Our last guests on Soundtracking are Will Sharpe and Paul Bettany, who join us to discuss Amadeus. Available to watch on Sky and Now TV, it's a reworking of Peter Shaffer's classic play, in which the precocious composer arrives in Vienna and soon makes an enemy of court composer Salieri.

The Oscar-winning 1984 film adaptation is Simon's favourite movie of all time—but will Bettany win him over to this new TV version? You will recognise the BAFTA nominated actor Paul Bettany best as the superhero Vision, the trudging Geoffrey Chaucer in A Knight's Tale, or maybe as the long suffering surgeon opposite Russell Crow in Master and Commander…a role which saw him learn to play a period accurate cello. But, his familial lineage is full of musical stars and Paul himself was even a busker on the London Underground for a time. What then will he choose for his Inheritance Tracks.Inherited: The Eton Rifles by The Jam Passing on: Hollow Ponds by Damon AlbarnProducers: Anna Bailey and Ben Mitchell

Ben and Rob dive deep into Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World, directed by Peter Weir and starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany, and, of course, Russell Crowe (with even more Russell Crowe to come). They unpack why this film grabbed them so powerfully on first watch, why politics usually stay off the table for them, the incredible making-of craft behind the production, and the bizarre yet undeniable parallels between this tightly focused nautical adventure and today's sprawling mega-franchises.Why does this film hit so hard right from the start? New month, new theme. We're kicking off "CROWvember" with yet another failed franchise starter from the surprisingly-regularly-featured-on-F2F Russell Crowe. But this time, it's a classy, prestige play Oscar contender from acclaimed filmmaker Peter Weir that was, nevertheless, meant to hopefully kick off a cinematic series. Adapted from the long-running "Aubrey/Maturin" period war-drama novel series by Patrick O'Brian, 2003's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is a rousing 19th century naval battle action epic. But for all the excitement of ship vs. ship conflict, at the heart of the film is a story of loyalty, duty, and male friendship. In an era unfortunately dominated by displays of male toxicity, did we two dudes find something more admirable and aspirational in the friendship of the two dudes played by Crowe and Paul Bettany? And, do we think even a big Best Picture contender like this could really justify a blockbuster-like series of sequels? We discuss all this and more, as we set out to sail in the choppy waters of "CROWvember." Our Twitter Our Facebook Our Instagram Our YouTube Trev's Letterboxd Chris' Letterboxd

We dive into our fan casting choices for Nick Cutter's skin-crawling horror novel, imagining which actors would bring these disturbing characters to life on screen. The book's phenomenal writing made our skin crawl in the best possible way, earning a strong 4.5/5 rating despite—or perhaps because of—how deeply uncomfortable it made us feel.• Fan casting pairs book characters with actors who could play them in a hypothetical film adaptation• David Harbour (Stranger Things) and Paul Bettany suggested for Scoutmaster Tim• Evan Peters unanimously chosen as the perfect actor to play creepy Shelly• Actors from "Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse" inspired many of our casting choices• Brief side discussion about Shia LaBeouf and the film "Peanut Butter Falcon"• Nick Cutter's descriptive writing made the horror feel visceral and real• Initial confusion about "the worm thing" gave way to complete immersion• The book gets under your skin and stays with you after readingFollow, subscribe, and share!Support the showEditing done by Connor Luther @clfilms.coMusic by @thundercatlouisMerch Here

