The summer series continues, as Dave, Mikey, and #XLessDrEarl finally gets to talk about a 90s year! Leave it to new-to-the-show Galaxy Joe from Rule the Galaxy Podcast to bringing in one of the most heralded years in the 90s - the year that brought John Travolta back... that had Jimmy Cameron making non blue people movies... had Tim Robbins crawling through a 500 yard tunnel of poop... left Ben Stiller as the responsible one... made Michael Keaton yelling "stop the presses!"... and Natalie Portman being 12. It was over 30 years ago, but gives us quite a fantastic top ten. John Travolta spent 18 years trying to turn L. Ron Hubbard's Battlefield Earth into the next Star Wars. Instead, he delivered a cinematic disaster that made Waterworld look like Citizen Kane. With alien dreadlocks, nonsensical plot twists, and more Dutch angles than Amsterdam, Travolta's passion project became Hollywood's punchline of the decade. Bitcherton co-stars Cassie Willson and Katie Marovitch join Misha to revolt against Battlefield Earth. Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! Send us a textSPECIAL NOTE: SEASON 15 OF THE GOOD, THE POD AND THE UGLY CELEBRATES THE USE OF THE PRACTICAL AND DIGITAL EFFECT KNOWN AS THE SQUIB. IRL GUN VIOLENCE IS INTOLERABLE AND RENOUNCED BUT... CINEMATIC VIOLENCE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN A WAY WILL DISTURB SOME LISTENERS. Season 15's temporal pincer movement is inverted with this week's pairing to present its earlier film first. So, one week early, we present to you SCARFACE (1983) with returning guest Erik Van Der Wolf from the Blood & Popcorn podcast filling in for Jack who had a boat to catch. After last week's meager showing with First Blood, we return to the blood-filled squib in full force in a movie whose violent reputation Erik disputes, taking a chainsaw to arguments by contemporary critics and noting the various cutaways and reaction shows in lieu of direct onscreen violence. He also makes a case that director Brian De Palma shows uncharacteristic restraint in camera flourishes. What's unrestrained— agreed then and now—is the profanity, clocked at 1.32/minute “f's” given, timed by some film nerd and diligently regurgitated by one of your chin beard hosts who watched the Blu-ray commentary. Typically, we make a halfhearted attempt here in the show notes for a plot recap, but we all know the story of Scarface who's got his word and his balls. This 1980's remake marks a rare confluence of film and actual contemporary events as its Scarface, aka cocaine cowboy Tony Montana played by Al Pacino, is a Cuban refugee, mapping the original immigrant story of the 1932 movie onto real Florida violence. The film is also credited as giving Michelle Pfiefer her breakout role (if one discounts Grease II) in portraying coke whore arm candy. And actual Cuban immigrant and total hottie Steven Bauer plays Montana's bestie (and friend's sister-fucker) Manny Ray. Blood packets explode during a hotel drug deal gone wrong and again when Montana promotes himself over his boss's dead body and then again when given cocaine super powers at the end of the film as Scarface holds off a mercenary army of hitmen, but surprising no squib explodes when Montana shoots Ray in a fit of rage for what could be interpreted as incestual cockblocking. But you knew the plot already. Listen as adult boys who grew up in the VHS era (and Thomas) discuss a film that guest Erik loves and the others find a lesser entry in the De Palma 80s filmography. Guest Erik brings a reread of the Oliver Stone screenplay and filmic muscle memory to recite scenes from the formative flick; Ryan stays bullish on the original black and white gangster picture (and on the film Two of a Kind, the 1983 feature that reunited John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John after Grease I), mainly wishing the De Palma film was closer to the original film's runtime; Ken warms to the film and to Erik; and Thomas might have an opinion after his first watch but is more interested in the sequel videogame for the PS2 and prequel novels by comic book and erotic vampire author L.A. Banks. Next week, Jack returns to discuss the school shooter film Elephant. John Travolta returns as sweaty strutting disco stud Tony Manero in this misguided sequel to Saturday Night Fever co-written and directed by… Sylvester Stallone? Tony makes a brazen leap from Brooklyn to Bizarro World Broadway (and from the '70s to the '80s) but soon finds himself not in a love triangle, but a love pentagon as he vies for the lead role in a dizzyingly demented Dante-meets-disco dance revue provocatively titled Satan's Alley (not to be confused with Tropic Thunder's monks-in-forbidden-love fake film). Javi, Paul and - divinely - Producer Brad embark on their most chaotic episode yet as they are relentlessly pummeled with headbands, leotards, lens flares, slow-mo, possible vampires, and the very apotheosis of The Frank Factor as director Stallone tries to turn this film into a career catapult for his brother to outshine the Bee Gees (who apparently didn't appreciate this). In the immortal words of the film, “It's a journey through hell that ends in an ascent to heaven. You might think it's simple, but if it's gonna work you gotta bust your asses!” And we did, so you don't have to. Let's strut!Show Notes:As Paul mentioned, Dennon and Sayhber, the choreographers for Staying Alive, offer classes. Here's the link to their site where you can sign up for dance classes. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie did the unheard of in the 70s. They both nabbed Oscar noms for a horror movie. Yes, Brian DePalma's "Carrie" was, much like Carrie White's house, a groundbreaker. Featuring telekinesis, the supernatural, religious fanaticism, and (oh yeah) an ever-flowing bucket of pig blood, "Carrie" seemed an unlikely slam dunk, but it scored big with both audiences and critics. Now, decades and remakes later, did Carrie White maybe overreact a smidge? Why did Betty Buckley get the worst of it? And how much 1970s pubic hair belongs in a film's opening credits? The Old Roommates pop on some corsages and give the classic a revisit through their middle-aged lens. Join them ... if you dare. Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. Nearly 500 episodes in, and the Film Stories podcast finally arrives at a Godfather film. Specifically, The Godfather Part III, a fascinating project whose behind the scenes story went on for over a decade. The number of attempts to get the film made climbed into double figures, named such as Sylvester Stallone, Madonna and John Travolta were amongst those linked. But also: writer/director Francis Ford Coppola was not keen to make the movie. Writer/director Amy Heckerling had an opposite problem with Clueless. She was keen to make the story, but for a while, she couldn't get anyone to stump up the bill. When they did? Well, Heckerling finally got some of the respect she deserved... Stories of both are told in this episode... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

(Airdate: 6.30.25) We're diving headfirst into celebrity drama with a side of sequins and surprise cameos. First up, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's $50 million wedding in Venice wraps up with fireworks, a star-studded guest list, and just a few protest banners. But the real heat? Katie Couric throwing major shade at Lauren's lacey Dolce & Gabbana gown—calling it “tacky” and a flashback to the 1980s. Couric may not have gotten an invite, but she definitely RSVP'd to the comment section. And in much less controversial fashion news: John Travolta shocks a packed Hollywood Bowl by popping up at a Grease sing-along dressed as Danny Zuko himself. The audience went wild, Travolta said his iconic “I thought you were going back to Australia!” line. Behind the celebrity endorsements and slick marketing lies one of the most dangerous and destructive cults in modern history. Scientology isn't a religion - it's a sophisticated criminal organization that uses psychological torture, financial extortion, and systematic abuse to control its victims while generating billions in tax-free profits. In this explosive exposé, we pull back the curtain on L. Ron Hubbard's twisted empire of manipulation and reveal the horrifying truth about what really happens inside the Church of Scientology's walls.Prepare to be shocked as we expose Scientology's most sinister practices: the "Fair Game" policy that authorizes the destruction of anyone who opposes them, the psychological torture techniques disguised as spiritual counseling, and the prison camps where dissidents are held against their will. We'll reveal how they infiltrated the IRS to gain religious tax exemption, the massive intelligence operation they ran against the U.S. government, and the systematic harassment campaigns that have driven critics to suicide. From forced abortions in the Sea Organization to children separated from their parents and forced into slave labor, from the mysterious deaths of former members to the billion-dollar real estate empire built on human suffering - this isn't spirituality, it's organized crime. But here's what they desperately don't want you to know: the celebrities are prisoners too. We'll expose how Tom Cruise, John Travolta, and other A-list stars are being blackmailed with their deepest secrets recorded during "auditing" sessions, why high-profile defectors face decades of stalking and intimidation, and how Scientology's leader David Miscavige rules through violence and terror. The missing persons cases, the suspicious deaths, the families torn apart forever - Scientology leaves a trail of destruction wherever it goes. They call it a church, but it's actually a psychological gulag designed to extract every penny from your bank account while destroying your mind, your family, and your life. And they're still recruiting new victims every single day.
