Fresh from Manila, co-host Ray Powell—drawing on his expertise as the Director of the SeaLight maritime transparency organization—takes the "guest" seat to unpack the events with co-host Jim Carouso. The discussion highlights the escalating China-Philippines tensions, with its implications for regional stability and US alliances.Our hosts describe how a Chinese destroyer slammed into a China Coast Guard vessel while pursuing the much smaller Philippine Coast Guard ship BRP Suluan near Scarborough Shoal on August 11, 2025. The collision crumpled the Coast Guard ship's bow and likely caused casualties. Ray notes the Suluan got within 10.5 nautical miles of the shoal, closer than any Philippine vessel in over a year, which challenged China's undeclared exclusion zone around the contested feature in a way that drew an unexpected military response.Providing context, Ray traces the shoal's history: China's 2012 seizure, the 2016 arbitral ruling affirming traditional fishing rights for all nations (including the Philippines), and recent escalations. Since spring 2024, China has enforced a 25-30 nautical mile exclusion zone, blocking Philippine government vessels and fishermen alike in defiance of the arbitral award. The Philippines' “Kadiwa” mission involved five vessels to provide direct aid to fishermen now forced to operate in exposed waters due to China's denial of the shoal.The hosts analyze the game-changer: the People's Liberation Army-Navy (PLAN) destroyer's direct involvement. For Filipinos, all this took place near an extremely important fishing ground within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone.A potential silver lining? The mishap exposes China's vulnerabilities, and could deter future rash actions–but only if Beijing learns the right lessons. Its recent history, its state media's unwillingness to even acknowledge the mishap, and its blame-shifting suggest it may elect a more confrontational path.

This week Chris Woakes the English cricket batting star dislocated his shoulder in the England-India test, then yesterday came out to bat with a dislocated shoulder at number 11 to try and save the test! Very brave stuff! What is a shoulder dislocation? The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body. It's a ‘ball and socket' joint, however sockets aren't deep enough so the joint is supported by tendons and muscles. Occasionally the ball can come completely out of the socket – a dislocation. It can dislocate forward, which is common, or backwards, which is less common. How do they happen and what are the signs? Generally an accident that puts severe force on the shoulder can cause dislocation. For example: Falling from ladder and holding on it. Collision in sport or falling onto an outstretched arm. Car accidents. Some people have very flexible shoulders and can dislocate with simple things like rolling over in bed, hanging out washing. Effects: severe pain, unable to move the shoulder, occasional numbness down arm. You can see the deformity – can see the ball out of the socket, bulging out. What do we do about it? See a doctor who will examine the shoulder. An Xray to make sure it is not broken. Then pop it back into place with light sedation or anaesthetic. Then keep the arm in a sling for 1-2 weeks, avoiding lifting or using the shoulder for six weeks. It can take up to 3-4 months to fully heal. Physio is often important to strengthen the shoulder and get moving. Are there any complications? You can fracture the shoulder. Can tear cartilage (or lining) of the shoulder. Sometimes the tendons and muscles supporting the shoulder tear – call this a rotator cuff tear. Nerve damage can occur. Sometimes requires surgery. Welcome to your weekly UAS News Update. We have three stories for you this week: The FAA has finally unveiled its proposed rule for Beyond Visual Line of Sight operations, an update to the story about a drone collision in Kerrville Texas, and we have some major leaks about the DJI Mini 5 ProThe FAA has released its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, or NPRM, for Beyond Visual Line of Sight, or BVLOS, operations. This is a massive deal for our drone industry. For years, complex BVLOS operations have required a slow, case-by-case waiver process. This new rule aims to create a standardized, scalable framework to normalize these flights. The proposal is designed to unlock the economic potential of drones in areas like package delivery, agriculture, and infrastructure inspection.So, what's in the proposal? There's a ton. We're working on a full video debrief of the NPRM now, but here are some points: • Operations will be at or below 400 feet, • Aircraft up to 1,320 lbs, • All operators would need FAA approval for the area where they intend to fly. They would identify the boundaries and the approximate number of daily operations, as well as takeoff, landing, and loading areas, if applicable, • All drones would need Remote ID and lighting, • BVLOS drones could be operated over people in different situations, • There are security requirements for BVLOS operators, • BVLOS operators may not need ANY FAA certificates.What we haven't seen in the NPRM so far is: • Any mention of network remote ID, • and any mention of extended visual line of sight for Part 107 operators.Next up, An update to the Helicopter and Drone mid-air out of Kerrville, Texas last month.During the catastrophic floods in Kerrville, Texas, on July 7th, a military UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing after colliding with a drone. Initial reports immediately blamed an unauthorized civilian drone violating the active Temporary Flight Restriction, or TFR. We reported this as it was reported by others, stating that the drone appeared to be an unauthorized flight in the TFR.However, testimony at a state hearing later clarified what really happened. The drone involved was actually an AUTHORIZED search and rescue drone that is alleged to have malfunctioned. According to the report, it “flew too high, stalled, and then collided with the helicopter”. Last up are some DJI leaks! It looks like we're getting our first real glimpse of the DJI Mini 5 Pro, thanks to some leaked images of the product box and a new render. And if these specs are real, this could be a game-changer for the mini drone category. The box confirms a 1-inch image sensor capable of shooting up to 4K/120fps video. That would be quite an upgrade from the 1/1.3-inch sensor in the Mini 4 Pro. The leak also points to a gimbal with 225 degrees of rotation for more flexible camera movements, a 48mm medium-telephoto mode, and Nightscape Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing that uses a forward-facing LiDAR sensor. But here's the most important detail, and it's what's MISSING from the box. The Mini 4 Pro box clearly stated "Less Than 249 g," but that text is nowhere to be found on this new leak. With a bigger sensor and a LiDAR unit, it's very possible the Mini 5 Pro will tip the scales over that magic 250-gram mark. A US tourist visiting West Clare is appealing for help after her dog went missing following a road traffic accident in the Kilmurry McMahon area. The woman was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment and, in the confusion at the scene, her black Boston Terrier ran from the car and hasn't been seen since. Understandably, she's devastated and now hopes the local community might be able to help reunite her with her beloved pet. The NTSB just finished a 3-day hearing about the fatal January 2025 midair collision between an airliner and a U.S. Army helicopter over the Potomac River. Greg Feith, John Goglia and Todd Curtis tuned in and share their takeaways.The hearing covered many issues, particularly the role that FAA and Army procedures and systems played in the crash. They credit NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy and Member Todd Inman with assertive questioning that took the FAA to task for lack of cooperation with the NTSB. The NTSB can't make regulations and can only recommend them. This independence is crucial, but it limits its power to implement significant changes. The regulatory process and the technological complexity of the air traffic system mean that any recommendations coming from this investigation may take years.Overall, this accident investigation is being conducted in a way that will advance aviation safety. However, the resources devoted to this investigation may affect the quality of other current NTSB investigations and aviation safety initiatives.
