Send us Fan MailWelcome to Stories Come to Life. I am your host, Kathryn Lopez Luker. This is the winter that Cress is thirteen years old. Cress is trying to find out what her “trademark” will be at school. Will she be a serious, sweet, and unknown person, or should she find a way to be known as “that Crazy Cress Delahanty”? Then, later in the season, Cress will be performing in a dance recital. But oh, she is so worried her parents may mispronounce a word or somehow want to participate in the festivities. What would her friend Bernadine (known as Nedra on Fridays) think of her if Mr. and Mrs. Delahanty do something embarrassing? Now, sit back, relax, and listen to this story come to life.Listening to audiobooks really does count as reading, and there's no better way to relax than to hear Stories Come to Life! The True Story of Two WWII Airmen, a Doomed Mission, and the Woman Who Bound Them TogetherAt its core, this true story traces the striking parallels between two friends from the same small Illinois hometown, John B. and Bob, bound by the same woman, Polley—one man's sister, the other's unrequited love. Both join the Army Air Corps, train as B-24 navigators, and rise to lead crews into combat. Months apart, each is shot down over the same target—and both go missing. Guided by luck and fate, only one finds his way home. The larger picture is the U.S. campaign to destroy Hitler's fuel source at Ploesti, Romania. From Benghazi, Libya, the 8th and 9th Air Force launched Operation Tidal Wave, the first-ever zero-altitude raid— of the 1,700 men that took off that morning, 532 failed to return, including John B. Bob set out to learn John B.'s fate. Months later, the 15th AF regrouped and followed with relentless high-level bombing—some 2,300 airmen went missing, captured or killed, including Bob. Back home, Polley could only wait and hope as friendship, loyalty are forever reshaped by war.At its heart, is a deeply human story— told through the voices of John B. and Bob and the eyes of Polley (based on hundreds of letters a POW diary and family verities corroborated by primary sources including the national archives, both US and German), where war unfolds not only in missions and survival but in the fragile bonds forged amid wartime chaos.A USA Today bestseller, THE NAVIGATOR'S LETTER by JAN CRESS DONDI, reveals one of the most audacious and overlooked World War II stories. It chronicles a dangerous U.S. Army Air Force campaign through the voices of two airmen bound by duty—and one woman, forming a deeply human narrative. A gripping blend of military history and war biography, it captures brotherhood, love, and sacrifice.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

The C.O.W.S. host Gus T. Renegade delivers an explosive update on his ongoing audit of the federal surveillance apparatus targeted at the late Dr. Frances Cress Welsing. Earlier this year, Gus filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to uncover the hidden state files on the renowned third-generation physician. The staggering truth is now coming to light: - The April File Drop: The initial 20-page release proved active FBI surveillance starting in 1973—two full years before Howard University terminated her contract. It confirmed the Bureau deployed informants to monitor her public lectures decades before *The Isis Papers* was published. - The Multi-Agency Net: The FBI admitted more files existed. Weeks later, Gus secured dozens of additional pages revealing a massive, coordinated spying web weaponized against the entire Cress family lineage. The 1956 Campus Surveillance: This new file exposes documents stamped "SUBV CONTROL" (Subversive Control) under Classification Code 100 (Domestic Security). It includes a crystal-clear surveillance photograph of a young Dr. Welsing before 1960 that was sent straight to the desk of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. - The paperwork proves the Bureau weaponized university registrars and local informants to spy on a teenage Dr. Welsing's reading habits, political activities, and academic milestones. Join Gus T. for a comprehensive, counter-racist analysis of how the system tracks spectators and targets Black intellectuals from youth. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS17Years INVEST in The COWS – [http://paypal.me/TheCOWS](http://paypal.me/TheCOWS) Cash App: [https://cash.app/$TheCOWS](https://cash.app/$TheCOWS) CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

