On this week's show we rank our favorite Streaming Services. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: More than 25% of viewers aren't watching live TV anymore Tubi breaks the 100 million monthly active user mark Netflix to Introduce Live TV Channels in France NCIS: Tony & Ziva Sets September Premiere Date on Paramount+ Other: Panasonic DVD Recorders on ebay Panasonic DMR-EH75VS DVD recorder with 80GB hard drive and HiFi VCR, plus DVD video upconversion at Crutchfield The 10 Best DVD Recorders of 2025 (Reviews) - FindThisBest "It's Official: Streaming Is Now the King of TV The Definitive Streaming Service Ranking We received an email from a listener named Scott that pointed us to an article titled ”The Definitive Streaming Service Ranking” written by Josh Rosenberg and published in Esquire magazine. In the article he ranks the top seven streaming services. We'll go through his picks from seven to one. And then we'll give our rankings. 7 Amazon Prime Video - The main criterion for ranking streaming services is whether they offer at least one new, worthwhile show each month. Prime Video falls short, as it doesn't consistently deliver high-quality new TV content. Instead, it focuses on being a hub for accessing other subscriptions, with shows like Reacher, Fallout, and The Boys feeling like bonuses for Amazon Prime's free shipping rather than a compelling reason to subscribe for streaming alone. 6 Peacock - Peacock is a top choice for reality-TV fans, offering Bravo's full lineup, including Real Housewives, Love Island USA, Below Deck, Top Chef, and Watch What Happens Live. It also hosts NBC's library with classics like The Office, Parks & Recreation, New Girl, Scrubs, and Law & Order, plus Yellowstone due to an exclusive deal. Its appeal lies in its sitcom and reality-TV vault, and it's the streaming home for the Olympics, though that's only every two years. Fans might find it worth a high price, though it's currently much less than $100 a month. 5 Disney/Hulu/ESPN+ - The Disney/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle is perceived as a single streaming service due to its long-standing integration, with Disney enhancing this by adding Hulu and ESPN+ tiles to the Disney+ home screen for seamless access. Each service offers unique strengths: Disney+ excels in Marvel, Star Wars, and children's content; Hulu features FX shows like The Bear and Shōgun, plus ABC's lineup, including Abbott Elementary; and ESPN+ remains a leader in live sports despite growing competition. Their combined appeal keeps them competitive, as they are stronger together than individually. 4 Netflix - Netflix benefits from long-term subscriber relationships, with users browsing its platform like they once did with cable TV. However, its content quality is declining, with more misses than hits. The upcoming conclusion of major shows like Squid Game and Stranger Things in 2025 could further challenge its ability to retain subscribers. 3 Paramount+ - Paramount+ benefits from Taylor Sheridan's popular shows like Yellowstone, Landman, and 1923, and its merger with Showtime has brought quality series such as MobLand and Yellowjackets. However, the streaming service struggles to justify its subscription cost as essential, with its success hinging on the delivery of Sheridan's planned spin-off universe. 2 Apple TV+ - Apple TV+ has significantly improved its content in 2025, with successful shows like Severance season 2, The Studio (Seth Rogen), Your Friends and Neighbors (Jon Hamm), and Stick (Owen Wilson). Previously, subscribing only for specific shows was advisable, but now, due to consistent high-quality releases with A-list talent, keeping the subscription active is recommended. If this trend continues, Apple TV+ will remain a strong competitor in the streaming market. 1 HBO Max - HBO tops the power ranking due to its consistent delivery of high-quality TV shows that justify the subscription cost. With a business model focused on quality since its launch over 50 years ago, HBO has aired acclaimed series like The Pitt, The White Lotus, The Last of Us, The Rehearsal, and Hacks in the first half of 2025. Its extensive library includes some of the greatest shows and movies, such as Goodfellas. While Netflix prioritizes quantity, HBO Max excels in quality.

