In this episode of Echoes Through Eternity, Dr. Jeffrey D. Skinner explores a troubling but often overlooked trend: while Gen Z men are returning to church, young women are quietly leaving. This is not loud rebellion. It is not rejection of Jesus. It is a slow erosion of belonging.Joined by Rev. Dr. Kim McLean, mentored by Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and others—pastor, songwriter, church planter, and longtime mentor of others—this conversation examines how shame-based formation, unequal leadership structures, purity culture, and unresolved trauma have shaped women's experiences in the church.Drawing on Barna research, lived pastoral stories, and a Wesleyan understanding of holiness as love perfected, this episode asks a deeper question: What happens when formation fails to produce freedom?Key themes include:• The growing gender gap in church attendance• Why women leave without abandoning faith• The impact of shame-based discipleship• Women in ministry and invisible ceilings• Purity culture and spiritual trauma• Why silence feels safer than staying• What faithful formation looks like nowThis episode is not an indictment. It is an invitation—to listen, to repent where needed, and to build churches where women are not merely welcomed, but needed.REFERENCED RESEARCH & THINKERSBarna Group• Gen Z attendance trends and gender gap research• Studies on church disengagement and trust in leadershipSurvey Center on American Life• Faith deconstruction and institutional trust• Gendered religious disengagementBeth Moore• Public departure from the Southern Baptist Convention• Reflections on women, authority, and ScriptureMildred Bangs Wynkoop• A Theology of Love• Holiness as relational restoration, not behavioral perfectionScriptural anchors used or referenced:• Galatians 3:28• John 4 (Woman at the Well)• Resurrection witness of Mary Magdalene• Ephesians 5 (mutual submission, not hierarchy)Takeaways:Gen Z women are experiencing a quiet exodus from church, indicating a deeper relational breakdown. This exodus is characterized by a lack of belonging rather than outright rejection of faith. The data reveals a significant gap in church attendance between young men and women.Church leadership must address the relational safety and equal treatment of women in ministry. Many young women feel unseen and confined to narrow roles within church communities. The shift observed among young women invites churches to reflect on their practices and priorities. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacyOP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy
So excited to celebrate our 300th episode of Mormonish Podcast! Thank you everyone for your amazing support through all the episodes! In a previous Mormonish episode with Ganesh, he mentioned that there are compelling reasons to believe that Joseph and Emma conceived their first child that night at the Hill Cumorah when Joseph was retrieving the golden plates. We didn't explore this topic fully on that episode, but wanted to revisit it to give Ganesh a chance to share more information about this provocative idea. This episode delves into the profound journey of personal reinvention, exemplified by Emmanuel Laroche's transformative experiences in Madagascar. What began as a professional endeavor in the realm of food ingredients and marketing evolved into a deeper exploration of identity, creativity, and purpose, culminating in his new book, "A Taste of Madagascar." Through his travels, Emmanuel discovered the rich tapestry of human connection, tradition, and craftsmanship that inform culinary practices—elements often overshadowed by marketing metrics. He shares insights into the lives of farmers and artisans, revealing the intricate processes behind the ingredients that grace our kitchens. This discussion highlights the duality of professional life and creative expression, underscoring the importance of curiosity and engagement in understanding our world and the stories that shape us.Takeaways:Life transitions can emerge not solely from crises but also through unexpected experiences, such as discovering new flavors that challenge our perspectives.Traveling for professional purposes can transform into profound personal journeys that redefine our understanding of work and creativity. The journey to Madagascar revealed the intricate relationship between tradition, craftsmanship, and the human connections inherent in food production.Writing a book that intertwines culinary culture, anthropology, and personal stories can illuminate the often-overlooked voices of farmers and artisans in the global food narrative.Engaging with local communities while traveling enriches our understanding of the cultural significance behind the ingredients we often take for granted. It is imperative to remain curious and open-minded, as this curiosity fosters deeper connections with the people and places we encounter on our journeys.Find us on Apple, Spotify or your favorite listening platform; visit us on our YouTube channel Find everything "One More Thing" here: https://taplink.cc/beforeyougopodcastWant to be a guest on One More Thing Before You Go? Are lines between church and state blurring even further in today's social, cultural, and political climate? Mormonish Podcast is joined by Dan Hardy, Co President of the Freedom From Religion Foundation and Douglas Hendricks, President of the SLC Chapter of the FFRF, to discuss the topic of church v. state and all the nuance in between. According to the Freedom From Religion Foundation, the history of Western civilization shows us that most social and moral progress has been brought about by persons free from religion. In modern times the first to speak out for prison reform, for humane treatment of the mentally ill, for abolition of capital punishment, for women's right to vote, for death with dignity for