A PODCAST ABOUT LADYKILLERS - women who kill, and how we talk about them, by Elena Colman and Jo Hauge
We’re back! This time we’re talking about Lisa Montgomery, who murdered and then performed a c-section on Bobbie Jo Stinnett in order to kidnap her baby. Lisa Montgomery is likely to be executed this month as part of Trump’s rush to execute federal death row prisoners before the end of his term, along with Cory Johnson and Dustin Higgs. Other topics include: aggressive mince meat, dicks coming at you like a train in early cinema, gone off food, pulling the umbilical cord back into your uterus like you’re henry the hoover, and Elena being the walking champion of the world. If you want to learn more about the campaigns to save the federal death row inmates scheduled for execution this month, please check out the links below and the article from democracy now that Elena references. https://deathpenaltyworldwide.org/project/savelisa/ https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/president-trump-please-stop-the-federal-executions/ savedustinjhiggs.com Our theme song is by Killjoys, our DIY band that we do with our pal Ashley! CONTENT NOTES: discussions of child sexual abuse and intimate partner violence, coerced sterilisation, murder and dismemberment of a pregnant person, kidnapping of an infant, the death penalty and death row conditions, racism in the justice system.
This month we're talking about another much maligned early 90s woman: Amy Fisher, referred to as the Long Island Lolita because the press are gross, what else is new. When she was 17, Amy Fisher shot Mary Jo Buttafuco, the wife of her 39 year old boyfriend Joey Buttafuco. We discuss what a scumbag Joey Buttafuco is, the media circus that surrounded her trial, and the sad aftermath of all of this. Other topics include: if pics of the inside of your body are the ultimate nudes, why no one has invented a she–poo, and whether Amy Fisher is the Long Island Jeremy Corbyn. Content notes: discussion of medical issues related to covid, other medical issues including heart issues, gynecology and head injuries, attempted murder by shooting, sexual assault, statutory rape, racist police, underage sex work and trafficking, victim blaming and whorephobia.
This month we talk about Mary Mallon, better known as Typhoid Mary or the OG superspreader, an Irish immigrant who was an asymptomatic carrier of typhoid fever and who was forcibly quarantined by the city of New York in the early 1900s. The story often goes that Mary Mallon infected hundreds of people with Typhoid Fever as an act of deliberate murder, which is (surprise!) not true. We discuss Mary’s experience of being quarantined, why she was portrayed as singularly infectious and evil, other individuals who have been named superspreaders, and the idea of the “patient zero” of the AIDS epidemic. Other topics include: a review the experience of having mild coronavirus (0 stars), pandemic memes, licking toilets and 19th century lesbians nicknamed “Uncle”. Our theme song is performed by Killjoys, our DIY band that we do with our pal Ashley! Our EP is out on bandcamp and spotify, please give it a listen! CONTENT NOTES : If you want non–corona related escapism this is not the episode for that! Includes discussion of having mild coronavirus and about the pandemic more broadly, infectious disease chat (HIV/AIDS, SARS, TB and Syphilis as well as Typhoid Fever), racism and classism in relation to disease, non–graphic mentions of vomiting and emetophobia, bad and gross 19th century medical practices, and medical mistreatment and coercion.
To make up for our long absence, this month we tackle not one but (technically) TWO PARACHUTE MURDERS! Els Van Doren her friend Els ‘Babs’ Clottemans were having an affair with the same man. All three of them were members of the same parachuting club, and in 2006 Clottemans murdered Van Doren by cutting the lines of her parachute before a jump. We discuss this case as well as a UK parachute murder (not by a woman), the Netflix series Don’t Fuck With Cats, and get real meta about true crime as a genre. Other topics include: Jo’s new habit of swinging naked across swimming pools, how buff Elena is becoming, and, as usual, piss. Our theme song is by Killjoys, our DIY band that we do with our pal Ashley! Our EP is coming out THIS SUNDAY, you can listen to it here: https://killjoys.bandcamp.com or on spotify or buy it on cassette if you come to our gig on Sunday the 23rd of feb at DIY Space For London @ 7:30pm. CONTENT NOTES: discussions of gynaecolog, endometriosis, HRT/testosterone, suicide, murder and domestic abuse.
