Dirt Track Racing is a discipline of motorsport held on clay or dirt surfaced oval race tracks often used for thoroughbred horse racing. Dirt track racing started in the United States before World War I and became widespread during the 1920s and 1930s using both automobiles and motorcycles. Two different types of race cars dominate — open wheel racers in the Northeast & West and stock cars in the Midwest & South. John Travolta. Stock car racing. In 2019. Doesn't Burning Rubber (or Trading Paint in America) just sound like the best fun?Released on Amazon Prime last year, Burning Rubber is a family drama that uses a few old bangers to tell its story. The competitive son (Toby Sebastian) of a retired racing legend and now team-owner (John Travolta) joins up with a rival (Michael Madsen), because he thinks he'll never win the championship driving for his dad.There isn't an awful lot of subtlety in this movie. Travolta's accent included. Burning Rubber / Trading Paint never gets so bad it's good, though. It doesn't veer into The Room territory or anything like that. Although, again, some phenomenal bits of cinema involving John and the sounds that come from his mouth.We don't claim to be experts in stock car racing, but there's a lot of inconsistencies in how the sport is depicted. Namely the length of the season, the structure of a race weekend. We think they were just making it up as they went along. Anyway, we're getting ahead of ourselves. From the imagination of the guy that brought us Scientology comes a film, so awful, I actually fell asleep.  I don't fall asleep during movies ever.  If you thought that John Travolta was terrible in Trading Paint you haven't seen him in Battlefield Earth.  This movie makes Home Alone 3 look like Home Alone.

If you've ever wanted to hear two people who have known each other their whole lives rip on a shitty John Travolta racing movie then look no further.  On this episode I went home to the farm and made my best friend watch this horrible piece of film trash.  John Travolta sucks, I can't understand a word of what Michael Madsen throughout this entire film, and what happened with the mustang?!?!  Confused yet?  You should be. 

The Poison Rose is now the 5th straight John Travolta movie to receive 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. After seeing Trading Paint (2019) earlier this year we promised ourselves we would only see the next Travolta movie if got 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Well it did. Even with co-stars Morgan Freeman, Famke Janssen, and Brendan Fraser, the movie couldn’t get a single positive review. It features a breakout performance from Travolta’s daughter Ella Bleu Travolta. The film doesn’t have a plot summary on Wikipedia and I can’t remember what it was about but listen to our podcast if you want to learn about the continuing adventures of John Travolta and The Poison Rose!

On this episode of “The Autoweek Podcast,” host Rory Carroll, Jake Lingeman and Wesley Wren give an honest assessment of John Travolta’s latest epic: “Trading Paint.” For those unaware of this movie (Ed note: I envy you), it’s a tale of turmoil and triumph on dirt short tracks in the Southern United States. Starring Travolta, Michael Madsen and Shania Twain, the movie tries to capture the romance and heart of dirt Late Model racing. Sadly, it misses the mark and might possibly be one of the strangest films about racing. It’s almost like David Lynch inspired some of the scenes and the film’s sense of time. Though, for fans of Lynch, the movie is actually surprisingly good.   As for its accuracy? Well, the podcast has Autoweek’s short-track expert Matt Weaver chime in to give his thoughts on the movie. Weaver gives the film credit for its accuracy to the sport, but, like the rest of the team, thought it was bad as a movie.

Trading Paint is the third John Travolta movie in a row to receive 0% on Rotten Tomatoes! The movie played at one theater in the entire Los Angeles metro area and you better believe we drove to it! We cruised down the 110 Freeway at 75 mph to the AMC Rolling Hills 20 in the remote town of Lomita, CA. The movie stars Johnnie T as a Talladega dirt car racer whose arch nemesis is Michael Madsen and whose love interest is Shania Twain. While probably the least interesting film of the Travolta Zero Percent Trilogy, we are proud to have seen it and to have reported back our findings. And we got to eat at Chili's Grill & Bar afterwards!
