At just 18 months old, Ben Shenton was handed over to a woman who claimed she was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. That woman was Anne Hamilton-Byrne, the leader of a secretive doomsday cult called The Family. For 14 years, Ben lived cut off from the outside world—beaten, starved, drugged, and taught to stay “unseen, unheard, unknown.” The cult twisted Christianity into a tool of fear and control. Ben was finally rescued at age 15 during a police raid. Today, he’s an advocate for survivors and a pastor who still follows the teachings of Jesus Christ, just not the version the cult tried to force on him. You can find Ben’s website, Rescue the Family, here, and his book Life Behind the Wire here. On this week's episode, I'm joined by Ben Shenton. Ben is a survivor of "The Family," a notorious New Age cult led by Anne Hamilton-Byrne. At 18 months old, Ben was handed over to Hamilton-Byrne, who falsely claimed to be his mother. Within the cult, children were subjected to severe abuse, including forced conformity through identical appearances and strict discipline. In 1987, at age 15, Shenton was among several children rescued during a police raid on the cult's property. Ben has since become an advocate for survivors of cults and abusive environments and works now as a pastor. He authored the book Life Behind The Wire, detailing his experiences within "The Family" and his journey toward healing.Ben's website - https://www.rescuethefamily.com/Dark Finds Podcast IG - https://www.instagram.com/darkfindspodcast/Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/darkfindspodcast/membershipDark Finds IG - https://www.instagram.com/dark.finds/Dark Finds YouTube Channel for more dark long-form content - https://www.youtube.com/@DarkFindsChannelDark Finds book - https://amzn.eu/d/3VHPOTj Hosted on Acast. How did Anne Hamilton-Byrne control her followers? How did the police eventually catch her? And what happened to the dozens of children that were in the 'care' of The Family. Lex de Man investigated The Family for more than four years, and helped rescue dozens of children from the abuse of Anne Hamilton-Byrne and her followers. Join Lex as he walks host Brent Sanders through the case in exclusive detail, and explains how he and the Victorian Police were able to arrest and charge Anne Hamilton-Byrne. This episode is the second part of the story about The Family. We learn about the incredible survivors and cycle breakers of the Australian cult, ran by Anne-Hamilton Byrne.
Com uma combinação de manipulação, drogas e lavagem cerebral, Anne convenceu seus seguidores de que era uma figura divina, causando traumas profundos que repercutem até hoje.
This episode is Part 1 of a glimpse inside of the Australian cult called The Family. We will take a look into the early life of Anne Hamilton-Byrne and the foundation of the cult.
The Family, also known as the Santiniketan Park Association or the Great White Brotherhood, was an Australian New Age group formed in the mid 1960s under the leadership of Anne Hamilton-Byrne. The group taught a hodgepodge of Western and Eastern religious doctrines, with Hamilton-Byrne claiming to have been a reincarnation of Jesus. Classic cult move, Anne....The group became the centre of controversy when its compound in Olinda, Victoria, was raided by police in August 1987 amid allegations of child abuse. All children were removed from the premises, and were discovered to have been adopted through illegal means. Hamilton-Byrne and her husband were eventually arrested in 1993 and charged with conspiracy to defraud and to commit perjury in relation to the adoption scams, but those charges were eventually dropped and they fled on the lamb to the Catskill Mountains of New York.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Anne Hamilton-Byrne may have been a yoga instructor, but when you are of the firm belief that you are the reincarnation of Jesus Christ himself and that the world is coming to an end, teaching yoga is not going to be your career path. Starting a cult on the other hand, is far more apt. Join us, and a few very special guests, as we talk about heavy yoga, procuring children and drug fuelled rituals. This week's podcast gets back to our roots in weird cults. The cult du jour is The Family, an Australian group also known as the Santiniketan Park Association and the Great White Brotherhood (yes, they are that racist). The cult started as a new age group led by founder Anne Hamilton-Byrne, that taught a strange amalgamation of Christianity and Eastern Religion with Hamilton-Byrne claiming to be a reincarnation of Jesus Christ. Sadly, the group eventually led down the path of Hamilton-Byrne skimming money from everyone involved and a large number of children being illegally adopted and abused. While the cult is nominally still around, it faded after the 90s when the abuses were brought to light and charges were filed. Hamilton-Byrne lived to be 98 years old, passing away in 2019.
