Day 10: Fire and Rain Today we will focus on the ministry of Elijah. If you read 1 Kings chapters 17 and 18, you'll see how God used him. For example, Elijah prayed seven times for rain after a long drought. The book of James also mentions this occasion, and we know from that account that not only did Elijah's prayers bring rain, but they had also stopped the rain three years earlier! Of course, God's will is always for his power and wisdom to be revealed, yet it took Elijah's prayers to fulfil this before the Israelites and king Ahab. This was just one of many displays of power as a result of Elijah's prayers; another is found at the ‘Carmel Corral', in 1 Kings 18, where there was a competition to prove whose God was better. God's fire fell on the sacrifice, which was previously doused three times in water… just to be sure. Following the fire fall, scripture tells us that Elijah “climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.” An unusual posture that describes a birthing position, a prayer that is prevailing and travailing - a co-labouring with God to bring about His purposes. We have already seen Elijah fed by ravens, restore a child to life, pray for drought, and call down fire and rain. We know His travailing and prevailing prayer was that the people would know God. Christians would pray all night during the civil rights movement in what was called 'shut-ins.' The sound of prayer from these places was not of words but guttural groans, a sound of labouring, their very being crying 'Oh God.' Their prayers brought change. I think of parents who are desperately seeking God for their loved ones. It is not a waste of time. God sees your labour and he will bring life. Lord, thank you for your encouragement that the joy of new life is the reward of our labouring in prayer for the salvation of our loved ones, friends, and the world. I pray for those who are tired of travailing, that you would draw near, encourage hearts and renew hope. Amen. Reflect and Respond Write a prayer of thanks for your salvation; thank God for the person who prayed for you. Pray for a lost friend or family member, asking Jesus to leave the 99 and pursue them. Ask that God would give you the heart of Jesus for the lost. Meditate on this verse: “Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God and that you are turning their hearts back again.” (1 Kings 18:37) Prayer Focus “Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) The first place we start to model our faith is around our children. Take a moment to pray for your children, grandchildren and those in your care. Pray for Tamara, Courtney, Janelle and Kim as they lead the children's ministry. Ask God to bless the children's ministry of Willow Park with creativity and strength. Volunteers are always needed; ask the Lord to provide the right people in the right places. Pray for your three prayer points.
Day 1: Let Us Pray Thank you for joining our journey of 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. I am anticipating all that God will do in our lives and church community. C. H. Spurgeon once said, “Whenever God determines to do a great work, He first sets His people to pray.” I pray as we journey through the next 21 days that these devotionals will encourage you and your faith journey. Each devotional will start with a thought, then onto a time of reflection and journaling. We have a natural tendency to remember what we should forget and forget what we should remember. I have found that journaling is the best antidote to spiritual amnesia. Following our reflection, we will follow prayer points for our Willow Park community and beyond, and of course pray for our three prayer points. As we begin our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting, we decide on our three specific prayer requests, three areas that will help us pray with purpose. The Lord is encouraging us to pray bold prayers. He is encouraging us to come before Him in holy anticipation, to be specific - so that we can point the glory directly to God. Prayers for the seemingly impossible. Let's focus our 21 days on the unseen realm and get our headlines from His word. It's no coincidence that being watchful and prayerful are coupled by the apostle Paul in his letter to the Colossians: “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” When Paul uses the word watchful, he refers to the ancient watchmen on the walls, who saw first and looked out across the horizon. As we enter this focused prayer time, let us see ourselves as His watchmen. In the words of theologian Walter Wink, “History belongs to the intercessors.” That's us! We are given a unique opportunity to change His-story. We are all familiar with the challenging verse, “Be Still and know that I am God.” But we often stay there. If we continue to read, we find this encouragement: “I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Tyler Stanton writes, “That's the destination of this prayer, the promise we become aware of in holy stillness.” Be still. Remember who God is. Remember who you are in Him. Lord, we dedicate the next 