Public education was nice while we had it, too bad it's being lit on fire (like everything else). And yes, it is James Dobson's fault (also like everything else). Today, Jake and Brooke explore Dobson's influence in the homeschooling movement - and hear from the big D himself. So, you have that to look forward to in this episode I guess.References:Campbell, F. Joining the Marines after dropping out of college, Tyler Stallings was the old man in the group of recruits that he enlisted with. That wasn't a bad thing though as the Texas native admitted that he had some growing up to do and was forced to do it quickly. It turned into one of the best experiences of his life and helped mold him into the man he is today. One of the things that he missed the most while in the service was the sport of archery and being in the outdoors. It was there that the idea behind StealthRig was born and the rest, as they say, is history. Fast forward to the 2024 Archery Trade Association Show in St. Louis this past January and Stallings found himself onstage accepting The Impact Award for Best New Product. Beating out over 150 other items launched at the show, the modular bino harness system is unique in that it features a steel plate on the back, allowing you to attach your bow to it and navigate hands free in any environment.I had the pleasure of catching up with Tyler on the show floor as well as seeing him at Mission 28 here in Wisconsin in April. He and his brother in law attended our private event at Vortex Optics and made the trip up to the HHA factory for a tour later that week. Continuing our series about Flipping The Kill Switch, we're talking to Jesse Stallings of Louisiana. This series truly is about regular folks who have seen a sudden influx in success, and we want to find out how. After a few years of consistency, it's safe to say someone has something figured out. Like many of us, Jesse's journey brought him to scouting more than you hunt, and putting himself IN the game even when odds are stacked against him. There's something to be said for just walking when you don't know what to do. Not seeing deer? Just walk. Not finding sign? Keep walking. It's a simple concept, yet even mobile hunters get into the routine of hunting the same tree over and over. For Jesse, the flip switched started when he kicked that routine to the curb and just kept pounding ground until he finally started putting pieces together. For so many, hunting turns into a spectator sport when it's meant to be experienced in the middle of the action! This is going to be a continued theme for us this summer. If you've got a "Kill Switch Moment" you think other hunters would find value in, send us a message on Fb or IG and share it with us! Let's Talk About Myths, Baby! Greek & Roman Mythology Retold
Revisiting the silliest epic of them all... We all know the famed battle of Achaean and Trojans, but what about the equally epic battle between the Frogs and the Mice? CW/TW: far too many Greek myths involve assault. Given it's fiction, and typically involves gods and/or monsters, I'm not as deferential as I would be were I referencing the real thing. Sources: select research by August Guszkowski; The Battle Between the Frogs and Mice, translated by A.E. Stallings; The Homeric Battle of the Frogs and Mice, edited by Joel Christensen and Erik Robinson. A. E. Stallings is a poet and translator mining the classical world and traditional poetic techniques to craft works that evoke startling insights about contemporary life. In both her original poetry and translations, Stallings exhibits a mastery of highly structured forms (such as sonnets, couplets, quatrains, and sapphics) and consummate skill in creating new combinations of meter, rhyme, and syntax into distinctive, emotionally compelling verse. Trained in classical Latin and Greek and currently living in Athens, she brings a wide knowledge of Greco-Roman literature, art, and mythology to bear on her imaginative explorations of contemporary circumstances and concerns. In Hapax (2006), Stallings imbues figures and events from classical drama and mythology with a modern sensibility. "First Love," written as a multiple-choice quiz, intertwines the Persephone myth with a chilling account of infatuation, and "XII Klassikal Lymnaeryx" emphasizes the satiric edge to Greek myth through a series of limericks in witty, unexpected diction. For her ambitious translation of De Rerum Natura (The Nature of Things, 2007), Stallings rendered Lucretius's epic-length treatise on the nature of reality into rhyming fourteeners. The unusual meter and colloquial language she employs capture every cadence of Lucretius's enthusiasm for his subject while also making the complexities of his argument easily understandable. Through her technical dexterity and graceful fusion of content and form, Stallings is revealing the timelessness of poetic expression and antiquity's relevance for today.-bio via MacArthur Foundation Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe
