Jon Summers is the Motoring Historian. He was a company car thrashing technology sales rep that turned into a fairly inept sports bike rider. On his show he gets together with various co-hosts to talk about new and old cars, driving, motorbikes, motor racing, motoring travel. John discusses his experiences at two recent presentations on the future of automobility. The first presentation by McKinsey focused on the concept of a 'software-defined vehicle' (SDV) - likening modern vehicles to connected devices similar to smartphones, and outlining six key areas for achieving success in this domain. These areas included hardware simplification, increased collaboration among manufacturers, leveraging cloud infrastructure, and shifting the focus from traditional engineering to software-driven engineering. The second presentation by a company called Aicas emphasized AI's role in achieving interoperability and managing data within the intelligent vehicle edge, highlighting the importance of selectively recording useful data to avoid latency issues. Both presentations indicate an automotive industry pivoting towards making money from data rather than traditional car components and underscore the industry-wide challenge of securing and managing this data. ==================== Down the road waits misery ... John sits down with indie-dance trio RÜFÜS DU SOL to discuss how they wrote, recorded and produced their most recent album ‘Inhale / Exhale'. Hailing from Sydney, Rüfüs Du Sol—comprised of Tyrone Lindqvist, Jon George, and James Hunt—joined together in 2010 through a shared passion for electronic music. Since their formation, they have evolved from local talents to global dance music icons, through their immersive blend of melodic and atmospheric sounds. With five chart-topping albums to their name, they have embarked on global tours, performed at renowned festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza, and won a GRAMMY Award for Best Dance/Electronic Recording in 2022. Today, they join us from each side of the US to dig into their latest project, ‘Inhale / Exhale'. As well as reflecting on their ever-changing writing processes, they explore the production techniques at the heart of their sound, sharing insights on distorting Tyrone's vocals, gating, and having ‘bass wars' to work out the best parts. "We're getting better at what we do." The Australian dance music trio discuss their longtime creative collaboration and their new album, Inhale / Exhale. Australian electronic dance trio Rüfüs Du Sol—composed of the artists Tyrone Lindqvist, Jon George and James Hunt—is synonymous with catchy, vocal-led bangers. They've received a huge amount of success in more commercial and underground scenes in the more than 10 years that they've been active. In fact, they hit it big from their very first release, Atlas, which peaked at #1 in the Australian charts when it came out in 2013. In the years that have elapsed since, they have won a Grammy Award (and multiple nominations) and sold out stadium shows around the world. In this Exchange, they talk to RA editor Gabriel Szatan in a closed door interview recorded at San Francisco's Portola Festival. The trio took a break from music-making for a period and even moved to different cities. Since they've reconvened, they've undertaken a number of measures to refine their inter-group communication, which has included wellness exercises, group therapy and breath work. They talk about this in some detail, as well as the realities of touring as they've gotten older and started having families. The time required to "fill their bucket" in between tours, as they say, is more critical than ever. As an outfit that's worked together for a long time, they also reveal the intricacies of their now well established creative process, such as how they create internal momentum in songwriting, and their newest album, Inhale / Exhale, which they will tour throughout 2025. INTERVIEW WITH LESLIE CAVENISH (hair cutter to the Beatles and other notable celebrities) ******* Leslie was the Beatles Hairdresser from 1967 to 1975 Leslie Cavendish left school at 15 years old, without any artistic qualifications to become a hairdresser. He worked for the iconic “'60s” hair stylist Vidal Sassoon. Leslie counted many of the stars of the day among his clients — including Keith Moon, Bee Gees, Dave Clark Five, James Hunt, Terry Stamp, Jane Asher, James Taylor and so many more — but the jewel in his career's crown was styling perhaps the four most famous heads of hair in history: The Beatles. ******* Matt and I sit down with Leslie and talk about his wonderful career with Vidal Sassoon. This career led to his involvement with the Beatles and Apple. Leslie has a wonderful book called "THE CUTTING EDGE - The Story of the Beatles' Hairdresser Who Defined an Era We start the interview talking about Tiffany (the 80s singer) and food. Then we get into his book: - His beginnings about his Uncle who played with Ella Fitzgerald - Collecting 45s (his cousin would send him music from the US) - The differance between a Hair Stylist and a Hair Cutter - Meeting Paul McCartney for the first time at his home on Cavendish Ave. - The day he convinced Paul to cut off all his hair - Almost