In this episode of Comic Stripped, Mark Radulich and Evan Bevins dive into Here, discussing how Richard McGuire's formal experiment reshaped the boundaries of graphic storytelling and how Zemeckis' adaptation attempts to interpret that same vision through cinema. The hosts explore whether the emotional arc added in the film enhances or detracts from the original's minimalist power. They also debate the challenges of adapting abstract art into narrative film, and where Here sits in the pantheon of both graphic novels and cinematic experimentation."Here" is a 6-page comic story by Richard McGuire published in 1989, and expanded into a 304-page graphic novel in 2014. The concept of "Here" (in both versions) is to show the same location in space at different points in time, ranging from the primordial past to thousands of years in the future. "Here" has been recognized as a groundbreaking experiment with the formal properties of comics. Here is a 2024 American drama film produced and directed by Robert Zemeckis, who co-wrote the screenplay with Eric Roth, based on the 2014 graphic novel by Richard McGuire. Echoing the source material, the film is told in a nonlinear fashion: using a locked-down or "static shot" technique, the story covers a single plot of land and its inhabitants, from the distant past to the 21st century. During the film, the screen is often subdivided into panes, presenting events from different times simultaneously. The film stars Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Paul Bettany, and Kelly Reilly, with digital de-aging via generative artificial intelligence being used on much of the cast to have them portray their characters over time. Here premiered at the AFI Fest on October 25, 2024, before being theatrically released in the United States by TriStar Pictures through Sony Pictures Releasing on November 1, 2024.[10] The film received generally negative reviews from critics and grossed $15.8 million.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59 For the purposes of engaging with tiktok and youtube viewers, what is the best 10min or more segment from this podcast? On this episode of Remainders, we watch the 2003 war epic Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Based on the series of novels, Master and Commander is a chase movie that goes much deeper. Russell Crowe plays Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey, and Paul Bettany plays Dr. Stephen Maturin. The Captain represents leadership and duty, and the Dr. represents academia and revolution. As they chase the elusive French war ship The Acheron, the two men both test and help each other during the Napoleonic Wars. Old-school action filmmaking in a modern war epic – she's in her prime.Other topics include Peter Weir and Australian directors, more Russell Crowe buddy movies and L.A. Confidential, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Tom Cruise and Mission: Impossible, ai in movies and tv, and fast food we're eating and not eating lately.Song Picks of the WeekMuzzle by The Smashing PumpkinsHawaii by The StrokesRemainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

This week in physical media may be appealing to the cults out there. Whichever you belong to, Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski are here to guide you towards your particular following. Perhaps you are in the Richard E. Grant & Bruce Robinson cult. Or stay on that side of the pond with an Oscar-winning musical and a film that was the Bridgerton of its time in the way it uses music. Maybe you're in the late Friday the 13th cult and enjoy its post-Paramount days. Or you have a taste for a marathon of Blaxploitation. Whether you love movie doggies or mutated bears, its best to just avoid the sleeping bags this week. 1:38 - Criterion (Withnail & I 4K, How to Get Ahead in Advertising 4K) 14:36 - Sony (Oliver 4K, A Knight's Tale 4K) 26:29 - Arrow (Jason Goes to Hell 4K, Jason X 4K) 47:09 - Shout (Blaxploitation Classics Vol 1) 1:02:43 - Kino (Wonder Dogs, The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders, Prophecy 4K) 1:23:01 – New Theatrical Titles On Blu-ray (The Quiet Ones, Presence 4K) 1:24:15 - New Blu-ray Announcements

