There’s been mounting concern in recent years about the harms of social media use for kids. The sites can be addictive, ripe for cyberbullying and contribute to increased rates of body dysmorphia, anxiety and depression. The growing evidence has led at least a dozen states to pass laws attempting to restrict access to online platforms for kids. The Kids Off Social Media Act, a bipartisan bill in the Senate, would bar minors under 13 from social media. But despite the risks, there can be benefits to finding communities online, especially for LGBTQ+ teens and young adults. A recent report jointly released by the Born This Way Foundation and the nonprofit Hopelab found that young people in these demographics felt significantly safer expressing their identities online compared to in-person spaces.

We are experiencing a youth mental health crisis. Young people worldwide are increasingly struggling to manage the escalating stress and complications of everyday life. In 2021, 42% of high school students reported feeling so sad or hopeless for two consecutive weeks that they would stop engaging in their usual activities, up from 26% in 2009. Is there a way to eliminate the stigma around mental health and make kindness cool? We spoke to Claudia-Santi F. Fernandes, Ed.D., LPC, MCHES, and Rahul Rangan, MBBS of Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, about the ways peer-to-peer support can benefit today's youth, the vital mental health resources needed in schools, and the impact of Born This Way Foundation's Be There Certificate and their Channel Kindness program on building a kinder and braver world.

As one of the world's best-selling musicians, Lady Gaga has set the musical bar high. Since her debut album, The Fame (2008), she has sold more than 124 million records and scooped numerous awards, including twelve Grammy Awards and eighteen MTV Music Video Awards. Yet she is much more than a musician. At the helm of the Haus of Gaga--a close-knit circle of behind-the-scenes creatives--Lady Gaga is a performance artist like no other; her forward-thinking fashions and innovations mark her out as the ultimate maverick. Recently, she has reinvented herself as an accomplished jazz performer, dueting with legendary singer Tony Bennett on Cheek to Cheek (2014) and Love For Sale (2021), while also proving herself a consummate actor with lead roles in A Star Is Born (2018) and House of Gucci (2021). And with her advocacy for LGBT rights and active championing of kindness via the Born This Way Foundation, co-founded with her mother Cynthia Germanotta in 2011, it's clear to see why her fans adore her. Episode 233: Little Bites of Bravery - Life HackNovember is a set of 3 episodes called 15-minute life hacks. I'm calling the November nudges. Each episode is a quick reminder of a life tool to inspire and help you connect to the world around you as you create your best life story on purpose.Today is week 3 and we're all about courage. It's called Little Bites of Bravery. This life hack is about how to tackle the scarier, bigger things in our lives, and Jessica Burrell, owner of Life Amplified is with me for all 3 episodes.Come with us for a quickie. This one's about taking it one step at a time.Tune into the audio program for my discussion with Jess about the importance of being brave - even in small increments. We talk about things like:What is Bravery? — the quality or state of having or showing mental or moral strength to face danger, fear, or difficulty.I first heard the saying “Little bites of bravery,” from Lady Gaga on her interview with Oprah on May 31, 2022; Your Life In Focus TourLady Gaga started the Born This Way Foundation, (Foundation to support mental health) they encourage courage with “Little Bites of Bravery” She said, “Just be a little braver every day. If you feel like you can't do something, just go take a little bite of bravery. I promise you before you know it, you're taking a big ol' bite of bravery.”Be Brave for 10 seconds. What can I step into for 10 seconds? Think about that...A couple quotes we like on this topic: “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” ― Nelson Mandela“It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.” ― Theodore Roosevelt Tune in while I tell the story: The GiantI found this story in the book -Lead with a Story, by Paul Smith. (American Management Association, 2012, Pg 144-145)Once upon a time, in a land far away, there lived a very bright and trustworthy young woman. Having learned all she could in her own village, she set out to explore the neighboring lands. After some time, she came upon a great city surrounded by a huge castle wall. “Surely I can learn something new from the people here,” she thought to herself. But after entering the city, she found its people too frightened and depressed to share any wisdom. “Why is everyone here so sad?” she asked. One trembling citizen answered, “Today is the day the giant comes.”“Giant?” she scoffed in disbelief. “There's no such thing as giants.”;“Oh, but there is,” came the response. “He stands over 10 feet tall! So tall, he can't rightly be called a man at all.”Skeptical, but intrigued, the young woman pleaded, “Tell me more of this giant.”So the frightened citizen nervously explained to her, “Every year, on the same day, and at the same hour, he comes down from the mountain where he lives. He stands at the edge of the clearing and yells, ‘Send out your bravest man for me to fight, or I will knock down these walls and kill everyone inside!' Each year, one poor valiant soul steps out to face the giant and there he stands, mesmerized by the giant's enormity and the impossible task ahead. Every year the giant slays the poor warrior where he stands before he even draws his sword. The warrior doesn't even move. It's as if he is hypnotized.”Eyes wide with fascination, the woman begs, “Can I see this giant?”“The only way to see the giant,” the citizen explained “is to face him in battle.”“Eager to learn, the woman responded, “Then that is what I will do.”Shortly thereafter the voice of the giant rang through the village and the woman stepped out...