getting fired for joining Paul and the boys to film the Magical Mystery Tour. - Meeting Jimi Hendrix - Leslie's top 3 Beatles songs (it's hard to pick just 3) Leslie has some great stories from his book but we don't give too much away. On this episode (the final episode in season 1 of the podcast) Matt and Richard tell the tale of James Hunt and Hesketh Racing - perhaps the ultimate underdog success story in Formula 1 history. They explain how a small, privateer racing team with a crash-prone driver rose to prominence in the 1970s, culminating with them beating the might of Ferrari to take victory at the 1975 Dutch Grand Prix. Their reputation is one of party loving playboys, but is that an entirely fair representation of the team? In discussing that, Matt and Richard look at the back stories of the 'real racers' at the team's heart: Colourful founder Lord Alexander Hesketh, his equally colourful right-hand man, Antony 'Bubbles' Horsley, and the man they called 'Doc', designer Harvey Postlethwaite. And there are also plenty of thoughts on James Hunt - a man whose reputation off-track, Matt and Richard argue, has led many to overlook (and underrate) his considerable talents as a driver. And make sure you listen until the end to hear about Matt's remarkable run-in (or should that be near run-in?) with Hunt in 1993. Join The Race Members Club for additional podcast content! Sport biopics are usually only reserved for well known big-name sportspeople from yesteryear - people like Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, James Hunt and Niki Lauda, or stories based in reality with fictional characters. What makes Fighting with My Family, and Paige's story so different, is that not only did she achieve the WWE Divas Champion at the tender age of 21, she also won that title just ten years ago, and she comes from a working class family from Norwich, that had just so happened to be the feature of a Channel 4 documentary in 2012. Women's sporting achievements are rarely commended or highlighted in Hollywood, but working class women's sporting achievements are less so. A meeting with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson just before winning the Divas title in 2014 would change everything for Paige. Not only would she take the title from AJ Lee, but Johnson had seen the documentary, related to her story, and told her that very day that he wanted to make a movie of her incredible story.Fighting with My Family perfectly captures the spirit of a family brought together by wrestling, and you'll find something to love whether you're a wrestling fan or not. Ironically, it was the wrestling that made it such a hard sell to studios in the first place...I would love to hear your thoughts on Fighting with My Family !CONTACT.... This week we look at people who had too much money. Starting with F1 racer James Hunt, and his relationship with Lord Alexander Hesketh, a man who had money, and knew how to have fun with it. In this episode, we talk to Pink Floyd recording pioneer Derek T.Derek, whose love of the band began when he listened to the live sides of Ummagumma in 1969, was present at many significant Pink Floyd gigs in their heyday. He shares his concert memories with our host, Ian Priston, and explains the 1970s vinyl bootleg industry and attempts to stamp it out. Derek took over a tiny record shop in Marlborough Court, just off Carnaby Street, London, in 1973, where he would encounter various classic titles such as The Best of Tour '72. At one point you'll hear Derek talking about an Elvis impersonator at the Crystal Palace concert on 15 May 1971, and this did indeed happen. Derek also acknowledges the loss of his good friend, Syd Barrett specialist Bernard White, in tragic circumstances. Later he talks about his experience of Knebworth '75 and going to the 1977 Wembley concerts. The enigmatic Jesus Jellett is mentioned and Derek explains racing driver James Hunt's connection to The Wall shows. Derek then moves on to his key Pink Floyd archival achievement, filming excerpts of multiple The Wall concerts in England and Germany in 1980 and 1981 from different vantage points on a Super 8 camera. Derek subsequently edited his footage highlights together to form a complete concert production. We would like to thank Vincenzo Gatti for his work on mastering the sound.

Next move up for review is Rush, based on the true story of legendary racers Niki Lauda and James Hunt, whose rivalry in the 1970's set Formula One ablaze, literally. But will Rush be able to light the hearts of the Where to Stick It crew, or is it destined to crash and burn like a certain character from this movie?Catch new episodes of the Where to Stick It Podcast every Tuesday and Thursday. In the final of our series on James Hunt, we look at his 1976 battle with close friend Niki Lauda for the World Championship, the greatest season of F1 ever. We then look at his commentary career, where he once said French driver Jean-Pierre Jarier had “a mental age of 10” and should be given a short suspension for poor driving before adding: “for being himself, he should receive a permanent suspension.” Titus O'Reily and Mick Molloy finish off their tribute to the most entertaining F1 driver of all time.
