"Mediating institutions, such as the family, churches, and Fraternal organizations, feed the life of the civic community. They stand between the individual and the state. And when they recede, the state fills the vacuum." - Archbishop Charles Chaput That's a quote from an article in "First Things" magazine written by the retired Archbishop of Philadelphia, Charles Chaput. If you're not familiar with him, just know that he is student of political and American history, as well as a keen observer of political discourse, especially when it concerns the Catholic Church and Christianity as a whole. He knows his stuff. And for all his political involvement in calling out the hypocrisy of Catholic politicians and getting involved in the political fight over abortion and gender, he was pretty much shunned by Pope Francis, who Chaput was told didn't want any more bishops like him. But even though retired, Chaput hasn't stopped adding his voice to the public square. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Chaput talks about his article in "First Things," called "Fire Upon the Earth", and how America is at a critical precipice concerning her weakened religious foundations of which the state is taking advantage by inserting itself as the authority over theological beliefs. Issues like 'conscience rights' of medical professionals, 'parental rights' and the public schools, they're all being attacked. And the irony is they're being attacked by the very institution charged with protecting them... the government. So, what's the solution? Chaput says, it's what it has always been, faith in Jesus Christ; to know Him, His character, His love, His mercy, and to teach your children the same. Learn more about your ad choices. A big push for people to return to the office is the argument that spontaneous interaction is critical to the growth of the business. The fear is that people are not communicating and it has hindered innovation. However, let's look at the number of fully remote companies who have been thriving throughout the past few years. The big differentiator is the structure and setting up interaction channels to foster communication. Mastering the interview has been more challenging as it is often difficult to read nonverbal cues and interactions. As we have grown more comfortable with this method of interviewing, the structure of consistent interview questions has been the single most important element in hiring success. Guest Bio: David Wald is cofounder and CEO of Aclaimant, an insight driven workflow solution for safety and risk management. As CEO, David's primary focus is driving the company's vision, identifying and executing strategic partner and customer relationships, and growing the Aclaimant team and investor base. The company has been remote first for the past 8 years! Prior to Aclaimant, David spent time with the Lightbank Venture Capital fund in Chicago on both the investment team, and as an operator and EIR. He was also a management consultant at Bain and Company. David graduated from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, and currently resides in Chicago with his wife and three kids. Today we discuss: What's critical in a remote work/interviewing environment How to fuel communication away from the watercooler Hiring Story: Intro to our top candidate's brother's high school friend…  Series of comedic events Got drenched on the way to the meeting He took the job anyway, now is their department head Challenges today? Artificial collisions- bumping into people in the hall, watercooler conversation across departments In a remote environment there are no collisions that aren't preplanned Creating a knowledge transfer in a remote environment Zoom is not good for rapid collaboration More than 4 people in a meeting Create feedback loops  People feel disconnected Why is this important to the company? Cant have passive actors in a remote environment I was waiting for…. Proactive collaborators Remote vs scaling Onboarding is challenging remotely  A lot of time spent  Rick's Nuggets Communication must be fueled by leadership Daily huddles (connection)Not mandatory, but everyone shows up How do we solve the problem?  Tooling: Slack- internal connectivity tool Every team, project & customer have their own room  Sole service purpose in every room- avoid the noise Zoom  candidates , customers & internal Zoom interviews Scientific method Each person testing on different topics Prep the candidates Notion - collaboration tool Documenting every process and keeping it clean True information source & driving everyone to that location Dedicated team connected hours Office hours for every team (meeting) once a week Happy hour, game day, trivia,  Informally stop and chat Team members end up city hopping!  Deliberate information distribution pathways Information needs to get out  Surveying tools, function specific data,  all hands meetings (4-6 weeks) Daily standups Feedback Channel Every manager & director is plugged into the right sequence of events to gather feedback All very deliberate Everyone in the know Rick's Nuggets Remote (Zoom, Teams) interview  Rules of engagementStart on time, end on time Interviewer questions assignedMust gain evidence to support decision Must take objective notes Clear decision to move forward or releaseNo scorecard Feedback Key Takeaways that the Audience can plug into their business today! Join Jeff Zweerink and Mike Strauss as they discuss new discoveries taking place at the frontiers of science that have theological and philosophical implications, as well as new discoveries that point to the reality of God's existence. Mike Strauss' presentation on fruitless Higgs searches suggests that the goal of basic science research is often to discover something yet unknown about the universe. Yet, many experiments either find nothing unusual or measure something to be in agreement with the expectation. Are these null results useful, and what can scientists learn from them? Here we investigate two papers from the ATLAS collaboration at CERN that have made measurements of the Higgs boson and looked for new Higgs bosons—neither finding anything unexpected—and discuss what insights we gain from such experiments. Scientists almost universally agree that the universe looks fine-tuned for life, but many question whether the design is real. Often, scientists appeal to a multiverse or undiscovered symmetries of nature to explain the fine-tuning. A recent paper explores a third possibility—that something in the laws of physics triggers a mechanism that generates the apparent fine-tuning. We discuss this new approach to see if it “naturally” explains fine-tuning or still points toward a Creator. This is the first time that the race will be held outside the island of Hawaii and provides a brand new and challenging course for the athletes to contend with.   