Our exit today has us looking at two small town comedies that take place in the northwest part of the United States. First is Mumford, written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan and starring Loren Dean and a cast of lovely character actors. The second is Mystery, Alaska, written by David E. Kelly and Sean O'Byrne and directed by Jay Roach, with Russell Crowe, Burt Reynolds, and even more lovely character actors. Along the way, Tripp and Ross discover that one of these is charming and the other is maybe the weirdest movie we have covered yet. Plus, discussions of Hannibal Lecter, obscure documentaries, why sports movies don't always get the respect they deserve, two very different impressions of Burt Reynolds' career, what makes a good small town lawyer, and Tripp picks on comedy stars randomly appearing in more serious-minded ensembles. Oh, and there are sex robots. Powered by Riverside.fm Theme Music by Jonworthymusic

Mystery, Alaska is a classic underdog tale. The small town who lives for hockey is thrust into the spotlight when given the opportunity to faceoff against the NHL's New York Rangers (those rascally Rags). Starring Russel Crowe— who was at the peak of his leading man powers—as sheriff/defenseman John Biebe, the movie centers on the sleepy Alaskan town of Mystery. It's a place that takes pride in many things, but hockey is really its treasure. Thus, when the opportunity arises for them to play the aforementioned Rags, the town is abuzz. Throw in some drama around old romances, unfaithful spouses, leaky locker room betrayal, and an old curmudgeon who needs a reason to love the game again, you've got yourself the recipe for a great sports film. Unfortunately, those ingredients did not equate to critical or box office success. Earning just $8.9 million on a budget of $28 million, Mystery, Alaska was a flop. And being drubbed by critics—37% with 82 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes—was unwarranted and nastier than a crosscheck to the face. But, fear not, Mystery, Alaska is well worth a watch; and over time, it has garnered a devout following. That is no doubt due to its charming cast, who all feel like an actual team. You just can't help, but root for them. Now, sit back, high stick an Amber Alt-Style Ale from Alaskan Brewing Co., and keep your head up! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, Capt. This weeks Midweek Mention was chosen by Dan and sees his love affair with sports movies continuing with 1999's MYSTERY, ALASKA.Rusell Crowe stars as Justin Beiber (near enough) : sheriff and captain of the local ice hockey team in the tiny fictional town that gives the film its name. When a Sports Illustrated article is published about the towns open pond style skating it attracts the interests of the NHL and an exhibition game between the New York Rangers and the local community is arranged, propelling the inhabitants of this cold hamlet to the centre of national focus. A heart-warming character movie about a small town that makes it big, with a sprinkle of star power courtesy of Burt Reynolds and an unexpected cameo from Mike Myers (not Halloween), this one failed to make much of an impact on the box office and critical reception was largely negative. What will the dads make of it?

Cinematic Underdogs
30. Mystery, Alaska (1999)

Cinematic Underdogs

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2021 77:04

With "Mystery, Alaska," Cinematic Underdogs is officially a year old. Happy anniversary to us! It felt very apropos to celebrate our first anniversary with a perfectly mediocre sports film. That's what we are here for! Not to bring you the greatest movies ever made. Not to bring you the coolest horror flicks or underrated indie gems. None of that! We are here for nostalgic sports movies that kind of suck, but also make you feel cozy and warm and like a child again. "Mystery, Alaska" isn't very good, but it isn't very bad either. It is benign, inoffensive, utterly anodyne. It is a 90s flick about a small town who gets to play an NHL team for very tenuous reasons. But who cares about believability when you have Russel Crowe, Burt Reynolds, and Hank Azaria leading your cast? At least, that was the logic of the late 90s. And it was kind of a fun time to watch movies during that time. Your average Saturday matinee could be lightweight and melodramatic, frivolous and filled with feel good charm and you'd have a blast and yet file it into the cognitive trash by the time you got home. Run-of-the-mill 90s sports dramas were more often than not extremely enjoyable and yet completely forgettable, which brings us back to this film. Neither of us could remember if we'd even seen it. We merely remembered one scene: something pertaining to a jock strap, and a lot of ice. And as that scene emerged from the depths of our memories and replicated onscreen, it was a most uncanny experience: both familiar and unfamiliar, a sort of cinematic dejavu. There is a bittersweetness to this liminal, dissociative feeling. It reminds one that memories fade, cells decay, time flies, and we all die. But it also reminds us to cherish every moment, and all the small things we give our time to, including so-so films like these. That is the real power of "Mystery, Alaska": in being forgettable, it had the power to evoke long lost and latent recollections of time live, and time passed. It worked a similar kind of magic on us like a madeleine once stimulated Marcel. Who would have guessed a sports movie podcast would have such a Proustian slant? Anyways, I guess the bottom line is that "Mystery, Alaska" is a pretty blah film. But it was fun as hell to discuss. And so, on that note, it was a victory as usual! That is the best part of Cinematic Underdogs: we always win because the process is what we're in it for! So, ya, thanks for listening even if you don't! It is very possible we blather, bloviate, equivocate, and slander to mere ghosts! Either way, we'll keep making content! It's a nice little ritual, and fills life with meaning and fun. And we plan to do this until our stupid little podcast becomes so embedded in the archives of our past that we dust episodes off and enjoy them, like this film, as middling relics of a strange segment of time where we dedicated our minds and energy to documenting opinions and sentiments for reasons that will ultimately seem alien, enigmatic, and inscrutably bizarre.

