This week we go inside Bill Murray's body for this lesser known Farrelly Brothers flick. Did you know this movie helped create the Buffalo wing festival? Is Shane basically Matilda? Does Thrax really think he's one of a kind? We discuss nasty candy and have fun facts all around..check it out now!
Our exit today has us realizing that our one vice is that we're too nice. This week, we are looking at a double feature of films of men behaving badly and "learning to be better people." First, we will talk about Tomcats, written and directed by Gregory Poirier. Next, we will talk about Shallow Hal, written by Sean Moynihan and the Farrelly Brothers and directed by the Farrelly Brothers.Along the way, we talk musicals we walked out of, The Royal Tenenbaums, lots of Farrelly Brothers, Dakota Fanning, Monkeybone, lazy filmmaking, and lots and lots of awful men. But our final reviews may surprise you a little!Thememusic by Jonworthymusic.Powered by RiversideFM.CFF Films with Ross and friends.Movies We've Covered on the Show on Letterboxd.Movies Recommended on the Show on Letterboxd.
200 EPISODES!! It's been a long time coming, but we finally made it! 200 episodes of the Dissect That Film Podcast! What a better way to celebrate a massive milestone than by jumping into a genre we don't play around in too often, comedy. More specifically, sports comedy. This week, we look at the Farrelly Brothers film that came after there massive hit Dumb and Dumber, 1996's KINGPIN. With the comedy chops of Woody Harrelson and Randy Quaid, it shows the unorthodox partnership of a washed up, one handed former pro bowler and a Amish prodigy. What else needs to be said? Well I guess we should ask, is it underrated? Why did it fail at the box office? Why don't these movies exist anymore? Lets try to answer those and more as we celebrate this massive achievement. There's Something About Mary is a hilariously offbeat romantic comedy from the minds of the Farrelly Brothers that pushed the boundaries of humor in the late ‘90s and became an instant classic. The story follows Ted Stroehmann (Ben Stiller), a lovable but perpetually unlucky-in-love guy who hasn't gotten over his high school crush, Mary Jensen (Cameron Diaz). After a disastrously awkward prom night incident, Ted hires a shady private investigator (played by Matt Dillon) years later to track Mary down—only to find that he's not the only one trying to win her heart. As romantic rivals pile up and outrageous situations unfold—including a dog fight, a fish-hooked eyelid, and one very infamous hair gel scene—There's Something About Mary delivers a mix of sweet romance, slapstick chaos, and unforgettable shock comedy. Powered by standout performances, a quirky soundtrack, and the Farrellys' signature gross-out humor, the film became a cultural phenomenon, grossing over $369 million worldwide on a $23 million budget.Whether you're watching it for the first time or reliving the laughs, There's Something About Mary remains one of the boldest and most memorable comedies of its era.If you are new to the podcast then please consider following us on the platform that you love, we can be found most anywhere that you listen to your favorite podcasts. Rhode Island's multi-platinum John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band, will be celebrating 50+ years in the business with the release of "Sound of Waves," a new 13 song album, their first in 37 years. In 1982, John Cafferty was commissioned to write and perform the soundtrack for a film that turned out to be "Eddie and the Cruisers,' a rock cult classic with a triple platinum soundtrack. Cafferty's soulful, raspy voice propelled the movie's theme "On the Dark Side" to # 1 on the Billboard Rock charts and the MTV video charts, while the movie's second hit "Tender Years" rose into the Top 10 of the Billboard AC charts. Today John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band continue to tour around the world. That tour will bring them to NYC for an album release concert at the Cutting Room on Thursday, April 10th, the same date as the album release, from Moonstone Music. According to Cafferty, the new album almost didn't happen. After almost four decades of not writing and recording new music, he was encouraged by Bruce Springsteen to do it again. Over the years, Cafferty and company have jammed on stage with many of the greats of rock and roll, including Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Dion, and opened on tour with the Beach Boys, Foreigner, and Bryan Adams. Starting May 28th, Cafferty joins Rick Springfield on his "I Want My 80s Tour" for selected dates, along with John Waite and Wang Chung."The 'Sound of Waves' album is a celebration of a lifetime legacy as musicians and 50+ years as a band. The songs are newly written with a respectful reflection of colors from an era of music's diverse history and the precious life moments and loving relationships that have served as our hearts' inspiration," said Cafferty. The title track