This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the 3rd episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we are pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, it's all about bowling! For some reason, both of these sets of brothers made bowling movies – and both of them performed pretty badly on release, only to become cult classics. So, we'll be talking about Joel & Ethan Coen's 1998 neo-noir comedy THE BIG LEBOWSKI, and Peter & Bobby Farrelly's 1996 sports comedy, KINGPIN. Which is the better bowling movie?In The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges shines in a career role as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski in a tale of mistaken identity, deceitfulness, severed toes, nihilists, White Russians and lots of bowling. After his rug get soiled by a couple of guys looking for money from a millionaire with the same name, The Dude falls down a rabbit hole that feels straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel. This film is damn near perfect. It's funny, has a great story, stellar performances with a supporting cast boasting John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore and John Turturro, a kick ass soundtrack and some insanely good cinematography from Roger Deakins. The Dude Abides.But is it a better bowling movie than Kingpin? Woody Harrelson plays Roy Munson, a young bowler who is just about to make it big, before his rival, Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray doing Bill Murray shit) tricks him into doing con games, which results in Roy's bowling hand getting destroyed. Years later, Roy is an alcoholic with a hook for a hand and no prospects, before he stumbles upon Ishmael (Randy Quaid), a promising young Amish man that Roy attempts to take to the top of the bowling world. It's more of what you expect from the Farrelly's, with some gross out humour, fun 90s soundtracks, and some hit or miss elements. But, it's pretty much the Farrelly's most underrated, and potentially one of their better titles. And, it actually is more about bowling than The Big Lebowksi, it just may look as nice. 1996 gave us two things, cloned sheep and the Farrelly brother's bowling comedy, Kingpin. Kingpin brought us the story of Roy Munson, a disgraced bowling phenom who lost his glory, and his hand, and now sells bowling supplies. One day, a visit to a local lane introduces him to Ishmael, the sweet Amish boy with a serious knack for the lanes. Roy convinces him he can turn him with his help they can win the million dollar prize at a massive tournament and they embark on a wild adventure full of missteps. With a great cast of Bill Murray, Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid, and Vanessa Angel, but modest reviews and modest earnings, this one really turned up on the home video sales and became a fan favourite. But does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent debate the line between good sex and great bowel movements as we try to see if this is a strike or if we should be spared.

After the success of Dumb & Dumber, the Farrelly Brothers turned their attention to the world of bowling for 1996's Kingpin.Everyone in this film is terrible, pretty much. The cocky villian, Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray), is terrible; con artist Claudia (Vanessa Angel) is terrible; and the "hero" of the piece, Roy Munson (Woody Harrelson), is terrible. Everyone bar, maybe, Ishmael Boorg (Randy Quaid), who wants money to save his community. Kingpin tells the story of how a brush with horribleness can change your life forever. Roy Munson was never the same after meeting Big Ern. He couldn't bowl for a start. But, through meeting Ish and Claud, the trio eventually start to become better people. Sort of. Again, everyone in this is awful!It's a Farrelly Brothers movie, so realism wasn't exactly what they were going for with the depiction of the sport. In many ways, though, we really hope there's a pro bowler out there with a rose in his transparent ball.Anyway, we're getting ahead of ourselves. The theme this month is movies that bombed that should have been can’t miss success stories. Nothing, and I mean nothing fits that bill more than Solo. First, it is a Star Wars tale. Star Wars should by the virtue of being the second most successful franchise ever (well first if you don’t count the entire 1,834 movie MCU) always be a massive box office smash. Secondly though, is that that this was the back story of Han Solo. One of the most identifiable and iconic characters of a generation. Easy right? Young Han Solo meets Lando, saves Chewie, makes the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs and wins the Falcon in a game of Sabacc. Simple. A grad student could write it. Well, either because this was really Train Heist with Young Han Solo and Roy Munson from Kingpin or that the Mouse had pissed off 80% of the fandom by either scrapping the EU, killing Luke or politicizing Star Wars and what you get is a Star Wars film that lost a dumptruck full of money and halted future movie productions beyond episode 9.
