Black Label has one of the wildest stories we've ever heard on The Connect. Growing up in extreme poverty in St. Petersburg, Florida, he was surrounded by crack, violence, and chaos from an early age. By 11 years old, he was already selling drugs. By his late teens, Black Label says he was helping run a multi-million-dollar drug operation, moving large quantities of crack and cocaine while leading a crew in one of the most dangerous environments imaginable. But the money came with consequences. Kidnappings, robberies, violence, federal investigations, and eventually a massive indictment brought the entire world crashing down. Black Label ultimately spent 15 years behind bars, including 28 months in solitary confinement. In this episode, Black Label takes us inside the crack era of 1990s St. Petersburg, explains how a white kid became accepted in an all-Black neighborhood and prison environment, breaks down the mentality that allowed him to survive, and reveals what finally happened when federal agents closed in. He also opens up about his brutal childhood, his relationship with his mother, the lessons he learned in prison, taking responsibility for his decisions, and how he rebuilt his life after coming home. Today, Black Label has transformed his name into a brand, building a professional chauffeur and security business while becoming a viral social media personality and host of the Black Label Lounge. His message now centers around turning “pain into purpose” and showing people that where you start doesn't have to determine where you finish. This is the incredible story of survival, crime, prison, entrepreneurship, identity, and reinvention — told by the one and only Black Label. Go Support Black! Retired Hawks head Dr Godfrey Lebeya has told the Madlanga Commission that he does not have a personal relationship with convicted drug dealer and alleged kidnapping kingpin Timmy Marimuthu. Lebeya says Marimuthu first came to his attention in 2010, while he was investigating irregular appointments in Crime Intelligence. He says Marimuthu would occasionally call him claiming to have information, but Lebeya deliberately avoided meeting him and instead sent police officers to engage with him. Lebeya confirmed that information relayed by the officers was linked to a kidnapping investigation.

Does Daredevil's Director's Cut redeem one of Marvel's most divisive superhero movies? In this episode of Review It Yourself, Sean is joined by Stew from Stew World Order to revisit Ben Affleck's take on Marvel's Man Without Fear and find out whether this early superhero film deserves a second chance. We discuss the differences between the Director's Cut and the theatrical release, Michael Clarke Duncan's unforgettable Kingpin, Colin Farrell's wonderfully unhinged Bullseye, Jennifer Garner's Elektra, and whether this darker version improves on the original. We also explore Daredevil's place in the history of Marvel movies before the MCU, how it compares with modern comic book adaptations, and whether nostalgia has changed the way audiences view it over twenty years later. If you've ever wondered whether Daredevil (2003) is an underrated superhero movie, a misunderstood cult favourite, or simply a relic of early 2000s comic book cinema, this episode has you covered. In this episode, we discuss:Daredevil (2003) Director's Cut vs theatrical versionBen Affleck as Matt Murdock/DaredevilMarvel films before the MCUMichael Clarke Duncan's KingpinColin Farrell's Bullseye performanceJennifer Garner's ElektraEarly 2000s superhero movie trendsComic book movie nostalgiaDoes Daredevil deserve a reappraisal? If you enjoy honest film reviews without the faff, subscribe to Review It Yourself and never miss an episode.Follow Review It Yourself:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reviewityourselfpodcast2021X / Twitter: https://twitter.com/YourselfReviewBlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/reviewityourself.bsky.socialThreads: https://www.threads.net/@reviewityourselfpodcast2021Email: reviewityourselfpodcast@gmail.comSupport the podcastIf you enjoy the show, the best way to support Review It Yourself is to:Follow or subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.Leave a five-star rating and review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.Share your favourite episodes with friends and fellow film fans.Recommend guests, films, or TV shows you'd like us to review by getting in touch via social media or email. Thanks for listening to Review It Yourself – Film Reviews Without the Faff. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) With great power comes great podcasting responsibility… and this week, we web-sling into Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the latest chapter in the ever-expanding adventures of everyone's favourite friendly neighbourhood wall-crawler. Following the reality-bending fallout of No Way Home, Peter Parker is swinging into a genuinely brand-new era, carrying plenty of emotional baggage, mysterious threats, and the sort of comic-book complications that would make even a Daily Bugle editor take a sick day. The film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, and more, with Destin Daniel Cretton taking the director's chair. Joining the discussion are Jill, Dion, and Quinny, alongside special guest host Ardella, as they attempt the impossible: talking spoiler-free about a Spider-Man movie that Marvel and Sony kept under tighter wraps than Peter Parker's secret identity. For the first half of the episode, we stay firmly in spoiler-free territory, discussing performances, themes, action, and whether the movie sticks the landing. But then, fair warning: the second half swings headfirst into spoiler territory. If you’ve already seen the film, you’ll want to stick around as the team unpacks every twist, surprise, and expected plot-line that did or din’t get played out. Was this Spider-flick amazing, spectacular, sensational, or just another friendly neighbourhood day at the office for Marvel’s favourite web-head? Grab your web-shooters, avoid the spoilers until you’re ready, and tune in to hear what the team thought of one of the most talked-about superhero releases of the year. Official Synopsis “It’s a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him, and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him, sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control.” https://youtu.be/migZjbMbnJk A huge shout out to our regular Russels, (Wyatt or Kurt) and friendly Vigilante’s and space-explorers who keep us company on the live-chat during the Twitch stream, each Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEST. For the seventh month of 1996, we witnessed the rise and fall…and rise…and fall of wunderkind Roy Munson (Woody Harrelson), a bowling marvel who loses his good hand after grifting some yokels in a backwater. As a deadbeat salesman years later, he discovers another killer kegler - Ishmael Boorg (Randy Quaid). Munson thinks he can relive his glory days through Boorg, but unfortunately, he's Amish! Munson must smuggle him around the country and hope to reach the apex once more, with only his old rival Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray). It'll come down to only one man to be…Kingpin!