I have the most heart-opening and vulnerable conversation with my friends Jenna Kim and Tristan Cabral about navigating the unknown, coming out, and family relationships as queer Christians with an evolving concept of and relationship to faith. It's the longest podcast conversation I've ever had and one of the most impactful. Every part of it is so intentional and necessary to share. We talk about how challenging it was to grow up seeing zero representation of people who are like us, and how we bravely had to be the examples we wish we saw around us and create a life for ourselves as queer humans. Jenna and Tristan openly share the pressures they faced and still face of feeling like they need to be “perfect” as the oldest children in Asian households of faith. We also dive into why it was so hard for us to come out to our parents. In the last 20 minutes of this conversation, we share ways you can become a better actionable ally to the LGBTQIA+ community.Jenna is proudly Korean-American. She's the oldest of four girls and a pastor's kid. Jenna works as a production supervisor at Disney TV Animation. Tristan is a first generation Filipino-American working as a storyboard artist at Nickelodeon. He is very proud of his identity as a Filipino immigrant story teller and dreams to one day be a TV Director on a cartoon that heavily focuses on cultural intersections. This is a trigger warning. We do talk about suicide in this episode. If you're struggling right now, please know that you are so freaking loved, and the world is more magical and vibrant with you in it. If you need direct support, call the national suicide and crisis lifeline at 988. Born This Way Foundation was founded by Stefani Germanotta, also known to the world as Lady Gaga, and her mother Cynthia Germanotta in 2012 to raise awareness of the need for mental health and empowerment support amongst the youth population. Generous love is the theme of this episode.Josie Ross-McCloud and I get candid about the complex relationship between a queer child and their heterosexual parents and family. Josie's incredible child Salem is a part of the LGBTQIA+ community. They identify as non-binary trans masculine. In this conversation, Josie holds the most loving space for me to talk about one of the most turbulent and transformative times in my life — coming out to my mom at age 22 in 2015. I share a few vivid experiences from my youth that pushed me deep in the closet and made it seem impossible for me to come out — and I share the shocking way my mom found out I was gay. Josie kindly offers me the opportunity to go back in time and re-do the coming out conversation I had with my mom. This was extremely moving and healing. We also discuss:The need all humans have for belonging. How dark and light can co-exist.The challenges of being queer and transgender and how we can become better allies. And how you can create more inclusive, equitable, and affirming spaces within your home and community for the LGBTQIA+ community today.Josie has navigated a 30+ year career in textiles and apparel as a designer and leader of teams. She's a wife and mother who loves and celebrates all humans. Her life mission is to continually choose love over fear, to be radically inclusive, and contribute to helping people feel acceptance. This is who she is to me as a friend and in this episode big time.Resources:Learn more about my Marketing Masterclass on 12.1.22!Organizations that support the LGBTQIA+ community and its youth: The Trevor Project, PFLAG, GLAAD, Born This Way Foundation.Connect with me @lucca_petrucci on Instagram or TikTok. Dorinda Medley is an Entrepreneur and TV personality. She is a long time member of RHONY and recently RHUGT season 2 based at her home Blue Stone Manor in the Berkshires. She is very involved in her favorite charities and in 2021 released her auto biography Make It Nice. Born in the Berkshires in Massachusetts, Dorinda graduated from college and arrived in New York City, working in the showrooms of Liz Claiborne. She met her first husband and followed him to London to start a family and eventually her own cashmere company, DCL Cashmere. Many high-profile London clients like Princess Diana and Joan Collins became acquaintances, and soon, Dorinda left her mark on London society. Ten years in London also brought her a