“Whedon at the line….oh, no, another brick!” - Steve, on the screenplay clunkers On this week's episode, the 2025 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza kicks off with a trip to Franchise Town as we discuss the fun, Spader-tastic sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron! How great is James Spader with this Ultron performance? Are there too many characters in this fully-loaded movie? Should they have written mutant characters when they couldn't use the word ‘mutant' anywhere in the script? And would Ultron have been more menacing if he was given a big, mechanical mustache? PLUS: What in the world is going on with the Maximoffs' accents here? Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Hayley Atwell, Idris Elba, Linda Cardellini, Stellan Skarsgård, Claudia Kim, Thomas Kretschman, Andy Serkis, and James Spader as Ultron; directed by noted jerk, Joss Whedon. Welcome back to the pod! This week we're heading back to 2011 and the film Margin Call. Now lots of you may have missed this when it first came out but its online popularity has given it a real second wind. We get stuck into some of the best scenes in the film in particular the boardroom sequence where Jeremy Irons lays down the law, we discuss the nature of how money can change an individual, how morality and self preservation can get in the way of each other and what lengths people will go to to ensure survival in their own bubble. How about this for a cast by the way: Kevin Spacey as Sam Rogers, Paul Bettany as Will Emerson, Jeremy Irons as John Tuld, Zachary Quinto as Peter Sullivan, Stanley Tucci as Eric Dale, Simon Baker as Jared Cohen, Demi Moore as Sarah Robertson, Penn Badgley as Seth Bregman, Mary McDonnell as Mary Rogers, Aasif Mandvi as Ramesh Shah. Hell of a shoot out for MVP!There are few redeeming features around any of the characters but we take a look at which characters seem to have some level of moral sensibility - as we rank them on the scumbagometer! Finally we discuss whether a film can become a fine wine through the nature of its online presence and being resurfaced through Youtube! Lots to get into - back with you on Friday with what to watch this weekend!Time to get watching for next week: Into the Wild (2007) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In the season six premiere, our hosts prepare to joust over the not-so-romantic comedy A Knight's Tale (2001). Madison proclaims she has finally broken the season premiere curse, but Chelsea thinks her cohost has tampered with the results. Either way, they both agree that people would wage war for the pleasure of Heath Ledger's smile, and Chaucer has never been more accurately portrayed in film. With a stacked cast including Paul Bettany, Alan Tudyk, not to mention the deadly cheekbones of Rufus Sewell, this hilarious medieval romp will leave you yearning for ren faire to return.Connect With UsFollow us on Instagram @loveatfirstscreening or send an email to loveatfirstscreening@gmail.comProduction Hosts: Chelsea Ciccone and Madison HillMusic: Good StephArtwork: Chelsea CicconeSocial Media: Marissa CicconeAbout the ShowAn examination of classic tropes and iconic characters pits connoisseur against cynic—one romantic comedy at a time. The cinematic world of love and laughter had rom-com enthusiast Madison head over heels from the time Harry met Sally. For genre skeptic Chelsea, however, it's been a grueling enemies-to-lovers plot. Coming off the back of the film Payback, Oscar-winning writer/director Brian Helgeland feared he might be in movie jail. Thus, he got writing, and came up with A Knight's Tale, a film mixing jousting, modern music, Heath Ledger, and a naked Paul Bettany. It took months to shoot in Europe. When it came to the music, David Bowie turned up. And then there's the tale of its sequel that never was. King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword meanwhile was to be the first of six films, as originally pitched. Guy Ritchie came in to direct, and star Charlie Hunnam would admit that the film they started making wasn't the one they ended up with. Quite the story, though. Includes elephants and David Beckham. Tales of both are told in this episode. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week we reach back into the archive for our first visit from Dr. Mary Hicks to talk about the brilliance of Master and Commander and to talk with Mary about her research into African Mariners in the South Atlantic. About our guest:Mary Hicks is a historian of the Black Atlantic, with a focus on transnational histories of race, slavery, capitalism, migration and the making of the early modern world. Her first book, Captive Cosmopolitans: Black Mariners and the World of South Atlantic Slavery, 1721-1835, reimagines the history of Portuguese exploration, colonization and oceanic commerce from the perspective of enslaved and freed black seamen laboring in the transatlantic slave trade. As the Atlantic world's first subaltern cosmopolitans, black mariners, she argues, were integral in forging a unique commercial culture that linked the politics, economies and people of Salvador da Bahia with those of the Bight of Benin.
In this extremely belated Halloween episode following another unanticipated long hiatus, the randomizer goes all the way back to 2021 to pick the Halloween episode of one of the biggest zeitgeist-capturing megahit series in the illustrious five-year history of Disney+. The first-ever television show produced by Marvel Studios was also a twisted love letter to the history of television itself, filtered through an uncommon love story between an Eastern European witch and an undead British-accented android, in a thoroughly postmodern setting that literalized how escapist entertainment can paradoxically become a mental prison, all wrapped up in a package so weird and yet so accessible that it could only have been made by (and likely would only have been embraced by the masses IF made by) Marvel. For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Dan Bayer & Tom O'Brien to review and discuss the latest film from Academy Award-winner Robert Zemeckis, "Here," which reunites him with his "Forrest Gump" stars Tom Hanks, Robin Wright and also stars Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly. Tune in as we discuss these elements, the writing, acting, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on...
