Right when women feel like they have it all figured out, many of them enter a stage of life in our society where they feel dismissed, ignored and cast out. The pressure is strong to try and hold onto youth as long as possible via whatever means necessary, and shame tends to accompany all of the available options. How can we learn to embrace the inevitability of aging a little more, and push society to come along with us? Former models Paulina Porizkova, Yasmin Warsame, and Christie Brinkley are publicly changing the conversation about what it means to be a woman in her 50s and 60s, and raising questions about beauty standards, norms, and media representation. Editor-in-chief of Allure magazine, Jessica Cruel, moderates the lively on-stage conversation and poses provocative questions about how we see ourselves and each other.

What if we could bring our face or body closer to “beautiful”—closer to the movie star or supermodel ideal, or just bring them closer to “normal”—to be more accepted, less judged in our day-to-day lives? Would we do it—if we could afford it? In this Vital Signs episode, two leading cosmetic surgeons shed light on what unfolds when you visit their clinics, one in New York and the other in Seoul, South Korea. Along with Dr. Yager and Dr. Cha, I'm joined by clinical psychologist Dr. Russo for a candid and very personal look at whether we truly can become “more beautiful.” ⭕️Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV
This episode is going to be a timeline of the life, impact and death of Donyale Luna, the first black supermodel. We'll be touching on her life growing up in an abusive household in the 1940s, becoming a model during a time when racism was alive and well within the fashion industry and 1960s America as a whole, and we'll be looking at how her rise to the top led to an inevitable drug addiction and a lonely death at the age of 33. If you've been following my Tiktoks you'll know that I've been talking a lot about the concept of the supermodel lately and really trying to break down what makes a supermodel. Despite labelling the concept as a ‘90s phenomenon, I think there were early signs of this phenomenon, and that Donyale was actually the first black supermodel, particularly because of how she impacted the fashion industry as a whole. That's just one of the reasons I wanted to dedicate an episode to her; I feel like she's often a footnote in the history books and there are so many inaccuracies in much of the content that's created around her life. So, this is kind of my love letter to Donyale, an audio memorial that hopefully fills in any gaps for her fans and brings her to life for a whole new audience. This episode probably wouldn't have happened if it hadn't been for the work of journalist and author Ben Arogundade. His book: Beauty's Enigma; the story of Donyale Luna – The First Black Supermodel – was hard to track down but was one of the few solid accounts that I could rely on for real facts. I've left a link to it for you below if you're interested. I'd love to know what you think of this episode? Had you heard of Donyale before? Do you like these historical look backs at beauty? Let me know over @beautymepodcast on Instagram or Twitter and definitely look out for some Donyale-themed TikToks over at @charissekenion. I'll also be saving a Donyale highlight on my Instagram so you can see much more of her looks and style. I've also written about the research process for this episode at beautymenotes.substack.com. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, self-esteem is a confidence and satisfaction in oneself. It's a realistic respect or a favorable impression of oneself, a view of ones' accomplishments, capabilities, values and perceived success in the ability to live up to them. A healthy self-esteem reflects positively on our wellbeing. But, when we have low self-esteem, it can be destructive to our lives, our relationships, our health and wellbeing; it can be a painful existence. Sociologist Morris Rosenberg developed a self-esteem measure, (known by the acronym RSES) that's used widely in social science research. It uses a 0-30 scale where any score below 15 is indicative of problems with self-esteem. It's no secret that many of us suffer from low self-esteem. It's not only based on our own opinions and beliefs but can be an accumulation of our experiences and people who impact our lives, from our family to friends and professional relationships. Self-esteem can also suffer as we lose the roles we fulfilled throughout our lives, for example, when we leave our professions, our children leave our home, we lose a spouse, we lose a person we've been caring for, especially an older parent. Clarissa Burt understands the destructive impact poor self-esteem can have on well being. She embarked on a journey to examine the roots and devise an action plan so that anyone can rebuild their self-esteem in order to become the confident person they were meant to be. You deserve to Look good and Feel Good, Right Now!!. Whether or not you have a healthy self-esteem, I guarantee that merely listening to Clarissa Burt will have you experiencing an energy level that will have you feeling transformed.
