“You have been weighed. You have been measured. And you have been found wanting.” Join Ian & Liam for our 331st episode as we joust for glory, dance to Queen in medieval Europe, and revisit Brian Helgeland's wildly anachronistic crowd-pleaser A Knight's Tale (2001). Megs isn't with us this week — she's apparently been appointed to the royal court after successfully inventing modern fashion 600 years early. Kev? Last seen trying to enter a jousting tournament under a fake noble title before being immediately exposed by Paul Bettany. This week we discuss: Heath Ledger's breakout leading-man performance — charming, earnest, rebellious. Was this the moment Hollywood realised he could do absolutely anything? The film's glorious tonal chaos — medieval sports movie, romantic comedy, rock concert, underdog drama. Why does this bizarre cocktail somehow work? Paul Bettany's Chaucer — flamboyant, scene-stealing, and possibly the film's secret MVP. Liam breaks down the film's anachronisms — Queen, Bowie, Nike-energy editing. Does the film transcend historical accuracy through sheer confidence? Ian explores the underdog narrative — class, identity, and whether William's rise actually challenges the social order or merely slips inside it. The romance between William and Jocelyn — genuine chemistry or the weakest part of the film? The sports-movie structure — training montages, rivalries, and comeback arcs dressed in chainmail. The “show vs tell” balance — does the film earn its emotional moments through character work, or simply overwhelm you with charisma and music? Rufus Sewell's Count Adhemar — classic villainy, simmering resentment, and one of the great sneering performances of the era. What's with the romantic plot's detour in Act II - where did that come from? The ending — triumphant, ridiculous, emotionally earned… or all three simultaneously? And finally, whether A Knight's Tale is the Best Film Ever — or simply one of the most aggressively lovable films of the 2000s. Mottola is no stranger to the DCU or James Gunn, having directed episodes of Peacemaker. While DC has yet to comment, Moon Knight writer Matthew Orton reportedly wrote the initial screenplay for the villain duo team-up and is set to do a rewrite if Mottola does end up being the choice. In other DCU news, Friday Night Lights actor Sinqua Walls has joined the cast of Man of Tomorrow in an undisclosed role. Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy is now attached to direct an original sci fi film written by Max Taxe titled Somewhere Out There for Netflix. Darth Vader shows up in Maul: Shadow Lord episodes 9 and 10, and not a single character in the room knows what he is. Matthew and Erin close out the first season of the Maul: Shadow Lord Disney+ series with a deep dive into the finale's most jaw-dropping choices: the silent Vader entrance, the lightsaber choreography that deliberately echoes Return of the Jedi, and what it means that this version of Vader is barely two years removed from being Anakin Skywalker. Why was keeping Vader silent both an ethical and a narrative win. How Maul starts putting together who Vader actually is, laying the groundwork for Rebels. Devon's fall to the dark side, Daki's off-screen death, and Spy-Bot's brutal final moment. The Inquisitors feeling more genuinely dangerous here than in previous animated appearances. And a real debate about Dryden Voss's arrival; was it the right call, especially with a recast voice in place of Paul Bettany?Matthew and Erin also pull out for the longer view: what Vader's inability to clean up this mission might mean for his standing with the Emperor, how the Lawson sacrifice played, and what pieces are left on the board for a potential season two. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Star Wars Generations, an Ethical Panda podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Mount your horse and begin your journey to Canterbury with Emma and Ria as they dig into an excellent movie and extremely loosey-goosey adaptation of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales—2001 cult classic A Knight's Tale! Must an adaptation of a 14 century book be accurate or can it not simply operate on vibes alone? Why is the fact Chaucer is one of the movie protagonists accurate to the book? Who's getting freaky in the Czech Republic on the weekend? All these questions answered and more in today's episode. Content warnings for The Canterbury Tales includes: stories of violence, stories of rape, and 1390's typical racism, sexism, religious opinions, and fart jokes. Content warnings for A Knight's Tale (2001) includes: jousting violence, pre-9/11 crude humor, and a naked Paul Bettany. MOVIE KNIGHT! Join Tom, Dan, and Sarah as they sally forth unto the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS OF JOUSTING in the 2001 live-action sports anime, "A Knight's Tale," the pre-Game of Thrones medieval fantasy that taught us even the lowliest peasant can change his stars, ignore the oppression of a feudal caste system, and make their dad proud if they just believe hard enough. Like a collection of Pilgrim's tales, this movie is greater than the sum of it's parts; this anachronistic period piece uses modern music and The Big Game sports vibes to tap into the melodrama of a rags-to-riches underdog story. Heath Ledger and Paul Bettany give it their all, screaming their passion at you with such unironic intensity that you will be stomp-stomp-clap-ing in your seat like any medieval peasant all jacked up on Queen. Contained within: Chaucer's literary contributions, uncooked pasta lances, and Famous Dan, real-life best friend of British C-tier celebrity.

Our last guests on Soundtracking are Will Sharpe and Paul Bettany, who join us to discuss Amadeus. Available to watch on Sky and Now TV, it's a reworking of Peter Shaffer's classic play, in which the precocious composer arrives in Vienna and soon makes an enemy of court composer Salieri.
Paul Bettany and Will Sharpe don their frock coats for Amadeus on Sky and we speak to both of them on this week's show as they chat all things Mozart with Boyd. Plus we wrap up a festive haul of shows for under your Christmas tree, taking a look at Mart Gatiss' latest Ghost Story For Christmas, The Room in The Tower on BBC2, getting drawn into the sweedy underbelly of Texan high society in The Hunting Wives on ITV, and finally getting to take a ride with Ethan Hawke's ‘truthstorian' as The Lowdown finally splashes down here in the UK on Disney+. All that and Kay loses the power of speech, Boyd recounts a harrowing experience at The Ivy where the doorman didn't know who he was, and James reveals the embarrassing truth of how he spent 469 hours this year. (Episode 368)

