Bennett Yellin and Peter Farrelly talk about meeting each other in school and immediately connecting over their shared sense of humor. Bennett talks about substance abuse in college, while Peter discusses being a very hard driver at work. You talk about getting very lucky working with Eddie Murphy and David Zucker, and about bringing Bobby Farrelly into the group when they were writing movies together. Peter talks about being extremely loyal, living in Ojai, and never feeling like Los Angeles was really his town. Bennett talks about growing up in Beverly Hills in an Orthodox Jewish family. Peter tells a story about using the wrong knives while staying at Bennett's house because meat is not supposed to touch milk. Peter says he doesn't think Rotten Tomatoes is fair, and he also doesn't think criticism is very helpful. Bennett recently wrote a horror movie, Día de Muertos. Peter is a good audience member and wants everyone to contribute. Bennett knew everything about movies, while Peter knew almost nothing about them. Peter also has a very happy crew. Bio: -Peter John Farrelly (born December 17, 1956) is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and novelist. Along with his brother Bobby, the Farrelly brothers are best known for directing and producing quirky and romantic comedy films such as Dumb and Dumber, Shallow Hal, Me, Myself and Irene, There's Something About Mary, and the 2007 remake of The Heartbreak Kid. Farrelly solo-directed and co-wrote the comedy-drama Green Book (2018), which won the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018, the Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay, and the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. He has been married to Melinda Farrelly since December 31, 1996. They have two children. -Born and raised in Los Angeles, Bennett received his B.A. in Fiction from U.C.L.A. Still not ready to enter the real world, he enrolled at UMass in Amherst for an M.F.A. in fiction. It was there — on the first day of school — that he met and befriended Peter Farrelly. On a lark, they tried writing a comedy together and this spec script ultimately got into the hands of Eddie Murphy and the Zucker Brothers, creators of Airplane and The Naked Gun. Both Murphy and the Zuckers asked the duo to write movies for them, and their career was off and running. Yellin wrote exclusively with Peter for years until they asked his brother Bobby to join them. The three went on to write a number of unproduced features together until they created Dumb and Dumber in 1994 and reunited in 2014 to co-write the official sequel chronicling the further idiotic adventures of Harry and Lloyd, Dumb and Dumber To. In 2007, the Farrelly Brothers branched out on their own and Yellin partnered with James Robert Johnson to create a professional writing duo that has endured for sixteen years. Among the plethora of projects they've tackled during their career — some produced, others not — the two have co-written Let's Scare Jessica to Death for Paramount Pictures, the Fox situation comedy Unhitched, the direct-to-DVD thriller Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead, Paramount Pictures' Hotel For Dogs 2, the Anchor Bay action-thriller In the Blood with Gina Carano, the 20th Century Fox family film, Santa's Little Helper, and the Warner Brothers re-boot of the Police Academy series, Police Academy: Takin' it to the Streets. More recently, Yellin and Johnston have co-written a live action family stage show adaptation of the hugely popular Angry Birds IP, and their original supernatural thriller Dia de Muertos has recently completed filming and is set to be released in 2026. We've got a bit of a musical legend in the house today for the guestmix! Here's some words from the man himself Lately I've been getting back into playing a lot more vinyl-only sets after spending the last few years deep in film scoring and studio work. I will be getting back out playing more shows this year, so this mix felt like a good snapshot of where my head is at musically right now. I've also been putting a lot of energy into my label PRONTO, which has become a home for music from artists and friends like Marcellus Pittman, Osunlade, Rick Wade, Art Of Tones, Oliver Dollar and Make A Dance. I'm currently working on a new project with Osunlade called Nomadics that I'm really excited about. Outside the club world, I've had music in the new Jackass film and the latest Farrelly Brothers movie, plus I recently finished scoring a new feature starring Ron Perlman and Theo Rossi. Before all of that I spent years making music for Grand Theft Auto which was honestly one of the wildest chapters of my career. This mix is just a bunch of records I love, Chicago roots, deep house, disco, weird late-night stuff and a few curveballs. I also recently got to remix Joe Smooth's “Promised Land” for DJ International, which was a pretty surreal full-circle moment for a kid originally from Chicago. Hope you enjoy it. James @jamescurd

