Growing up gay in the 80's, in a conservative town the size of a dime while surrounded by Mormons and cowboys was about as fun as fiery diarrhea. This may have been why O'Dell (the host) went from a scared and confused kid, to a closeted, self-loathing and unintentionally homophobic young adult. With a little help from friends and a lot of therapy, he eventually blossomed into a slightly neurotic, mildly self-deprecating and eternally single adult. Maybe you can relate? On this show O'Dell will share stories from his life, chat about pop culture, look back at important events in LGBTQ+ history, and interview friends and allies involved in the community. We've come a long way, but the fight is far from over. Grab a snack and join O'Dell for a lot of talkin' and a little learnin'. You never know what you'll get from week to week, but whatever it is, it's safe to say you'll only be slightly disappointed. On this episode I spend some time chatting with queer Canadian author, 'Nathan Burgoine. We talk about what it was like for 'Nathan growing up, first kisses, coming out versus being outed, what it's like to be a "curb queer", his books and whether or not Canada really is better for LGBTQIA+ folks than the U.S. To learn more about 'Nathan and his books, https://apostrophen.wordpress.com ( check out his website.) On this episode I repurpose a couple of cases that Erin Stallings and I covered on our True Crime & Unsolved Mysteries podcast, "Six Degrees of WTF" - specifically crimes against trans individuals. We start with Erin's coverage of the disappearance of Sage Smith and then close things out with the unsolved murder of Rita Hester which prompted the Transgender Day of Remembrance. On this episode I speak with Elizabeth Seabolt-Esparza, a mental health therapist in Texas. I met Elizabeth in 2004 when I directed her in a production of Extremities. Thanks to the power of social media, we recently reconnected and I immediately invited her to come on the show. Elizabeth has a special story to share: Her father was gay, and she watched him struggle in life which is partly what led to her desire to become a therapist If you are part of the LGBTQIA+ community and live in Texas, and would like to speak with a therapist, Elizabeth is accepting new clients. https://www.houston-therapy.com/elizabeth-seabolt-esparza (You can find her here.) I'm back with another history lesson, and today I devote the entire episode to Alan Turing. His brilliant mind helped outsmart the Nazis during World War II and his developments in computer science paved the way for every electronic device that we use today. Sadly, Alan's life took a devastating turn when he was publicly outed and persecuted for being gay. It's time for more nuggets of pop culture with O'Dell & Erin. This one starts with a conversation about poppers and politics before we dive into what we've been watching this week. We discuss the documentary "Mormon No More", "Yellowjackets", "Heartstopper" "So You Think You Can Dance", and "Hacks". After the break we talk about how boring Real Housewives of Beverly Hills still is (and how much we can't stand Diana) and then we move into discussing how much we LOVE Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip, and our newfound adoration for Brandi Glanville. On this the day of "freedom" I spend some time talking about some of the 200+ anti-LGBTQ+ bills that lawmakers are trying to pass, and the role "Christians" play in all of it. Trigger warning: During the first half of this episode I talk about some of the bullying that I experienced growing up, and I use gay slurs when quoting some of the things that were said to me. So what does gay pride mean, and why is it important? We have lots to chat about in this supersized pride episode! I take a personal moment and kick things off discussing my earlier views of pride and how they have changed for the better. In the second half, I give a brief overview of what life used to be like for LGBTQ+ folks in the 60's and what led to the Stonewall riots. On this episode I interview my friend of 18 years, Michael Harren. Michael is a very talented composer, podcaster and music teacher living in Brooklyn. He's also a vegan and animal rights activist. We discuss what it was like for Michael growing up gay in a conservative Texas town, his time spent on tour with Sandra Bernhard, his most recent performance piece, and why it's okay to not always be okay. On this episode you'll meet me, O'Dell, the self-deprecating weirdo and host of the show. I just turned 50, and in the days leading up to that moment, I did a lot of soul searching and one of the things I reflected on the most was how I moved through life in a way that allowed me to not fully acknowledge my sexuality, and in turn, not accept myself for who I really am. Today, that will begin to change. I'm interviewed by Erin Stallings (one of my best friends from my time in Houston). While we only scratch the surface, you at least get a good idea of what things were like for me at times in my weird, sometimes scary, but wonderful life.
