When birders talk about the importance of a bird-friendly yard, they often mean insects even if they don't mention them explicitely. And so people that want to attract birds need to get comfortable with bugs. Colorado birder David Leatherman is a fan of bug-bird interactions and in his piece The Importance of Native Plants and Insects Amid the Reality of Modern Bird Habitats, in the April 2024 issue of Birding magazine, he encourages birders to familiarize themselves with living bird food. He joins host Nate Swick to discuss it. Also, it's 2024 Young Birder of the Year Season! Meet our new awardees and learn more about this exceptional program. In this episode, Andrea speaks with Adam Dhalla - a 17-year-old birder, designer of the game Find the Birds, and recipient of the ABA's Young Birder of the Year award. Adam's passion is the intersection of nature and technology. Adam describes becoming interested in birds and bird conservation as an 11-year-old. He quickly realized that birds are in trouble and that there weren't many people his age engaged in birding and bird conservation. As a gamer himself, he decided to create Find the Birds, a game that would teach kids like him about birds and conservation issues with the eventual goal of putting the game down and going out into the field. Adam talks about the journey of finding mentors, pitching Find the Birds, and eventually launching it in 2021. Andrea Gress studied Renewable Resource Management at the University of Saskatchewan. She pivoted towards birds, after an internship in South Africa. Upon returning, she worked with Piping Plovers in Saskatchewan and now coordinates the Ontario Piping Plover Conservation Program for Birds Canada. Follow her work at @ontarioplovers

Both come to their positions having worked extensively in their field and with big ideas about how to make these two pillars of American Birding Association bigger, better, and more fun for birders of every age and station. We're excited to introduce them to you. Subscribe to the podcast at Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, and Google Podcasts, and please leave a rating or a review if you are so inclined! We appreciate it!

In order for us to take care of our bodies, we eat well, exercise and make sure to get enough sleep. That's our internal environment. And the environment that surrounds us -- air, soil, water and ecosystems -- is equally important for our health and the health and well being of others. It is so important that we do our due diligence in helping nature to thrive, however we can. As young people looking towards the future, we can all take responsibility for our planet and environment, making sure that That starts with taking care of the environment so that future generations will be able to enjoy the benefits in years to come. Stand up for what you care for One of the most difficult things for people to do is to stand up for their beliefs and what they care for. Sticking up for what you believe in and care for builds your self-respect because you're following through with your values. When you stand up for what you believe in, you are your own person. You are in charge of what you do. Stand up for what you believe in and care for, even if it means standing by yourself. Because even if you are standing alone, you'll know for a fact that it was your choice. Fight for what you believe in and care for because if you don’t stand up for them, who will? Try and try again Trying again is important since failures are a part of life and if we stop after failure we allow ourself to accept defeat. We should grow stronger with failure. With determination and perseverance we must keep trying to achieve what we want in life. Trying takes commitment and an intention to give the best of yourself to something without necessarily knowing the outcome. Focus on what can be learnt from a failure and hace a better chance of success the next time around. Syncify An app that lets you be social at a distance. The ABA has a long history of supporting young birders through our Young Birder of the Year competitions and the young birder camps in Colorado and Delaware, programs that have had real positive impacts on the young people who participate in them. Host Nate Swick talks with four young birders--Cayenne Sweeney, Bailey Eichhorn, Diego Blanco and Johanna Beam--about their experiences. They share what it means to participate in these programs, and what the birding community can do to support them. Also, Nate wraps up his, er, interesting spring.