Plus Marty Supreme, the high-speed Josh Safdie drama starring Timothée Chalamet as a aspiring table-tennis star in 1950s New York—and finally, Avatar: Fire and Ash. Regular listeners will know about Mark's longstanding love for (slating) the Avatar films—so buckle up for a festive rant. The wonderful Paul Bettany—star of A Knights Tale, Dogville, and more recently the Marvel Cinematic Universe as both the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. and as Vision—is our guest this week. He's with us to discuss the new Sky adaptation of Amadeus—in which he plays Salieri, the frustratedly mediocre nemesis of Will Sharpe's Mozart. The Oscar-winning 1984 film adaptation is Simon's favourite movie of all time—but will Bettany win him over to this new TV version? They unpack it and talk music, the truth about Mozart, and whether Paul will ever direct again. Thanks for listening, and Merry Christmas ya filthy animals! You will recognise the BAFTA nominated actor Paul Bettany best as the superhero Vision, the trudging Geoffrey Chaucer in A Knight's Tale, or maybe as the long suffering surgeon opposite Russell Crow in Master and Commander…a role which saw him learn to play a period accurate cello. But, his familial lineage is full of musical stars and Paul himself was even a busker on the London Underground for a time. What then will he choose for his Inheritance Tracks.Inherited: The Eton Rifles by The Jam Passing on: Hollow Ponds by Damon AlbarnProducers: Anna Bailey and Ben Mitchell
The actor and art lover Russell Tovey - who's not only on a mission to spread his love of art far and wide… but is humanity's best hope in the War between Land and Sea. There's no hint of CGI in the warzones Sally Becker's been to - the recipient of a Lifetime achievement award at this year's Pride of Britain, she's made it her life's work to help children in some of the most unimaginable situations. And Vanessa Ruck - who spent seven years recovering from a life-changing car accident… only to then learn to ride a motorbike and race it in extreme endurance events. All that plus, a man who makes a living with his hand, head, and indeed his entire body inside some of the most iconic puppets on stage - and the Inheritance Tracks of the actor Paul Bettany.Presenter: Adrian Chiles Producer: Ben Mitchell Assistant Producer: Catherine Powell Researcher: Jesse Edwards Editor: Glyn Tansley
His mind... Our final movie from this round of personal picks as we look forward to the holiday season. We discover that one of the hosts has her own cognitive malfunctions to deal with (Paul Bettany face blindness). We reminisce about Jamie's close personal connection to Jennifer Connelly. We forgive Matt for his bad takes about Anomalisa (Cass writes the blurbs). From the heights of notoriety to the depths of depravity, John Forbes Nash Jr. experiences it all. As a brilliant but socially awkward mathematician, he made a groundbreaking discovery early in his career and stands on the brink of international acclaim. But as the handsome and arrogant Nash accepts secret work in cryptography, he becomes entangled in a mysterious conspiracy. His life takes a nightmarish turn and he soon finds himself on a painful and harrowing journey of self-discovery. (Sourced from Letterboxd). Ben and Rob dive deep into Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World, directed by Peter Weir and starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany, and, of course, Russell Crowe (with even more Russell Crowe to come). They unpack why this film grabbed them so powerfully on first watch, why politics usually stay off the table for them, the incredible making-of craft behind the production, and the bizarre yet undeniable parallels between this tightly focused nautical adventure and today's sprawling mega-franchises.Why does this film hit so hard right from the start? How does such a contained story feel oddly aligned with modern blockbuster logic? What did the behind-the-scenes dedication achieve? New month, new theme. We're kicking off "CROWvember" with yet another failed franchise starter from the surprisingly-regularly-featured-on-F2F Russell Crowe. But this time, it's a classy, prestige play Oscar contender from acclaimed filmmaker Peter Weir that was, nevertheless, meant to hopefully kick off a cinematic series. Adapted from the long-running "Aubrey/Maturin" period war-drama novel series by Patrick O'Brian, 2003's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is a rousing 19th century naval battle action epic. But for all the excitement of ship vs. ship conflict, at the heart of the film is a story of loyalty, duty, and male friendship. In an era unfortunately dominated by displays of male toxicity, did we two dudes find something more admirable and aspirational in the friendship of the two dudes played by Crowe and Paul Bettany? And, do we think even a big Best Picture contender like this could really justify a blockbuster-like series of sequels? We discuss all this and more, as we set out to sail in the choppy waters of "CROWvember." Our Twitter Our Facebook Our Instagram Our YouTube Trev's Letterboxd Chris' Letterboxd

An unscheduled but deeply canon (cannon!) episode diving into 2003's Master & Commander: FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD, directed by Pyiter Weir and starring Rusty Crowe and Dr Paul Bettany. Based on the book of the same name. The chaps chat soggy middles, the unsettling stirring notions of naval flicks and the oddity that is this non-story led blockbuster. “Whedon at the line….oh, no, another brick!” - Steve, on the screenplay clunkers On this week's episode, the 2025 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza kicks off with a trip to Franchise Town as we discuss the fun, Spader-tastic sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron! How great is James Spader with this Ultron performance? Are there too many characters in this fully-loaded movie? Should they have written mutant characters when they couldn't use the word ‘mutant' anywhere in the script? And would Ultron have been more menacing if he was given a big, mechanical mustache? PLUS: What in the world is going on with the Maximoffs' accents here? Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Hayley Atwell, Idris Elba, Linda Cardellini, Stellan Skarsgård, Claudia Kim, Thomas Kretschman, Andy Serkis, and James Spader as Ultron; directed by noted jerk, Joss Whedon.
