Every second week, Colm and Andrew review some of the best (and some of the worst) films that revolve around sport. Football, tennis, baseball, basketball, golf: nothing is off-limits for Hollywood. Simply put, Balls on Film is a fortnightly podcast about movies about sport. Lovely.
For the third time in Balls On Film history, we're making changes to The List. Everyone makes mistakes, and Lord knows we've made a few, which is why we're going to be taking another look at our list of the greatest sports movies of all time. We have the Space Jam talk; Andrew tells us about his Rocky Balboa-related problems; Jerry Maguire comes up again, because of course it does; we re-evaluate Mystery, Alaska; and after weeks of teasing it, Twomey lets out his For Love Of The Game frustrations. For the first time in Balls On Film history, we're looking at a sequel. It's a biggie: Rocky Balboa. Like The Italian Stallion stepping back into the ring after a long time out, we see whether the more modern take on this iconic movie character can knock the original off its perch. Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill star in what is one of the more unromantic looks at sport we've covered on Balls On Film. It's time to chat Moneyball. Like a few other movies that we've covered, Moneyball focuses on what happens off the field as former pro baseball player Billy Beane tries to turn a team of misfits into a team of winners. For a movie aimed at kids, there sure is a lot of hatred thrown at that poor zebra that thinks he's a horse. Racing Stripes is a weird movie. As you'll hear Twomey point out on this podcast, it's odd that no one makes a big deal out of a teenage girl being a boss jockey, there's a Rocky 4-esque montage and those flies are really something. Also, Dustin Hoffman puts in a performance we'll likely never forget. A lot of the real players in this movie mightn't be fans of the source material, but you can't dispute the brilliance of Michael Sheen in The Damned United. The movie based on the book based on Brian Clough's short time in charge at Leeds United delves into the relationship of a football manager and his players, as well as the relationship between two old friends. We kick off a shorter season of Balls On Film with our first non-English language movie and one of the indiest of indie films we've ever looked at on this podcast: Mercenary. While it starts as a well-obverved look at how French rugby can pluck amateur players from their homes, it begins to fall apart in the middle when the other stories become more prominent. Andrew also wasn't a big fan of attacking a man while he's getting a tattoo. But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. The day has finally come: Balls On Film is reviewing a Paul Newman movie. To be fair, this is a Paul Newman movie that many consider to be the man's best. Essentially, The Hustler tells the story of one pool player's need to beat another. But, then, The Hustler is a lot of things. It's a takedown of capitalism, the control one person can have over another, and how you sometimes have to lose in order to win, but it's mostly just quite a decent film. Whether your favourite is Jackie or Paul, that's something we can all agree on. Despite this being the oldest movie Balls On Film has covered, the general consensus is that the sport of pool – and the seedy underbelly of this circuit – is captured and shot really well. But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. Listen to this episode of Balls On Film to find out what The BOF Boys think of The Hustler. Billie Jean King leads a group of women that are fighting for equal pay in tennis, all while she juggles with her own sexuality. Battle Of The Sexes looks at the most-watched tennis match in history, as King takes on male chauvinist Bobby Riggs in a game that had a massive impact on the sport. While some terrific performances prop this film up, there’s dissension amongst The BOF Boys when it comes to the delivery of the film’s central message. When it comes to the depiction of tennis, Battle Of The Sexes knocks it out of the park. From camera positioning to the use of real commentary, this film may well be considered one of the best we’ve covered. But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. Former IRA member Danny Flynn is just out of prison and all he wants to do is box, but that proves a little difficult in late '90s Belfast. The Boxer looks at the tension in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, and how violence impacts every aspect of life. Flynn wants to focus on being a good influence on the community, but he can never truly escape his past... until he more or less escapes. At the time, former world champion boxer Barry McGuigan said that Daniel Day-Lewis could've gone pro if he wanted to. While maybe a tad hyperbolic, the boxing scenes in this movie elevate this film somewhat. This is the first episode of a new era of Balls On Film. We welcome Stephen Twomey to the fold as our duo now becomes a trio, and we're no longer going through the films scene-by-scene. We hope you enjoy what is sort of like a pilot episode for this slightly modified version of Balls On Film. With all that said, listen to this episode to find out what us BOF Boys thought of The Boxer. Happy Gilmore grew up absolutely loving ice hockey, so it's only natural he'd grow up to play in a golf major to save his grandmother's house. We don't make the rules. Happy's tax-dodging nan has had the family home taken from her, but Happy's recently discovered that he has a serious golf shot on him. So, Happy decides to try and make some cash on the course in order to get the house back. Then he meets his main rival – that nasty pup, Shooter McGavin – and things get real personal. Also, Shooter McGavin is the absolute best. Some of the shots are obviously a