This month we tackle another non–murdering but much maligned woman from the 90s, Lorena Bobbitt, who cut her husband John Wayne Bobbitt’s penis off after he raped her. The case was an absolute media circus, vendors sold hot dogs and pants with pictures of knives on them outside the courthouse and John Wayne Bobbitt went on late night television to guess the punchline of jokes about the incident. We talk about the amazon documentary (stream it illegally!), John Wayne Bobbitt: Uncut, the porno, and men who think their wives are waiting with bated breath for dick–chopping to become legal. We also discuss whether one million dilfs is too many dilfs, adventures in accidental romance novel purchasing, whether human spit melts ice and what constitutes a sexy ghost. Our theme song is by Killjoys, our DIY band that we do with our pal Ashley! Our EP is coming out in the new year! CONTENT NOTES: coercive abortion, domestic violence and abuse, a lot of discussion of sexual assault and rape culture and shitty laws around rape.
Is there a western hemisphere? Is David Byrne nice? Would Betty Broderick have worn a scrunchie? These are some of the important questions we tackle in this episode. Our murderess this month is Betty Broderick, who shot her ex husband Daniel Broderick and his new wife Linda Kolkena after Dan left her for the younger woman. The case became notorious because Betty claimed that being dumped after having spent her life raising their children and putting him through medical and law school drove her to kill them and she had no other choice. Our new theme song is by Killjoys, our band that we do with our pal Ashley! CONTENT NOTES : physical and emotional domestic abuse, mental illness, child abuse, whorephobic language and murder with a gun.
This month we talk about the Eriksson twins Ursula and Sabina, famous for repeatedly running into traffic on the M6 in what was reported as a case of folie à deux or shared psychosis. We discuss that event, the murder of Glenn Hollinshead and why folie à deux stories are so fascinating/spooky. We also discuss whether our neighbours are dead, nuclear submarines, the Florida Man birthday meme and paw patrol. Content notes: discussion of death, self harm, someone being severely injured in traffic, mental illness including sedation of a mentally ill person and psychiatric hospitals, and murder by stabbing. Sorry that we sound a little bit like we're under water, we're working on making remote recording sound better!
This month we discuss Katherine Knight, our first patreon requested ladykiller! Katherine Knight is sometimes referred to in the press as “Australia's Hannibal Lecter” even though the only thing they properly have in common is questionable taste in interior design. We also got press tickets to an opera, Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel which we review because we are opera critics now. We also discuss the fact that we are moving, third nipple piercings and whether we want a coyote as a pet, and mourn the loss of South East London queer dance parties (RIP Pash Neck). CONTENT NOTES: Abusive relationships and violence, animal cruelty, rape, CSA, child abuse, alcoholism, suicide, attempted suicide, attempted cannibalism, semi–graphic description of the mutilation of a dead body.
LA SPECIAL PART TWO! In this part we’re telling you all about the 1998 murder of comedian Phil Hartman (of The Simpsons and SNL fame) by his wife Brynn Omdahl, and reveal our youtube search histories and turn of the millennium daytime television habits. This episode also features the return of comic sans watch and a Happy Wanderer reprise. Jo gets kink shamed and shows off about their $10 tattoo and Elena explains how she’s the same person as Mara Wilson. CONTENT NOTES discussion of toxic relationships and domestic problems, drug and alcohol abuse, the enabling of that abuse, and murder.
LA SPECIAL! This month we are doing a two parter, part one is an LA update feat. friend of the show Dan (playing the role of a crowd of thousands) where we chat about LA murder tourism, discuss The Stranger Beside Me and make Dan try Zankou Chicken’s garlic dip. Also contains: greyhound bus misadventures, Mac DeMarco impressions, Buzzballs, being friends with exes, Elena singing The Happy Wanderer and a goth spa cult. CONTENT NOTES discussion of accidental deaths and autopsies, brief vomit mention, discussions of drug and alcohol use + we drink buzzballs.
This month the topic is Brenda Spencer, known as the grandmother of school shootings and the inspiration for The Boomtown Rats’ pretty average song I Don’t Like Mondays. We discuss Spencer’s early life, the shooting and the aftermath but as is pretty standard for us we spend most of our time talking about how the case has been discussed by media and psychologists (spoiler alert: it’s prob–le–ma–tique). We also talk about our upcoming trip to LA (!!!!), the norwegian death metal scene and DIY electrics. Elena explains what angel dust and bath salts are and continues reviewing non–alcoholic wheat beers and Jo reviews government subsidised speed (ADHD meds). PS please get in touch if you like us and are from LA and want to let us do a house show in your house, have an idea for an LA murder we can do while we’re there or have other LA related goss/tips! CONTENT NOTES this episode contains discussion of mental health meds, school shootings and briefly other mass shootings, physical and sexual child abuse, survivors not being believed, drug and alcohol use, mental health problems and being suicidal.
