Welcome to the Season 6 Premiere of Decorating the Set: From Hollywood to Your Home with Beth Kushnick! We kick off the new season with a fantastic interview with Production Designer and Beth collaborator, Michael Fitzgerald. From his teenage days interning at Shakespeare Santa Cruz to his collaborations with Beth on Rare Objects and Starz's Run The World and, to most recently, working on Disney's fantastic 2024 film, Out of My Mind, Michael has seemingly done it all in the business. We are so lucky for him to bring us his love of production design and his boundless passion and creativity. A must listen to episode to begin the new season! The Interview with Michael begins at Time Code: 6:06 Join the Decorating the Set Community by subscribing to our Official Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/decoratingthesetpodcast)! Interact with Beth, Caroline, Producer Mike, and all of the DTS listeners! GUEST BIO: MICHAEL FITZGERALD Production Designer Michael Fitzgerald is a California native, having begun as a teenager interning for Shakespeare Santa Cruz and regional theater companies, he continued his exploration of theater and set design at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. His subsequent move into the realm of feature films allowed him to nurture close collaborations with directors, a creative relationship that he values immensely. His recent forays in the documentary world have also enabled him to bring the directors' very personal visions to the screen. Michael is currently working on the documentary series People of the West, recounting and visualizing the rich and complex history of California's native peoples. Out of My Mind, is Michael's third feature film collaboration with director Amber Sealey, after the Ted Bundy prison drama No Man of God (2021) starring Elijah Wood. Amber and Michael met at Shakespeare Santa Cruz as teenagers! Out of My Mind (2024) is Disney's very first film featuring a nonverbal lead actor with cerebral palsy. The challenge for Michael was two-fold: to create realistic spaces at the character's home, school environments and other locations, and also to make every working set completely accessible, to accommodate the numerous actors in the cast with disabilities. Michael has always had a strong intuition for how to best bring a story to life, creating worlds that are visually authentic and in synch with the tone of each project. In this episode of Money on My Mind, I answer Bowen Bergenfield's question: “Should you invest or use a high-yield savings account (HYSA) for a big purchase?” I break down the decision using S&P 500 historical data, explain the 5-year rule for saving vs. investing, and share my experiences to help you make the best financial choice. This episode is all about using index funds for short-term goals, and why it's usually better to stick with high-yield savings accounts (HYSAs) if you're planning for anything less than 5 years out. We're diving into the data to help you make the most of your savings and minimize risk when you're saving up for something big. Key Talking Points of the Episode 00:00 Introduction 01:17 The 5-year rule: Why 5 years is the tipping point for saving vs. investing 02:18 S&P 500 historical risk and return from 1926 to 2024 04:18 The risk of having 1 in 4 chances of losing money in a one-year period 05:59 Why it makes sense to invest long-term 07:16 What you can use your HYSA for 08:02 When to consider alternatives like CDs for short-term goals Quotables “For any goal under five years, I always use a high-yield savings account—no question.” “If you need the money in the next few years, don't gamble it. Protect it in a safe account.” “Focus on your goal, stay disciplined, and don't try to outsmart the market for short-term savings.” Links https://bookwithbudgetdog.com/ped Budgetdog https://budgetdog.com

No matter where you live in Louisiana, it's Mardi Gras time! Carnival is when we all get to suspend our disbelief, don a mask, do or be something outrageous. This week, we explore the many ways people celebrate the season. First, we hear from Abby Roniger, author of the colorful new children's book, Carnival Time in My Mind, which depicts the joy and excitement of being a kid at Mardi Gras. The book will bring back memories for anyone lucky enough to have grown up in New Orleans and is a lovely introduction to the celebration for kids everywhere. Then, author and photographer Sally Asher takes a break from her professional endeavors to talk about the various ways she celebrates Carnival – including roller skating down St. Charles Avenue, riding high atop a parade float, and dancing in the street. More importantly, she shares her very specific dining and drinking preferences during each of the season's big events. And Louisiana cultural scholar John LaFleur joins us to talk about the Courir de Mardi Gras, a ritual that takes place in rural Creole and Cajun parishes. In this episode of Money on My Mind, I dive into one of the most common (and urgent) financial questions: Is the market going to crash? One of our listeners, Stephen Lundy, asks whether he should be worried, how to secure his investments, and whether moving to bonds is the right move. Instead of focusing on fear, I break down what truly builds wealth: long-term strategy, understanding risk, and taking consistent action. We'll break down the Wealth Triangle, the risks of market timing, and why dollar-cost averaging is key—even in volatility. I'll also share data on how missing a few top market days can cost you millions. If you're unsure about investing, this episode will give you the clarity to stay the course and avoid costly emotional decisions. Key Talking Points of the Episode 00:00 Introduction 01:23 Is the market going to crash? 02:23 Why fear-based investing leads to bad decisions 05:21 How market volatility tricks investors into losing money 06:45 The Wealth Triangle 09:23 The importance of mental fortitude 12:24 Building an automated system to generate cash flow 14:22 The real definition of the stock market 16:37 The fundamentals of investing that you should understand 19:16 Understanding the importance of risk management 24:21 How missing the best 10 days of the market can sink your money 28:01 Why market timing does not work 30:31 Developing the right mindset towards investing 32:27 How waiting could impact your returns https://bookwithbudgetdog.com/ped Quotables “The market isn't some mystical force—it's people, businesses, and the economy. Unless humans stop working and innovating, the market won't just disappear.” “If you wait to invest because you're scared, you're literally throwing away millions of dollars over time.” “You don't build wealth by reacting to fear—you build it by making smart, consistent moves over time.” Links Budgetdog https://budgetdog.com