From the age of two, David Freeman was hidden with a group of children in a remote country house, described as a school that was actually a prison. The cult, led by the charismatic and seriously loopy Anne Hamilton-Byrne, survived for 20 years. David spent most of his adult life trying to forget - moving to Iceland, marrying, fathering children and working outdoors as a roof contractor until he finally understood he needed to deal with his past. After years of substance abuse and nearly committing suicide, David reached out to one of the original investigators, Julie Cochrane, who had become a psychologist. For the first time, David tells his story.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Deep in the suburbs of south-east Melbourne, a young woman who believed herself to be the reincarnation of Christ, began to build a following based on New Age ideologies and practices. Anne Hamilton-Byrne quickly developed a following of adults who would worship her like a god, and do anything, including break the law, to help "The Family". The cult set up a network to facilitate the fraudulent adoption of children to create the next master race. These children were given heavy doses of sedatives and hallucinogens and had their food restricted as punishment for breaking the rules. It wasn't until one of them ran away that authorities became aware of the cult operating right under their noses.

The series is inspired by the real-life Australian cult The Family and its founder Anne Hamilton-Byrne, who is one of the rare female cult leaders in history. Well it's not The Thunder From Down Under as much as the Bewitches wish, but Amy and Krista are bringing you two Aussie reincarnation tales. Krista's story is a bit more light-hearted as a little boy named Billy from Sydney (now five years old) believes he is Princess Diana herself. He's got some pretty eerie details of the Scottish Balmoral Castle with unicorns as one piece of proof as well as the very haunting memory of being a princess until the sirens came, an allusion to The Princess of Whales' tragic and sudden death. Then, it's not all in the family when Amy covers the sinister cult leader Anne Hamilton Byrne, who preached to her followers, mostly orphaned, missing or stolen children, that she is Jesus Christ reincarnated. She called her cult, The Family and tormented and abused dozens of children in a very modest and remote house on Lake Elidon, just outside Melbourne.

Jeepers Creepers!Ash dives into the life of Anne Hamilton-Byrne, and how she eventually became the leader of a yoga/LSD/baby-napping/Children of the Corn cult. Born Evelyn Edwards, Anne grew up poor and spent time in orphanages in rich neighborhoods as a child. Seeing how the upperclass lived, she always knew that she wanted a piece of the pie. When Evelyn's first husband died, she reinvented herself as a glamorous yoga teacher and medium named Anne Hamilton. Preaching a mishmash of Christianity, Eastern mysticism and apocalyptic prophecy, she convinced hundreds that she was Jesus, using large quantities of LSD on her members and herself. One day she had a vision that the world was going to end in some horrific way and that she needed to start a master race of children who would be left to re-educate what's left of the world. So she basically began stealing babies and made them all look alike, with the same clothes, haircuts and bleached blonde hair. The cult she created gave her that sense of family with the added bonus of power and control she had always wanted, and then she began to bring children into the fold. Hey Soul Friend, in this episode we explore the Death tarot card or the energy of Pluto/Scorpio by telling a True Crime story. USA debuted yet another take on the still-open cases of the murders of Tupac Shakur and Christopher "Biggie" Wallace last week, this one featuring pretty much every procedural Hey, It's That Guy! you can think of (Brent Sexton, Jamie McShane) plus a couple top names (Black Mirror's Jimmi Simpson, Josh "Mr. Fergie" Duhamel, Dwayne Johnson) (...right? hey, the IMDb doesn't lie), and a great deal of table-setting exposition to locate us in three timelines. It's a little heavy-handed about explaining the challenges for investigators, at least for anyone who's familiar at all with true-crime material involving LAPD -- Rampart; OJ: Made In America -- but it's done well, and fairly economically. What's more, I felt no urge to Google during the runtime: always a sign of compelling quality. We'll let you know if you should keep watching. We'll also let you know if The Family is too bleak to manage. The story of Anne Hamilton-Byrne's doomsday/LSD cult, whose primary hallmark was stealing babies and raising them in an intermittent-reinforcement hellscape of beatings, brainwashing, and shrooms, features interviews with former "members" of The Family, plus the journalists and cops who tried to get someone, anyone to agree the Hamilton-Byrnes needed to go to jail. Can kids starved of love (and literally starved) learn to make their ways in the world as adults -- and parents? Should the filmmakers have split the material up into several installments, to investigate claims of Illuminatoid contacts in Melbourne's power structure -- and to give viewers a break? And does The Family belong to the, uh, family of "extremely affecting; can never watch again" documentaries headed up by Dear Zachary? Toby and I mull these questions and more before marinating in some Powerpuff Girls to cleanse the palate, in The Blotter Presents Episode 47.
