Send us a textIt was a pleasure to welcome Leonard Ambrose to the JustPod to discuss his representation of the notorious defendant Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong. Ambrose obtained an acquittal of Armstrong after she shot her boyfriend six times as he lay on a couch in 1984. But Armstrong is possibly more well known for her eventual murder conviction in the bizarre Pizza Bomber case in Erie, Pennsylvania—the subject of the Netflix series “Evil Genius.” That case arose from the August 28, 2003 robbery of a bank in Erie Township by Brian Wells, a pizza delivery man. What made the robbery so unusual, and so macabre, was the locked collar around Mr. Wells' neck when he entered the bank. The collar contained a ticking time bomb that, after a standoff with Pennsylvania law enforcement, exploded, resulting in Mr. Wells' death. Armstrong was sentenced to life imprisonment, plus 30 years, and died in prison in 2017 of natural causes—unlike her victims.
The Compendium Podcast: An Assembly of Fascinating and Intriguing Things
In this episode of The Compendium, I tell Adam the horrifying yet intriguing case of the Pizza Bomber Heist. On August 28, 2003, Brian Wells, a pizza delivery driver in Erie, Pennsylvania, was coerced into robbing a PNC Bank with a bomb locked around his neck as part of a horifying life or death scavenger hunt. This shocking event led investigators into a labyrinth of conspiracies involving Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong and Bill Rothstein. The case, often likened to a real-life "Saw" movie, remains one of the most intricate in FBI history. Imagine a quiet town in Pennsylvania, August 28, 2003. The stage was set for a chilling tale that will send shivers down your spine. Brian Wells, an unassuming pizza delivery driver, stepped into a bank, but it wasn't a simple transaction he sought. No, he demanded a staggering $250,000, warning of a bomb with a deadly countdown. His voice trembled as he spoke those ominous words to the teller. When Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong took the stand, one could almost feel the collective anticipation in the courtroom. The jury watched, their faces etched with skepticism. And the moment she began to speak, it became palpable—her words weren't convincing them. After her performance, the jury sequestered for 11 grueling hours, dissecting every piece of evidence, every testimony. When they reemerged, the weight of their decision was monumental. In final episode of "Some Women Just Want to Watch the World Burn," we reveal Diehl Armstrongs's fate, and explore conflicting interpretations of the, "truth," behind the "Pizza Bomber," murders...This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5496890/advertisement
Within mere hours of dialing 911, Bill Rothstein found himself in police custody. His claim of enduring weeks of emotional agony was corroborated by the evidence investigators unearthed at his residence: a collection of power tools and supplies of professional grade, akin to the materials used in crafting the notorious collar bomb. In the labyrinth of Bill's personal effects, authorities discovered a handwritten suicide note. Authored in stark black ink, the note conveyed his regret, "To those who cared for or about me," identified a corpse in his freezer as James Roden, and explicitly stated he "did not kill him, nor participate in his death." Intriguingly, the note carried a specific disclaimer: “This has nothing to do with the Wells case.” On today's episode we delve into the enigmatic friend for whom Rothstein was storing a body, and the unsettling aftermath of his 911 call.Listen to PART II of Kinda Murdery's investigation of the, "Pizza Bomber," story now!CALL 888-MURDERY that's 888-687-3379 to share YOUR Kinda Murdery story and inspire and episode of the show!Sources: https://www.ranker.com/list/weirdest-true-stories/patrick-thorntonhttps://pizzabomber.com/timeline-of-pizza-bomber-events/ https://www.goerie.com/story/news/crime/2018/05/01/diehl-armstrong-unique-deadly-criminal/12255559007/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Brian_Wells https://medium.com/p/e4114152b60e https://medium.com/@drhpod/the-pennsylvania-pizza-bomber-6986f451eb3d https://www.goerie.com/story/news/crime/2018/08/28/for-erie-s-diehl-armstrong/984919007/ https://www.tmz.com/2018/05/27/jerry-clark-evil-genius-fbi-agent-denies-hooker-jessica-confession/This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5496890/advertisement

If you were to turn on the afternoon news, on August 28, 2003 in Erie, PA, you may have seen Brian Wells on your screen. What started out as a normal day delivering pizzas progressed into Brian walking into a PNC Bank with a bomb strapped to his neck. It didn't end well for Brian, and it didn't end well for Jim Roden or Robert Thomas. What do all of these men have in common? They came into contact with one of the world's most tumultuous, female serial killers, Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong. Ashley examines Marjorie's upbringing, her struggles with mental illness, and the victims who died by her hand.