First, we will talk about Tomcats, written and directed by Gregory Poirier. Next, we will talk about Shallow Hal, written by Sean Moynihan and the Farrelly Brothers and directed by the Farrelly Brothers.Along the way, we talk musicals we walked out of, The Royal Tenenbaums, lots of Farrelly Brothers, Dakota Fanning, Monkeybone, lazy filmmaking, and lots and lots of awful men. 200 EPISODES!! It's been a long time coming, but we finally made it! 200 episodes of the Dissect That Film Podcast! What a better way to celebrate a massive milestone than by jumping into a genre we don't play around in too often, comedy. More specifically, sports comedy. This week, we look at the Farrelly Brothers film that came after there massive hit Dumb and Dumber, 1996's KINGPIN. With the comedy chops of Woody Harrelson and Randy Quaid, it shows the unorthodox partnership of a washed up, one handed former pro bowler and a Amish prodigy. What else needs to be said? Well I guess we should ask, is it underrated? Why did it fail at the box office? Why don't these movies exist anymore? Lets try to answer those and more as we celebrate this massive achievement. There's Something About Mary is a hilariously offbeat romantic comedy from the minds of the Farrelly Brothers that pushed the boundaries of humor in the late ‘90s and became an instant classic. The story follows Ted Stroehmann (Ben Stiller), a lovable but perpetually unlucky-in-love guy who hasn't gotten over his high school crush, Mary Jensen (Cameron Diaz). After a disastrously awkward prom night incident, Ted hires a shady private investigator (played by Matt Dillon) years later to track Mary down—only to find that he's not the only one trying to win her heart. As romantic rivals pile up and outrageous situations unfold—including a dog fight, a fish-hooked eyelid, and one very infamous hair gel scene—There's Something About Mary delivers a mix of sweet romance, slapstick chaos, and unforgettable shock comedy. Powered by standout performances, a quirky soundtrack, and the Farrellys' signature gross-out humor, the film became a cultural phenomenon, grossing over $369 million worldwide on a $23 million budget.Whether you're watching it for the first time or reliving the laughs, There's Something About Mary remains one of the boldest and most memorable comedies of its era.If you are new to the podcast then please consider following us on the platform that you love, we can be found most anywhere that you listen to your favorite podcasts. Rhode Island's multi-platinum John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band, will be celebrating 50+ years in the business with the release of "Sound of Waves," a new 13 song album, their first in 37 years. In 1982, John Cafferty was commissioned to write and perform the soundtrack for a film that turned out to be "Eddie and the Cruisers,' a rock cult classic with a triple platinum soundtrack. Cafferty's soulful, raspy voice propelled the movie's theme "On the Dark Side" to # 1 on the Billboard Rock charts and the MTV video charts, while the movie's second hit "Tender Years" rose into the Top 10 of the Billboard AC charts. Today John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band continue to tour around the world. That tour will bring them to NYC for an album release concert at the Cutting Room on Thursday, April 10th, the same date as the album release, from Moonstone Music. According to Cafferty, the new album almost didn't happen. After almost four decades of not writing and recording new music, he was encouraged by Bruce Springsteen to do it again. Over the years, Cafferty and company have jammed on stage with many of the greats of rock and roll, including Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Dion, and opened on tour with the Beach Boys, Foreigner, and Bryan Adams. Starting May 28th, Cafferty joins Rick Springfield on his "I Want My 80s Tour" for selected dates, along with John Waite and Wang Chung."The 'Sound of Waves' album is a celebration of a lifetime legacy as musicians and 50+ years as a band. The songs are newly written with a respectful reflection of colors from an era of music's diverse history and the precious life moments and loving relationships that have served as our hearts' inspiration," said Cafferty. The title track from the group's 1985 album, "Tough All Over" became their second # 1 on the Billboard Rock Charts and the song "C-I-T-Y" reached the Billboard Top 20. Over the years, John has placed 35 songs in major motion pictures. They included Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky "IV," and "Cobra." The Farrelly Brothers hit films "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber Too," & Eddie and the Cruisers I and II. The lead single from the group's upcoming album is "Day In the Sun," which was spotlighted in Peter Farrelly's film "Rick Stanicky." Here's a video link of a live performance: Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1xHCR8BDus All songs on the new release were written by Cafferty. Hello and welcome back to The Dana Gould Hour. Your brief audio respite from the world's worst reality show, reality. Samm Deighan is