Could It Be Magic, the FA Cup podcast sponsored by Carling, returns as Joe Cole and Ashley Cole welcome Sean Dyche into the studio just days before he was appointed Nottingham Forest manager. They revisit Chesterfield's famous FA Cup semi-final run in 1997: the brilliant team talk by John Duncan before the game, the surprise pre-match call from Roy Keane, and the penalty he buried straight down the middle despite never having taken one before. They also discuss the return of long throws and set pieces to elite football and how Brian Clough's tactics at Nottingham Forest wouldn't look out of place in the modern game. Sean shares plenty of tales from his colorful playing and managerial career, including the time Arsène Wenger was served some dodgy red wine at Burnley and how Sean once turned up to a London nightclub in a tuk-tuk, only to meet Chris Eubank in his giant truck. Dyche lets us in to his world away from football and reveals what it's like to find yourself becoming a social media meme and being asked to FaceTime people's nans. He chats about his stint shadowing the Oxford boat crew while doing his pro licence, including the moment he met the Winklevoss twins without realising who they were until he watched The Social Network. Rachel O'Sullivan from Girls on the Ball gives her thoughts on some of the big stories from the women's game, including whether Chelsea can repeat their treble success, why Arsenal are struggling to find their rhythm and she names the dark horse she thinks could have a great run in the Adobe Women's FA Cup. JOIN MSC INSIDER BELOW: https://modernsoccercoach.mimentorportal.com/subscriptions As Martin O'Neill returns to Celtic Football Club, we revisit a powerful conversation that captures everything he stands for as a coach and leader. From his early days under Brian Clough to managing Leicester, Celtic, Aston Villa, and the Republic of Ireland, O'Neill has lived through every phase of football's evolution — and he's never lost sight of what truly matters. In this interview, Martin reflects on: The lessons from Brian Clough and why simplicity still wins in a complicated world. Rebuilding belief at Celtic, turning a 21-point deficit into a 6–2 victory over Rangers and a title-winning side. Managing upwards in the modern game, where CEOs, directors, and data often overshadow football people. Roy Keane's impact on culture, standards, and leadership inside the dressing room. The dangers of over-analysis, and why clarity and trust will always be the foundation of coaching. It's an honest, entertaining, and deeply relevant listen for any coach navigating today's game — reminding us that football is still, at its core, about people, relationships, and belief.
Michael Sheen is an award-winning actor. After finding his love for the stage with the West Glamorgan Youth theatre as a teenager, he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He spent the 1990s making a name for himself as a stage actor, shining in the classics from Romeo and Juliet to Peer Gynt as well as in 20th century masterpieces such as Look Back in Anger and Amadeus, receiving several Olivier Award nominations along the way.A relocation to the US in the early 2000s with his then partner, the actress Kate Beckinsale, and their young daughter Lily prompted a move into films. His breakthrough came in 2003 when he portrayed Tony Blair in a Stephen Frears film called The Deal. It was the beginning of what became an unlikely specialism: morphing into real people from recent history: Kenneth Williams, David Frost, Brian Clough, Chris Tarrant, and Prince Andrew – with two more outings as Tony Blair thrown in for good measure.Michael was born in Newport, South Wales, in February 1969, the eldest of two children to Meyrick and Irene. He grew up in Port Talbot from the age of eight and considers it his hometown. His first love was football, and he was spotted as youngster by an Arsenal talent scout to play for their youth team. His parents decided against moving the family to London and he turned to acting instead and graduated from RADA in 1991.Alongside the classic dramas, his range extends to appearing in fantasy and science fiction films such as The Twilight Saga and Tron: Legacy. Michael has said that the most meaningful project to him was a modern restaging of the passion play in Port Talbot in 2011, which involved the participation of a thousand local people, because it opened his eyes to the difficulties many of them were experiencing. He has since used his own money to fund the 2019 Homeless World Cup in Cardiff and set up an organisation which supports community groups. Michael lives in Wales with his partner, the actress Anna Lundberg, and their two young daughters. We all remember Brian Clough's infamous 44 days as manager of Leeds United, a fractious period of time which compared favourably with Liz Truss's time as Prime Minister of the UK - and of course the lettuce that lasted longer than either of them. Colin Shindler recalls with ghastly clarity Steve Coppell's 33 days in charge of the disaster that was Manchester City in 1996. Both these short-lived phenomena have been beaten very recently: not just by what last week with Ange Postecoglou's departure from Nottingham Forest but also by what happened at the start of this season – the sacking of Erik Ten Hag after just three competitive matches in charge of Bayer Leverkeusen. Jim White, Colin Shindler and Jon Holmes speculate as to what on earth Bayer Leverkusen could possibly have found out about Ten Hag after three matches that they didn't already know when they made the decision to hire him in the first place? Send us a textEpisode 189There are managers who win, and there are managers who inspire. And then, there was Brian Clough. A man who did both—but never the way you expected. His story is one of belief, defiance, and an unshakable will to prove the world wrong. This is not the tale of his entire career, nor a full chronicle of his triumphs and controversies. Instead, this is the story of one remarkable chapter, a moment in time when Clough, alongside his trusted lieutenant Peter Taylor, took a club from the middle of England and placed them at the very summit of European football.Nottingham Forest's rise from the shadows to the pinnacle of the game was no accident. It was built on Clough's genius, his charisma, his fire. From the quiet struggles of his brief, ill-fated spells at Brighton and Leeds to the unstoppable march through English and European football with Forest, this is a tale of redemption, determination, and an unrelenting pursuit of greatness. And at its heart, there's a night in Munich. A night when a provincial club, fueled by belief and led by a maverick, toppled giants and became kings of Europe. This is the story of that journey. The setbacks, the triumphs, and the man who made it all possible. This is Brian Clough. This is Nottingham Forest. And this is how they conquered the world.Support the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.com

In 1981 Brian Clough paid £1 million pounds to bring Justin Fashanu to Nottingham Forest. It was the climax of a meteoric career, but within months the goals had dried up, he'd been going to gay nightclubs, and Fashanu had also become become a born again Christian. Four decades later Justin Fashanu remains top flight English football's only openly gay player. From his beginnings in care with brother John as Barnardo's boys, via adoption, boxing, football and failed pop star, this is an extraordinary life, beautifully highlighted by his nominator, Ekow Eshun."He was a pioneer - he broke ground. He was a prominent black footballer at a time when to be black and a footballer was fraught territory, when players were barracked from the terraces for no other reason than the colour of their skin." Ekow EshunAlso in studio is Richard Williams of the Guardian, who saw Fashanu play on the way and on the way down. Plus there is moving archive of Fashanu himself, and also from his niece, Amal Fashanu, talking at the time of the release of her documentary, Britain's Gay Footballers. The producer for BBC Studios Audio is Miles Warde

Raised in an Irish Catholic family as one of nine siblings, Martin O'Neill was brought up with Gaelic football but he dreamt of becoming a professional English footballer. At 18, he was scouted by Nottingham Forest and quit his law degree to sign for the club. He went on to become an integral part of Brian Clough's legendary Nottingham Forest squad, winning back-to-back European Cups, and made history as the first Catholic player to captain Northern Ireland's national team. After hanging up his boots, Martin achieved remarkable success as a manager, leading Celtic and Leicester City to major titles and taking the Republic of Ireland to the knockout stages of the 2016 Euros. He is now the chairman of the League Managers Association and co-hosts the Global podcast The Football Authorities with Clive Tyldesley.
