Creating characters, breathing life into their personalities and watching them develop and evolve is one of my favorite areas to work in. After that, and most importantly, when you can reach just one individual with your message that helps make a difference for them, then you know you made the right decision to do what you do.Shelley Larkin is the co-collaborator and writing partner with Michael John Sullivan, CEO of Magic Everywhere Inc. Joint projects include the targeted animation series, Nick Knitley and The SockKids, Dr. Neverme, and Dinomike. In addition to her writing contributions, Shelley is also involved in all aspects of Magic Everywhere Inc. business ventures, including character development, illustration collaboration, website design, marketing and promotions, and merchandising of books, videos and other products.Magic Everywhere Inc. recently launched a wonderful rhyming story, The Lizard Who Loves A Blizzard that tells of an adorable lizard from down under who dreams of snow on Christmas day. Larry is dying to take to the slopes while riding his snowboard. His dream comes true and he has the time of his life! Shelley is the lead writer on this wild ride. When Shelley's not writing, another of her passions is the Destination Imagination (DI) worldwide learning program for kids K-12, where she served as Director in the greater Sacramento area.Focused on creative problem-solving techniques, hundreds of thousands of children are served by the program each year, supported by thousands of volunteers. Michael and Shelley’s initial collaboration was co-authoring a children’s short story, “The SockKids Stand Up Against Bullying”, a nationally distributed book developed in concert with Destination Imagination. This story creates awareness of an important life lesson for children, and shows how The SockKids can deliver these messages through animation and books.www.magiceverywhereinc.comwww.magiceverywhereinc.comwww.facebook.com/magiceverywhereincorporatedPlease email us at HealthyLifestylewithLA@gmail.com and follow us on social media @healthylifestylewithLAOur Goal at Healthy Lifestyle is to inspire, educate and empower you to fulfilling a healthy, emotional, spiritual and physical life, so you can feel empowered to live the life you have always wanted and dreamed. We’re trying something new this week—reading one of our favorite training articles from the magazine. One reason we’re releasing this special edition podcast is that this is the first full week of the coronavirus pandemic taking full effect in the United States. Some of you are working from home for the first time. Others of you are still going to work but your schedule has been vastly changed. And others of you may not be able to work at all, which must be extremely stressful. As with just about everything else, our lives with horses have changed. Some of you may be able to spend more time at the barn with your horse, while others of you may be facing barn closures and having to spend time away from these wonderful animals who give us so much comfort. Whatever your situation, we hope that listening to some of our favorite stories that have run in the magazine over the years will help.In this episode, Practical Horseman Editor Sandra Oliynyk reads “Get ‘In the Zone’ for Better Jumping” by Shelley Campf. Sandy chose this article because reading it brought her back to a time in her riding when she was so happy. Shelley Campf was her trainer on the East Coast many years ago. When Shelley started teaching at the stable where Sandy rode, she was at a pretty low point in her riding. She really thought that she was not a good rider, largely because she was convinced that she could not see a distance to a fence or at least not for an entire course of fences. To make matters worse, Sandy felt like most everyone else could—that they were just naturally better. As a result, Sandy worked really hard right up to the base of the fences to see distances and get her horse to jump. Shelley helped her realize that, in fact, the opposite was true—that she had to do less, that she was not responsible for making my horse jump. Instead, she needed to allow him to jump. This story addresses this common training challenge—learning how to allow your horse to jump without interfering for smoother rounds. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

When Shelley first opened her bookstore and coffee bar in a small town east of Dallas, Shelley did not know the difference between an espresso and a cappuccino, but she really wanted to sell books! As Owner/Operator of the store, Shelley created all of the marketing and advertising collateral for the business, including quarterly newsletters, direct-mail marketing, and newspaper ads. After five years Shelley was forced to close the store in 2009, during the economic recession. Shelley then earned her M.Ed. at S.M.U. and taught ELA for six years to hundreds of students in grades 9-12 in Carrollton, Texas. Before owning the bookstore, Shelley had years of experience writing articles for the newsletters published by her church and its private school. More recently, since June (when Shelley resigned from teaching), Shelley has edited several books, articles, and documents for clients nationwide. For example, Shelley edited online articles for the support site of an IT SaS B2B company in her hometown of Dallas; Shelley edited a book of poems titled "Pet Loss Poems" by Wendy Van de Poll (which is now available on Amazon); and Shelley edited a children's book titled "Mousetree" by Michael Malone, who also illustrated the book. It is a quaint story for middle-school readers, with over 270 pages and 26 beautiful full-color illustrations. Shelley has authored a book on Fibonacci (to be released in December) and edited countless documents, including business correspondence and academic content such as essays, research papers, curriculum, lesson plans, and assessments. Finally, for three years Shelley has posted thousands of creative writing pieces (mostly poems and short stories) on her social media pages on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram at @shellennessee and on her freelance business webpage: RuthlessRedPen.com. Shelley’s “Why” is helping people get a job, keep a job, and do a job better. Her joy is in helping people get and keep their jobs because she has had many family members who could not get or keep their jobs, so they suffered depression, addictions, homelessness, and worse (e.g. her little sister, Lynn, hung herself five years ago). Shelley’s and Lynn’s little brother (who also suffered depression, addictions, and joblessness until passing away this January) are Shelley’s “Why.” So, when Shelley can help someone get a job, she is happy. The best way Shelley can help others is by correcting the grammar errors in their communications, such as applications, resumes and cover letters, etc. To learn more about Shelley, please visit RuthlessRedPen.com. I first met Shelley Zalis when I was working for Unilever and she was invited to speak at an offsite meeting.  She broke two rules during her presentation; 1.  She divulged her age and 2. She quoted Yoda.  Most women don’t do those kinds of things; then again, most women aren’t Shelley Zalis. I was excited to catch up with Shelley in the private lounge of the Ritz Carlton hotel overlooking Central Park. Today she is the CEO of Ipsos Open Thinking Exchange; a product of Ipsos' 2010 acquisition of her former company OTX Research (listen to the podcast to learn how this came full circle for Shelley). If I could use only one word to summarize Shelley, it would have to be passionate.  When Shelley has an idea stuck in her head, she pursues it until it becomes a reality. If someone tells her it can’t be done, that only motivates her more to make it happen.  Listen up as Shelley discusses her career path and the lessons she has learned along the way (like how to speak EBITDA). I will forewarn you that there is a lot of industry talk in this podcast (and a few F-Bombs).  If you stick with it though you will get a glimpse at the softer side of Shelley Zalis. Given that it is Spring, this episode pairs well with a nice New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc; might I recommend Kim Crawford?