Welcome to A Peace of My Mind, a project that uses storytelling and art to rediscover what connects us. I'm John Noltner, the founder and director of A Peace of My Mind and I have the good luck to travel the country and the world interviewing people to help reveal the beauty and wisdom that is all around us….if we choose to see it.This new season of the podcast is called Sobr. S-O-B-R and we are exploring stories of addiction and recovery. I stopped drinking on August 10, 2022. It was the day I turned 55-1/2. And now I am gathering the stories of others who have decided that sobriety…for them…is easier than moderation. Whether their addiction was alcohol or drugs…these are stories of people who found a way to make a change in their lives when their lifestyles were no longer serving them. The road is not always easy and the path to recovery is not always a straight line. But there is always hope and tomorrow is always a new day. So together, we are going to explore the struggles, celebrate the victories, and reaffirm that we all have choices to make along the way. Welcome to A Peace of My Mind. Welcome to SOBR. I'm glad you're here.

Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Eli Lake. Lake is a columnist with the Free Press and also a contributing editor at Commentary. Find him online at the Free Press or @EliLake on Twitter/X.Eli's Music Pick: Stevie WonderIt's time to sing some songs in the key of life as we tackle the amazing and iconic second half of Stevie Wonder's career. From his emergence as Motown's first truly singular independent artist in in 1972, with Music of My Mind, Wonder blazed a path through the musical Seventies crossing over successfully into ever musical genre, to the point where Paul Simon infamously thanked him -- when accepting a “Best Album” Grammy in 1976 -- for not putting out an album in 1975. Stevie owned the American 1970s commercially and artistically in a way that few other of his era did -- David Bowie is a strange but apposite analogue for his effect on British culture of that era -- and even if he tailed off into pleasant innocuousness from the Eighties onward, his musical legacy is deathless. So once again, there's no need for a lengthy introduction to this (refreshingly brisk!) episode: Everybody knows who Stevie Wonder is, and unless you were born or moved here only five years ago, you will spend nearly half of this episode dancing out of your shoes. Isn't it lovely?
In this episode of Money on My Mind, I answer a question from one of my Budgetdog Academy OGs, Joe Sullivan, about the step-by-step process of starting a business. Whether you're dusting off an old business idea or just getting serious about entrepreneurship, this no-fluff episode breaks down six essential steps—from finding your niche to scaling—without the distractions of logos, websites, or admin tasks. I'm sharing hard-learned lessons on why most people aren't cut out for entrepreneurship, common mistakes new business owners make, and what truly matters when starting out. Ready to stop talking and start doing? This episode's for you. Key Talking Points of the Episode 00:00 Introduction 01:29 The harsh truth: 95% of people aren't built to start a business—and why that's okay. 03:28 Why your niche, product, and real results matter more than branding 07:28 Proving your concept and providing services that will make money 09:30 Making your business repeatable without trading time for money 12:13 Simple scales, fancy fails: Why overcomplicating your business is a recipe for disaster 14:02 Focusing on sales and marketing 17:41 Hiring talent from networking instead of job boards 22:12 Learning to delegate to scale your business the right way 23:14 Systemizing your business through SOPs and other tools 31:36 The importance of communication within your team Quotables “Ideas are pointless. Everyone has them. What matters is who takes action and gets paid for them.” “Simple scales. Fancy fails. The more complex you make it, the worse your product probably is.” “If you can't sell it more than once, it's not a business. It's just a hustle.” Links Budgetdog https://budgetdog.com Asana https://asana.com/ Quickbooks https://quickbooks.intuit.com/

With special guest: Jeff Apter… in conversation with Bill Kable George Young made his name internationally by writing with his best mate Harry Vanda a song we can all sing along to more than 50 years after its release. So it was a natural choice as the title of Jeff Apter’s book Friday on My Mind: the life of George Young. George managed to get a ticket to The Beatles Sydney performance in 1964. He decided right then that he was going to be in music as a career but it was not going to be a straightforward ride as we learn in Jeff’s book. We hear from our special guest today about the toughness of all the large Young clan. Eight of them arrived in Australia as Ten Pound Poms. They needed that toughness firstly as they grew up in a dreary part of Scotland. Then when they abandoned their life in Scotland they needed to be tough once again when they arrived in the Villawood Migrant Hostel in Sydney. Villawood was not the land of milk and honey