For this year's Christmas episode of the Random Wrestling Review the team are going back to the turn of the Millennium, and the first WWE pay-per-view of the 21st century, as they presented the Royal Rumble. It was a night that featured the debut of Tazz in WWE, The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boyz squaring off in a celebrated tag team tables match, the ultra-violent WWE Title match street fight between Triple H and Cactus Jack, as well as the Rumble itself of course, but even then may still be best remembered by some, for the controversial Miss Rumble Swimsuit contest. It's time for us to give it the RWR treatment... The Random Wrestling Review is brought to you this week by Sam, Alex and Tinky.

Katherine Legge was announced yesterday (April 9th) as a driver in the 2024 Indianapolis 500 for Dale Coyne Racing with RWR. On the same day she was at the press day for this year's Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach where we got to sit down with her and chat about her new opportunity. She was also very candid in discussing the incident with Stefan Wilson last year along with how and why it happened. Legge is super talented and was the first female to win a professional open wheel race when she made her debut at Long Beach in the Formula Atlantic series in 2005. Our interview was kept a bit short as she had to get to the airport and catch a flight back to Indy to be able to get on track at the Speedway today for the open test today and tomorrow. Enjoy! Note: In the Rookie Orientation Practice (ROP) and veteran refresher session at the Brickyard this morning, Legge was second quickest behind former “500” pole sitter Marco Andretti. Next week on April 18, 2024, Legge will be inducted into the Long Beach Motorsports Walk of Fame. She'll be the first female inductee there ever.