The strength of both the men's and women's fields is seriously impressive with Olympic champions, multiple Kona winners, young blood and experienced veterans creating a plethora of athletes who could contend for the win or reach the podium.   However, the lack of athletes including Jan Frodeno, Patrick Lange, Joe Skipper, Laura Philipp and Lucy Charles-Barclay – unable to race due to injury or illness – will no doubt shake up the race dynamics as triathlon looks to crown its first IM world champ since October 2019.     Thorsten Radde's Report   Page 62 of 166   Page 64 of 166       What's New in the 303: Comparing federal eMTB rules and directives In the last few years, federal agencies have undergone processes to revise policies regarding eMTB access and management. With both the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) guidance and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) rule now finalized, IMBA's Policy Manager Aaron Clark has analyzed both in-depth to compare similarities, differences, ramifications and next steps for eMTB access on the federal public lands mountain bikers ride and steward most. We want to hear the community's questions about the analysis, the policies, and about these changes. On March 31, 2022, the USFS finalized long-awaited e-bike guidance. The guidance incorporated a number of IMBA's recommendations made during a public comment period in October 2020, in which thousands of mountain bikers took part. The guidance has some great elements in line with IMBA's recommendations: it requires a local public process to adequately collect local sentiment on possible pros and cons of eMTB access; thorough National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Travel Management Planning; the guidance distinguishes between class 1, class 2 and class 3 eMTBs to ensure quality experiences for all trail users; and the guidance manages eMTBs as a new category, separate from traditional mountain bikes. Unfortunately, USFS fell short by reclassifying non-motorized trails to motorized trails where eMTBs would be allowed, even if all other motorized uses were to remain prohibited.   What You Need to Know About New Colorado Safety Stop Law By Mike Raber, Board member of Bike Jeffco   There is a lot of misunderstanding about the recently passed amendment to the Colorado Safety Stop statute, so I am providing clarification.   The Colorado Bicycle Safety Stop law was enacted in 2019 as an opt-in statute for municipalities and counties to implement on a voluntary basis.  The amended law changed the existing law effective statewide on April 13, 2022 when Governor Polis signed the bill.  It has been shown to assist in reducing bicycle automobile collisions at intersections in those municipalities and counties where it was implemented. 8 states in addition to Colorado have adopted Safety Stop laws statewide with positive results for reducing collisions.  Colorado State Patrol and Colorado Department of Highways statistics for the last several years document over 70% of bicycle & motor vehicle collisions happen at intersections.  Collisions don't happen between bicyclists and motor vehicles when bicyclists can cross an intersection when there is no traffic and it's safe to proceed, this is what the 2019 statute provided for. Due to the confusion on where the 2019 statute was and was not adopted between municipalities and counties, the law was amended on April 13, 2022 to make it effective statewide to eliminate this confusion.     New Bike Day Argon 18 Every component and part itemized Andy Schmit Service Course - Custom Bikes — The Service Course The Article Saturday Ride       Video of the Week:   XTERRA athlete profile Suzie Snyder   Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week.  Please be sure to follow us @303endurance and of course go to iTunes and give us a rating and a comment.  We'd really appreciate it! In an era of spectacular thoroughbreds, Spectacular Bid was perhaps the most exalted racehorse of them all. In 1979 he won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes—and transcended his sport on a run of twelve consecutive stakes victories—but his quest for the Triple Crown was lost with a third‑place finish in the Belmont Stakes due to a series of bizarre events that have never been accurately reported. In The Fast Ride, Jack Gilden tells the story of what really happened that day the Bid lost the biggest race of his life. Along the way, he introduces the reader to a cast of characters from the gilded age of late twentieth‑century horse racing, from Bid's owners, the renowned Meyerhoff family, to Grover “Buddy” Delp, the fast‑talking trainer, to teenage jockey Ronnie Franklin, whose meteoric rise to fame aboard Spectacular Bid came at the cost of his innocence and well‑being. Also present are four of the era's magnificent Latino riders, Ángel Cordero Jr., Jacinto Vasquez, Georgie Velasquez, and Ruben Hernandez, who all felt the sting of rejection and bigotry during their long careers even as they found their way and raised the level of competition to a feverish pitch. Underlying Spectacular Bid's saga was a thin line between hard work and excess, including substance abuse, animal manipulation and doping, and race fixing. Hardly anyone in the horse's circle made it out unscathed or undamaged. The Fast Ride is the story of a great racehorse, unfulfilled dreams, the exhilaration and steep price of striving at all costs, and an American era in which getting everything you ever wanted could be the most empty and unfulfilling sensation of all. Jack Gilden is a past winner of the Simon Rockower journalism award. He is the author of Collision of Wills: Johnny Unitas, Don Shula, and the Rise of the Modern NFL (Nebraska, 2018). He also consults for businesses about their messaging and teaches journalism and composition at the college level. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support