bit silly, but Happy Gilmore does pretty well to respect its own rules when it comes to the depiction of golf. But, ya know... if a bit of scaffold fell on the course at a big golf tournament, play would've probably been postponed. But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. The boys of Mystery, Alaska basically grew up on the ice. Ice hockey and the Saturday game is life for this lot. But, is that enough to beat a professional outfit like the New York Rangers? Well... probably not. After a bit of a buzz around a magazine article, an ice hockey match is set up between the team of Mystery and the New York Rangers. A group of amateur ice hockey players have the opportunity to go down in the history books as the team the pros underestimated. It's just a bit of a shame that more wasn't squeezed out of the stories involving those on the periphery. There is a reverence for hockey on show here that's quite lovely to see. The training drills are decent, the dressing room chat is believable, and the big game is full of drama. But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. We're soaring, we're flying. There's not a star in heaven that we can't reach after watching the East High Wildcats take on the West High Whatevers in the big basketball game that determines who is the best at basketball. High School Musical is about a basketball player who is too nervous about what people will think of him if he shows that he can also sing a tune. It's popularity knew no bounds in the late '00s. While there isn't loads of basketball in this one, there is a lot of basketball players who don't like singing or dancing doing a lot of singing and dancing. And that's pretty alright. Joe Kingman is one of America's greatest ever football players to never win the big one. He's also now the proud dad of a daughter he didn't know he had. The Game Plan follows an American football player who is wrestling with both his glittering career and his failure to parent. It's a good, wholesome Disney romp, this one. There isn't loads of football in this, but most of the action is okay. Santiago Muñez, a football prodigy, has a dream: become a footballer. We don't think his end goal was to end up with Newcastle United, but at least he got to meet Alan Shearer at the club gym. Goal! The Dream Begins follows a Mexican superstar football player that gets spotted in America and is given trials at Newcastle by the nicest manager in the entire world. Seriously, Arsene Wenger-alike Erik Dornhelm gives the boy about four chances in this movie. It's ludicrous. There's a lot of oddness in this movie, sure, but it did give us the greatest pronunciation of Fulham ever caught on camera. When it comes to the actual sport, Goal! is all in. Given the time of year, it was only right that we do something a little wintery, something a little sweet, so that's why we decided to take a look at Love On The Slopes. I mean... you can listen for yourself, but... it's not the greatest movie of all time, or the greatest sports movie of all time, but one of us definitely enjoyed it more than the other one. While the sport is thin in this one, there is still some critiquing to be done when it comes to coaching and extreme sports. Yes, it's another Kevin Costner. Will it cause as many arguments as Tin Cup? Well, listen to us discuss For Love Of The Game to find out!... or you could read the next paragraph, I guess. As a love story, it's certainly not as creepy as Tin Cup, but there is some odd miscommunication between the two leads that could've been avoided. Baseball legend Billy Chapel is fond of his girlfriend, but we're not sure he likes her as much as the sport. Handsome Devil is two things: Balls On Film's first rugby movie, and first Irish movie. Actually took a bit longer than we thought it would. This sweet film from 2017 looks at the difficulty of fitting in at school, and ultimately tells the story of how you can be whomever you want to be. While Andrew Scott steals any scene he's in, the message behind Handsome Devil is full of hope. Sure, it's a bit saccharine sometimes, but it's still got a nice message, at the end of the day. Of course, we're not discussing professional sport, but school sport can often have as much pressure for those involved. And those not involved. But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. Remember Goran Ivanišević Wimbledon win in 2001? Well, imagine that was Paul Bettany and it was actually a movie. That's Wimbledon. Of course, that's a little reductive. But... also not a million miles away from what this 2004 film is. A retiring tennis player called Peter Colt is entering tennis' greatest grand slam as a wildcard, but things get a little complicated when he gets into a relationship with American Lizzie Bradbury. While it could've been explored a little further, the most interesting thing about Wimbledon is Colt's internal monologue when he's on the court. It showcases the self-doubt some professional sportspeople deal with when their careers are coming to an end. We all downed a few eggs after watching this one for the first time. Rocky Balboa is the only one that went the distance with Apollo Creed, though. Rocky tells the story of an amateur boxer that's never had a shot at the big time, until now. Spurred on by his girlfriend Adrian, his putrid pal Paulie, and his cantankerous trainer Mickey, Rocky gets a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. While we try to keep these descriptions relatively spoiler-free, it's incredible how well Rocky holds up in 2020... except that one scene in Rocky's flat. That one, not so much. Rocky came out in 1976, when filmmakers didn't have to worry about high definition. Sadly, some of the pulled punches really stand out in 2020, but there's still a lot to love about this movie's depiction of