“Do I really replace lenses or just buy more of them? That's the major question,” says Kevin Rickert, B&H Photo's Senior Sales Trainer for cameras and lighting, in the heat of discussion for our Notable Lens Releases of 2022 and 2023 episode. Listen in as we assess the latest crop of optics from Canon, FUJIFILM, Hasselblad, Nikon, OM SYSTEM, Sigma, Sony, and Tamron. The full list makes for a lot of glass, so we've narrowed things down to a focused selection of primes and zooms spanning medium format, full frame, cropped sensor, and Micro Four Thirds formats. As in our annual Cameras of the Year show from December, we mix up the tech talk with practical anecdotes to help match lenses and customers based on user experience. Among the many threads of our chat, we commend the release of some new and different focal lengths—from Nikon's 26mm pancake to Sony's 20-70mm f/4 G-series zoom to Tamron's 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 telephoto. “Maybe the 26mm will be the new 28, which is great,” says Rickert. “We like choices, and a lot of brands are going this route with their lens offerings.” Guest: Kevin Rickert Episode Timeline 1:45: Canon RF 135mm f/1.8L IS USM lens and its unique cat-eye bokeh. 6:32: Four new Canon RF-S lenses for APS-C cameras, plus RF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM and RF 1200mm f/8L IS USM super-telephotos for wildlife and sports. 9:20: FUJIFILM XF 56mm f/1.2 R WR for portraits, XF 150-600mm f/5.6-8 R LM OIS WR for wildlife and sports, XF 18-120mm f/4 LM PZ WR for everyday use, XF 30mm f/2.8 R LM WR, and FUJIFILM GF 20-35mm f/4 R WR lens for medium format. 12:42: Hasselblad XCD 38mm f/2.5 V, XCD 55mm f/2.5 V, and XCD 90mm f/2.5 V lenses. 18:49: Nikon Z 26mm f/2.8 pancake lens, Z 85mm f/1.2 S for portraits, 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S, and Z 600mm f/4 TC VR SZ super telephotos for wildlife and sports. 25:06: Episode break 25:58: OM SYSTEM 90mm f/3.5 Macro IS Pro lens, and the benefit of IP53 weather sealing. 31:43: Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art for L-mount and E-mount systems, plus rerelease of lenses for X-mount and Z-mount systems. 36:06: Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM, FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G, FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II, FE 20-70mm f/4 G lenses. 43:58: Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD, 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD lenses. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Pretraining Language Models with Human Preferences, published by Tomek Korbak on February 21, 2023 on LessWrong. This post summarizes the main results from our recently released paper Pretraining Language Models with Human Preferences, and puts them in the broader context of AI safety. For a quick summary of the paper, take a look at our Twitter thread. TL;DR: In the paper, we show how to train LMs with human preferences (as in RLHF), but during LM pretraining. We find that pretraining works much better than the standard practice of only finetuning with human preferences after pretraining; our resulting LMs generate text that is more often in line with human preferences and are more robust to red teaming attacks. Our best method is conditional training, where we learn a predictive model of internet texts conditional on their human preference scores, e.g., evaluated by a predictive model of human preferences. This approach retains the advantages of learning from human preferences, while potentially mitigating risks from training agents with RL by learning a predictive model or simulator. Summary of the paper Motivation. LMs are pretrained to maximize the likelihood of their training data. Since the training data contain undesirable content (e.g. falsehoods, offensive language, private information, buggy code), the LM pretraining objective is clearly (outer) misaligned with human preferences about LMs' downstream applications as helpful, harmless, and honest assistants or reliable tools. These days, the standard recipe for alining LMs with human preferences is to follow pretraining with a second phase of finetuning: either supervised finetuning on curated data (e.g. instruction finetuning, PALMS) or RL finetuning with a learned reward model (RLHF). But it seems natural to ask: Could we have a pretraining objective that is itself outer-aligned with human preferences? Methods. We explore objectives for aligning LMs with human preferences during pretraining. Pretraining with human feedback (PHF) involves scoring training data using a reward function (e.g. a toxic text classifier) that allows the LM to learn from undesirable content while guiding the LM to not imitate that content at inference time. We experimented with the following objectives: MLE (the standard pretraining objective) on filtered data; Conditional training: a simple algorithm learning a distribution over tokens conditional on their human preference score, reminiscent of decision transformer; Unlikelihood training: maximizing the likelihood of tokens with high human preference score and the unlikelihood of tokens with low human preference scores; Reward-weighted regression (RWR): an offline RL algorithm that boils down to MLE weighted by human preference scores; and Advantage-weighted regression (AWR): an offline RL algorithm extending RWR with a value head, corresponding to MLE weighted by advantage estimates (human preference scores minus value estimates). Setup. We pretrain gpt2-small-sized LMs (124M params) on compute-optimal datasets (according to Chinchilla scaling laws) using MLE and PHF objectives. We consider three tasks: Generating non-toxic text, using scores given by a toxicity classifier. Generating text without personally identifiable information (PII), with a score defined by the number of pieces of PII per character detected by a simple filter. Generating Python code compliant with PEP8, the standard style guide for Python, using as a score the number of violations per character found by an automated style checker. Metrics. We compare different PHF objectives in terms of alignment (how well they satisfy preferences) and capabilities (how well they perform on downstream tasks). We primarily measure alignment in terms of LM samples' misalignment scores, given by the reward functions used at t...

If myself and Ella get into a room after having both read a book that one likes and the other dislikes, what happens? We answer that question in today's episode. The Interestings follows a group of characters who meet at summer camp for the arts and become inseparable. This book looks at them at the height of youth through middle age, as their talents, fortunes, and degrees of satisfaction diverge. Think of it as spying on pretentious, rich a**holes. Our everything expert, Ella Kopeikin, joins me on this argumentative quest to see who is right: Ella or Jenna. In this episode we cover: How the debate of the century led to RWR's first-ever final ratings change. Can someone's entire identity surround their own boobs? Are we interesting? Or are we not interesting? Does that even matter? Open your book and press play on a podcast that will make you choose sides by having you answer the most important question of this discussion: Are The Interestings actually interesting? Mentioned in the Pairings section of the podcast: Succession (TV Show) Normal People (Book) Dead Poets Society (Movie) Conversations with Friends (Book) Igby Goes Down (Movie) The Secret History (Book) Wine Pairings: Rich Bordeaux or Champagne