This month we discuss Anne Hamilton-Byrne and the Australian cult The Family, also known as the Santiniketan Park Association and the Great White Brotherhood. The Family are known for using hallucinogens to manipulate their members, horrendous child abuse and the very distinctive Village of the Damned style haircuts they made the children have. We also talk about how Hamilton–Byrne is different from male cult leaders, how cults are like abusive relationships, as well as dead worms, anthrax, buying job lots of crowns from ebay and Pass The Parcel The Horror Movie. PS please get in touch if you like us and are from LA and want to let us do a house show in your house. CONTENT NOTES this episode contains discussion of physical and psychological child abuse, drug use, mental health problems and archaic “treatments” for them, alcohol use/drunkenness
This month we discuss the murder of Larry McNabney by his wife Elisa McNabney AKA Laren Sims and her girlfriend Sarah Dutra. Sims embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from her husband's law firm and ended up poisoning him with horse tranquilliser assisted by her girlfriend. We also chat about how we'd be terrible con artists, how being one seems like a lot of effort, and how they use whatever privileges they have to make people believe them. Elena also tells the story of Anna Delvey, the millenial antihero, and explains how ghosting is like not getting the avocado you ordered with your sushi. Jo talks about how they cockblocked themselves and how fucking great it was to see Britney Spears live. CONTENT NOTES: this episode contains discussion of murder by poisoning and strangulation, suicide, decomposing bodies, domestic abuse, alcoholism, CSA, queerphobia and biphobia and the murder of children. We also drink wine and eat while recording.
In this episode we discuss the murder of Ben Wells AKA the Pizza Bomber Case and the Netflix documentary Evil Genius. The Pizza Bomber case is a tragic and bizarre case where a group of people forced (?) a pizza delivery man to commit a bank robbery using a live collar bomb and a cane gun and made him go on a convoluted scavenger hunt to attempt to save his own life. In this episode we discuss the case as well as Marjorie Diehl–Armstrong, who was sentenced for the crime, and the way she’s portrayed in the documentary. Jo also talks about the various situations they have put themselves in recently where they could have died and then proceeds to nearly die from choking on their drink, and Elena gets deep about whether you can have a script for your feet, and if so, do footballers have them? We also reveal what absolutely terrible murderers we find physically attractive and our very surprising opinions re: men who bring acoustic guitars to parties. CN: mentions of sexual assault and sexual assault of a teenager, coercive sexual relationships, mental health problems and stigma related to that, hoarding, murder by gun and bombs, cancer, vague and brief reference to vomiting, references to suicide and attempted suicide, drug use and accidental drug overdose, disordered eating and body shaming .
This time we’re going old school and talking about Belle Gunness, the first and worst catfish of all time! She is often referred to as the first american female serial killer even though she was actually from Norway and there were probably women killing people in the states long before the 19th century. We also discuss our namesake (copycat) podcast, scandi tobacco teabags, flatpack houses and Elena’s new life as a person who leans. ALSO: apologies for the slightly jumpy edit, if something doesn't make sense it's because some of our audio (RIP some gr8 jokes) mysteriously disappeared! CN: violence against a pregnant woman, miscarriage, and the murder of children as well as adults, and mention of CSA in relation to cults.
Like it says on the tin. Our gig is part of First Timers, we're playing on Saturday the 5th of May at 8:30, please come see us! Also please @ us about the golden state killer because we are losing our shit. Tell us your theories!!! We'll have a full length episode for you in May, we might be doing a proper vintage classic murderess. See you at the giiiiig!
This month’s episode is an OLYMPIC SPECIAL EPISODE! It’s about the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding scandal during the leadup to the 1994 Winter Olympics (which Jo attended!! As a baby!!) so there is no murder, but we do discuss rigid gender norms in figure skating and classist narratives about which women are considered to be capable of violence so we haven't deviated that far from our usual remit. We’ve also received some listener mail about being queers in favour of prison abolition who are into true crime, and why we talk about women and NB people who kill and not other marginalised groups, so we respond to that. Jo tries their best to explain how figure skating works but mostly just screams about Surya Bonaly, the coolest figure skater of all time, and Elena talks about moving to LA so that everyone will marry them. We also cover bidets, how overrated tall men are and emoji heart semiotics, so there’s something for everyone. CN: discussions of drug use and drinking, transphobia and ableism from Jo’s GP, physical and verbal abuse of a child, domestic abuse, rape, and physical assault (the attack itself (very briefly)).