they had seen on the posters. It was after a fight in the hostel that George met Harry strumming a guitar and the nucleus of The Easybeats formed. We've covered stories before. With Liz Salmi, Anne Kelly, and Preeti Malani we talked about stories written up in the academic literature, such as the JAMA Piece of My Mind series. We talked with Thor Ringler, who helped found the My Life My Story Project at the VA and beyond, and Heather Coats about the evidence base for capturing patient stories. Today's podcast is both similar and different. Similar in that the underlying theme of the power of stories. Different in that these storytelling initiatives, the Nocturnists and the Palliative Story Exchange, are focused on clinicians sharing stories with each other in small groups to heal. There's something magical that happens in small group storytelling. It's that mixture of intimacy and vulnerability, of shared clinical experiences, that fosters a sense of belonging. We model that small group storytelling experience today. We discuss: The “origin stories” of the Nocturnists Live Show and Podcast and the Palliative Story Exchange The process for story creation and development, written in advance or not, feedback or not after the story, and the aims and goals of each initiative And we each tell a short story, modeling the process for The Nocturnists and the Palliative Story Exchange for our listeners These initiatives arose organically from clinicians as part of a journey away from burnout, moral distress, shame, and loneliness toward healing, wholeness, gratitude, and belonging. A journey taken one story at a time. One final note on the song request: About 20 years ago I took an epidemiology course as part of a Masters program. The instructor, Fran Cook, gave all the students a survey without explanation. We answered the survey and handed it in. One of the questions was, “Can you name a song by the Tragically Hip?” It later turned out the survey was a prognostic index designed to determine if the respondent was Canadian. -@AlexSmithMD Here's a link to an article about the Palliative Story Exchange.

Sarah had the pleasure of interviewing Amber Sealey, director of the newly released Disney+ film OUT OF MY MIND alongside the star of the movie, Phoebe-Rae Taylor. Out of My Mind is based on the best-selling novel of the same name and tells the story of Melody Brooks, a sixth grader with cerebral palsy, who has a quick wit and a sharp mind, but because she is non-verbal and uses a wheelchair, she is not given the same opportunities as her classmates. When a young educator notices her student's untapped potential and Melody starts to participate in mainstream education, Melody shows that what she has to say is more important than how she says it. This film is a compelling story about acceptance, love, friendship, and joy and it doesn't shy away from the challenges that come when people judge you by your disability. It's a great testament to the importance of inclusivity and giving everyone a chance to be heard. In this episode of Talking with Tech, Chris, Melissa, and Maggie Bugaj reflect on the Disney+ movie Out of My Mind! This film centers around a young AAC user with cerebral palsy, and has sparked a lot of conversations about AAC online. The Bugaj family talks about how we can take the popularity of this movie to continue and share the message of inclusive education and support for AAC! 1. Presuming Potential and Inclusive Education: The episode emphasizes the importance of assuming all students, including those with disabilities, have potential. Teachers, families, and educators are encouraged to provide opportunities for students with disabilities to thrive in general education settings, advocating for systemic change rather than blaming individual limitations. 2. The Role of Relationships and Communication Tools: Highlighting the significance of AAC, the Bugaj family discusses how multiple forms of AAC can enable effective communication. The relationships built between students, teachers, and parents are crucial for understanding individual needs and fostering inclusive environments. 3. Shifting Attitudes in Education: The movie serves as a call to action for educators to reflect on their practices and biases. It challenges educators to embrace training and resources to support inclusive education, an important concept as general education increasingly incorporates special education responsibilities. The movie illustrates that change begins with educators understanding and altering the environment, rather than trying to change the individual. Stevie Wonder may very well be our modern-day Mozart. A child prodigy, he joined Motown as a preadolescent, marketed as “Little Stevie Wonder.” He amazed audiences with his virtuosic command of the piano, harmonica, drums, and, of course, his vocals. At just 13, he achieved his first number one hit with “Fingertips Part II,” an unusual chart-topper that featured a live recording of mostly improvised music, with Wonder switching between instruments as the audience cheered him on. However, his talent far surpassed this early novelty. In the 1970s, Wonder broke free from the constraints of his initial recording contract, gaining both artistic and financial independence. Between 1971 and 1976, during what is now known as his "classic period," he released five of the most iconic albums in popular music, beginning with Music of My Mind and culminating in Songs in the Key of Life. These albums showcased his musical genius and included timeless songs that have become part of the modern pop canon, touching on themes of love, heartbreak, justice, and spirituality. Few child prodigies fulfill their potential as profoundly as Stevie Wonder. In this episode of Switched on Pop, with the help of Wesley Morris, NYT critic and host of the audio series The Wonder of Stevie, the show reflects on some of Wonder's most powerful compositions, exploring what makes him our contemporary musical maestro.
