Mac DeMarco talks with Sodajerker about his songwriting process and his latest record, Guitar. The Canadian singer-songwriter reflects on his lo-fi, DIY approach to music-making, how personal themes of identity and home permeate his work, and why he definitely doesn't want to guest on your track.
Brady is an American musician, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in New York City who has played in various bands and groups of different genres and styles, most notably 90's nostalgic alternative rock. Similar to a Mac DeMarco-type figure, Brady writes all of the music and records all or most of the instruments on his songs. Raised in the small town of Pelham, NY, Brady is on a mission to write, record, and release as much new and refreshing rock music as possible as a male solo artist within the modern indie rock world. Today's Song of the Day is “Holy” from Mac DeMarco's album Guitar, out now.Mac DeMarco will be performing at First Avenue on Wednesday, May 6.
Mac DeMarco has long been loved for his laid-back guitar noodlings and so called “slacker” rock. He sometimes calls it "jizz jazz", but whatever it is, it's gained him a loving fanbase across the world. For the past few years, Mac has moved away from traditional albums in favour of brain dumping huge swaths of music – a lot of it without lyrics. But now he's returned with an old school album, and for him he says it's capturing the essence of where he's at right now. What matters. On the day he released Guitar, I invited Mac to Take 5. Fall into Mac's world, you'll feel better for it.Mac DeMarco's Take 5 song choices:Martin Kolberger + Ralf Illenburger – 'Waves'Akiko Yano – 'A Worried Girl'Michael Manring – 'Welcoming'Bruce Cockburn – 'You Get Bigger As You Go'Bob Dylan – 'Alberta #1'00:21 Mac DeMarco's Musical Journey01:13 Reflecting on Life and Music03:06 The Essence of Music and Collaboration05:45 Martin Kolberger + Ralf Illenburger – 'Waves'06:23 Philosophical Musings and Personal Anecdotes09:25 Akiko Yano and Musical Inspirations13:39 Akiko Yano – 'A Worried Girl'14:08 Guitars and Their Stories16:37 Canoeing and Nature's Influence on Music19:27 Michael Manring – 'Welcoming'20:18 Exploring Jazz and Its Mystique23:01 Creating Music Independently25:58 Reflecting on Canadian Roots29:39 Bruce Cockburn – 'You Get Bigger As You Go'30:06 Reflecting on new album Guitar and singing falsetto more33:26 The Influence of Bob Dylan37:20 Bob Dylan – 'Alberta #1'38:11 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsOther Take 5 episodes like this:Flaming Lips' frontman Wayne CoyneLucy DacusSharon Van Etten

Steven and Ian begin with a conversation about Virgin, the new album by Lorde out today (2:20). Judging by the singles, it's not clear if this is going to be the comeback she needs. They also talked about Guitar, the new album just announced by Mac DeMarco, his first "proper" record of songs in years (15:15).Then they pivoted to a conversation about the weird state of music in 2025 (24:14), which already seems like a weaker year than 2024, before they each listed their five favorite releases of the past six months (30:26).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Today's Song of the Day is “Home” from Mac DeMarco's album Guitar, out August 22.Mac DeMarco will be performing at First Avenue on Wednesday, May 6.