In our most shambolic episode yet, we discuss Pablo Gomez Jr., the first non binary murderer we’ve covered on the podcast, and the way this case blew up in the right wing press because it was committed by a non binary POC and happened at UC Berkeley. We also discuss our experiences with every single antidepressant and why being medicated for your mental health problems can be the bomb dot com, Elena challenges Johan Hari to a fight in their car park, Jo starts actually crying over a video from BBC’s Big Cats, and if you listen all the way to the end (1:33:17) there’s a bonus 6 minute (edited down considerably) digression in praise of watersports, the song waterfalls by TLC and doing kink stuff whilst in hysterics. CONTENT NOTES: discussions of menstruation and related mess, surgery, bad consent practice, brief negative body self chat, drugs and alcohol chat (surgery related and recreational + we have some wine), transphobia from right wing / neo nazi media outlets and Jo’s terrible GP, and of course murder + attempted murder by stabbing. We also discuss mental health problems, including our own mental health and experiences with different medications, we know we say our GPs don’t know shit but obviously neither do we so don’t take our meds opinions too seriously and hit us up if you wanna read the google doc
A miniature festive episode feature our friends Georgia and Kylie. We'll be back with a full length episode in January. Thank you so so so much to everyone who has supported us in 2017, particularly our Patreon supporters and everyone who came to our live show in Brighton. See you next year! xxx
This month’s episode we are finally doing Dan's choice of murderer (which he won in the raffle we did during the live show) and it's Patricia Columbo! Columbo murderered her family with her much older and terrible sounding boyfriend Frank DeLuca, and we discuss that but also the netflix series Mindhunter with our pal Georgia, our first ever guest! We also hate on sound engineers, introduce our new feature Comic Sans Watch and chat printing t-shirts whilst dyslexic, pooping on Mount Everest and Elena’s evil karaoke alter ego. We have also launched a Patreon which we’ve set up so that we can cover our costs (mainly Soundcloud prescription), if you want to support us then you can do that here: https://www.patreon.com/ladykillerspod/. If we get more than what it costs to do this we want to donate to groups and organisations that support survivors of sexual and domestic violence, this month we want to give money to Not Your Fault, a support group for trans men, cis men and non binary people who have experienced sexual violence, and we really encourage you to donate to them directly here: https://www.paypal.me/notyourfault. Our podcasts of the month are: @leckerpodcast and the youtube channel Ask a Mortician (yes we know that's not a podcast), and Ben's etsy that we mention can be found here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/NMJNB CONTENT NOTES: We discuss a sexual relationship between a 16 year old and a grown ass man as well as some gross reporting that sexualises her, there's a bestiality mention, and obviously discussion of murder, including the murder of a 13 year old child. We also eat pizza and drink beer as we record (but we aren't drunk).
This month’s episode is a hometown murder episode, about the crimes of Ane Lykke Reppe and Joanna Dennehy! We discuss how gross victim blame-y and pathologising narratives are (as usual), compare tabloid coverage in Scandinavia vs the UK and whether Axe Murdering Friend of a Friend would make a good band name. Also, Jo saw a ghost and Elena talks about the demise of their pink fake fur bikini bottoms (RIP). We have also launched a Patreon which we’ve set up so that we can cover our costs (mainly our Soundcloud subscription), if you want to support us then you can do that here: https://www.patreon.com/ladykillerspod/ But no pressure! If we somehow get more than what it costs to run this podcast and buy some nice true crime books we will make some merch and donate to domestic abuse charities like RISE who we did a raffle in support of in the last episode! CONTENT NOTES: Contains discussions of medical trials and cervical biopsies, attempted rape, a purported fake rape allegation and some gross reporting in relation to that, a relationship between a 15yo and a 21yo, physical and emotional abuse, mental health problems, self harm and murder (obviously).
This month’s episode is a live recording from Brighton! We talk about the Slenderman Stabbings, a case where two 12 year olds attempted to murder their friend because Slenderman (of creepypasta/internet fame) told them to. We discuss the relationship between being a teenage edgelord and murder, Elena makes everyone promise to contact them via ouija board when they die, everyone agrees Richard Dawkins a dick and Jo does a dramatic reading of serial killer fanfiction so there’s something for everyone. As part of the live show we did a raffle in support of RISE, an amazing domestic abuse charity for all people affected by domestic violence in the Brighton/Hove area, they are the only DA service in the UK that supports trans people! Donate to them here: http://www.riseuk.org.uk/ Let us know if you want us to come to your town and do a recording in your living room! Let us know if you wanna sponsor us and give us free makeup and or coffee! Content notes: mental health problems and MH treatment, bullying, attempted murder. There is also a mention of the transphobic murder of a sex worker towards the beginning of the episode.
