En 1684, sous le règne de Louis XIV, la Machine de Marly devient l'un des projets les plus ambitieux de toute l'Europe.Son objectif paraît presque impossible : faire remonter l'eau de la Seine jusqu'aux immenses jardins de Château de Versailles et du château de Marly, situés bien plus haut que le fleuve.Car le problème de Versailles est simple : il manque d'eau.Or, André Le Nôtre a imaginé des jardins gigantesques remplis de bassins, cascades et fontaines spectaculaires. Certaines fêtes royales nécessitent des milliers de mètres cubes d'eau par jour. Mais les étangs voisins ne suffisent plus.Alors les ingénieurs de Louis XIV imaginent une machine absolument titanesque.Sur les berges de la Seine, près de Marly, on construit un ensemble colossal composé de 14 immenses roues à aubes, chacune mesurant environ 12 mètres de diamètre. Actionnées par le courant du fleuve, elles entraînent plus de 250 pompes reliées à un incroyable réseau de bielles, de chaînes et de tuyaux.Le principe est simple en théorie : pomper l'eau du fleuve, puis la faire grimper progressivement la colline grâce à plusieurs stations intermédiaires, jusqu'aux réservoirs alimentant Versailles.Mais dans la pratique, c'est un cauchemar mécanique.La Machine de Marly est l'une des installations les plus complexes jamais construites au XVIIe siècle. Elle nécessite des centaines d'ouvriers pour fonctionner et entretenir les mécanismes. Le vacarme est assourdissant. Des témoins racontent que l'on entend les grincements de bois et les chocs métalliques à plusieurs kilomètres.Et surtout : la machine tombe constamment en panne.Les pièces s'usent rapidement, les pompes cassent, les conduites fuient. Malgré son gigantisme, la Machine de Marly fournit beaucoup moins d'eau que prévu. À Versailles, les fontaines ne fonctionnent souvent que partiellement. Lors des promenades du roi, des fontainiers doivent même ouvrir et fermer certaines fontaines au fur et à mesure de son passage pour donner l'illusion d'une abondance permanente.Pourtant, malgré ses défauts, la Machine de Marly fascine toute l'Europe. Des voyageurs viennent admirer ce prodige technique considéré comme une merveille d'ingénierie. Pendant plus d'un siècle, elle restera un symbole du génie… mais aussi de la démesure du règne de Louis XIV.Car la Machine de Marly résume parfaitement Versailles : un rêve gigantesque, spectaculaire, coûteux… et presque impossible à faire fonctionner durablement.
