In our last edition before the World Cup break, Colin Shindler and Jon Holmes are joined by the distinguished author and journalist Duncan Hamilton. Duncan has written almost twenty books on various aspects of football and cricket including three William Sports Book of the Year winners. Among those twenty are biographies of George Best, Harold Larwood and Neville Cardus, a fascinating portrait of Brian Clough called Provided You Don't Kiss Me and his latest Answered Prayers about Alf Ramsey and the winning of the World Cup. You would think that there was nothing left to say about 1966 but by concentrating on the rather tortured character of Alf Ramsey, Duncan makes us relive that whole experience with fresh insight. In particular Duncan promotes the importance in Alf's life of the Spurs manager Arthur Rowe, the now almost forgotten manager of the Tottenham Hotspur side that won the League Championship in the 1950-51 season. His tactics came to be called “push and run” and in Alf Ramsey, Rowe found a willing student. To discover all sorts of fascinating details about Alf and the 1966 World Cup triumph download the latest podcast. And just to re-iterate: Colin, Jon and their indefatigable producer, Paul, are arriving at the World Cup like all the players – utterly knackered. In order to recharge the batteries, they will have a close season where they will not be found drunk and disorderly in a nightclub in Ibiza. Instead, they will be back bright eyed and bushy-tailed for the new season towards the end of August. If you really can't wait till then and you want to see them all in operation you will be able to find them at the Nevill Holt Festival in the glorious Leicestershire countryside near Market Harborough at 4.45pm on Saturday 13 June. 'Sixty Years of Hurt with David Baddiel' explores the meaning of England and Englishness through the history of the England Men's Football team. This is a social and cultural history as much as a sporting one, examining the story England tells about itself and how it's changed, via the medium of the international game.In episode two, England v Mavericks, David shares a theory that he once unsuccessfully shared with England Manager, Terry Venables. England isn't good at dealing with talent, specifically with maverick talent, talent that doesn't play by the rules - the best kind of talent. As a result, England men's football is littered with wonderous players who won very few caps, and never more than in the 1970s. David thinks the team, in this respect, represents the country and gets to the bottom of how various kinds of Englishness fought to keep the genius Brian Clough away from the manager's job, and Rodney Marsh, the most talented player of his generation, away from the team. Across the series, David Baddiel will be joined by contributors including Stephen Fry, Alex James, Maisie Adam, Elis James, Barney Ronay, Roy Williams, Des Lynam, Stuart Pearce, Jean Williams, David Goldblatt, Pippa Grange, Jonathan Wilson, David Seaman, Omid Djalili and many more.Sixty Years of Hurt with David Baddiel is produced by BBC Studios Audio for BBC Radio 4, in collaboration with Left Bank Pictures who are producing the upcoming drama Dear England for BBC iPlayer and BBC One.The producers are Rich Power and David Baddiel.

How great were Brighton & Hove Albion 1982–1983?In this episode of By Far The Greatest Team, Graham Dunn and Jamie Rooney are joined by South Coast Jamie Wilson to tell the story of one of English football's great contradiction seasons: Brighton & Hove Albion 1982–83.This was a campaign that ended in relegation from the First Division — but also took Brighton to the first FA Cup Final in the club's history. A season of struggle, chaos, colour, character and one immortal Wembley moment. We look back at Brighton's wider journey through football history, from their formation in 1901 and Southern League roots, through the Brian Clough interlude, the Alan Mullery era, Peter Ward's goals, and the rise that carried the club into the top flight. Then we focus on 1982–83 itself: Jimmy Melia's unlikely FA Cup adventure, the key players who carried Albion to Wembley, and the unforgettable final against Manchester United. The first game ended 2–2, giving Brighton one of the most famous near-misses in FA Cup history: “And Smith must score…”Was Gordon Smith's chance the moment that defined Brighton's past? Or has it unfairly overshadowed a remarkable achievement from a team fighting battles on every front? With players like Steve Foster, Jimmy Case, Michael Robinson, Gary Stevens, Tony Grealish, Graham Moseley and Gordon Smith, Brighton 1982–83 may not look like an obvious candidate for greatness. But sometimes greatness is not just about trophies. Sometimes it is about story, identity, resilience, and how close a team came to changing everything. So where do Brighton & Hove Albion 1982–83 belong in our Table of Greatness?Takeaways Brighton's rise from Southern League roots to the First Division The importance of Alan Mullery, Brian Clough and Peter Ward in the wider Brighton story Why the 1982–83 season was both a disaster and a fairytale Jimmy Melia's colourful and chaotic FA Cup run The key players behind Brighton's Wembley journey The 1983 FA Cup Final against Manchester United Why “And Smith must score” remains one of the great FA Cup moments Whether a relegated side can still be considered great Listen now and join us as we decide whether Brighton & Hove Albion 1982–1983 were truly one of football's greatest teams. If you enjoy these podcasts, please don't forget to subscribe and give us a rating and also tell everyone about them!