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting to You. Help us to focus each day. Speak to us your truths. We are expectant and know You are faithful and will answer. Amen. Reflect and Respond Write down the three areas of focused prayer, keep them in your Bible, post them on your mirror, set them as your screen-saver! Name and commit your three areas before the Lord. Wait on Him and ask for the gift of faith and promises over your three areas of prayer. What does the challenge to “Be still and know that He is God” mean to you? WPC Prayer Focus Ask God to show you your next step to go deeper in prayer. Pray that each of our monthly WillowOne Worship & Prayer gatherings across the network will grow and testify to an abundance of answered prayers. Pray for each community and ministry that a culture of prayer will exist. Pray for the city that churches across the region will hear a call to pray. Pray for your three prayer points.
Marcy Galle is a Parent Advocate and Co-Founder of Families Engaged For Effective Education. She is a former city councilmember of Willow Park just north of Aledo, Texas. Marcy is an expert in public information requests, the Texas Open Meetings Act (TOMA) and the public education grievance process. When local ISDs lawyer up, she steps in to help families exercise their parental rights as outlined in the Texas Education Code. There is a pattern of ungodly behavior in Godley ISD where she has dealt with the administration, the school board, and superintendent shirking their responsibilities and circumventing the law by propping up their lawyers against parents. She is also advocating for parents in Joshua ISD, Fort Worth ISD and others. Parents are being denied their constitutional right to speak at school board meetings. Districts across Texas are deploying antagonistic and disrespectful tactics to dissuade parents from testifying at board meetings. They often go into closed session for 1-2 hours at the beginning of meetings making working parents wait until the closed sessions adjourn before hearing public testimonies. DeSoto ISD is another repeat offender of TOMA. Regarding the captive market of public school students fed into the predatory social-emotional learning cash cow for vendors, parents are benign denied their right to opt in or opt out of these experimental learning technologies and strategies. Marcy helps families understand the laws written to protect children and parents so they can be empowered with the law in order to fight lawlessness. Company towns harm workers, they do nothing to combat inequality - in fact they only exacerbate inequality, and they DEFINITELY do not promote anything we can even remotely call ‘freedom' Company towns are nothing less than base feudalism. Restlessly creative across artistic disciplines, Earle has published both a novel and a collection of short stories; produced albums for other artists; and acted in films, TV shows, and on stage. He currently hosts a radio show for Sirius XM. In 2019, Earle appeared in the off-Broadway play Samara, for which he also wrote a score that The New York Times described as “exquisitely subliminal.” Each year, Earle organizes a benefit concert for the Keswell School, which his son John Henry attends and which provides educational programs for children and young adults with autism. ✅ LONE STAR DRY GOODS (sponsor info & links) A truly unique shopping experience geared towards men. Kathleen opens the show wearing a foam shark fin hat (sent by loyal Missouri Termite Shelby), and drinking a Yuengling Flight beer (which she highly recommends adding to your “Day Drinking” beer list of options.) TERMITE SHOUTOUTS: Kathleen is thrilled to go through mail from the PO box, thanking Termite Jen from Colorado, who sent a hilarious book called “Judgmental Maps.” Kathleen then thanks Termite Laura for her custom-made Baby Shoe Madigan” bracelet, which she will wear for luck while gambling in Vegas next month, and Termite Cindy for her tiny Crown Royal bags which will help out with all of Kathleen's “tiny organizational challenges” on the road. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Buffalo Wing Cheez-Its, which she LOVES (as she also loves regular Cheez-Its.). She then tastes Kroger's Private Selection Fire Roasted Poblano Ranch, which she finds to be delicious but also doesn't taste much like Ranch dressing. Kathleen finishes her tasting with Poppy's Tangy Carolina BBQ Popcorn which was sent from Termites Jessie and her mom Marian, which Kathleen also loves since it tastes exactly like her favorite vinegar-based BBQ sauce. UPDATE ON KATHLEEN'S QUEEN'S COURT: In this week's update from the Court, Kathleen advises listeners to check out Tanya's Instagram, since she's posting content from the road now that she's on tour. Kathleen then offers an update from Cher, who is an avid supporter of the #FreeBritney movement and whose Twitter feed continues to be CARA THE PYTHON FOUND: Kathleen laughs as she reads the call logs from the Mall of Louisiana staff to Animal Control when they found out that the 12-foot Burmese