Jon Randall is one of Nashville's premiere songwriters. A Grammy, CMA, and ACM award winner he has been the creative force behind many projects with household names like Miranda Lambert, Allison Kraus, Emmylou Harris, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and many others. This year he released an album with Mrianda Lambert and Jack Ingram called the Marfa Tapes. He also recorded and released a self titled album of songs he had written over the years. I had a chance to talk with him about his incredible career, and this fantastic album. I hope you dig it!
It was such a privilege talking with Jon Randall on this week's podcast about everything he's been through since making the move from small town Texas to big city Nashville right out of High School. Jon is best known for his production work on songs for Dierks Bentley, Brothers Osborne, Pat Green and so on. He is also the co-writer of "Whiskey Lullaby" and many other beautiful songs AND he's released two records of his own just this year. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast
Episode #144 – JON RANDALL Welcome to episode #144 of The Troubadour! On today's episode we get to visit with an extremely successful songwriter, producer and guitarist. Jon Randall made his way to Nashville from Texas over 3 decades ago and now 15 years after his last solo release he's just released a new self-titled project that I think is simply one of the best records I've heard all year. Jon recently got some well-deserved recognition through teaming up with Jack Ingram and Miranda Lambert on the hugely successful “Marfa Tapes” project, but this is really just another validation of the artist, producer and songwriter that he is. Prior to the success of the “Marfa Tapes”, Jon achieved acclaim as a producer in working with some of the biggest names in country music including Dierks Bentley, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Dwight Yoakam, Jack Ingram, Pat Green and others. As a songwriter, he was also celebrated as co-writer of the 2005 CMA Song of the Year for a little tune he wrote with Bill Anderson named “Whiskey Lullaby”. He's won Grammy's, ACM and CMA awards and wrote with legends like Guy Clark, which that alone, makes me envious. To find out more about Jon, where he's playing as well as where you can buy his music, go to www.jonrandallmusic.com . So, let's get to it folks! Nashville-based producer/singer/songwriter Jon Randall has collaborated with a who's-who list of country royalty for two decades, from Emmylou Harris, Reba McEntire and Dwight Yoakam to Maren Morris, Little Big Town and Lyle Lovett. But this past year has brought Jon a bit more out from behind-the-scenes: He's got his first solo album in 15 years available now, as well as The Marfa Tapes — a joint project with long-time friends Miranda Lambert and Jack Ingram — which captures the trio's lo-fi, single-take performances under the stars of the Texas desert. On top of astounding songs and rich three-part harmonies, The Marfa Tapes' genuine intimacy and lack of studio gloss are unheard of for mainstream country music in 2021, and the approach suggests why Pitchfork championed the LP as “a late-night love letter” to the genre's myths. On this episode, Jon muses about ZZ Top's early cover art, his family's bluegrass background, and how approving vinyl test pressings recently gave him hope that in the age of the digital streaming, listening to music at home can once again become a communal experience. Stop by jonrandallmusic.com for everything regarding Jon's projects.
In this episode we review Sturgill Simpson's "The Ballad of Dood & Juanita" and "The Marfa Tapes" by Jack Ingram, Miranda Lambert, and Jon Randall.

Frenchie's then-frontman Shooter Jennings parents were gently stirring awake a house full of late-night partiers, and then Jessi made breakfast for their guests. “It was surreal,” recalls Frenchie, who describes posing for a photo while sitting on Buddy Holly's 1958 Ariel Cyclone motorcycle – a gift to Waylon from the Crickets on his 40th birthday. “Just two months earlier, I had been in L.A. with a backpack and $200, answering ads for ‘guitar player wanted.'” After a late-night jam session in L.A., Frenchie was approached by Shooter's drummer Lex Lipsitz, a native of Waco, Texas. Their hard-rock band Stargunn needed a guitarist just like him, Lex told him, so Frenchie went down to their rehearsal space at the corner of Hollywood and Vine to audition on the spot. “After about 15 minutes, Shooter asked me where I lived and I told him it was at a youth hostel a few blocks away. He said, ‘Nah, you're living with us at the band house from now on' and they took me down to get my stuff.” ✅ LONE STAR DRY GOODS (podcast partner info & links) A truly unique shopping experience geared towards men. Most recently, in May of 2001, Jack, alongside fellow singer/songwriters Miranda Lambert and Jon Randall, released The Marfa Tapes. According to Lambert, The Marfa Tapes stems from a fruitful songwriting partnership that has already resulted in the 2018 ACM Song of the Year “Tin Man” (Ingram / Lambert / Randall). Additionally, Jack is no stranger to the airwaves as a TV host of the Texas Music Scene, a half-hour weekly program that airs in over 70 U.S markets and has won 22 Telly awards and 2 People's Choice awards. In 2013, Jack teamed up with actor Matthew McConaughey and football coach Mack Brown to create an annual multi-day fundraiser, golf tournament, & concert, MJM. Since its inception, MJM has raised nearly $20 million for children's charities. ✅ RAY WYLIE HUBBARD (guest bio & links) Singer/songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard grew up in Oak Cliff in southwest Dallas, Texas, and attended W. H. Adamson High School with Michael Martin Murphey and B.W. Stephenson. In the 1970s, Hubbard wrote “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother,” first made famous by Jerry Jeff Walker's 1973 recording. In 1976, he signed with Warner Bros. Records. The result was “a botched sound” that Hubbard disapproved of vehemently, but the album was released despite his attempts to block it. Throughout the 80's and '90s, Hubbard recorded albums for various other labels but struggled with the sales of his mix of country, folk, and blues. Eventually, a steady following began to re-discover Hubbard's music, and he has been recording steadily since. His guitar technique uses a strumming by the left (fretting) hand that is very old but not frequently seen in double time without changing the right-hand beat. Since 2000, Hubbard has released ten records, including ‘Snake Farm' in 2006. Most recently, in 2020, Hubbard signed his first major-label release since 1978 on Big Machine Records. ‘Co-Staring' is a set of collaborations featuring Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Don Was, and Black Crowe's frontman Chris Robinson. You Marry No Railroad Man. Escuchar audio