boxing. But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. Lionising sports agents might seem like an odd thing to most, but that's what Cameron Crowe did in 1996 romantic-comedy, Jerry Maguire. After working for a huge corporation for a long time, Jerry Maguire gets fed up and believes the solution to his issues are fewer clients and less money. Only problem is Jerry didn't realise he'd end up with only one client. When you dig a little deeper on Jerry Maguire, you can definitely pick holes in Jerry's attitude towards his mission statement, but the love story is the one that proves way more interesting when you watch it through 2020 eyes. They complete each other, sure, but not for the reasons that you probably remember. There is very little American football in this movie. It's actually staggering how much action we see. But, we do get a much more thorough look at the behind-the-scenes, to be fair. But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. What if Rangers legend Ally McCoist assumed the role of a Celtic legend in a movie starring Academy Award winner Robert Duvall and Batman. A Shot At Glory. That's what. This movie, which came out in 2002, tells the story of scrappy lower-league Scottish football club Kilnockie and their Cinderella run in the Scottish Cup. Also, the manager and the star player don't get on. More also: the manager is the father-in-law of the star player. While its overall message is quite muddled, Ally McCoist puts in a decent performance as... well... Ally McCoist. He's so good at being Ally McCoist he actually outshines Duvall. The football is shot pretty well, and the trademark magic of the cup is captured decently, but there's a sub-plot involving moving the club to Ireland which is absolutely atrocious. It's just baffling. But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. Listen to this episode of Balls On Film to find out what The BOF Boys think of A Shot At Glory. A basketball-playing dog: the game is gone BARKING MAD (thank you). Yes, the film that spawned 86 sequels -- and is somewhat based on a true story -- Air Bud. Air Bud, which first came out in 1997, tells the story of a lonely boy who only wants a friend. Luckily, he finds one in the most talented dog there has ever been, Buddy. While fairly shallow, Air Bud does has a nice message for kids and is definitely one for all the family. The only problem is that there's very little else here. Apart from the talented dog. Thankfully, there aren't thousands in attendance at the games, so that's something... but it's still a basketball-playing dog, so, y'know... it's not exactly realistic, but what were you expecting? Niki Lauda and James Hunt's Formula One rivalry burned brightly for a short period of time in the mid-70s. While Rush dramatises a lot of the truth, it certainly makes for a good movie. Released back in 2013, the Ron Howard-directed film stars Chris Hemsworth as the cocky James Hunt, and Daniel Brühl as the more meticulous Niki Lauda. While the two drivers live very different lives, their attitude towards risk is similar in certain areas... and not so similar in others. It's fair to say that it's not the deepest movie we've discussed on the podcast so far, but that doesn't mean it's not worth talking about. Rush's intertwining of story and sport is one of the best we've seen. The tight shots on drivers, taking the viewer into the inner workings of the car: it's all really well done and it looks terrific. There was a time when Kevin Costner was considered one of the most charming men in all of cinema, but is he able to show that as Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy in this golf flick? Tin Cup was first released back in 1996 and tells the story of a talented golfer (Kevin Costner) that's wasted his talents on a driving range. After Dr. Molly Griswold (Rene Russo) comes to him for golf lessons, he's besotted and decides that winning the US Open will also win the affections of the psychologist. Tin Cup is certainly the most divisive movie we've discussed on the podcast thus far. If you do happen to read this before listening, then we should probably keep it as a surprise, but... yeah, this one makes Andrew and Colm say things like "ah, c'mon" at each other. A lot. One thing that can't be disputed is the depiction of golf in this movie. We're looking at real, elite level sport here, and Tin Cup does showcase that well with its raucous crowds and composed commentators. It even goes into the production truck, which Colm enjoyed. Maybe the most influential ice hockey movie of all time - a team was created off the back of it, to be fair - it's time we talked about The Mighty Ducks. Big-time lawyer Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) is saddled with a kids hockey team after he gets a DUI. He hates them at first, obviously, but by the end he's quacking like a mad man in Mr. Ducksworth's face. While The Mighty Ducks isn't the most complex of stories, Gordon Bombay's arc is a coherent and lovely one. There's a lot of heart in this movie. And there's a lot of really imaginative, creative drills. While maybe not up there with A League of Their Own, the depiction of sport is pretty decent in this. From the unwanted new player, to the pressure of the final, The Mighty Ducks nails quite a lot of the aspects of underage sport.Anyway, we're getting ahead of ourselves. After the success of Dumb & Dumber, the Farrelly Brothers turned their attention to the world of bowling for 1996's Kingpin.Everyone in this film is terrible, pretty much. The cocky villian, Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray), is terrible; con artist Claudia (Vanessa Angel) is terrible; and the "hero" of the piece, Roy Munson (Woody Harrelson), is terrible. Everyone bar, maybe, Ishmael Boorg (Randy Quaid), who wants money to save his community. Kingpin tells the story