The success of the latest Final Destination movie is one of the biggest surprises of the first part of the year. Even more shocking is a reported incident from Argentina that is one of the truest cases of life imitating art ever seen. Deadly truth, false internet reporting, or best marketing ever? We finally saw our first look at the It prequel series Welcome to Derry and neither of us were particularly impressed. Of course, we will be watching the HBO Max show, but the trailer was very disappointing. It as a little too familiar. That being said, we have high hopes for the show's potential. We have championed indie horror on our humble little podcast for years. And since we have watched so many small budget films, we understand some of the constraints that come with them. Production values are lower, actors are not as well known, and there is less access to resources. Knowing this, we adjust our expectations and are willing to give the benefit of the doubt. One thing we will not forgive is poor writing. A Hard Place is a decent enough idea. Criminals are caught in the middle of a war between two monster factions. There is just so much going on that nothing leaves an impact. Add in the fact that none of the many characters are developed and the end result is a film that feels pointless. For years, people have complained about the number of remakes and superhero movies. “We want new stuff!” they all scream. This is not limited to a vocal minority. Critics include it in reviews, film fans discuss it while trying to figure out their best Wes Anderson movie, and even the average person on the street has strong feelings about the topic. And then a movie like Companion comes along. Topical, cast filled with young stars, and a director working on his first feature film. And nobody went to see it. But maybe it wasn't that good? We talk about the performances, themes, and tone while trying to figure out why no one went out to see a movie that was exactly what they wanted. Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson are the creators, showrunners, writers, and executive producers of the hit Showtime drama series, YELLOWJACKETS. YELLOWJACKETS, equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama, is the saga of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they've attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over. YELLOWJACKETS stars Emmy Award-nominee Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, and Emmy Award-nominee Christina Ricci. In this interview, we talk about the pros and cons of working as a writing partnership, the challenges and rewards of writing original content versus writing for existing shows, what they look for when hiring writers for their staff, the specific difficulties of writing a show with two timelines, and much more. Welcome to week 1* of our new theme “No. No. No. For the last time, you can't sing Prince on the show!” - Horror musicals! Courtesy of Cody we'll be doing our darnedest to not burst out into any legally actionable songs during the recordings of these episodes. It isn't fair, but we love him all the same. We talk about a handful of current releases, some old favorites, and then we get to “Life at Last” as we discuss the Brian de Palma cult classic, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE! *We technically broke protocol and release schedule to bring you our SINNERS discussion, which we deemed as mostly eligible for this theme! This week, we're taking aim at SERIAL SLAYER (a.k.a. CLAUSTROPHOBIA, 2003), a tense little thriller that proves broad daylight won't save you when there's a crossbow-wielding psycho perched on the roof. Three coworkers—Melanie Lynskey (before she was cool on YELLOWJACKETS), Sheeri Rappaport (CSI), and Mary Lynn Rajskub (24)—find themselves trapped in a house while a silent, unseen killer picks them off one by one. No phones, no way out, and no idea who's next. Horror fans, take note: Judith O'Dea (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD) makes a cameo! Because if anyone knows how to handle relentless terror, it's her. Is this indie thriller a forgotten gem or just another early 2000s curiosity? Tune in as we break it down, discuss the kills, and decide if crossbows should be banned from horror movies forever.