from the group's 1985 album, "Tough All Over" became their second # 1 on the Billboard Rock Charts and the song "C-I-T-Y" reached the Billboard Top 20. Over the years, John has placed 35 songs in major motion pictures. They included Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky "IV," and "Cobra." The Farrelly Brothers hit films "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber Too," & Eddie and the Cruisers I and II. The lead single from the group's upcoming album is "Day In the Sun," which was spotlighted in Peter Farrelly's film "Rick Stanicky." Here's a video link of a live performance: Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1xHCR8BDus All songs on the new release were written by Cafferty. The Rhode Island rockers put out their first "Greatest Hits" album in 2022 on Iconoclassic Records. In addition to band founder Cafferty, two original members remain in the group. Hello and welcome back to The Dana Gould Hour. Your brief audio respite from the world's worst reality show, reality. Samm Deighan is here. She is a film historian and author and has written such books as The Legacy Of World War 2 in European Art House Cinema and a study of Fritz Lang's child murder romp M. Her new book, written with Andrew Nette is entitled Revolution In 35 MM, Political Violence And Resistance In Cinema, From The Art House To The Grindhouse 1960 to 1990. It covers everything from The Battle Of Algiers to Coffin Joe to Zabriskie Point. Harry Medved and Bennet Yellin are here. Harry Medved wrote the book the 50 Worst Movies of All Time when he was in high school! He was 15 when he wrote that book. And that was in the late 70's before VHS tapes. He also wrote, with his brother Michael, the Golden Turkey Awards, which, as you know, is what helped put Ed Wood back on the map in the mid-eighties. He has a series now on PBS called Locationland, where he takes audiences on a tour of famous film locations, this was back when films had locations, as opposed to standing in front of a green screen at a warehouse in Atlanta. I recently had the pleasure of joining Harry on a tour of the locations for a little film you may have heard me talk about, Plan 9 from Outer Space. Bennet Yellin is an author and screenwriter, he's written, with the Farrelly Brothers, There's Something About Mary, Dumb And Dumber, Dumb And Dumber Two. Bennet and Harry have been friends for eons and they are here to talk bad movies, good movies and Ed Wood movies which are, of course, an alchemic mixture of the two. True Tales From Weirdsville tells the tale of the place both wonderful and strange, Twin Peaks. Like everyone else I was super bummed out by the passing of David Lynch in January. I think it was a combination of things. The election, we were in the middle of these catastrophic fires and then, just when things couldn't get worse, they did. As much as I love David Lynch and his work, and have back to…I guess Blue Velvet, what he stood for meant more to me than any particular film or television show or what have you. He was uncompromising in his vision, you could like it or not. That wasn't the point. That's a rare thing these days, when studios and networks seem to be operating under the belief that the only audience worth getting is everyone alive, and anything less is a failure. Twin Peaks, it's origins, success, fall from grace and resurrection is a terrific microcosm of how Lynch's refusal to compromise created something far greater than the sum of it's parts, it flew against convention, challenged audiences. In the case of Fire Walk With Me, it really challenged audiences. But in every instance, time has proven Lynch's instincts were right, so we're going to do a two, possibly three part series on Lynch's career through the lens of Twin Peaks. And NOW, it's on to our filthy business. https://DanaGould.com

I suppose we should expect to get a few real stinkers every year, especially around the holidays, but that doesn't take the sting of having to suffer through them. Our exit today has us looking at the finest police force in the world, the Rhode Island State Police. This week, we are talking about Me, Myself and Irene, reuniting The Farrelly Brothers with Jim Carrey. Along the way, we spend a lot of time talking about liking parts of a movie that is fundamentally wrong in its worldview. Plus, we discuss the meteoric rise of both Carrey and co-star Renee Zellweger, a cast full of legendary actors on the cusp of stardom, another wonderful Anthony Anderson performance, 1930s Best Actor races, our excitement for Megalopolis, and the late Gene Siskel's love for Kingpin. Little bit of a rough patch here in 1999, as we enter into September. We've got a stoner-coming-of-age comedy from the Farrelly Brothers, that just doesn't land as well as one would expect it to. Shane discusses the things he likes about the film, as well as his disappointment. We also have a ridiculously stupid wannabe action film, that actually has a great cast wasted on a terrible script.