Playlist:Mac DeMarco - HomeEyedress, Mac DeMarco - My Simple JeepMen I Trust - Billie ToppyTOPS - Falling on my SwordSalvana - DesiertaThe World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die - Auguries of GuiltThe Beths - No JoySPRINTS - Descartesbar italia - CowbellaLorde - HammerBiig Piig - DecimalPinkPantheress - IllegalAmaarae - S.M.O.Joy Orbison, Overmono, Skiifall - LippyLittle Simz - ThiefErykah Badu, The Alchemist - Next To YouYukimi - Break Me DownBarry Can't Swim - All My FriendsEscuchar audio
▶ Sommaire : 00:00 Introduction 02:53 MUSIQUE : Cola Boyy - Babylon 04:35 La découverte 13:33 MUSIQUE : Cola Boyy - One of There Winters Will Take Me (demo) 16:37 La signature 23:14 TEMOIGNAGE : Ross Harris 26:42 La France, une seconde maison 27:54 MUSIQUE : Cola Boyy - All Power to The People 30:32 Oxnard, Californie 34:21 MUSIQUE : Cola Boyy - Penny Girl 37:34 Un véritable militant communiste 45:05 TEMOIGNAGE : Juan Wauters 49:32 MUSIQUE : Cola Boyy - To Be Rich Should Be a Crime 51:40 Produire de la musique avec Cola Boyy 1:01:22 MUSIQUE : Cola Boyy - Walk Again 1:03:48 Un pur talent musical 1:07:41 MUSIQUE : Cola Boyy - Mink 1:10:35 Entourage artistique 1:14:47 MUSIQUE : Cola Boyy - Kid Born in Space feat. Stephen Sol is an indie musician based in Washington, D.C. His music blends classic rock, folk, and indie influences, drawing inspiration from the likes of Mac DeMarco, My Morning Jacket, and The Beatles. His latest single, Eternal Peace, a deeply introspective track that explores life, the beyond, and the serenity that awaits us all.Blending classic rock, folk, and contemporary indie influences, Sol delivers his signature soulful vocals and intricate guitar work, crafting a song that meditates on the unseen forces that guide us. The chorus—“The sound of nothing calls to me, the sound of eternal peace”—resonates as a soothing mantra, embracing the beauty of silence and the vast unknown. Through evocative lyrics like “Now I can breathe, life runs in me, my body feels vibrations, baby, and my spirit is free”, the track channels the essence of a spiritual awakening.“Eternal Peace is about the connection to something greater than ourselves—the timeless energy that binds us all,” says Sol. “I wanted to create a song that feels like a bridge between this world and the next, offering a sense of peace that never fades.”His musical journey began at 14, inspired by his grandfather "Boots," a fan of Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. Lately, he's drawn inspiration from Zach Bryan's raw storytelling, especially with a personal connection—his cousin, Read Connolly, plays banjo and pedal steel in Bryan's band. Stephen's recent performance highlights include two sold-out headlining shows at Galactic Panther in August and October 2024. He's also played at SoFar Sounds shows alongside acts such as LB199X and Dreemy Alpha. Looking forward, Stephen is set to release a string of singles, including "Hum of Love," "Toxic," "Águila, "and "Eternal Peace," with his debut album released in 2025.Website stephensol.comwww.youtube.com/@StephenSolmusic

Blasting Tchaikovsky at 5:00 in the morning, Billy Joel‘s next level move, and deep cuts from grocery store's playlists. Cassie Ramone (Vivian Girls, The Babies, Cassie Ramone) Cassie Ramone- “Sweetheart LP”: https://www.cassieramone.com/store "Perhaps Ramone's most unexpected move so far is breaking a five-year silence with a surprise video essay album, Sweetheart, uploaded to YouTube days after it was completed. Composed of 11 DIY phone vignettes filmed verité style by Ramone, the footage is raw and diaristic and is soundtracked by the album in its entirety. Despite her lengthy discography with band projects, Sweetheart is only Ramone's second solo album; but it's possibly her best record to date, the culmination of almost two decades of songwriting and honing her sound. Heartbreaking and raw, and featuring her sharpest writing yet, Sweetheart was crafted with collaborator Dylan White from song fragments Ramone sang into a voice recorder over bonfires at night. The finished songs range from distorted, visceral head cleaners like “They Hide Their Eyes” to melancholy starlit waltzes touched by tragedy (“Joy To The World”) to some of the catchiest songs Ramone's ever written—take “Together” or the Mac Demarco-featuring “The Only Way I Know How” as examples. Recorded at White's Valley Structures studio on frequent trips south to Richmond, Virginia—Ramone lives in Brooklyn—Sweetheart peels back the curtain, just a little, on the swirling, creative energy at the heart of Cassie Ramone's music. What's revealed is a frankness and emotional truth that's always been there, informed by classic American songwriting and years of freewheeling living. That Ramone has released it on her own label—created with White in true DIY fashion—should come as no surprise." On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Adam listen to Bell's next pick, Mac DeMarco's "This Old Dog". Released in 2017, it was his third studio album. Some of the themes of the album are Mac's relationship with his father, aging, and relationships. On the album, Mac plays every instrument himself, while also handling production. Reviews for the album were overwhelmingly positive, with most critics praising the musicianship, tone and writing. But what will the boys think? Will they complain about "One More Love Song"? Come along and find out!