Send us Fan MailWelcome to Stories Come to Life. I am your host, Kathryn Lopez Luker. This is the first episode of Cress Delahanty, a book I loved when I read it first years and years ago. The author, Jessamyn West, was born in 1902. She moved to Orange County, California in 1908 when there were citrus groves and rural areas filled with birdsong and open spaces. This is the setting of the story we will be listening to for the next while. It begins when Cress, whose full name is Crescent, is twelve years old. She is a thoughtful, dreamy girl who has a rich inner life. Maybe you will see yourself in Cress as she grows from a child to a young woman. Or perhaps, as you watch Cress grow up, you will understand the lives of the people around you a little bit better. I hope you will learn to love this story as much as I do! The Context of White Supremacy welcomes the return of Dr. Kenneth O'Reilly for his fourth appearance on the program. As the author of the essential texts Racial Matters: The FBI's Secret File on Black America, 1960-1972 and Nixon's Piano, Dr. O'Reilly's work is so foundational that Dr. Frances Cress Welsing stipulated in The Isis Papers that no White or non-white person is authorized to discuss the System of White Supremacy without having read Racial Matters. While originally scheduled to debunk the "anti-racist" mythology surrounding President John 'Fox' Kennedy, this session pivots to a stunning new discovery: The FBI's secret files on Dr. Frances Cress Welsing herself. Gus T. Renegade & Dr. O'Reilly analyze incomplete original reports showing the FBI began surveilling Dr. Welsing as early as 1954—when she was a 19-year-old black teen in Chicago. We examine why government Race Soldiers deemed her a person of interest 15 years before the Cress Theory of Color Confrontation was even penned, and discuss how Black informants like William O'Neal and Ernest C. Withers were coerced and manipulated to support the FBI's broader war on Black thought. #KeysToTheColors #TheCOWS17Years INVEST in The COWS – [http://paypal.me/TheCOWS](http://paypal.me/TheCOWS) Cash App: [https://cash.app/$TheCOWS](https://cash.app/$TheCOWS) CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#
History is often told through battles, dates, and strategy — but sometimes, the most powerful stories are found in something far more personal… letters. In this episode, I'm joined by author Jan Cress Dondi to discuss her deeply moving book, The Navigator's Letter: The True Story of Two WWII Airmen, a Doomed Mission, and the Woman Who Bound Them Together. Set against the backdrop of World War II, the book tells the intertwined stories of two airmen, John B. White, and, Bob Cress — whose lives, hopes, and wartime experiences were connected through letters written to the same woman, Polley. This is a story about love, loss, sacrifice, and the fragile threads that connect people across time and war.
One of the riskiest air raids of World War II occurred on August 1, 1943, over the oil fields at Ploesti, Romania--Nazi Germany's primary fuel source. The Allies believed that the destruction of Hitler's oil refineries would shorten the war. Using an untested strategy, it was worth the gamble, but the mission did not go according to plan--with 53 aircraft and 532 crewmen lost, it was the costliest US air raid of the war. A true story, The Navigator's Letter is a tale of uncanny coincidences: two friends from the same small Illinois town; both joined the Air Corps; both became navigators; both were assigned to B-24 Liberators; both flew missions over Europe; both of their planes were forced down over Ploesti; and both went missing-in-action. Intertwined with events of WWII, the story follows the two B-24 navigators coursing through wartime, both with ties to the same woman. Their lives unfurl with the Air Force's darkest day, Operation Tidal Wave. It was the first-ever zero-altitude air raid followed by multiple high-altitude raids culminating in Operation Reunion, the largest evacuation by air in history with the Tuskegee Airmen of the 332nd Fighter Group flying escort repatriating 1,162 POWs from Romania back to American air bases in Italy. The C.O.W.S. host Gus T. Renegade provides an in depth counter-racist analysis of the FBI files on 3rd generation physician and author of the The Isis Papers Dr. Frances Cress Welsing. The Counter Intelligence Program of the FBI was specifically dedicated to neutralizing any attempted counter-racist effort and to prevent the ascension of a "black messiah" who could constructively organize a sizable number of Victims of White Supremacy to Produce Justice. It seems some of the most powerful enforcement officials in the world thought Dr. Frances Cress Welsing was an "extreme threat" who could possibly be that "messiah." We'll examine when the FBI began monitoring Dr. Welsing - which was years before her 1975 termination from Howard University, how they observed her activity, and who in the FBI was interested in the works of a little known 3rd generation black psychiatrist in her 30s. Gus T. obtained these records via a Freedom of Information Request. The bureau agreed that based on his 31 interviews with Dr. Welsing and repeat discussions with Dr. Kenneth O'Reilly, who authored Racial Matters: The FBI's Secret Files on Black America from 1960-1972, Gus is a Subject Matter Expert, uniquely qualified to analyze these documents. #Facts Importantly, the FBI's surveillance of Dr. Welsing extends well beyond 1972. FBI documents indicate that there were "informants" present to spy on a 1973 talk given by Dr. Welsing with merely 13 people present - that's including the fink. #KeysToTheColors #TheCOWS17Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