We conclude our 6 part series, The Next Step, with SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER (1977)! The surprisingly harsh film that launched a #1 bestselling soundtrack by the Bee Gees and John Travolta to super stardom. You'll easily be able to summon the sight of Travolta strutting down the street in the opening scene and hear that thumping beat of Stayin' Alive, but did you remember that he's actually a 19 year old kid on an errand to buy paint? In this tale set in the end days of disco, Travolta's Tony Manero learns not to treat women like an accessory, breaks away from his oppressive catholic family and ultimately makes the journey across the Brooklyn Bridge...all through dance!Justice for Annette!Guest: Jennifer Goggans from the Merce Cunningham TrustEmma will also do a quick wrap up our Coming of Age mini series by collating all the overlapping themes, so many are set in New York, so many daddy issues, but only one daisy tattoo!LinksVanity Fair articleThe Rest Is History Ep on Disco

Blake Denman is the president and founder of Rickety Roo, a remote agency specializing in SEO and paid search marketing. The Moment that Forced Him to Slow Down Blake didn't set out to build an agency. Like a lot of agency owners, he fell into it. What started as freelancing to pay the bills while he finished school and pursued a different career path took a hard left turn—literally—when a serious bike accident landed him with a traumatic brain injury. That moment forced Blake to slow down. Rebuild. Rethink. And when he got back into client work, he realized something: just because you can do it all doesn't mean you should. Like many agency owners, he hit the familiar ceiling of capacity. So he started hiring. First contractors. Then a coach in 2019. That's when the game really changed. The Pivot Point: Strategic Hires (and the Identity Crisis That Follows) When you've built your agency from the ground up, letting go isn't just hard—it can mess with your head. One of the pivots that really made a difference in Blake's agency was the strategic hires that required him to let go of some areas of the business. For instance, when he finally handed over operations. “I was like that John Travolta meme—just looking around wondering what to do with myself.” And that's the truth no one talks about: letting go of operations isn't just a tactical decision. It's emotional. You've tied your identity to being the guy who does everything. And suddenly… you're not. That shift sparked something deeper—what Blake calls “identity paralysis.” Not a crisis, but a freeze. A moment of, “If I'm not the operator, who am I now?” Spoiler: that question is the start of real CEO-level growth. Designing Your Life (Before It Designs You) Most agency owners plan every quarter like a military op: KPIs, OKRs, revenue targets. But how many plan their life that way? Blake started mapping his ideal year: the trips, the purchases, the experiences. Then he calculated what income he actually needed to live that life. We're mostly led to believe those goals are too far away, but the first time he did this he was just $1,500/month off. So many agency owners think they need to sell their business to finally live the life they want. But often, you don't need to sell—you just need to restructure. What if the business could serve your life now instead of being the thing you have to escape? Time Audits, Energy Filters & the “$5K Task” Rule Most people say they value their time but let it slip through their fingers, which is why you need a time tracking method that works for you. After trying a few, Blake got a framework from one of his early coaches. He categorizes his weekly tasks into four buckets: $5, $50, $500, and $5,000/hour value. If you think your time is worth $5,000 but the time audit shows its mostly spent in the $5 or $50 buckets, congrats—you've just diagnosed why your growth is stuck and your energy's tanked. To his surprise, this is what happened to Blake, who was spending way more time than he thought on the $5 and $50 columns. You don't scale by doing more. You scale by doing less of the wrong things. What Do You Actually Want? If your agency isn't giving you time, freedom, and joy… what the hell are you building it for? Blake now runs his agency with zero calls on Mondays. Focus time is blocked. The calendar is color-coded. And most importantly, the business doesn't need him 60 hours a week to grow. He also has the whole team on Brain.fm, a tool that uses science-backed audio to get you in the zone faster. Some would call that a lifestyle business, but so what? Lifestyle business can be extremely profitable too. Why not build your business around what you like and don't like? People who struggle for 20 years to then sell their agency find that after all their work they have maybe ten years left to do the things they want to do. Lessons for the Owner-Operator Ready to Evolve If you're reading this and feeling that twinge—that mix of burnout and “I want more” clarity—take these cues from Blake: -Let go of the identity that your agency is you. -Map your ideal life, then build your business to fund it. -Hire for elevation, not just delegation. -Your value isn't in the tasks you do. It's in the vision you hold. From the Hustle Hamster Wheel to the Hedonic Treadmill You want the 8-figure agency, right? So did Blake. Until he realized that every time he hit a new goal, he'd feel good for a week… maybe five days. Then it was back to baseline. This is what's called the Hedonic Treadmill—and agency owners live on it without realizing it. We chase growth for growth's sake. Or worse, for external validation—from peers, clients, even family. Blake stopped to think about what was next after he had the money. Was he supposed to save it? Spend it? Did he even need that much? Define what you want your life to look like, and build your agency to support that. Don't fall into the trap of chasing growth for validation more than for yourself. If you let go of the idea of just hitting a number, surround yourself with the best team and clients, and set your priorities, you'll be able to go after what you really want and live your best life. Agency Owners & the Calm in the Chaos Most agency owners have had the type of upbringing that's them great under pressure. Calm in chaos. Laser-focused when everything's on fire. Of course, this can also become a trap if you start creating chaos just to feel normal. For instance, you may seek pressure to push you into action. In his case, after years of needing the chaos, Blake turned to Claude to figure out a way to manufacture chaos without the disastrous consequences. His AI coach creates a “painful penalty” for missing a goal. For instance, donate $1,000 to a political group you can't stand if you miss a revenue target. That'll light a fire. Point is: for some people motivation isn't just about dreaming big. If you need some added pressure to get working engineer consequences that make staying small more painful than pushing forward. In this episode of KYI, the hosts discuss Gene Siskel's favorite movie: Saturday Night Fever. A singular achievement in the history of the medium, if only for its unusual influence on a non-filmmaking aspect of culture. See, without this movie the entire musical genre of Disco probably wouldn't have become a popular as it was. And conversely, if Disco hadn't had its trendy day in the sun, no one would ever have had to think about this absurdly upsetting film ever again! A fascinating alternate history to imagine but seeing as we inhabit this timeline, Elena and Sam made time for a lively conversation about this very very odd artifact of a film. Topics include: John Travolta as an actor, Disco Dead, and the hosts' relationships to dance.