Disclaimer: This is a long episode, but you don't have to listen all at once. We only record once a month, make it last. This episode starts out with Deuce reveling in the fact that on the Boomer Bunker podcast John admitted that Deuce was correct in his views about politics. John has seen the light! John was wrong once again when he mistakenly referred to Velma from Scooby-Doo as Thelma. But Hollywood must gay up everything they release lately and 82% of straight people are not interested in watching. This makes the LGBTQ+ community furious! Billy Eichner's movie “Bros” opening was lackluster and it was because heterosexual people won't come to see it due to homophobia. It's not enough to accept the LGBTQ+ community heterosexuals must celebrate it! Well, that's a hard no. Line up Super Models, Tom Brady seems to be back on the Market! Hurricane Ian tore through Flordia and the Mainstream Media is ignoring it because Governor Ron Desantis must be doing a good job why spotlight that? Article Links: Velma from Scooby Doo is a lesbian!!! Didn't we already know that? Yes, 'Bros' flopped at the box office. This week I'm taking it back, all the way back to a 2002 copy of British Vogue, to look at how we used to talk about beauty. I've always been a big magazine collector, especially when it comes to the international editions of Vogue, and lately I've been drawn to flicking through old issues for inspiration. What I found in this 2002 issue were adverts for Dior mascara (pre DiorShow) and Estee Lauder perfume; beauty reports and articles that looked back at the Past Masters of Makeup, as well as a piece written by Business of Fashion Editor at Large Tim Blanks, about the demise of the Supermodel. Listen in as I flick through the pages, from the front cover onwards, and reflect on how trends always seem to come back; even the current 'sad girl' downturned eye trend was around 20 years ago apparently. I'd love to know what you think so let me know if you enjoyed sitting down with me over a vintage copy of Vogue. You can DM me on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast and you can also find a special TikTok in this episode over at @charissekenion. I'm also going to share the images from the magazine on my Instagram Stories so be sure to head there and take a look! The movie me and all you listeners have been anxiously awaiting is FINALLY HERE! On this episode we are reviewing the most f***ing iconic film in the Disney Channel multiverse, The Lizzie Mcguire Movie! And of course we had to bring on equally iconic guests. So Jana has invited her fellow Hilary Duff obsessed pal Emily and lovely, fabulous, and ever witty return guest Britney to discuss this flawless film. On this episode we talk on and on about y2k fashion, how freaking insane it is that the kids in this movie got to go to Rome for their Middle School graduation, Gordo and Lizzie's adorable budding romance, Paolo's notoriously bad singing, the hilariously outspoken principal Miss Ungermeyer, outfit repeaters, and how flawless Hilary Duff looked in all those looks from the legendary fashion show scene. In the words of Rupaul (yes a cover of "Supermodel" is in this movie), You Better Work! Haven't gotten enough of Britney?? Listen to her Motocrossed episode! FYI: I'm 100% aware that the audio quality in this episode is crap and I truly apologize for it. This is what happens when you have one mic, three fairly loud theater kids, and lots of red wine. But regardless, this is a wonderful episode full of laughs, joy, and love for our true queen Hilary D. Subscribe & Follow~ Emily Insta Britney Insta DCOM Divas Jana Insta & Youtube
Whew! That title was a mouthful! This week's episode stemmed from a conversation we had about how what we all tend to look for in someone to date is really what makes dating itself so difficult! If we had a more realistic view of people, and who God created them to be, we might not be in this mess. So, this week we're taking a look at some of the things we should look for instead!

Episode 38. Could you imagine going out for dinner with friends, then waking up in a hospital room with your jaw crushed, ribs broken, and being told your career as a model/entertainer is over? That's what happened to my guest, Andy Hnilo. In what Andy refers to as his own biology experiment, he mixed together ingredients from around the world to create a truly one of a kind mask to heal his own face. And it worked. Combined with his morning tonic, which he also describes, he went from the hospital bed in March and was back for a photoshoot in June with a perfect face. But the best part about Andy? He's actually a great human—a really nice guy who loves his family and helping others when he can.Listen as Andy describes his story and evolution from entertainer to award-winning skincare entrepreneur. In this episode of Gritty Pretty Radio, Eleanor Pendleton (founder & editor-in-chief) and Rose Garnett (beauty editor) chat with the cover star of Gritty Pretty's September 2022 issue, home-grown Pakistani-Saudi Arabian-Lithuanian supermodel Shanina Shaik. Having found success on the world stage—gracing the Victoria's Secret runway and countless high-fashion campaigns—Shaik has been at the forefront of shifting the paradigm when it comes to lack of representation in the fashion and beauty industry. Today, she has a lot to look forward to: a new baby (due any day now!) and a beauty brand expected on shelves next year. While it's easy to imagine her life as idyllic, her success is not without its hurdles. Here, the 31-year-old model reveals how she was bullied as a girl because of her looks and mixed heritage, the challenges of working as a professional model before agents and designers embraced diversity and how she has built resilience over the years. If there is one thing we can takeaway from this interview with Shanina Shaik, it's how grounded and humble she remains. Bruce and @TheRealDrKev are joined by former horsewoman, supermodel, and racing driver Jodie Kidd…and can't believe their luck when they discover that she's also the proud landlady of an award-winning gastropub with its very own beer! In the process of trying to blag themselves a table, Kev and Bruce delve into precisely what it takes to strut one's stuff on Chanel's iconic catwalk and explore similarities in mindset between the world's top models and elite sportspeople. Most