Author N. Leigh Hunt joins the podcast and talks about his book "I Don't Like Mondays: The True Story Behind America's First Modern School Shooting". This book uncovers key details behind the 1979 school shooting at Cleveland Elementary School, in the San Carols community of San Diego, CA. On the morning of January 29, 1979, 16 y.o. Brenda Spencer shot several elementary children and adults, killing principal Burton Wragg and custodian Mike Suchar, who both died trying to help the children. Spencer infamously said "I don't like Mondays" when asked why she committed the murders. Spencer pled guilty to two counts of murder and assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to 35-life in prison. The Boomtown Rats released a song in July 1979 with the title "I Don't Like Mondays" which was very controversial and still popular in the UK. N. Leigh Hunt spent years researching and uncovering shocking details from officers, investigators, and lost police dispatches. He has interviewed people who were on the scene and local reporters who spoke with the perpetrator directly after her shooting spree. Hunt has even cultivated an unlikely rapport with the killer and shed light on previously unknown details about her upbringing and influences.Click here to purchase the book from Amazon (we do not receive any money for this referral). School shootings are depressingly common nowadays, but back in 1979, they were practically unheard of. And though many people may not be aware of it, the first “modern” type of school shooting to take place in the United States was perpetrated by a slight, red-haired, sixteen-year-old girl named Brenda Spencer, who decided on one January … Continue reading Episode 352 LIVE: Brenda Spencer – The “I Don’t Like Mondays” Shooting
Not so fun fact: there have been 200 mass shootings which have claimed over 11,000 lives in the United States this year. For those counting, we're at 130 days this year which means we're averaging more than one shooting a day. Those numbers ARE. NOT. O. K. Gun violence needs to end in this country and I feel something I can do is remind my listeners about the stories of survivors and victims. Brenda Spencer is known as the mother of school shootings. Hopefully by hearing her story, we do not forget the lives of the victims of Grover Cleveland Elementary School. School shootings have unfortunately become a common occurrence but none were ever committed by a woman until one Monday in 1979 in California changed that. Brenda Spencer, then 16, injured 8 children and killed a principal and janitor at an elementary school across from her house. When asked why, she simply stated "I don't like Mondays." Tonight we discuss from the survivors and their families point of view how that day still haunts them. Sponsor - Calm Your Body Down LLC 'Salem's Secret' by Peter Gundry

'I Don't Like Mondays' by The Boomtown Rats is a song which has a much darker inspiration than just start of the week moodiness... In this episode of Heard This? We look at the true crime case that inspired the song: The 1979 Grover Cleveland Elementary School shooting, carried out by 16 year old Brenda Spencer. No truer words were spoken about this movie than “So Fucking What.” Jen and Tim welcome Bryan Quinby of Street Fight Radio to talk about a justly forgotten 90s something-or-other called S.F.W.Trace the history of the beer ball! If you want to revisit that scene we mentioned from Sleep With Me, watch it here. Jen was wrong about Juliet, incidentally— she was intended to be about 13 or 14.Romeo was 16 or 17, though, so obviously the play is problematic due to the age gap and Shakespeare is still cancelled. The name of the teenaged girl school shooter Jen failed to recall is Brenda Spencer. She committed the Cleveland Elementary School shooting in 1979, and she is still incarcerated. Welcome to Episode 6 of Blunt Force Trauma! Today's case takes place in January of 1979, when 16 year old Brenda Spencer was simply done with Mondays once and for all! (We've all been there). Although the root of why she perpetrated a mass shooting at a local San Diego elementary school seems to stem more from emotional neglect, rather than a way to liven up a boring day as she claims. Light one up and listen to Brenda's cold and callous attitude toward the gravity of her crimes...it's quite chilling! DISCLAIMER: no children were killed in this story, we felt it imperative to mention that in these sensitive times when school shootings are far too common. This was an unfortunate coincidence in timing, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the Robb Elementary School shooting that took place on May 24th.
This week Erika covers the story of Brenda Ann Spencer. On January 29, 1979 she would become the first female school shooter in America. At the time of the shooting Brenda was only 17 years old and lived with her father across the street from the Grover Cleveland Elementary school in San Diego, California. Brenda would end up killing two innocent men, injuring another, and injuring 8 innocent children that terrifying morning.Erika was drinking a white Exotic Blend from 'Menage a Trois'. It was so good, very refreshing and perfect for spring and summer. Sources:www.allthatisinteresting.com / Brenda Ann Spencer Shot up a School.