Tony Woodcock was one of Jon Holmes' earliest clients, a superb player who scored 139 goals in 437 appearances for Nottingham Forest, FC Koln and Arsenal besides the 16 goals scored in 42 appearances for England. This record compares favourably with Jon and Colin Shindler's combined contribution of no goals at all at professional level. It is therefore entirely appropriate that we leave the discussion on the art of goalscoring and how it has changed in the past forty years entirely to Tony. Along the way we get his insight into the weird and wonderful art of management as practised by Brian Clough and a detailed description of what happened when Tony was transferred to FC Koln much to the displeasure of Mr Clough. We also learn what happened when Tony took a DNA test to discover where his skill as a professional footballer might have come from. The results were surprising, even to Tony. "He's absolutely teeming with talent. I'm just trying to teach him to tackle like Archie Gemmill now." Brian Clough was full of praise for his young midfielder Neil Webb back in the 1980s. In this fascinating conversation with pod host Marcus Alton, the former England international shares special memories of playing for the Miracle Manager. The stories include signing a blank contract ('Seriously, you want me to sign it and then I'm yours, regardless of what's on it?'), being dropped from the first team after volunteering to go in goal ('Working with the gaffer, I learned not to volunteer for anything') and Cloughie's last-ditch effort to keep the star midfielder when Man Utd came calling ('I was shocked to see him at the tribunal which set the transfer fee'). When Neil Webb scored in a Wembley cup final to help secure his first major trophy in English football, Brian Clough ensured the young midfielder's family shared the celebrations in the dressing room. "He invited my dad and grandad into the dressing room, but my mum wasn't allowed in - he even apologised to her!" recalls Webb. "We all had a photo with the cup - he knew it meant that much to me. My mum still has that photo on the living room wall."That special memory is one of many Webb shares with Green Jumper host Marcus Alton in this trailer for the full interview.

The incredible story of the football icon who changed a boy's life. Craig Bromfield's start in life was difficult: there was often no electricity in his childhood home, and he didn't even own a coat. He was in and out of the social care system, and would ask for money on the street. This is what 11-year-old Craig was doing with his brother Aaron, one fateful day in 1984, on a windswept seafront in the North East of England when he crossed paths with the era's most famous football manager, Brian Clough - and his life was changed forever.Brian Clough was manager of Nottingham Forest at the time, but his character transcended sport and regularly delighted UK television audiences. After a few meetings with Craig, Brian's public persona as an opinionated and uncompromising football boss melted away. Behind the studio lights and the bravado, Brian was a secret softie. He wanted to give Craig a better life, and incredibly, invited him to live with him and his family. Only Craig's early years would come back to haunt him when at 19 he made a decision that put the two men's friendship on the line.Craig's published a memoir called Be Good, Love Brian: Growing up with Brian Clough.Presenter: Asya Fouks Producers: Elena Angelides and Edgar Maddicott Lives Less Ordinary is a podcast from the BBC World Service that brings you the most incredible true stories from around the world. Brad Friedel played his college ball at UCLA and had a stint at Liverpool before a longer and seriously fruitful one at Blackburn Rovers. He also stopped shots for Aston Villa and for Tottenham Hotspur, where in his final season he ran into a guy named Mauricio Pochettino. The goalkeeper, who was capped 82 times for the U.S. Men's National Team, got a front-row seat to the Argentine's methods when he came in and transformed the club, and his faith has never wavered that Pochettino will deliver now as head coach of the American team.We talked about all that when Friedel joined the show this Thanksgiving week, but we also got into a fascinating early chapter of his career. In 1995, he went off to Istanbul to play for Graeme Souness at Galatasaray. Along the way, he got a true taste of one of the world's most combustible football derbies, Galatasaray against Fenerbahce, the latest edition of which will play out this coming Monday.Friedel talked the derby, his times with Brian Clough and Kevin Keegan, and a bit about life in Istanbul.Get more sharp coverage of the world's game at TheFootballWeekend.com ↗️ Hosted on Acast. Could It Be Magic, the FA Cup podcast sponsored by Carling, returns as Joe Cole and Ashley Cole welcome Sean Dyche into the studio just days before he was appointed Nottingham Forest manager. They revisit Chesterfield's famous FA Cup semi-final run in 1997: the brilliant team talk by John Duncan before the game, the surprise pre-match call from Roy Keane, and the penalty he buried straight down the middle despite never having taken one before. They also discuss the return of long throws and set pieces to elite football and how Brian Clough's tactics at Nottingham Forest wouldn't look out of place in the modern game. Sean shares plenty of tales from his colorful playing and managerial career, including the time Arsène Wenger was served some dodgy red wine at Burnley and how Sean once turned up to a London nightclub in a tuk-tuk, only to meet Chris Eubank in his giant truck. Dyche lets us in to his world away from football and reveals what it's like to find yourself becoming a social media meme and being asked to FaceTime people's nans. He chats about his stint shadowing the Oxford boat crew while doing his pro licence, including the moment he met the Winklevoss twins without realising who they were until he watched The Social Network. JOIN MSC INSIDER BELOW: https://modernsoccercoach.mimentorportal.com/subscriptions As Martin O'Neill returns to Celtic Football Club, we revisit a powerful conversation that captures everything he stands for as a coach and leader. From his early days under Brian Clough to managing Leicester, Celtic, Aston Villa, and the Republic of Ireland, O'Neill has lived through every phase of football's evolution — and he's never lost sight of what truly matters. In this interview, Martin reflects on: The lessons from Brian Clough and why simplicity still wins in a complicated world. Rebuilding belief at Celtic, turning a 21-point deficit into a 6–2 victory over Rangers and a title-winning side. Managing upwards in the modern game, where CEOs, directors, and data often overshadow football people. Roy Keane's impact on culture, standards, and leadership inside the dressing room. The dangers of over-analysis, and why clarity and trust will always be the foundation of coaching. It's an honest, entertaining, and deeply relevant listen for any coach navigating today's game — reminding us that football is still, at its core, about people, relationships, and belief.
Michael Sheen is an award-winning actor. After finding his love for the stage with the West Glamorgan Youth theatre as a teenager, he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He spent the 1990s making a name for himself as a stage actor, shining in the classics from Romeo and Juliet to Peer Gynt as well as in 20th century masterpieces such as Look Back in Anger and Amadeus, receiving several Olivier Award nominations along the way.A relocation to the US in the early 2000s with his then partner, the actress Kate Beckinsale, and their young daughter Lily prompted a move into films. His breakthrough came in 2003 when he portrayed Tony Blair in a Stephen Frears film called The Deal. It was the beginning of what became an unlikely specialism: morphing into real people from recent history: Kenneth Williams, David Frost, Brian Clough, Chris Tarrant, and Prince Andrew – with two more outings as Tony Blair thrown in for good measure.Michael was born in Newport, South Wales, in February 1969, the eldest of two children to Meyrick and Irene. He grew up in Port Talbot from the age of eight and considers it his hometown. His first love was football, and he was spotted as youngster by an Arsenal talent scout to play for their youth team. His parents decided against moving the family to London and he turned to acting instead and graduated from RADA in 1991.Alongside the classic dramas, his range extends to appearing in fantasy and science fiction films such as The Twilight Saga and Tron: Legacy. Michael has said that the most meaningful project to him was a modern restaging of the passion play in Port Talbot in 2011, which involved the participation of a thousand local people, because it opened his eyes to the difficulties many of them were experiencing. He has since used his own money to fund the 2019 Homeless World Cup in Cardiff and set up an organisation which supports community groups. We all remember Brian Clough's infamous 44 days as manager of Leeds United, a fractious period of time which compared favourably with Liz Truss's time as Prime Minister of the UK - and of course the lettuce that lasted longer than either of them. Colin Shindler recalls with ghastly clarity Steve Coppell's 33 days in charge of the disaster that was Manchester City in 1996. Both these short-lived phenomena have been beaten very recently: not just by what last week with Ange Postecoglou's departure from Nottingham Forest but also by what happened at the start of this season – the sacking of Erik Ten Hag after just three competitive matches in charge of Bayer Leverkeusen. Jim White, Colin Shindler and Jon Holmes speculate as to what on earth Bayer Leverkusen could possibly have found out about Ten Hag after three matches that they didn't already know when they made the decision to hire him in the first place? Nottingham Forest pulled off a league double against Manchester United for the first time since they were managed by Brian Clough, and it was United academy product Anthony Elanga who got the early goal.Nuno's subsequent tactical switch and United's inability to break it down was as predictable as it was frustrating. Alejandro Garnacho showed his annoyance after several shots went astray, but a lack of goals from the whole team is becoming a big problem.Despite that, there's confidence for the derby at Old Trafford with City still not themselves and Erling Haaland ruled out.