Python had escaped the zoo exhibit. It turns out that the staff watched the python escape, and then when no immediate help could be offered from County animal officials they hid from the snake and it slithered from sight. Kathleen completely agrees with that reaction.GOVERNOR RAVNSBORG'S HIT AND RUN: As an UPDATE to Episode 30, Kathleen reads an article advising that South Dakota's attorney general is attempting to access any psychiatric or psychological records of the man he struck and killed along a highway, alleging in court documents that the death may have been a suicide. Investigators say Ravnsborg was distracted and swerved out of his lane as Joe Boever, 55, walked on the shoulder with a flashlight. Kathleen reminds listeners that she believes the Governor had been doing a little “drinky-drinky,” which was the reason for the cover-up, and then offers multiple reasons as to why anyone wouldn't be carrying a flashlight on the shoulder of a road if they in fact wanted to kill themselves. ELIZABETH HOLMES TikTok FAN CLUB: When Theranos began to fall apart in 2015, hundreds of employees were laid off without warning. One former clinician was fired so suddenly that she walked out still wearing her lab coat, and as the Theranos fraud become a more mainstream subject she offered the coat for sale on the site Poshmark and a niche group of women called the “Holmies” was discovered. Kathleen is shocked at while reading the comments that the Holmies leave on TikTok, using the hashtag #GirlBoss to praise their "leader" and "queen" Elizabeth Holmes. They look up to her as an inspiration and feel as though she is brilliant in the unapologetic delivery of her strategic vision, which Kathleen reminds them MIGHT just land her in prison.DEATH OF ANOTHER BITCOIN BILLIONAIRE: In continuing with her love of cryptocurrency, Kathleen reads an article about a major bitcoin investor who suddenly died, leaving behind a cryptocurrency fortune reportedly worth more than $2 billion. Mircea Popescu, a Romanian national, drowned at the beginning of July off the coast of Costa Rica at the age of 41. Kathleen reads unconfirmed rumors swirling about the internet claim that he never shared his crypto wallet password with anyone, and his family cannot access his Bitcoin addresses. If nobody can gain access to his wallets (claimed to hold a million Bitcoins), those tokens could end up being lost forever. CATCHING A 4-POUND GOLDFISH: Kathleen laughs while reading an article out of Minnesota, where authorities are pleading with personal aquarium owners to stop releasing pet fish into waterways after several huge goldfish were pulled from a local lake. In November 2020, officials in Carver county (SW of Minneapolis) removed as many as 50,000 goldfish from local waters after oxygen levels were depreciating in local lakes, and a man caught a 4-pound goldfish while fishing.POST PANDEMIC AIRLINE ISSUES: As Kathleen heads back out onto the road, she shares stories of airport insanity that she has personally witnessed. She laughs as she reads a recent article about a woman who is duct-taped to her seat on an American Airlines flight when she tells a fellow passenger that she doesn't want the plane to “fly up anymore.” Kathleen goes on to report that the FAA has reported an increase in the number of reports of unruly behavior on flights since May 2021, when people started traveling again when COVID travel restrictions were lifted. Kathleen advises that she's going to start traveling with her Justin Bieber-themed duct tape in case she needs to ever be of assistance to flight crews. FACEBOOK BUILDS A VILLAGE: Termites know how Kathleen feels about Mark Zuckerberg, and she screams when she reads about plans that the company has to build an entire town called Willow Park near its headquarters in Menlo Park, CA. The development will include 1,729 apartments, a supermarket, a pharmacy, retail, as well as 1.25 million square feet of new Facebook office space housing roughly 7,000 employees. MEGALODON TEETH FOUND: In continuing with her love of sharks, Kathleen is thrilled to read an article about a man in Florida who found 2 rare megalodon teeth 3 weeks apart after Tropical Storm Elsa. DRUNK BUFFALO LEAD TO FARMER'S ARREST: Kathleen laughs out loud reading an article announcing that 3 Indian farmers were arrested for selling illegal alcohol after a herd of buffalo got drunk on their contraband moonshine. The buffalo were reported by a vet who noticed that water in the buffaloes' trough had turned a yellowish color, which was a result of the illegal liquor being hidden in their trough. MISSING PICASSO FOUND IN A BUSH: In continuing with her appreciation of the art world, Kathleen reads a news release advising that a 49-year-old builder has been arrested for the theft of Picasso's Head of a Woman, which was stolen during a raid on the Athens National Gallery in 2012. The piece of art would have been "impossible to sell or go on display" because it had a personal inscription from Picasso on the back that read, in French, "For the Greek people, a tribute by