The Farrelly Brothers had a commercial flop but a cult classic when they released Kingpin 30 years ago. We quote it all the time and still find it to be very funny. We brought Maxaphone back onto the pod to talk about it and we had a great time hearing his takes. Enjoy!

What actually separates a poker player from a gambler? Professional poker player, coach, and writer Paul Hoppe steps in as Matthew Fox's full co-host and the two spend this episode arguing over wagers, variance, and self-control at the table before turning it into a lens for superhero risk-taking.They dig into Nick Fury's bet on New York, Kingpin's long-shot gamble in the Spider-Verse, and a decades-long discussion between Matthew and Paul about variance that stretches all the way to how people misread election polling. Tim and Frank take on a deceptively simple question: is Spider-Man actually a street-level superhero? Owen Hanson went from USC athlete to international cocaine kingpin, Sinaloa cartel associate, and federal inmate serving a 21-year sentence — but his story did not end in prison. In this raw conversation with Randall Kaplan, Owen reveals how he survived addiction, cartel violence, prison PTSD, betrayal, and rock bottom before rebuilding his life through discipline, redemption, and entrepreneurship.Owen Hanson's story is one of the most shocking and intense redemption stories ever told on In Search of Excellence. Known as “The Cocaine Quarterback,” Owen opens up about the decisions that led him from college athletics and gambling into the world of drug trafficking, his connection to the Sinaloa cartel, and the terrifying consequences of crossing into that life.Randall Kaplan digs deep into the moments most interviews miss: the role of relationships and connections, the work ethic that fueled Owen's rise, the addiction that nearly killed him, and the prison sentence that ultimately saved his life.Owen also shares what life was really like inside a federal prison — from withdrawal and six-by-eight cells to loyalty, PTSD, survival rules, and the entrepreneurial instincts that helped him build a protein ice cream business behind bars. What started with a frozen protein shake became “King Pin Creamery,” a prison-side hustle that revealed the same business instincts Owen now wants to use legally. This episode also explores Owen's second chance: his legal break through a Rule 35 motion, the corrupt attorney case that helped reduce his sentence, his work today speaking to athletes and at-risk youth, and his mission to prevent others from making the same mistakes.Timestamps00:00 - The cartel moment Owen says he will never forget01:00 - Why USC's network changed the direction of his life03:08 - The work ethic behind becoming one of America's biggest cocaine dealers04:19 - Why Owen says prison may have saved him from dying05:28 - The prison “dance” every inmate has to learn fast06:47 - The loyalty question Owen still refuses to compromise on12:21 - The day Owen considered ending his life14:15 - How a frozen protein shake became a prison business empire19:01 - The prison handshake deal that created a salt monopoly23:01 - The sounds that still trigger Owen's prison PTSD24:21 - The legal twist that took years off his sentence34:47 - How Mark Wahlberg became connected to The Cocaine Quarterback38:20 - Why Owen now speaks to athletes for free40:31 - Owen's biggest regret, scariest moment, and message to everyone watching46:32 - Owen's reaction to Randall Kaplan's Extreme PreparationAbout Owen HansonOwen Hanson, also known as “The Cocaine Quarterback,” is a former USC athlete, entrepreneur, and the subject of the documentary The Cocaine Quarterback. Send us Fan MailToday's show is going to be a little different. Usually, I interview professionals who are law enforcement, military, or victims of crimes. Today, I will interview a man who was a criminal. This is a story of second chances and what can be accomplished after making a mistake.Today on the show, I have Owen Hanson, whose life story was featured in the Mark Wahlberg production documentary, Cocaine Quarterback, available on Amazon Prime. Owen is a California kid whose mother left him and his father at a young age. He grew up playing volleyball and earned a scholarship to play at the University of Southern California. In his sophomore year, he was essentially cut from the team. His coach told him to get bigger and improve his vertical leap. So, Owen worked out six days a week, twice a week, and made it as a walk-on to the football team. He also took performance-enhancing drugs in his quest to become stronger and faster. This kid, who came from a modest middle-class broken home, was now partying with rock stars and other celebrities. He was also the team's and campus's drug dealer. After graduation, he wound up working as a bookie, money launderer, and associate with a Mexican drug cartel. At one point, he was making over a million dollars a day until it all came crashing down on him. He was tried and sentenced to 21 years in federal prison. Through a cooperation agreement with the Australian government, he was released after nine years. While he was in prison, he started a frozen protein product that he is now selling as a free man. Owen made a mistake, paid the price, and is now reinventing himself. He is proof that sometimes all someone needs is a second chance. In today's episode, we discuss:·      Having his mom abandon him as a young boy.