Up next for review in movie challenge 6, aka the season of Bob, is "There's Something About Mary", a 1998 romantic comedy starring Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller, and Matt Dillon. High school dork Ted (Ben Stiller) blows his big shot with Mary (Cameron Diaz) due to a wardrobe malfunction on prom night. Years later, he hires a private detective Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to find her. However, Pat quickly falls in love with Mary and the two men are now competing for Mary's affection. Have you ever wondered what happens when a sequel tries too hard to replicate its predecessor's magic? Join us as we explore the curious case of "Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd" and dissect what went wrong in this prequel to a beloved comedy classic. Tony kicks off with the fascinating story behind why he chose this movie, setting the stage for a deep dive into the film's casting choices, including Eric Christian Olsen's valiant yet hollow attempt at emulating Jim Carrey's iconic character. We touch on the emotional beats that went missing and the pivotal creative decisions, such as the Farrelly Brothers' refusal to participate and the film landing in the hands of the "Jack Frost" director. We scrutinize some of the film's most absurd plot points, like Eugene Levy and Sherry Oteri's cartoonish villainy and their impractical school scam. Laugh with us as we recount the peculiar dinner at Harry's mom's house and the chaotic construction of a George Washington float, while lamenting the lack of grounded reality and coherent narrative that made the original so successful. From unnecessary birth scenes to awkward makeout sessions with jet packs, we critique the film's inconsistent comedic attempts and disjointed scenes, all while reflecting on broader comedic themes and the challenges of engaging an audience. To top it off, we highlight the talents of performers like Martin Short and recommend some alternatives, including Eric Christian Olsen's "Fired Up." This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the final episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we have been pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. We skip ahead to the year 2003 for the final bout, where the Coen Brothers took a crack at directing a writer-for-hire script, the rom-com INTOLERABLE CRUELTY, and the Farrelly Brothers got stuck on brotherhood with the conjoined twin comedy STUCK ON YOU. With Intolerable Cruelty the Coens teamed back up with George Clooney, who plays hot shot divorce attorney Miles Massey. Massey is known for his patented pre-nuptial agreement, that is known to be impenetrable. After assisting a cheating husband, millionaire Rex Rexroth (Edward Herrmann), in preventing his wife Marilynn (Catherine Zeta Jones) from getting any of her husband's wealth in their divorce, Miles finds himself a victim of a sophisticated revenge plot orchestrated by Marilynn. The only problem is, Miles falls for Marilynn, clouding his vision, and opening him up to her wrath. It's not quite the cutting film that we're used to from the Coens, but it has some sweet moments, great chemistry from the leads, and some really great and shocking moments. Is it enough to take down the Farrellys? It's a tough order this month, as the Farrellys churned out one of their low-key best films in 2003 with Stuck On You. Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear star as conjoined twins Bob and Walt Tenor, who live in Martha's Vineyard. Bob is into sports and loves the simple life of cooking food at their restaurant in Massachusetts. Walt on the other hand is hoping to become a big time actor. The brothers venture out to Hollywood to allow Walt a chance at fame, when they are discovered by Cher (you know, Cher), who casts Walt to be the co-star in her new TV show – hoping that the network will pull the plug on the show. However, Walt turns out to be a huge hit, causing the brothers to consider their future stuck together. The film is riddled with cameos, such as Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Cameron Diaz, Luke Wilson Frankie Muniz and even JESSE VENTURA!!! You may think we are joking when saying it's one of their best films, but this truly is a sweet, funny, and underrated film from the Farrellys. Give it a go if you don't believe us. This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the penultimate episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we are pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, we hit the road in the year 2000, with two films featuring people looking to clear their name. It's Joel & Ethan Coen's folk musical comedy O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? and Peter & Bobby Farrelly's dark comedy ME, MYSELF & IRENE. In O Brother, Where Art Thou?, George Clooney stars as Ulysses Everett McGill, a criminal who convinces two fellow convicts (Tim Blake Nelson and John Turturro) to break out of prison to seek treasure he left buried from a previous job. Turns out he really just