in our hearts and teaches us to live as children of God, we'll start to care more about what He wants than what we or other people want. The things we do to serve Him--and the things we give up to do it--will build us treasure in heaven."–Daryl B. KnauerHow About You?Where are you storing your treasure--on earth or in heaven? It's easy to chase after all the things this world can offer you, but they don't last--you can't take them with you when you die. But Jesus offers us eternal life with Him, and that treasure lasts forever! Build true treasure by trusting in Him and sharing His love with others. When we stand barefoot with our feet in the water at the beach, we can notice how the waves are washing away the sand from under our feet. We don't stand on firm ground, the sand we stand on is constantly eroding, making our posture unstable, unreliable and impermanet. Ajahn Dhammasiha uses this experience as a simile for sankhārā ('conditioned phenomena'). Everything that is conditioned, that arises due to causes and conditions, will inevitably change and vanish when the conditions are exhausted. Just like standing on eroding sand, our illusion of Self is resting on sankhārā (form, feelings, perceptions, intentions, consciousness...). But this illusion is unstable, as the sankhārā it stands on are unstable themselves. If we see that clearly, we won't be able to by into the illusion anymore, and it collpses, feeing us to experience what is Not-Self, Not-Impermanent, Unconditioned, Nibbāna! Join me, Jason LaChance, host of the @KnockinDoorzDown podcast, certified addiction recovery coach, and mental health advocate for my sit down with Stephen Piazza @stephenpiazza4424 . Born in Northern California (San Jose), Stephen grew up in a strong Christian faith-based family. It was not uncommon for the Piazza family to be at church two and three times a week. In 1989, the Piazza family relocated to the Central Valley (Modesto). As a freshman, Stephen realized that music was becoming a passion in his life. In the late 90's Stephen joined a cover band called Second Avenue which played up and down the Central Valley for 2 years. In 2003, he joined a band called “Five Star Rising” which was signed to a management team, Chris Ricci Presents LLC, in late 2004. Local successes included: Winner of Battle of the Bands (opened for Spin Doctors) Opened for national acts who toured the Modesto area, such as Crossfade, Lit, Blue Oyster Cult, Vanilla Ice, Great White, Smile Empty Soul, The Calling, Third Eye Blind, and others. In 2009, Stephen was signed to an independent record label called “Big Time Records” with a band called “Dazeafter”. “Dazeafter” opened for other bands and had a hit remake of the song “Turn Up the Radio” which played for 3 months on rock stations throughout the nation. In 2014, Stephen produced a single called “Amanda's Web” as a solo artist under Steven Robb. “Amanda's Web” won a video and song contest for a magazine called Coast 2 Coast out of Miami, Florida. Stephen had fallen away from his roots as a Christian throughout the years. However, on June 12, 2020, Stephen had a near-death experience that changed his life. He had an encounter with Jesus in a hotel room in Reno and rededicated his life to God. He is now a Christian recording artist, singing for the One who gave him a second chance. His songs like “Washed Away” and “Set Free” share his story with the world of what JESUS did in his life and pray that the lyrics will point those who are battling with addiction or bondage to the One who can truly set them free. The message of his songs is meant to assure those who are seeking deliverance, that they are not ALONE! There is a God that will walk closer than a brother and carry them through their darkest days Stephen and I discuss the following and more. Intro 0:00 What was Stephen's upbringing and how did his path to substance abuse begin? 4:50 I lived the Rock N Roll Life. I could have joined the 27 Club with Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin & Kurt Cobain 11:10 What does Stephen see, when driving people to the methadone clinic? 26:46 Stephen respects that so many rockstars got sober and shared their journey 35:00 How did Stephen's faith lead him back to music & becoming a Christian artist? 44:00 This is Stephen Piazza Knockin' Doorz Down. Around the world, coastlines are constantly changing due to the power of waves, currents and tides. Coastal areas are also some of the most heavily populated and developed land areas in the world. So it's not hard to see how the natural process of coastal erosion can cause serious problems for us. It's an issue that's been bothering CrowdScience listener Anne in Miami Beach, Florida. She can see the beach from her window and wonders why after every storm, several trucks arrive to dump more sand on it. In this first of two programmes, CrowdScience visits Anne's home in south Florida and finds out how erosion threatens Florida's famous beaches. She speaks to geoscientist Dr Tiffany Roberts Briggs and hears why it's such a problem for this tourist-reliant state. Tiffany explains the delicate balance between natural processes and human infrastructure. Meanwhile, the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico declared a state of emergency in April 2023 due to coastal erosion. Caroline witnesses the impacts of erosion first-hand, as Ruperto Chaparro shows her abandoned houses crumbling into the sea. But how can we quantify the rate of erosion? Dr Kevian Perez in the Graduate School of Planning at University of Puerto Rico explains the methods they use to monitor Puerto Rico's coastlines, and how they are evaluating the effectiveness of different mitigation methods. However, some of the methods used to protect coastal communities from the encroaching sea have done more harm than good. So what are the best ways to tackle this problem? That's what we'll be exploring in next week's programme. Today's episode is about the disappearance of Sofia Juarez the day before her 5th birthday and the TikTok video 18 years later that reignited the search for her. This narrative-style story will slightly differ from Immigrantly's usual content, but it's for a good reason. Sofia Juarez's case is related to "Missing White Girl Syndrome,"—a term used to describe the overrepresentation of missing white women and girls in the media. Join me in this episode as I unravel Sofia Juarez's story, and then tune in next week to hear how Missing White Girl Syndrome can harm the well-being of thousands just like Sofia. If you want to know more about Sofia Juarez's Case, you can listen to the episode of the Washed Away podcast here.