MM's telling a story that is full of way too many twists and turns to be contained in one episode: the 2003 murder of Brian Wells, which included a collar bomb, a bank heist, and lots of evil masterminding from Marjorie Diehl Armstrong. Also included, a BTS/Ginger Demon update. MM texting Katy about booby traps prompts no context questions or follow-ups. Authorities go on the worst scavenger hunt ever. Intelligent and unstable, Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong always had a way with men. But they never seemed to live for long. Nobody connected her to their deaths — until she roped an innocent hostage into an elaborate bank heist, and forced him to wear a collar bomb.
Marjorie was a gifted musician with a magnetic personality. She was also a black widow. Brian thought the bomb was a fake but then realized it was real. She held him down, placed the bomb around his neck and locked it. #pizzabomber #collarbomb #marjoriediehlarmstrong #brianwells #williamrothstein #kennethbarnes #floydstockton #truecrimepodcast #truecrime

On Tuesday, we are talked about one of the most diabolical and compelling crimes ever to happen in our hometown: The Pizza Bomber case. With a cast of characters like Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong, William Rothstein, pizza delivery guy Brian Wells, and the recently-deceased Kenneth Barnes, this case shocked the city with crimes including bank robbery, murder, a body in a freezer, and an impossibly bizarre no-win scavenger hunt. The experts were with us: Dr. Jerry Clark, retired Special Agent with the FBI who investigated the Pizza Bomber case from the very beginning; and Ed Palattella, Erie Times News reporter who followed the case and had special contact with Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong throughout the investigation. Dr. Clark and Ed Palattella are the co-authors of three books, including Pizza Bomber: The Untold Story of America’s Most Shocking Bank Robbery; Mania and Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong: Inside the Mind of a Female Serial Killer; and A History of Heists: Bank Robbery in America.
Evil Genius: The True Story of America's Most Diabolical Bank Heist is a 2018 true crime documentary series about the murder of Brian Wells, a high-profile 2003 incident often referred to as the "collar bomb" or "pizza bomber" case. It was released on Netflix as a four-part series on May 11, 2018.Trey Borzillieri got the idea to make a series about a high-profile crime after watching Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills. He became captivated with the murder of Brian Wells when evidence emerged that Wells may have been forced to commit the robbery with a bomb strapped to his neck. He began interviewing people around Erie, Pennsylvania where the incident had occurred. He began a correspondence with Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong in 2005, two years after Wells's death, because she might have information about the cold case. He spent years investigating the case, including interacting extensively with Diehl-Armstrong while she was in prison. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Let us paint a picture: The weirdest bank robbery in history, a collar-bomb, a cane-gun, three dead men, and two homes so hoard-ey they required hazmat suits. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you “Evil Genius.” In 2003 in Erie, Pennsylvania, a robbery gone wrong and a terrifying public murder capture the nation's attention, and a bizarre collection of Midwestern hoarders, outcasts, and lawbreakers play cat-and-mouse with the FBI. Eventually, a middle-aged mastermind named Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong -- once a town beauty, now a woman grappling with mental illness -- is arrested. But 15 years later, this documentary proves there’s more to the conspiracy and murders than was ever thought. **Looking for more TCO?** [Check out our bonus episodes on Patreon!](https://www.patreon.com/TrueCrimeObsessed) We covered "Serial" episode-by-episode and capped the series off with an interview with Rabia Chaudry--Adnan's friend who brought his story to Sarah Koenig. In this episode we discuss the murder of Ben Wells AKA the Pizza Bomber Case and the Netflix documentary Evil Genius. The Pizza Bomber case is a tragic and bizarre case where a group of people forced (?) a pizza delivery man to commit a bank robbery using a live collar bomb and a cane gun and made him go on a convoluted scavenger hunt to attempt to save his own life. In this episode we discuss the case as well as Marjorie Diehl–Armstrong, who was sentenced for the crime, and the way she’s portrayed in the documentary. Jo also talks about the various situations they have put themselves in recently where they could have died and then proceeds to nearly die from choking on their drink, and Elena gets deep about whether you can have a script for your feet, and if so, do footballers have them? We also reveal what absolutely terrible murderers we find physically attractive and our very surprising opinions re: men who bring acoustic guitars to parties. CN: mentions of sexual assault and sexual assault of a teenager, coercive sexual relationships, mental health problems and stigma related to that, hoarding, murder by gun and bombs, cancer, vague and brief reference to vomiting, references to suicide and attempted suicide, drug use and accidental drug overdose, disordered eating and body shaming .
n August 2003, an attempted bank robbery in Erie, Pa., made news headlines across America when the robbery-gone-wrong turned into a public murder. The attempted robber was a pizza delivery driver who had a bomb locked around his neck. Known as the "pizza bomber" case, a manhunt ensued to find out who was responsible for the crime. Authorities eventually arrested Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong for the delivery man's death. She was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison, but this four-part Netflix original documentary series sets out to prove that there's more to the conspiracy and murder than what was previously thought.