of how a brush with horribleness can change your life forever. Roy Munson was never the same after meeting Big Ern. He couldn't bowl for a start. But, through meeting Ish and Claud, the trio eventually start to become better people. Sort of. Again, everyone in this is awful! It's a Farrelly Brothers movie, so realism wasn't exactly what they were going for with the depiction of the sport. John Travolta. Stock car racing. In 2019. Doesn't Burning Rubber (or Trading Paint in America) just sound like the best fun?Released on Amazon Prime last year, Burning Rubber is a family drama that uses a few old bangers to tell its story. The competitive son (Toby Sebastian) of a retired racing legend and now team-owner (John Travolta) joins up with a rival (Michael Madsen), because he thinks he'll never win the championship driving for his dad. There isn't an awful lot of subtlety in this movie. Travolta's accent included. Burning Rubber / Trading Paint never gets so bad it's good, though. It doesn't veer into The Room territory or anything like that. Although, again, some phenomenal bits of cinema involving John and the sounds that come from his mouth. We don't claim to be experts in stock car racing, but there's a lot of inconsistencies in how the sport is depicted. Namely the length of the season, the structure of a race weekend. We think they were just making it up as they went along. Anyway, we're getting ahead of ourselves. We can't go out to the ball game because of lockdown, but we can talk about the baseball in A League Of Their Own!The meatiest movie discussed on Balls On Film so far, without question, 1992's A League Of Their Own revolves around a group of women who were integral in setting up the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Specifically, sisters Dottie (Geena Davis) and Kit (Lori Petty). While the movie has the standard washed-up sports star in Jimmy Dugan (the always excellent Tom Hanks), the heart of this story is found in the squabbles of the aforementioned siblings, as well as the bonding that goes on in the Rockford Peaches dressing room. Given that director Penny Marshall wanted ballplayers in her movie, the depiction of the sport is fantastic. In fact, it'll be pretty hard to beat. But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. It's time to shoot some hoops as the Balls on Film boys talk about basketball... and cartoon characters. It's Space Jam!Michael Jordan, recently retired from basketball, finds himself embroiled in a fight between some little aliens and a bunch of Looney Tunes characters. Even though he's a baseball player now, the greatest player in the NBA's history must stick on his Air Jordan's one more time and stop Danny DeVito and the Monstars.Colm and Andrew are like most in their 30s, as they grew up loving the movie when it came out in 1996, but does Space Jam hold up in 2020? The short answer is yes - Bill Murray and Daffy Duck are in it. There are definitely things in here that haven't aged well, that song being the obvious one. Hopefully you'll enjoy a long discussion about the opening scene...The basketball happens in Looney Tunes land, so there's obviously so it's not totally realistic, but seeing Jordan play ball in his pomp is a joy. Slight disclaimer: when this podcast was recorded, Colm and Andrew hadn't seen every episode of The Last Dance docuseries. They have now and it's excellent. On this episode of Balls on Film, Colm Ahern and Andrew Knowles turn their attention to American Football and BoF's first remake: The Longest YardReleased in 2005, The Longest Yard's story revolves around a former football player by the name of Paul Crewe that's ended up in a prison full of heinous guards and quite pleasant inmates. It's Crewe's job to whip the prisoners into shape for a big football game against the guards. Why? Listen to the episode and let us explain. In what will no doubt crop up a lot on Balls on Film, The Longest Yard focuses on a former superstar that needs to adapt in order to thrive. It's a comeback story, essentially. A comeback story full of lazy jokes.Tastes change in 15 years, but what's seen as tasteful in The Longest Yard really hasn't aged well at all. It's hard to even call it a movie of its time when its time wasn't that long ago.The training sequences are alright, though. I mean... they're alright. The game itself, naturally, descends into chaos. And while American football certainly involves a bit of rough and tumble, the final game has a few non-regulation tackles. But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. On the first-ever episode of Balls on Film, Colm Ahern and Andrew Knowles turn their attention to one of Amanda Bynes' last ever movies, She's The Man.Released in 2006, She's The Man tells the story of a girl who poses as her brother in order to get on the school soccer team... except it's not her school's soccer team. It's her brother's school soccer team. Just listen to the episode and let us explain.Sure, it's a teen comedy based on William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, but it's also a film designed to address gender norms and inequalities. It does it well. Sometimes. Then, other times, it shows itself as a movie made fifteen years ago. While a Puskas Award level goal is scored in the film, there are a couple of inaccuracies in the portrayal of the sport. Balls on Film is a podcast about movies about sport. If that’s something you’re interested in, then, make sure you join Colm Ahern and Andrew Knowles every second week as they review some of the best (and some of the worst) sports movies around. From the greatness of Any Given Sunday to the shoddiness of Semi-Pro, they’ll dissect the performances, themes, and the depiction of sport in each movie. In our first episode we’ll be reviewing 2006’s football-themed teen romcom, She’s The Man.