the terminally ill, and for the right to choose contraception, sterilization and abortion have been freethinkers, just as they were the first to call for an end to slavery. The Foundation works as an umbrella for those who are free from religion and are committed to the cherished principle of separation of state and church. Isaac Hale, Emma Smith's father, was one of the very first people to observe Joseph Smith during the early Book of Mormon translation period. While Joseph and Emma lived in Hale's home in Harmony, Pennsylvania, Hale saw Joseph working long before any official witnesses were called. This gave him a rare inside view of the process while it was still private and unconfirmed. Hale later said Joseph was not reading from plates in a normal way but dictating with a stone placed in a hat, often without the plates present. To Hale, this looked suspicious, and he concluded Joseph was using folk-magic practices rather than translating ancient records. Because Hale saw this before the Three and Eight Witnesses gave their formal testimonies, he believed he had already seen the truth of what Joseph was doing. His account has remained important because it comes from someone who was there at the very beginning, watching the story unfold before it became public. So why doesn't it get more attention? Ganesh Cherian joins Mormonish to dive into the important and controversial witness account of Isaac Hale. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacy

In this episode, I address one of the most common and frustrating messages women hear when trying to conceive: that you must lose weight in order to get pregnant. Shame has a way of whispering lies that make us believe we're failing our children. As single moms, we carry burdens that feel too heavy. We wonder if we're enough, if our kids deserve better, or if other families are silently judging our choices. While working on the audiobook version of my Courage to Believe Christian Devotional, Day 7 struck me in a profound way. It addresses that crushing weight of shame we often bear as solo parents, and I knew I had to share this powerful message with you. When Shame Keeps Us IsolatedIn this episode, I share Eva's story. A mom who found herself avoiding other parents just to escape the feeling of being judged. Her experience reveals how shame thrives in isolation, convincing us that we're alone in our struggles. Whether it's the sting of a failed marriage, the pressure of not measuring up at work, or that quiet voice telling us we're not enough, shame tries to define our worth.Eva's story resonates with so many of us because it captures those painful moments when we can't afford the perfect birthday gift, when we see complete families at school events, when we convince ourselves our children deserve a life we can't provide. The Unexpected Surprise God OffersBut here's what I want you to understand: God doesn't see the labels the world tries to put on us, and He doesn't agree with them. The core message of day seven reveals how God offers an unexpected surprise by wiping our slate clean. This episode gives you a sneak peek into the audiobook experience, specifically focusing on how we can address the root cause of shame instead of letting it continue to burden us.What You'll Gain From This Episode:1. Recognition of how shame operates in isolation and affects our daily interactions2. Understanding that your struggles as a single mom are not unique. You're not alone3. Insight into God's perspective on your worth beyond worldly labels4. Hope for breaking free from the cycle of shame and self-doubt5. A glimpse into the transformative message of the full 21-day devotionalIf Eva's story resonates with you, this episode offers the first step in reclaiming your light so your children can see it shine. This week, we feature Coddy.tech, a goal-based coding platform where students can choose a language (Python, JavaScript, HTML, and more) and a skill level, then follow a step-by-step learning path with built-in feedback and challenges. We also talk about projects.raspberrypi.org, a free project hub from the Raspberry Pi Foundation that offers Scratch, Python, AI, web dev, and more, all organized by student interests like nature, space, art, music, and science. As we move closer to the holidays—a season of reflection, journeys, and connection—I'm bringing back a conversation that perfectly embodies the new direction of One More Thing Before You Go.In this replay, we ask: What is it about travel that transforms us? Is it escape, or is it enlightenment? Douglas Brouwer, seasoned traveler and author of The Traveler's Path: Finding Spiritual Growth and Inspiration Through Travel, joins me to explore how journeys can shape wisdom, compassion, and legacy. From childhood road trips to living abroad, pilgrimages to mission work, Douglas has experienced travel in all its forms. His insights remind us that travel isn't about where we go—it's about how we go, and how those journeys change us. Together, we discuss the myths of bucket lists, the spiritual restlessness that drives us to explore, and the ways intentional travel can deepen our understanding of humanity. This episode is more than a conversation about travel—it's a cinematic arc of origin, practice, transformation, and legacy. It's exactly the kind of story we're embracing in this new chapter of the podcast, and it's the perfect replay as we enter a season where journeys—both physical and spiritual—take center stage.Takeaways:Travel can be a catalyst for transformation, fostering wisdom and compassion.Meaningful journeys forge deeper connections with diverse cultures.Escape alone may lack impact, but intentional travel enriches perspective.Experiencing history firsthand offers profound insights into our shared human story.Compassion and empathy developed through travel enhance global connection.