Picasso." Investigators believe that the thief had worked as an oil painter himself and had knowledge of the materials and of the gallery, and that he stole what he could get his hands on in the short window he was inside for the heist. When he learned that police were closing in on him after more than a decade of hiding the Picasso work, he moved it from a warehouse to the ravine where they were finally discovered.WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen recommends watching “The Flight Attendant” on HBO Max, which Kathleen put off watching forever but ended up binging the entire Season 1 in 2 nights. The lead character is played by Kaley Cuoco, who also played “Penny” on The Big Bang Theory. Kathleen tells a story about visiting Ireland with Lewis Black when a young girl in a restaurant recognized him for his role on a Big Bang Theory episode. Frenchie's then-frontman Shooter Jennings parents were gently stirring awake a house full of late-night partiers, and then Jessi made breakfast for their guests. “It was surreal,” recalls Frenchie, who describes posing for a photo while sitting on Buddy Holly's 1958 Ariel Cyclone motorcycle – a gift to Waylon from the Crickets on his 40th birthday. “Just two months earlier, I had been in L.A. with a backpack and $200, answering ads for ‘guitar player wanted.'” After a late-night jam session in L.A., Frenchie was approached by Shooter's drummer Lex Lipsitz, a native of Waco, Texas. Their hard-rock band Stargunn needed a guitarist just like him, Lex told him, so Frenchie went down to their rehearsal space at the corner of Hollywood and Vine to audition on the spot. “After about 15 minutes, Shooter asked me where I lived and I told him it was at a youth hostel a few blocks away. He said, ‘Nah, you're living with us at the band house from now on' and they took me down to get my stuff.” ✅ LONE STAR DRY GOODS (podcast partner info & links) A truly unique shopping experience geared towards men. H. Adamson High School with Michael Martin Murphey and B.W. Stephenson. In the 1970s, Hubbard wrote “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother,” first made famous by Jerry Jeff Walker's 1973 recording. In 1976, he signed with Warner Bros. Records. The result was “a botched sound” that Hubbard disapproved of vehemently, but the album was released despite his attempts to block it. Throughout the 80's and '90s, Hubbard recorded albums for various other labels but struggled with the sales of his mix of country, folk, and blues. Eventually, a steady following began to re-discover Hubbard's music, and he has been recording steadily since. His guitar technique uses a strumming by the left (fretting) hand that is very old but not frequently seen in double time without changing the right-hand beat. Since 2000, Hubbard has released ten records, including ‘Snake Farm' in 2006. Most recently, in 2020, Hubbard signed his first major-label release since 1978 on Big Machine Records. ‘Co-Staring' is a set of collaborations featuring Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Don Was, and Black Crowe's frontman Chris Robinson. If you've ever been to Willow Park Wine & Spirits looking for advice on a great beer to try, there's a very good chance you've already met Dave Gingrich, AKA Dave The Beer Guy. We have a great chat about how he acquired his highly coveted title, why he loves cheesy horror films, and how a heart attack in his 30s helped him grow up.As we've discussed on some previous episodes of the podcast, retail is a hard business to do well and an even harder one to stick with. Dave has broken the mould on this with his 19 year history with Willow Park, which started out when he was just 21 years old and trying to get out of working as a janitor, a job he'd long grown bored of. As he puts it “I'm a little too bright and bubbly to be trapped in a boiler room.”His time at Willow Park started with him picking orders for licenses, and even though he wasn't crazy about packing pallets full of beer before long he was in charge of running the entire licensee department on weekends. Dave knew this wouldn't be his final stop at Willow Park as on his very first day he told their previous “The Beer Guy” that he'd be coming for his job. Sooner or later he would achieve this goal and today he is a fixture in Calgary's craft beer industry, bottling up the passion of brewers for his customers to enjoy. We talk a bit about Dave's heroes and inspirations including his dad, known affectionately as Positive Pete, the legendary Owen Hart, and former guest on the podcast and fellow Calgary beer veteran Alastair Smart. Dave shares how Alastair helps him stay focused in his career and always see the positives in his work, and how the ever positive outlook of his father has helped him overcome the physical and mental stresses of an early heart attack. We also discuss his love for cheesy horror films and he leaves us with a couple of his own picks, which you can watch yourself with the links below!—Get your own copy of the books and music discussed in this episode:Redneck ZombiesTucker & Dale Vs.