The boys of Mystery, Alaska basically grew up on the ice. Ice hockey and the Saturday game is life for this lot. But, is that enough to beat a professional outfit like the New York Rangers? Well... probably not.   After a bit of a buzz around a magazine article, an ice hockey match is set up between the team of Mystery and the New York Rangers. A group of amateur ice hockey players have the opportunity to go down in the history books as the team the pros underestimated. It's just a bit of a shame that more wasn't squeezed out of the stories involving those on the periphery.   There is a reverence for hockey on show here that's quite lovely to see. The training drills are decent, the dressing room chat is believable, and the big game is full of drama.    But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. We knew this would happen eventually, and it finally did here: Marcus and Matt stumble into a really bad movie that the person picking it (in this case, Matt) didn't realize was bad because he hadn't seen it in forever.  We tore into Mystery, Alaska pretty relentlessly. What is this movie about? Is it about what it purports to be about, even a little bit (no)? Can the great Russell Crowe salvage this mess, even a little bit (no)? Did we enjoy watching this trainwreck, even a little bit (absolutely)?  This is a fun conversation that serves as a guided tour on what makes a movie bad. Enjoy!

This fun, feel good film has a lot of lessons on fast pacing, quick dialog, and building characters without mounds of unnecessary backstory. Matthew returns for our post mortem on Mystery, Alaska (1999), a movie that almost certainly would've been better if it had been more depressing. Matthew gives me the hockey fan's perspective on the gameplay in the movie, and I lament multiple times that no one gets any hot sauce in their jock straps. Also, we spend more time than I usually allow Googling on mic, so... sorry? Matthew runs the Videodrunk Film Festival in Oshawa, Ontario, which is basically Toronto for all us Yanks (do Canadians call Americans Yanks? Eh). If you're a filmmaker, make sure you listen all the way through, because Matthew has a special treat for you at the end of the chat!

My friend Matthew Rooney joins the podcast to talk about a movie I must have seen the trailer for on a dozen different Blockbuster rentals, Mystery, Alaska (1999). He also explains to me the stereotype about Canadians and hockey, and we commiserate over the plague of deliberately loud cars and motorcycles. I let him in on the secret behind the “Florida man” trope, and we take turns reading the names of Canadian cities off a map. I promise, it's more entertaining than it sounds (but not by much).  Matthew runs the Videodrunk Film Festival in Oshawa, Ontario, which, I'm told, is in the greater Toronto area. Videodrunk is an indie/underground fest where “amateurs, students, DIYers and pros all are treated as equals” — and their submissions are open right now! Check them out if you have a punk-rock movie, and you're proud of its rough edges. Also check them out if you have a million-dollar “indie” flick starring Zach Braff. I'm sure Matthew would be tickled to see that.

We haven't covered hockey in nearly a year and THIS is what we chose to do?! Well, in fairness, how could a Russell Crowe flick in the late '90s go wrong? Mystery, Alaska has a terrific cast, a blockbuster-making director in Jay Roach and it was written by TV legend David E. Kelley, but their dramedy is over-stuffed and all over the place. There are tonal problems, the comedy is weak and does ANY character have a meaningful arc? Geez, we even have issues with the movie's entire concept. It sure isn't "The Mighty Ducks for adults" that we think it's trying to be. So please, for the love of Wayne Gretzky, don't let Burt Reynolds talk you into doing the slow clap, but DO fire up our gab about pond hockey. Pedantry Alert: The outdoor game between Detroit and Toronto in Michigan's Ann Arbor Stadium drew even more people than we thought. The attendance was 105 THOUSAND people, while other cities have often drawn 60 or even 70 thousand people to their own outdoor games in football stadiums. Find us on Twitter: @moviefiend51 and @scoringatmovies

Prior to April 5th of last year ,he was probably best know for starring in theThe Simpsons for the past 28 years, voicing Moe Szyslak, Apu , Chief Wiggum, Comic Book Guy, Carl Carlson and many others. His screen credits include his memorable performance in The Birdcage (1996), Godzilla (1998), Mystery Alaska (1999), America's Sweethearts (2001), Shattered Glass (2003), Along Came Polly (2004), , Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009), and The Smurfs (2011) Only time will tell but I have a feeling that his role as the title character in iFC's Brockmire. may eclipse all of that which is saying something as he is a six time Emmy and a Screen Actors Guild Award winner.