The Grand Knockout Tournament (also known as It's a Royal Knockout) was a one-off charity event first shown on BBC1 on 19th June 1987, to an audience of 18 million gobsmacked viewers. The brainchild of the then 23 year old Prince Edward, the slapstick spectacle featured the Princess Royal and the Duke and Duchess of York captaining rival teams in a series of preposterous rounds involving celebrities including Rowan Atkinson, Tom Jones, Cliff Richard, John Travolta and Les Dawson. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly recall Fergie's feelings of shame, blame and betrayal; discover the extraordinary cast of characters gathered at this bizarre occasion; and explain why Meat Loaf and Prince Andrew did not see eye-to-eye… Further Reading: • ‘Remembering The TV Disaster That Was It's A Royal Knockout' (Grazia, 2020): https://graziadaily.co.uk/celebrity/news/royal-knockout-anne-edward-andrew/ • ‘It's a royal cock-up' (The Guardian, 2002): https://www.theguardian.com/media/2002/mar/05/themonarchy.broadcasting • ‘The Grand Knockout Tournament' (BBC, 1987): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwkv0-QlbZY This episode first aired in 2021 Love the show? It's Die Hard in a bank! This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK, we plug into SWORDFISH — the slick, post-Matrix cyber-thriller produced by Joel Silver and directed by Dominic Sena. With Hugh Jackman hacking mainframes under extreme duress, John Travolta dropping pseudo-Brechtian monologues, Halle Berry delivering the most famous topless scene of the early 2000s, and Don Cheadle constantly violating people's civil rights, it's a film that dares to ask: does it matter if a movie makes no sense, as long as it's entertaining? We also dig into Swordfish's dense meta-layering and debate the broader question: when is too much meta actually bad for the form? As always we break the film down in detail in our ‘Anatomy of an Action Movie section', hand out some ‘Die Hard Oscars' and wrestle with some ‘Double Jeopardy' brain teasers…heck, there's even a Vinnie Jones impression thrown into the mix for good measure! What more could you possibly want?! Join Matt and me for Episode 137 as we slide into our leather jackets and dive into the iconic 1978 film Grease! This one's the word, folks. From the electrifying opening credits to the carnival finale that defies logic (but who cares?), we're hopelessly devoted to this movie. We talk about what makes Grease such a standout in the movie musical canon: the endlessly quotable lines, the legendary soundtrack, and the chemistry between John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John that could practically start a grease fire. And of course, we give Rizzo—queen of biting wit and belted ballads—her due. “There are worse things we could do” than spend a whole episode gushing about Grease, and so we do.It's automatic, systematic, and hydromatic—don't miss it!Support The Conner & Smith Show on Patreon here:https://www.patreon.com/ConnerandSmith?utm_campaign=creatorshare_fanTHANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!
On this episode, we talk about a really sad but awful shit storm of another John Travolta movie, The Fanatic. We talk more about John Travolta, the awful representation of autism, horrible acting, and so much more.
Christopher Nolan. A filmmaker long linked with James Bond. A man who loves his spy movies. A man who's got to the point where he can make pretty much any film he likes. 2020's Tenet remains arguably his most divisive, but talk of the film is also wrapped up in the lockdown year of 2020, and his split from long-term studio partner Warner Bros. We dig into the story here. Then! Gina Gershon is co-starring with John Travolta again in High Rollers, and she joins Simon for a long chat about the film, her career, and how her cat reviews movies. Quite the conversation, this...! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In perhaps the spermiest film we've ever covered, John Travolta and Kirstie Alley hang out with a baby voiced by Bruce Willis and Amy Heckerling gets revenge on Harold Ramis. As David Sims says early in this episode - Look Who's Talking is a VERY RICH text. Vanity Fair's Hillary Busis joins us to talk about this 1989 “forgotbuster,” a film that made a bozo amount of money and dared to ask the question, “What if baby talked??” We're going deep on Travolta lore, grappling with Kirstie Alley's later career, and following numerous tangents on everything from the rules of the Rugrats universe to advancements in crib safety.