here. She is a film historian and author and has written such books as The Legacy Of World War 2 in European Art House Cinema and a study of Fritz Lang's child murder romp M. Her new book, written with Andrew Nette is entitled Revolution In 35 MM, Political Violence And Resistance In Cinema, From The Art House To The Grindhouse 1960 to 1990. It covers everything from The Battle Of Algiers to Coffin Joe to Zabriskie Point. Harry Medved and Bennet Yellin are here. Harry Medved wrote the book the 50 Worst Movies of All Time when he was in high school! He was 15 when he wrote that book. And that was in the late 70's before VHS tapes. He also wrote, with his brother Michael, the Golden Turkey Awards, which, as you know, is what helped put Ed Wood back on the map in the mid-eighties. He has a series now on PBS called Locationland, where he takes audiences on a tour of famous film locations, this was back when films had locations, as opposed to standing in front of a green screen at a warehouse in Atlanta. I recently had the pleasure of joining Harry on a tour of the locations for a little film you may have heard me talk about, Plan 9 from Outer Space. Bennet Yellin is an author and screenwriter, he's written, with the Farrelly Brothers, There's Something About Mary, Dumb And Dumber, Dumb And Dumber Two. Bennet and Harry have been friends for eons and they are here to talk bad movies, good movies and Ed Wood movies which are, of course, an alchemic mixture of the two. True Tales From Weirdsville tells the tale of the place both wonderful and strange, Twin Peaks. Like everyone else I was super bummed out by the passing of David Lynch in January. I think it was a combination of things. The election, we were in the middle of these catastrophic fires and then, just when things couldn't get worse, they did. As much as I love David Lynch and his work, and have back to…I guess Blue Velvet, what he stood for meant more to me than any particular film or television show or what have you. He was uncompromising in his vision, you could like it or not. That wasn't the point. That's a rare thing these days, when studios and networks seem to be operating under the belief that the only audience worth getting is everyone alive, and anything less is a failure. Twin Peaks, it's origins, success, fall from grace and resurrection is a terrific microcosm of how Lynch's refusal to compromise created something far greater than the sum of it's parts, it flew against convention, challenged audiences. In the case of Fire Walk With Me, it really challenged audiences. But in every instance, time has proven Lynch's instincts were right, so we're going to do a two, possibly three part series on Lynch's career through the lens of Twin Peaks. And NOW, it's on to our filthy business. https://DanaGould.com

I suppose we should expect to get a few real stinkers every year, especially around the holidays, but that doesn't take the sting of having to suffer through them. After years of solo efforts (some successful, others not so much) the Farrelly Brothers reunite for Dear Santa, a comedy of errors about a dyslexic boy who accidentally addresses a letter to Satan instead of Santa.
The filmmaking duo Peter and Bobby Farrelly are here to discuss the making of their new film Dear Santa starring Jack Black! The comedy legends share stories from the making of their iconic films such as "Dumb and Dumber" and "There's Something About Mary."Peter Farrelly tells us why his Best Picture-winning film Green Book was the easiest film he's ever made compared to comedy, how the brothers decided who would get directing credit for "Dumb and Dumber," their parents visiting the set during Jeff Daniels' toilet scene and more.ReelBlend PremiumSign up for a bi-weekly newsletter from Sean, and ad-free episodes at bit.ly/reelblendpremium.ReelBlend on YouTubeBe sure to subscribe to ReelBlend on YouTube (YouTube.com/ReelBlendPodcast) for full episodes of the show in video form.Follow The ShowReelBlend - @ReelBlendSean - @Sean_OConnellJake - @JakesTakesKevin - @KevinMcCarthyTVGabe - @gabeKovacsOur Sponsors:* Check out Rosetta Stone and use my code TODAY for a great deal: https://www.rosettastone.comSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reelblend/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Send us a textPut on your bowling shoes, grab your ball, and roll right into this one. We're talking Kingpin from 1996! Starring Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid, Bill Murray, and Vanessa Angel, the second Farrelly Brothers movie may have been a gutter ball in theaters, but it was a strike to us. There's a lot to like, most notably an all-time comedic performance from Bill Murray. A road trip movie with an odd couple relationship, Kingpin reminded us of a host of other similar movies. Wanna hear the most annoying sound in the World? Then listen to us recite lines from Dumb & Dumber for an hour... We also discuss Jim Carrey's genius, the hits & misses of the Farrelly Brothers, Austin Butler(?), horrific deleted scenes and much more. Thanks for listening!