wants to stop his wife (Holly Hunter) from getting remarried. Along their journey, they meet a young black musician who sold his soul to the devil, and cut a hit record together. They also meet a cyclops, sirens, and countless others in this unique adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. With more brilliant cinematography from Roger Deakins, a tremendous soundtrack featuring loads of old folk, gospel, and bluegrass standards, and quality performances all around, this is another winner for Joel and Ethan Coen. Can they ever be stopped? The Farrelly Brothers can attempt to do so with their road comedy Me, Myself & Irene, starring Jim Carrey in his first film with the Farrelly's since Dumb and Dumber. Carrey, who was just coming off starring in back-to-back serious roles (The Truman Show and Man on the Moon) returned to the gross-out comedy as Charlie Baileygates, a Rhode Island state trooper who develops a split personality. Charlie must escort Irene (Renée Zellweger) to New York, where she is wanted for hit-and-run. The pair are then forced to go on the lam to avoid Irene's mafia-connected ex-boyfriend, whilst Charlie is also trying to suppress his new alter-ego, Hank. Some of this one holds up, but it is pretty much relying on a very wrongfully depicted mental illness – so take that for what you will. Is it enough to topple the sweet tunes of O Brother? We'll let you decide...Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? Tune in to find out...If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the 3rd episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we are pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, it's all about bowling! For some reason, both of these sets of brothers made bowling movies – and both of them performed pretty badly on release, only to become cult classics. So, we'll be talking about Joel & Ethan Coen's 1998 neo-noir comedy THE BIG LEBOWSKI, and Peter & Bobby Farrelly's 1996 sports comedy, KINGPIN. Which is the better bowling movie? In The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges shines in a career role as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski in a tale of mistaken identity, deceitfulness, severed toes, nihilists, White Russians and lots of bowling. After his rug get soiled by a couple of guys looking for money from a millionaire with the same name, The Dude falls down a rabbit hole that feels straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel. This film is damn near perfect. It's funny, has a great story, stellar performances with a supporting cast boasting John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore and John Turturro, a kick ass soundtrack and some insanely good cinematography from Roger Deakins. The Dude Abides. But is it a better bowling movie than Kingpin? Woody Harrelson plays Roy Munson, a young bowler who is just about to make it big, before his rival, Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray doing Bill Murray shit) tricks him into doing con games, which results in Roy's bowling hand getting destroyed. Years later, Roy is an alcoholic with a hook for a hand and no prospects, before he stumbles upon Ishmael (Randy Quaid), a promising young Amish man that Roy attempts to take to the top of the bowling world. It's more of what you expect from the Farrelly's, with some gross out humour, fun 90s soundtracks, and some hit or miss elements. But, it's pretty much the Farrelly's most underrated, and potentially one of their better titles. And, it actually is more about bowling than The Big Lebowksi, it just may look as nice. I mean, Deakins, man...Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? Tune in to find out...If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! Jed Bookout joins the pod to discuss A24's early breakout hit of 2024, Love Lies Bleeding: a sapphic, bodybuilding, ultra-violent fever dream of a movie. Set in a scuzzy and sordid 1989 New Mexico setting, and tracking a pair of lesbians turned serial killers by necessity, Love Lies Bleeding is a tonal tour de force evoking the likes of Paul Schrader, Lynne Ramsey, & David Cronenberg. Perhaps the best synopsis of her sophomore entry: Imagine Nicolas WInding Refn directing a Coen Bros script. Over the course of the episode, we also discuss Rose Glass' promising future, Kristen Stewart's best career performances, the film's moral neutrality toward ‘roid rage and its juxtapositions between the seedy and the sultry, the unorthodox structural brilliance of Vox Lox, the underrated sub-genre of vagabonds going on vacations in hell (namely, Spring), and the many influences of Love Lies Bleeding's neo-noirish, black comedy beats. And yes, we make sure the conversation veers podcast relevant by intermittently debating whether it could be considered a quasi-sports movie, likening it to everything from Black Swan to The Wrestler (although, upon further reflection, Stallone's arm-wrestling masterpiece Over the Top or the Farrelly Brothers' bowling romp Kingpin may serve as better reference points). Enjoy!