I typically prefer backpacks for camera gear. But, when I knew I would be shooting a 10-hour wedding while seven months pregnant, I invested in a waist belt with lens pouches. I parked the heavy backpack, but could quickly access the essentials without adding additional weight to my back. My son is now two-and-a-half, yet I still switch from my backpack to a waist belt for long wedding days. So when Manfrotto announced the new Street Camera Waist Bag — in one of my favorite colors — I was eager to try it out. You can view this article and much more with minimal ads in our brand new app for iOS, iPadOS, and Android. The Manfrotto Street Camera Waist Bag is a compact, 2L bag that can fit a lens or two from compact mirrorless systems, a compact camera, or a smaller drone. Besides being worn around the waist, it doubles as a sling. And despite being quite tiny, it can still house a water bottle or compact tripod using connection straps on the bottom. While another extra pocket would make this bag nearly perfect, the Street Waist is a good option for minimalist photographers. Table of Contents Too Long, Didn't Read Pros and Cons Pros Cons Gear Used Innovations Tech Specs Ergonomics Build Quality Ease of Use Conclusions Likes Dislikes Too Long, Didn't Read The Manfrotto Street Waist is a small, “fanny pack” style bag that also converts to a sling. I loved using it as a lens bag for fast swaps, but it needs a few tweaks to be perfect. Hoever, all of that may be forgivable because of a $40 price tag. Pros and Cons Pros Minimalist design Quick to access lenses Comfortable Can be worn as a waist bag or sling Straps for mini tripod or water bottle Great color Really affordable Cons No SD card pockets Pretty small — only the smallest bodies will fit here, but works great for a lens bag (excluding big telephotos) There's no strap padding when worn as a sling. Zippers are not weather-sealed. Gear Used I used this bag with the Leica M Macro 90mm f4, M Summilux 90mm f2, and the M Telyt 135mm f3.4. I also tested this lens with the Fujifilm 50mm f1 R WR and the Fujifilm 90mm f2 R LM WR. In both cases, I used the Street Waist as a lens bag for holding multiple lenses, rather than holding a body and one lens. And I still was able to barely fit the Fujifilm X-T4 in with the 90mm detached. Innovations While waist bags aren't as plentiful as backpacks and messengers, they're not impossible to find. The Manfrotto Street Slim isn't the only bag that converts from waist to sling or even the only one that allows a tripod attachment. But, it sits at a very competitive $40, is one of the few options that are not black, and has a minimalist design. Tech Specs Manfrotto lists the following specifications for the Street Camera Waist Bag: Minimum Weight: 0.66 lbs Internal Dimensions: 8.66 x 2.76 x 5.51 in Camera Insert Dimensions: 7.48 x 2.76 x 4.72 in External Dimensions: 9.45 x 5.12 x 5.91 in Volume: 2 L Tripod Connection: Yes Compatible Drones Models: DJI Mavic Pro, DJI Mavic Pro Platinum, DJI Mavic Air, DJI Mavic 2 Pro, DJI Mavic 2 Zoom Material: Synthetic Fabric Types Of Gear: Point & shoot, Smartphones, Mini tripod Type Of Bag: Carrying Solution Water Repellent: Yes Ergonomics The Manfrotto Street Waist bag is quite compact. Vertically, it won't fit lenses longer than about 2.75 inches; stashed horizontally, a single lens under about 5.5 inches can ride along. For mirrorless cameras, I find the small size works best as a lens bag rather than one to carry all your gear. I could fit one lens and my X-T4 body, but I had to detach the lens first. As a lens bag, it fit my two Fujifilm lenses nicely, with a narrow spot between them that could stash batteries. With the Leica M system, which has much narrower lenses, I fit all three lenses and still had an extra slot big enough for batteries. As a small bag, photographers should carefully measure their gear to see if the Street Waist is the right fit. The Street Waist is a very minimalist bag. There are just...

The Trailblazer series continues this week with Elda Minger—author of contemporary and historical romances, including Untamed Heart, which is the first contemporary romance to feature condom use on the page. Elda talks about writing for Vivian Stephens, about writing about women's bodies, about reproductive choice and about the way romance made space for women during the 70s and 80s. She shares a collection of gorgeous stories about her life as a reader and writer (and a particularly wonderful detour as a bookseller). About the boom of category and contemporary romance in the 1980s, and about the way writing made her who she is. We are thrilled to have found Elda, and that she took time to speak with us and share her wonderful perspective on the genre with us. We can't think of a better week to share this episode with you.