Our exit today has us looking at the finest police force in the world, the Rhode Island State Police. This week, we are talking about Me, Myself and Irene, reuniting The Farrelly Brothers with Jim Carrey. Along the way, we spend a lot of time talking about liking parts of a movie that is fundamentally wrong in its worldview. Plus, we discuss the meteoric rise of both Carrey and co-star Renee Zellweger, a cast full of legendary actors on the cusp of stardom, another wonderful Anthony Anderson performance, 1930s Best Actor races, our excitement for Megalopolis, and the late Gene Siskel's love for Kingpin. Here's a short teaser of our brand new Patreon-exclusive episode of Uncut Gems Tie-ins, a monthly series where we take a classic movie and connect it to a film discussed on our main show. In this podcast we are tying into our August conversations about movies Ben Stiller made in 1998 with a chat about his arguably biggest hit of the time, There's Something About Mary. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about where exactly the Farrelly Brothers fit in the landscape of comedy, how they apply genital-based humour to classic concepts, and how the movie aged over the following decades. We also talk about Cameron Diaz becoming the biggest star of her time, Ben Stiller's normie energy, Matt Dillon's comedic chops and just how much comedy one can extract out of a dog being punted out the window. Have you ever wondered what happens when a sequel tries too hard to replicate its predecessor's magic? Join us as we explore the curious case of "Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd" and dissect what went wrong in this prequel to a beloved comedy classic. Tony kicks off with the fascinating story behind why he chose this movie, setting the stage for a deep dive into the film's casting choices, including Eric Christian Olsen's valiant yet hollow attempt at emulating Jim Carrey's iconic character. We touch on the emotional beats that went missing and the pivotal creative decisions, such as the Farrelly Brothers' refusal to participate and the film landing in the hands of the "Jack Frost" director. We scrutinize some of the film's most absurd plot points, like Eugene Levy and Sherry Oteri's cartoonish villainy and their impractical school scam. Laugh with us as we recount the peculiar dinner at Harry's mom's house and the chaotic construction of a George Washington float, while lamenting the lack of grounded reality and coherent narrative that made the original so successful. From unnecessary birth scenes to awkward makeout sessions with jet packs, we critique the film's inconsistent comedic attempts and disjointed scenes, all while reflecting on broader comedic themes and the challenges of engaging an audience. To top it off, we highlight the talents of performers like Martin Short and recommend some alternatives, including Eric Christian Olsen's "Fired Up." Stay tuned for our musings on DVD digitization and a sneak peek into our upcoming 200th milestone episode featuring the infamous Garbage Pail Kids movie. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a casual viewer, this episode promises to give you an entertaining and critical perspective on a comedy that missed its mark.Written lovingly with AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

We're shutting down another year at PCY. Capping off our 2023 and our month of 1998 is the classic comedy There's Something About Mary. Directed by the Farrelly Brothers and starring Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz, Matt Damon, Chris Elliot, and more this film was a juggernaut that took the country by storm. We break down every hilarious moment for you.For our draft we considered Cameron Diaz, but did you know realize she basically retired from acting almost 10 years ago? We discuss that and then draft the best of Ben Stiller instead. His IMDB page is overwhelming. HO HO HO! This episode hosted by Santa Claus! Jesus, God, and the Holy Ghost join Santa, mad with power, to speculate about Trump's arrest, TUMS antiacid overdoses, Morgan Freeman, Trump calling DeSantis names, and if Jesus lives inside Trump. On 'Free Play/Recess,' Santa talks about whatever he wants, like reindeer performance reviews, nepotism, his new book tour, and Santa's village. On 'Ask God,' you'll get a look inside how Santa scores naughty and nice children, whether God will curse the GOP, did God send the giant seaweed blob to attack Florida, will Jesus get a tattoo, and will God boff Christopher Walken. On 'JFC LOL,' the gang discusses no one thanking God for their Oscar wins. On 'The Santa Show!' Jack Black and the Farrelly Brothers' movie 'Dear Santa' is reviewed months before its release.