The True Story of Two WWII Airmen, a Doomed Mission, and the Woman Who Bound Them TogetherInterviews Available February 2-7, and Upon Requesthttps://jancressdondi.com/ Beginning early on August 1, 1943, Operation Tidal Wave was a risky mission aimed at destroying high-octane fuel production vital to Nazi Germany. It involved the first-ever zero-altitude air raid just 150 feet above the ground – but chances of success were ranged between 50% and suicide. In missions to destroy fuel-rich Ploesti, Romania, 2,432 US bomber crewmen went missing, became POW's or were killed in action. Jan Cress Dondi shares the inside story surrounding this historic mission in the new book, THE NAVIGATOR'S LETTER: The True Story of Two WWII Airmen, a Doomed Mission, and the Woman Who Bound Them Together (Union Square & Co., February 10, 2026). The connected war stories of her uncle, John B. White, and her father, Bob Cress, are captured in the letters they both wrote to the same woman, Polley, who became Jan's mother. Virtual care is no longer just about access. It is now becoming the infrastructure layer that helps health systems reduce fragmentation, strengthen workplace safety, and scale digital care more intelligently. Tune in and learn how health systems can rethink virtual care and AI adoption in ways that are more proactive, sustainable, and grounded in what truly matters. About Tammy Cress: Tammy Cress, RN, MSN, is Senior Vice President of Clinical Solutions and Innovation at Teladoc Health, where she leads the development of healthcare solutions designed to meet real market needs and support growth across complex care environments. A nurse by training and a military veteran, Tammy brings deep experience in telehealth strategy, operations, and innovation. Before her current role, she held multiple leadership positions at Teladoc, Providence Health & Services, and Swedish, where she helped design, scale, and operationalize telehealth programs across multi-state health systems. Her background spans clinical operations, business operations, governance, product strategy, and service delivery, with a consistent focus on aligning technology investments to patient needs, frontline realities, and long-term organizational success. Things You'll Learn: Fragmented telehealth investments can create unnecessary strain for care teams, even when individual tools appear to deliver good results. Responsible AI can help reduce bedside cognitive burden by sensing what is happening in care environments and sending the right alerts to the right people. Workplace safety is a major healthcare challenge, and smarter room-based technology can help organizations become more proactive instead of reactive. AI and virtual care programs are more likely to scale when leadership aligns governance structures instead of treating digital tools as separate initiatives. Health systems need a clear strategy, stronger alignment, and a fresh look at prior investments if they want to move from pilots to sustainable transformation. We speak with Jan Cress Bondi, author of "The Navigator's Letter: The True Story of Two World War 2 Airmen, a Doomed Mission, and the Woman who Bound Them Together." The story concerns the author's mother Polley, and two men who served our country as airmen: Polley's brother John B. White and Polley's friend and future husband Bob Cress. The two men participated in what turned out to be an ill-conceived air raid on oil fields in Romania - an attack that ended up being the costliest air raid of the war. Bondi was inspired to write the book after looking through hundreds and hundreds of her mother's letters. [Bondi is signing books at Boswell Books, 2559 Downer Avenue in Milwaukee, WI on Thursday, February 12th at 6:30 pm.]

The last time the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks faced off in the Super Bowl, Dr. Frances Cress Welsing was making her 26th of 31 visits to The C.O.W.S. We'll revisit a bit of this important discussion - which include a litany of remarks that remain painfully relevant 11 years later. Our scheduled White guest confirmed with Gus on Friday afternoon, yet waited until just after 3:30 AM PST to renege without explanation. As Fuller say, it does not get better than Tacky.