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, networks have been on a tear killing TV characters as of late. Shows like 9-1-1, NCIS, The Last of Us, The White Lotus, Bosch: Legacy, Yellowjackets, and the list goes on. But were these deaths necessary? Creatives claim it is a necessary storytelling device, but is it really? If extreme shock is the only way to rev up your fanbase, does it mean that perhaps the show needs better writers? OR do these deaths truly feel tangible and effective? We dive into this topic with mild spoilers for the shows mentioned, so proceed lightly. Also, we determine what TV series would be better if they killed off a lead TV character. Also on this week's podcast: Donald Trump proclaims tariffs for Hollywood films shot abroad, reviews of Clown in a Cornfield, Fight or Flight, Summer of 69, plus we dive into RUST starring Alec Baldwin, directed by Joel Souza this is the film that resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. In this episode, Yellowjackets and The Originals actor Steven Krueger takes us on the unexpected journey from aspiring lawyer to full-time actor and, more recently, director. He opens up about the turning point when he realized he didn't want to be a lawyer — he wanted to be James Spader on Boston Legal — and how a brutally honest producer's advice shifted his mindset from “dabbling” in acting to making it a serious pursuit. Krueger gets candid about the value of life experience and education in shaping his craft, and how he built his career brick by brick — including the multiple rounds of auditions it took to land his breakout role on The Originals. Steven shares hilarious and humbling audition stories, like bombing a Percy Jackson read with a full-blown Cyclops voice, and lessons learned about navigating an industry that's equal parts craft, luck, and timing. He also dives into his evolution as an artist, from feeling creatively stagnant on long-running shows to pushing himself into directing his first short film. These are the unforgettable stories that landed Steven Krueger right here. In between those stops Anderson served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Cambodia from 2012 to 2014. Anderson is a 2010 graduate of Georgia Tech where he received his degree in Social Science, Technology and Culture, and also earned a certificate in Business Management. As a walk-on for the Yellow Jackets, Anderson lettered three years and served one season as a student assistant under head coach Paul Hewitt.Anderson is the grandson of legendary, Hall of Fame, college basketball coach Charles "Lefty" Driesell, who retired in 2003 after 41 years as a head coach at Davidson, Maryland, James Madison and Georgia State. On this episode Mike and Tysor discuss Tysor's coaching experiences from high school to collegiate levels. We've said it before, but the 90s were the peak time for "chick"-fronted alternative rock bands. There were so many good ones and among them was that dog. fronted by this week's guest, Anna Waronker. They only managed three albums, but they made a great impression. Anna put out a couple solo albums, but she also pivoted to making music for TV which she's done successfully for a while. She currently does the music for Yellowjackets with musical partner Craig Wedren of fellow 90s survivors Shudder to Think. We discuss her whole career, her legendary dad Lenny (who was just accepted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame), her famous friends like Maya Rudolph and Jack Black, her husband Steve McDonald of the band Redd Kross (she did the music for the recent documentary on the band which is now available to rent at the link below), and a ton more. She's the best! www.reddkrossfilm.com/watch www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod
Yellowjackets features some of the very best ensemble casting across the board, but there's no denying we got an extra special duo in Liv Hewson and Lauren Ambrose. At the start of the Showtime and Paramount+ series, Van Palmer was not meant to make it out of the wilderness alive. However, thanks to Hewson's screen presence and creative spark, it became abundantly clear that they deserved more time to shine. Not only did the showrunners shift gears and have Van survive the wolf attack in Season 1, Episode 7, but at the start of Season 2, they revealed that Van makes it home from wilderness with the introduction of Ambrose's present-day version of the character. From that point on, we've enjoyed a breathtaking level of connectivity between the two actors. However, as of Season 3, Episode 9, “How the Story Ends,” the time of Van Palmer being a dual role has ended. The character doesn't succumb to her cancer diagnosis, but rather, is stabbed by Hilary Swank's present-day Melissa. It's a crushing end for a fan-favorite character, one that Ambrose admits, doesn't offer closure, but because it was never meant to. However, Ambrose herself has found peace in the feeling that she “was just handing [Van] back to Liv.”With all of Yellowjackets Season 3 available to stream on Paramount+, and with the show's Emmy campaign picking up steam, I got the opportunity to welcome Ambrose to Collider Ladies Night. During our 40-minute chat, we revisited some pivotal moments of her career, many of which pointed toward a deep appreciation of the rehearsal process. And, it turns out, that love of rehearsing is what helped her and Swank figure out how to play Van's death and deliver a scene that feels “crackling and real and exciting and weird.” Hosted on Acast.