·      Your route to USC via volleyball and feeling out of place with the rich kids in his school.·      Dealing illegal drugs in college.·      The availability of powder cocaine at USC in the early 2000s.·      Being benched his sophomore year in college volleyball.·      Becoming a walk-on for the football team. ·      Being the team's drug dealer, getting the drugs at the veterinarian's office in Tijuana.·      Living the rock and roll lifestyle as a college football player.·      How he got involved with a Mexican drug cartel.·      Making prison frozen protein.·      Does he ever look over your shoulder, thinking a cartel hitman might come after him?Head on over to Owen's website to learn more about his story!Head on over to my website! What's the craziest thing you saw when you were a cop?My first week on the job, a guy running at me with a butcher knife. he Untolld Story of NYC's Weed KiingpiinGenovese mob-scion Silvio Eboli lived within the shadows of history, and now for the first time, the untold story of a mafia legend is revealed. The Ganja Godfather (Trineday, March 23, 2015, ISBN: 978-1937584955) s the story about an ongoing organized criminal operation, in real time with firsthand accounts and experiences by award-winning author and investigative journalist, Toby Rogers.Shadowing the Ganja Godfather, Rogers witnesses it all standing next to the Boss himself: violence, drugs, celebrities, girls, construction hustles, crime-family business meetings and social gatherings. From strip clubs in Atlantic City to Sunday night dinner with the wife and kids, Rogers experiences whatever the Ganja Godfather does on any given day. As exhilarating as Silvio's life had become, it certainly was much more stressful behind the scenes. Being the Empire State's spliff king was undoubtedly the hardest job in New York. And it was only after Silvio finally got to the top of the mountain that he realized just how easy it was to fall over the edge. With a wife and kids, dysfunctional family business obligations, and an out-of-control social life all pulling him in conflicting paths, Silvio struggled keep the empire moving forward without detection from law enforcement. But when he was introduced to a Colombian cocaine princess with aspirations to become a model, he saw an opportunity to expand the family's profit margins to unimaginable heights and risked it all despite the collision course with disaster he saw right before him.Toby Rogers is an award winning author and investigative journalist. He has written for the New York Times, New York Post, Village Voice, High Times, Clamor Magazine, and Houston's Public News. He has been featured on MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann, Democracy Now, with Amy Goodman as well as the National Enquirer. He was a consultant and featured in HBO's Horns and Halos documentary.Rogers' first book, Ambushed: Secrets of the Bush Family, was featured in newspapers and magazines in America and internationally. rThe New York Times described Rogers as “a hell of a journalist,” and Ambushed as “very impressive top notch stuBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

From USC walk-on to cartel middleman to federal inmate rebuilding his life one project at a time, this episode with Owen Hanson feels less like a crime story and more like a masterclass in what happens when ambition runs without guardrails.Known as “The California Kid” and “The Cocaine Quarterback,” Owen shares how a relentless drive for success first showed up on the football field at USC before spiraling into steroid use, smuggling, and eventually laundering millions in drug money tied to the cartel. What started with crossing the border to move steroids from Mexico evolved into a world of massive debt, high stakes pressure, and organized crime that ultimately led to a federal RICO indictment and a 21-year prison sentence in 2015.But this conversation isn't just about the rise and fall. It's about what happened after the collapse. While incarcerated, Owen refused to let prison become dead time. Instead, he turned it into a strange kind of laboratory for reinvention, earning his master's degree, writing a book, creating his business, Ice Protein, and even starring in a docuseries produced with Mark Wahlberg. Owen's story is chaotic, unbelievable, and at times cinematic, but underneath all of it is a deeper message: your lowest point does not have to be wasted time. Sometimes the same intensity that destroys a life can also rebuild one.Connect with Owen on InstagramDM me on InstagramMessage me on FacebookListen AD FREE & workout with me on Patreon Connect with me on TikTokEmail me chasingheroine@gmail.comSee you next week!
