Madeline Griswold and Sarah Hall are the student founders of Zaar, an online exchange platform for the Brown and RISD student community. The Zaar site aims to provide students with a safe, reliable, and efficient way to buy and sell items from one another rather than throwing them away.
Maggie Bachenberg and Trisha Ballakur are the student founders of Pointz, a safety-focused, community-driven GPS application for micromobilility vehicles. The Pointz platform employs a mapping algorithm fueled by crowdsourced data to provide navigation assistance throughout city streets -- making sustainable transportation safer and more enjoyable for everyday riders.
Our first Dive In Episode of 2021 showcases Project Matriarchs, a social venture co-founded by Pilar McDonald ‘24. Project Matriarchs is an organization working to provide meaningful virtual childcare support to working mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The mission behind the organization stemmed from the reality that women are taking on a disproportionate amount of childcare and homeschooling responsibilities as a result of the pandemic, undermining their ability to maintain the same hours or even to work at all. Project Matriarchs is a growing community of college students committed to supporting working caregivers, particularly mothers, during the pandemic. Jack Dermer is the student founder of Camp Connect, an online summer learning platform that employed a project based approach to introduce middle-schoolers to subjects ranging from coding, to medical science, to acting and fashion design. In 2014 Austin Martin founded and created Rhymes with Reason: an interactive online educational platform that teaches academic vocabulary using popular hip-hop music. Martin started Rhymes with Reason after learning that 67 of the top 100 SAT words can be found in recognizable hip-hop songs. RwR leverages the genre's lyrics, which Martin refers to as “the world's most popular and equitable word bank” to teach literacy and vocabulary in 100-plus education programs. Among Martin's collaborators is musical artist Chance the Rapper's SocialWorks, which teamed up with RwR to make the Chicago Learning Playlist for 1,000 Windy City students.
Geralyn Dreyfous has a wide, distinguished background in the arts, philanthropic consulting sector, and participates on numerous boards and initiatives. Geralyn Dreyfous is the co-founder of impact partners, a production company with the goal of bringing financiers and filmmakers together to create films for social impact. Additionally, Dreyfous co-founded Gamechanger films in 2013, the first for-profit fund dedicated exclusively to financing narrative features directed by women.
Sarah Leary is the co-founder and current board observer of Nextdoor, a neighborhood social networking platform for trusted connections and the exchange of helpful information, goods, and services. Leary took on her current role at Nextdoor after founding, growing, and scaling the company.
Howard Anderson founded The Yankee Group which analyzed the high tech industry and was on the Inc list of fastest growing companies three years running. He sold the firm to Reuters in 1999. He is the co-founder of Battery Venture Capital which has raised over $4 Billion over several funds and has invested in over 350 high tech companies. Since 2000 he has taught graduate students of business at HBS, MIT, Dartmouth, Duke and now Brown. Additionally he has been the Visiting Professor at the Indian School of Business, Technion University of Israel, and Skolkovo University of Moscow.