This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's Week 2 of the new miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we'll once a month be pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, we'll be looking at two of the biggest films from each brother duo, with Joel and Ethan Coen's Academy Award-winning film from 1996, FARGO, vs Peter and Bobby Farrelly's smash hit from 1998, THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY (we decided to jump ahead to 1998 for Farrelly's so we could pit 1996's Kingpin vs 1998's The Big Lebowski – you know... bowling, dude!)In Fargo, Frances McDormand shines as a pregnant police officer attempting to solve three murders in her jurisdiction, that all lead back to William H. Macy – a car salesman who hires two criminals (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare) to kidnap his wife for ransom money. It stands as the Coen Brothers' signature film, that inspired a television, and introduced the world to the endearing Minnesota accent. With a stellar cast, incredible performances, top-notch writing and direction, and brilliant cinematography, it'd be hard for most films to beat it.So, how did There's Something About Mary compare? Ben Stiller plays a guy who's looking for the girl that got away – the simply perfect, Mary, played by Cameron Diaz in her breakthrough role. When he hires a private investigator (Matt Dillion) to track her down, the investigator also falls for Mary, leading to a silly love triangle. We've got balls being zipped up in trousers, dogs being drugged, NFL Superstars getting tackled by normal men playing intellectually challenged men, and old lady boobs. It's a Farrelly Brothers film... At least there is the wonderful Jonathan Richman to sing us through the film.Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? 00:00 - 08:40 - Intro / GBV vs Cannes 08:40 - 1:02:09 - Stuck on You On today's clip, we're going back to our favorite pair of filmmakers, the Farrelly Brothers, for their 2003 masterpiece Stuck on You. this is probably their best attempt at dramatic filmmaking that happens to be very funny, an all-time underrated film.
This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, we present a brand-new miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we'll once a month be pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. Both sets of brothers saw some of their best films come out between 1994 - 2003, and we'll be taking a look into this small window of time to see who is the best of the brother filmmakers (I mean, we know who it is... it's just for fun. You know... for kids?)In the debut episode, we'll be looking at two films from 1994, with Joel and Ethan Coen's first big budget studio film, THE HUDSUCKER PROXY, vs Peter and Bobby Farrelly's debut feature, DUMB & DUMBER.Tim Robbins, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Paul Newman lead the Coen's The Hudsucker Proxy, about a mailroom clerk who is plucked from obscurity to be the president of a major corporation in order for the scheming board to take over full control of the company's stock. A throwback to the screwball comedies of the 30s and 40s, the film failed at the box office, but became a big cult hit. But, is the fast-talking comedy enough to take on the Farrelly's breakout first feature? In Dumb & Dumber, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are two moronic buddies who take a briefcase across the country to return it to a woman they think lost it, getting mixed up in a kidnapping plot and a whole load of other shenanigans. It's incredibly dumb, but still packs in plenty of laughs 30 years later. The film was the crowning achievement in Jim Carrey's massive run of 1994 (which also saw him star in Ace Ventura and The Mask) that would see him become one of the biggest stars of the 90s. Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? Tune in to find out...If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review!