Have you ever wondered how someone can rise from repeated abandonment, three failed marriages, and the brink of homelessness to create a life of purpose and hope? Sometimes our greatest struggles become the foundation for our most meaningful work.In this deeply personal recording, I share the raw truth behind my transformation from a woman questioning her worth to someone dedicated to supporting solo mothers through their darkest moments. This isn't just another success story. It's a testament to what becomes possible when we stop running from our pain and start learning from it.After my third divorce, I faced a choice that would change everything. Instead of falling into bitterness or blame, I chose to look inward. What I discovered through a simple but powerful exercise changed not only how I saw myself, but how I approached every relationship moving forward. The process revealed baggage I didn't even know I was carrying and patterns I had been unconsciously repeating for years. From Rock Bottom to Radical FaithThe real test came when I found myself alone with two young sons, facing potential homelessness in Atlanta. What happened next required a leap of faith that still amazes me. A series of events so perfectly timed that they could only be described as miraculous. From an unexpected phone call to free plane tickets, from a stranger's generosity to a 900-mile move with everything we owned packed into a Toyota Camry. But this story isn't just about divine intervention. But it's also about the courage to act even when fear threatens to paralyze you. It's about recognizing that our children are more aware of our struggles than we think, and how they can become our greatest source of strength. What You'll DiscoverThrough this vulnerable sharing, you'll gain insights into:The power of taking responsibility for your part in failed relationships without falling into self-blameA practical exercise that can reveal unconscious patterns in your relationship choicesHow to recognize when fear is masquerading as wisdom and holding you backThe difference between being desperate and being ready to receive helpWhy your faith story matters and how it connects to something much bigger than your circumstancesThis experience became the catalyst for my devotional "Courage to Believe: 21 Day Devotional for Single Moms". This is a resource born from the realization that grace meets us exactly where we are, even in our messiest moments.A Message of HopeWhether you're freshly divorced, widowed, or simply raising children while feeling utterly alone, this story serves as a reminder that you're not walking this path by yourself. Your current chapter doesn't define your entire story.Sometimes the very experiences that break us open are the ones that prepare us to pour hope into others. If you've ever felt like you're barely keeping your head above water, or if you're ready to stop repeating old patterns and start writing a new story, this episode offers both practical wisdom and spiritual encouragement for the road ahead.Preorder Courage to Believe: 21 Day Devotional For Single Moms: https://tr.ee/C9KoEbJoin our Facebook group for support and faith connection: https://tr.ee/6IKiM6https://solomomstalk.mysites.io/podcast-2-copy/from-three-divorces-to-divine-purpose-how-god-rebuilt-my-broken-foundation This podcast is hosted by Captivate, try it yourself for free. Are you carrying more weight than you need to? As single mothers, we often pride ourselves on our ability to handle everything alone, but what if that very strength is also our greatest burden? In this powerful audio exploration, I share something extraordinary that happened when I used Google's NotebookLM to analyze a single page from my devotional "Courage to Believe: 21 Day Devotional For Single Moms." The AI created an insightful breakdown of my message to single moms about finding sustainable strength while learning to release unnecessary burdens. This isn't just another "you've got this" pep talk. We're examining the profound tension between the determination that defines us and the overwhelming responsibility that threatens to crush us. The analysis reveals how our quiet strength - that consistent ability to show up day after day - can be both our superpower and our prison. The Weight We CarryThrough the lens of AI interpretation, we explore why the advice "don't give up" resonates so deeply with single mothers, yet why willpower alone eventually leads to burnout. The discussion reveals how our burdens extend far beyond immediate problems to include our wants, dreams, and aspirations - creating an exhausting mental load that cuts into our peace like grocery bag handles digging into our hands.A Different Kind of StrengthWhat emerges is a revolutionary approach to resilience: the courage to maintain our determination while actively choosing to release what we cannot control. This dual strategy combines scriptural wisdom with practical psychology, offering a roadmap for those who refuse to give up but desperately need relief. The grocery bag analogy presented here will change how you think about burden-bearing forever. Sometimes the strongest thing we can do is let someone else carry the load. What You'll DiscoverHere are 5 key insights you can expect from this episode:Why "quiet strength" is more sustainable than aggressive resilienceThe difference between carrying burdens and managing outcomes How to identify which "wants" are weighing you down unnecessarilyThe active choice required to maintain relief once you find itA practical framework for persistent surrender instead of persistent struggleThis AI-generated analysis of Courage To Believe: 21 Day Devotional For Single Moms, offers a fascinating mirror into the heart of single motherhood - revealing truths about our strength that we might not even recognize ourselves.