daughter, Hannah, a divorce, and a wish to return to New York to figure out life in the city as a single mom. In 2005, Dorinda met and married financier Dr. Richard Medley, a former Washington power broker and respected speechwriter to congresswoman and vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, and together they worked on fund-raising for charitable causes with the likes of Bishop Desmond Tutu, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Secretary Madeline Albright, and President Bill and Secretary Hillary Clinton. After the tragic loss of their beloved Richard in 2011, Dorinda and Hannah found strength in each other and in their loved ones to overcome the radical changes of losing a husband, friend, companion, and father figure. Through perseverance and support from her close friends, Dorinda climbed right back to the top of New York society. Dorinda is always directing her energy and focus into her home, family and friends, church, social engagements, and love for pop culture. In 2019, Dorinda reignited her passion for teaching aerobics, creating and touring with her interactive workout class Dorobics to great success. She continuously gives back to her favorite charitable organizations like Ali Forney Center, Born This Way Foundation, Prevention, Joy.J Initiative, Ronald McDonald House, NYLovesKids.org and Gabrielle's Angel Foundation. Dorinda's passion for entertaining was deeply enhanced with the purchase of Blue Stone Manor, a nine-bedroom Stanford White estate in her native Great Barrington. With a recent flood at the estate, Dorinda was forced to renovate and restore the historic property to get it back to its former glory. Nothing gives Dorinda more pleasure than a weekend or holiday spent with great company, home-cooked meals, and the festive, personal touches she is known for. She enjoys the theater, the beach, the mountains, fabulous parties, a great dirty martini, and all types of fashion—both high-end and high-street—and considers all of her pieces collector's items. Thanks for tuning into the Scale Your Small Business Podcast with your host, Jillian Flodstrom! Today's guest is Elyse Notarianni, a writer with a passion for all things digital. As the President and Founder of Townie Creative digital media marketing agency, Elyse is making her way in both the digital marketing and writing worlds. She's here today to break down how to easily break into the digital marketing space. Elyse comes from a space of high-end journalism, writing cover stories on celebrities like Queen Latifah for print magazines to marketing summer camps for a big summer camp company and major sports teams. She's worked with Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation, co-authoring a New York Times Best Seller, “Channel Kindness.” We all want to grow our business. But where do we start? Elyse reminds us to get back to basics. It's about ensuring you have everything available to people to make visiting your business and working with you as easy as possible. A clean website with information on what you do and how to contact you are the foundation. From there, it's building a brand, which isn't as complicated as some make it. Develop a social media strategy that provides value and allows people to create a community around what you do. It's not about showing off. It's not about pretty pictures. It's not about likes. The best place to invest your money when you're looking to grow your online presence is in people. People who can do what you need and are exceptionally good at it. While it's easy to believe we can do everything ourselves, experts in their field will bring an incredible amount of value to your brand. It's okay to have a simple social media presence. It doesn't have to be perfect! Create a calendar, put three posts on it every week. One post is an informational post about what you do, what your services are, and what sets you apart. The next is an educational post that gives value to your customer that offers them something for free. Then something entertaining! Batch your posts so you're only spending a few hours a month creating (that time will go down as you get better at this sort of thing) and use a scheduler to get your posts out consistently. Start simple with static posts, then once you're more comfortable, dip your toes into video content.
