A brand new week is underway, which means the boys from the Real Life Podcast are back with a brand new episode to help you ease back into work life after another round of practice retirement. On today's show, the guys looked at Saturday's BOA, overreactions at this point in the season, and a whole lot more.To kick off the Monday episode of Real Life, the guys got started with a random conversation about the Swedish House Mafia and how they got back together for the paycheques. That led the guys to talk about artists performing at private events for all kinds of cash, and how crazy it must be to be at one of these small parties when Drake shows up. Getting back to sports, the guys then spent some time talking about soccer after both Wanye and Jay talked about wanting to be more involved in the sport leading up to Qatar. Leaning into the randomness, the boys then spent some time talking about an upcoming Jonah Hill movie that will see him profile the legendary golfer, John Daly. Can anyone picture Jonah Hill as John Daly? Getting back to Jay and Baggedmilk pressuring Tyler into coming to Calgary next weekend and where he's at with selling his Arkells tickets. Turning back to the Oilers, the guys looked at Saturday's snooze fest against the Blues and how Edmonton could not navigate the quicksand that is the St. Louis defence. Looking ahead at tonight's McDavid vs. Crosby matchup, the Oilers will have a completely different test against the Penguins. Regardless of the result, everyone is betting that tonight's game will be a whole lot more exciting than what we got on the weekend. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's hard not to be romantic about baseball. Just like it's hard not to be romantic about this movie. I feel like I say this a lot at the front of my podcasts, but hot damn, this is one of the greatest baseball movies – no, one of THE greatest movies ever made. This is one of those movies that just kind of snuck up out of nowhere and took all that watched it by complete surprise. Moneyball was nominated for best picture in 2012, and normally I wouldn't mention that, but this was in a small window of time post-LOTR where the nominations actually meant something and moviegoers actually knew what the movies were. (As a reference point, The King's Speech won the year before and it was up against the likes of 127 Hours, The Social Network, and Toy Story 3.) We'll see what our guest says today, but I don't really see this as a sports movie. It's instead a highly compelling thinking-man's drama. Or, taken even further, it's a business and money movie. But the title does sum up exactly what it is. It's about the dollar bills generated by MLB and how the finance side of it works. But it's also about taking chances and putting your neck on the line for something you believe in.  Brad Pitt's performance is nothing less than masterful, and to see a reigned in Jonah Hill is quite refreshing, yet he still shines as the comedic relief. This movie rests very easily in my top ten films of all time. Others may shift and come and go, but this one has a permanent spot. If you haven't seen 2011' Moneyball, get your ass into gear and treat yourself to one of the greatest dramas of your life.  Moneyball stars Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Robin Wright. Finally, a movie where I can pronounce all the names! It's based off the book by Michael Lewis, and written for the screen by Steven Zallian, Aaron Sorkin, and Stan Chervin. It's directed by Bennett Miller. On Rotten Tomatoes, Moneyball holds a 94% critics score, and an 86% audience score – one of the few times ever I find myself siding with the critics, yet I'm baffled why this isn't at least 98% on both fields.  Today I have with me an old, old, old friend of mine – and I don't mean age, because he's the same age as me, as we went to junior high and high school together – Brett Moore. Brett, it's been over 20 years since we've spoken or even seen each other in person, so I'm looking forward to catching up with you and swapping some memories as we discuss this flawless film. Share with us who you are, what you do for a living, and for fun. Questions About the Movie: The solution that Billy Beane implements seems so obvious in hindsight. Didn't anyone else see the importance of getting players on base before this was put into practice in 2002?  This movie is incredible in that it makes work meetings interesting. Beyond that, the whole movie feels unscripted and very real. Is that because of the writing by Aaron Sorkin, do you think, or because of the performances, particularly Brad Pitt's?  This isn't a sports movie - it's a business and economics movie. Are there any business movies that are as entertaining or well done?  Bill James is mentioned frequently in the movie as well as in the book. The movie says he was a security guard for a pork and beans factory. Can you tell us more about this man and how he really was the impetus of changing the game.  Questions for Application Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) says, "There is an epidemic failure within the game to understand what is really happening. And this leads people who run Major League Baseball teams to misjudge their players and mismanage their teams." What other institutions would you say have this same problem?  Billy was deeply haunted by his past. Is this what caused Billy to want the hard truth from Peter when he asked if he would have picked him for the draft? How can hearing the hard truth about ourselves really help us in the long run?  Is there anything you put your whole being into and failed? How did you come back from it? What's the best baseball stadium you've been to?  Follow Life Through the Big Screen on these following pages:InstagramFacebookTwitterThis episode was sponsored by Spur Creative

You likely already know Steve Madden's name, either from the iconic "Big Head Girl" commercial from the late '90s or from seeing it printed on the side of the shoes sitting in your closet. But if it's not for the shoes, you may have heard his name mumbled through the lips of a drugged-up Jonah Hill in the big-budget Martin Scorsese film The Wolf of Wall Street. Seemingly out of nowhere, Steve Madden became one of the biggest names in the shoe business of the '90s and early 2000s. But the company's meteoric rise to fame met a brick wall when Steve took some seriously bad financial advice from a childhood friend, resulting in criminal convictions and a few years in prison. Steve tells his side of the story and further exposes his struggles with drug addiction in the documentary film Maddman: The Steve Madden Story and his reveal-all book The Cobbler. Since his release from prison in 2005, Steve has worked hard to put his life in order and get his company back on the right path. I've known Steve for a while now, but it's been a real pleasure getting to know him better through this conversation, and I know you're going to enjoy listening to his story. In this episode of Journey to the Blue Sky, Arun and Patricia discuss about the 2008 Blue Sky Studios animated film Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who based on the 1954 book of the same name starring Jim Carrey, Steve Carrell, Carol Burnett, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, and Amy Poehler. An elephant named Horton sees a floating speck on a pink flower hearing voices not knowing that an entire civilization of Whos living in a town called Whoville live there. The mayor of Whoville, Ned McDodd, notices earthquakes and weather changes happening all of a sudden. When Horton and Major McNodd learn about one another, Horton tries to take the speck to a safe location and Major McNodd tries to convince the Whos to postpone the celebration of Whoville with no luck. Both are trying to convince everyone of the situation, but they don't believe them. When the movie premiered in theaters, it made over $298 million dollars out of a $85 million dollar budget receiving positive reviews after both the disappointment of Ice Age: The Meltdown and the critical bashing of the previous Dr. Seuss movie adaptation, The Cat in the Hat. What did Arun and Patricia think of the movie? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support