The topic of this month’s episode is Abe Sada, a woman who in 1936 killed her partner and cut off his penis. Abe is usually portrayed as a Sexy Geisha Demon Woman™ and we try to challenge some of the sexist, whorephobic and racist ways people normally talk about her! We also discuss why eels aren't kosher, Jo somehow manages to bring figure skating into it and Elena reveals some unique knife storage tips. NOTE: At one point we use the term “female bodied” when talking about violence against women which is not cool, we definitely didn’t mean in an essentialist or TERF-y way because fuck that shit (also what does "a female body" even mean), and we apologise for using that term! We kept it in as the discussion is important, but we’re sorry and will do better in the future. Other content warnings: substance use (discussion of + we drink while recording), murder by strangulation, genital mutilation, sexual assault, non consensual sex work, terrible parenting, victim blaming, necrophilic activities and racism/exoticization.
Ladykillers is a podcast about women who kill, and how we talk about them. This month we tackle the Parker–Hulme murder, famous for the sensationalist TEEN LESBIAN MURDER coverage and the Peter Jackson film Heavenly Creatures. We also discuss how much Jo’s curtains look like vaginas, whether you can ride a horse around London and if knowing the truth behind every crime would be great or terrible superpower to have. If you want to contact us, we're on twitter @ladykillerspod and our email is ladykillerspod@gmail.com! Also please rate and subscribe on itunes so we can get sponsored by lipstick companies. Content notes for this episode: discussions of racism, ableism, homophobia and a coercive sexual relationship between an adult an a minor, and of course murder. And a brief mention of weeing and being sick!
Ladykillers is a podcast about women who kill, and how we talk about them. In part two of our Manson Girls episode, we discuss the LaBianca murders, the arrests and the trial, and go into more detail on Kasabian, Krenwinkel and Atkins. We also discuss terrible decisions we made as children and compare Thatcher to Manson, while the audio cave slowly collapses and we lose all feeling in our butts. If you want to contact us, we're on twitter @ladykillerspod and our email is ladykillerspod@gmail.com! Also please rate and subscribe on itunes so we can get sponsored by lipstick companies. Content notes for this episode includes: discussions of racism, cult tactics, manipulation, and murder and mutilation.
Ladykillers is a podcast about women who kill, and how we talk about them. This is part one of a two parter about the Manson Family, which covers Manson himself, the techniques he used to manipulate is followers, as well as the Tate murders. We also talk shit about men who message us on dating sites, Elena reminisces about LA and Jo briefly forgets how old they are, so there's something for everyone. If you want to contact us, we're on twitter @ladykillerspod and our email is ladykillerspod@gmail.com The next episode will cover the LaBianca murders and the trial, as well as more info on Patricia Krenwinkel, Linda Kasabian and Susan Atkins. Content notes for this episode includes: racism, discussions of grown ass men having sex with teenagers, and discussions of murder and mutilation, including that of a pregnant woman. Oh and we swear a lot in this one.
Ladykillers is a podcast about women who kill, and how we talk about them. This month Elena and Jo talk about women who tell people they intend to commit murder, or even just straight up confess to murder, and who aren't taken seriously. Elena talks about hating therapists with sympathetic voices, Jo talks about their first ever stalker, and once again we're interrupted by a loud noise, so if that bugs you skip ahead a few seconds when the doorbell rings at 37m38s. We also forgot to beg people to sponsor us but want to remind you all that we will gladly sell out, especially if any makeup brands want to sponsor us.
Ladykillers is a podcast about women who kill, and how we talk about them. In the first episode which is also a HALLOWEEN SPECIAL, Elena Colman and Jo Hauge discuss serial killer Aileen Wuornos! Wuornos’ gender non-conforming ways made her both a cultural icon and the topic of many hugely profitable “man hating lesbian murderess” stories. We also touch on serial killer fanfiction, fireworks and our anxiety disorders, so there’s something for everyone. Content note: as well as discussions of murder, this episode contains discussion of child sexual abuse, child neglect and sexual assault. It also gets somewhat loud around 1h1m for a few seconds so you might want to skip ahead if loud noises bother you! Jo also wants to apologise for being cisnormative in their discussion of why female serial killers generally don’t jizz all over crime scenes.