Vinyl records play a significant role in Jay and Deon's lives. They're 100% obsessed with music. But how did this madness all start? Well, episode 40 of LLR examines their origin stories. Hot August Bites continues with what is likely the least hot food there is: salad. Ice cream is not a food that's a desert. Anyways for this enterprising entre we three lads explore Mac DeMarco's 2014 slacksterpiece, Salad Days. Per Wikipedia Mac calls his genre "jizz jazz" which we do not say on the pod or ever again I am buying the flashing thing from Men In Black. Also up for discussion: We mark 20 years since the most famous toilet/bridge disaster, pants cannot be bought in Joe Brandon's America, and Doug the cartoon forces us to make an offensive jingle. Hello, Hello! In this episode, Chris and Nick talk with filmmakers Dexter Strong Buell and Derek Mindler about their experiences in the indie film space, including Dexter's recent short film "The South Shore" and Derek's work as a cinematographer. They also discuss challenges in filmmaking and education, using new technology like 360 videos for location scouting, and an upcoming film school in New York City focused on below-the-line skills. We also talk about: - The differences between working on indie film sets versus studio sets - Finding success through creative solutions in the indie film world - Bridging the gap between film education and the current film industry - A student-made feature film that was widely distributed on Amazon Prime after starting as a high school short - The cultural impact of low-budget films that are financially successful but not necessarily well-received critically Enjoy! Indie Artist Spotlight Artist: Steve Lewis Track: Get You Recording artist Steve Lewis is a writer and performer who can take a listener to a special place, one where the music transports you and time slips away. While straddling the line between riff rock and melodic lyricism, his material evokes stylists like Kurt Vile and Mac DeMarco while luxuriating in steady grooves and high energy. “Get You” is a high-energy rock tune with a celebratory and conversational lyric about the excitement and optimism of finding a new love. https://www.stevelewismusic.com/ https://www.instagram.com/stevelewismusic/ https://www.tiktok.com/@stevelewismusic MAKE IT x Cotton Bureau: https://cottonbureau.com/people/the-make-it-podcast Bonsai Shop: https://www.bonsai.film/shop Newsletter: https://beacons.ai/themakeitpodcast Listen: https://link.chtbl.com/makeit - https://link.chtbl.com/makeitonspotify Watch: https://link.chtbl.com/makeitonyoutube?at=1406156285

In this episode, we open up the yellow Kanken of history and unpack one of the most influential archetypes of the 2010s: the art hoe. We rediscover the work of the Art Hoe Collective, revisit the Tumblr art historical canon from Matisse's cutouts to Van Gogh's sunflowers, and trace the aesthetic's propagation through musicians like Mac Demarco and Tyler the Creator. We also discuss the forms in which art hoeism lives on today, from TikTok's indie teens to zillennial art world professionals. [video available on Spotify] today i have a very special guest. someone who actually shifted my music taste in a big way. today we have mac demarco. when i was like 15 i found his music on vine, and i've been such a big fan ever since. i think what's so special about mac's music is the way it always sounds like him. whether it's kind of funky, deep and sentimental, or just an instrumental, it always feels like him. his last album having almost 200 songs and being like nine hours long is so intriguing to me. he's going the complete opposite direction of the industry, and i must know more. so i present to you, mac demarco.