of us learn to walk at an early age – but are some of us just better at it than others? Is enhanced body awareness something that leading fashionistas, champion showjumpers, and Formula 1superstars have in common? And what about the dark side of modelling: depression, substance abuse, and eating disorders? As Kev tries to rope Bruce into the kooky chaos of the madcap Gumball Rally, and Jodie confesses an interest in flying, we discover that when it comes to the psychology of runways aviation and haute couture aren't quite as different as they seem. You can listen to and watch longer episodes of Psycho Schizo Espresso AD FREE if you become a Patreon at www.patreon.com/psychoschizoespressoTo access the YouTube version of this episode ofPsycho Schizo Espresso, please visit https://youtu.be/wA_guPNYGKkPlease make sure you like, subscribe, rate, review and comment wherever you get your Podcasts from. We could talk all day about the pressure of being discovered as a teenage model like Erin Heatherton, co-founder of Chicago-based studio Resistance Chicago, was. She was scouted on the street at 17 and would go on to walk in high fashion shows as well as Victoria's Secret Fashion shows. The pressure comes from being expected to stay that way - a teenage girl - for your foreseeable future.Erin recently wrote about it, and I'll quote her instead.“At the peak of my career, there was constant pressure to stay very thin. Even early on, maintaining industry standards was a full time job, but it was possible for my body type at the time. I took my fitness seriously and was motivated by the validation I received … As I got older, I continued to work hard, but the “fit” version of my body looked different. I built my career and my self image on positive feedback that came naturally when I was younger and the foundation crumbled when that feedback turned negative. Shoots and agency meetings that were once fun and rewarding felt depleting and incredibly taxing on my self esteem. I was training twice a day and religiously monitoring the quality of my diet, but my body would simply not return to its 18-year-old shape.”We gloss over this on this week's episode of #WeGotGoals, but before leaving New York City and moving back to Chicago, Erin started to hate fitness. It had become a thing she had to do to whip her body into the shape that was being demanded of her. It was not a thing she enjoyed anymore. So she spent a year not working out, not smoking and getting back in touch with herself. So when she went to her first Lagree class, it was - as she describes it - humbling. I would say that a humbling experience can knock you off your path, but for her, it was the beginning of a couple of special things: a new relationship with fitness that was healthier and a new relationship with her person. In the middle of her journey to rediscover fitness in a more joyful way, Erin also found Karol Kocemba, who would become her co-founder at Resistance and her fiancé.They dated, they Lagree'd, and he fell for the fitness modality too and started nudging her to making this passion a business.I've taken a couple of classes at resistance and the environment is comfortable, small and attentive. The focus is on form and Erin is a born instructor. On the episode, you'll hear her describe the nerves she felt before teaching, but I think she does all of the things that are very important for a good class. She makes you do hard things with a smile. She praises loudly, but corrects quietly. She greets new students at the door instead of waiting for them to wander in. She tells me on the episode that feels empowered now by serving people and making them feel good about their bodies and the strength they feel. Contrast that with making herself miserable to maintain an impossible standard that's sold as “beauty.”I'm excited for you to hear the story of Erin and Karol's studio and of finding each other. Janice Dickinson steps Behind The Rope. Let me repeat that. Janice Dickinson. Icon. Living Legend in the Flesh. The World's First Supermodel. The Simon Cowell of America's Next Top Model. Reality TV veteran from before reality TV was reality TV a la Oxygen's “The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency”. In true Janice fashion, she - DOES - NOT - HOLD - BACK! Of course, we begin with a chat about Janice's early career where we talk about her then Supermodel colleagues Cindy Crawford, Elle Macpherson, Linda Evangelista, Kate Moss and last, but certainly not least, Tyra Banks and the many men in her life for a moment, a moment plus, or what could have been a moment, Mick Jagger, Sylvester Stallone, Simon Le Bon. Speaking of Tyra Banks, Janice was front and center for the first many cycles of the juggernaut hit “America's Next Top Model” as the most outspoken judge. Notoriously anti-plus size model, Janice has never shied away from controversy or speaking her mind. Janice opens up about how she clashed with Tyra, discusses Tyra's notoriously bad on set behavior and is kind enough, we asked, ok begged, to reveal secrets from behind the scenes of filming. As often happens here Behind The Rope, all roads lead to Housewives or, in this case, Housewives offspring and Kardashians. Janice shares her opinions on the current modeling industry and models like Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Delilah Belle Hamlin, Bella Hadid, Amelia Gray Hamlin, Hailey Baldwin and Kaia Gerber - how do they compare to the Icons of yesteryear and have they earned, or instead bought, their way in with money and / or a famous last name. We also address the current “influencer”, for lack of a better word, culture and how anyone with abs and a great pair of t*ts can be insta-famous. While we had Janice, and lucky we are to have been graced by the presence of royalty, we had to ask about her current relationship with Tyra and if she feels differently all these years later. We also pay homage to all, and we mean all, those other Reality TV shows she has been a part of: Botched!, Celebrity Big Brother, I'm a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew and The Surreal Life. @janicedickinson @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: ALLBIRDS - www.allbirds.com (Get Running Today with the Tree Flyer or Any Other Allbirds Products) RADIX REMEDIES - www.radixremedies.com (15% off Plus Free Shipping On Orders Over $35.
