In May of 2014, two young girls lured a third girl into the woods in a park in Waukesha and proceeded to set in motion one of the world's most talked about true crime stories of the last 2 decades. Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier's attempted murder of their friend Peyton Leutner sent shockwaves through Wisconsin, and shed light on the dark side of internet culture, "Creepypastas," and one icon in particular named, Slenderman. Although sensationalistic media focused on Slenderman's influence in the crime, the more important aspects of the story were mainly missed, such as teen and adolescent mental illness, parental control, and the grand scheme issues of criminal justice and mental health care of juveniles. Scott and Mickey discuss the case, how it happened, and hit those deeper issues which continue to be talked about and debated today, almost 10 years after the crime. The opening banter covers a few current WI true crime cases, and 10 of the creepiest roads in the U.S, in which the Badger State is, of course, represented! Last week we talked about Slender Man. If you remember we talked about how he liked to stalk his victims, drive them mentally insane, because it made for an easier kill. Was that the case with Morgan? Today we're talking about the Slender Man stabbings.
In todays episode we dive into the horrible crime committed by two 12 year olds Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier. These two stabbed their close friend Payton Leutner 19 times. They did this all in the name of Slenderman and were under the impression that if they killed her they would become his “proxies” and get to live in his mansion. Luckily Payton miraculously survived and crawled to rescue. This episode of MurdHer covers Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser. These 12 year old girls stabbed their best friend as a sacrifice to the fictional, creepypasta monster named Slenderman. SPOILER ALERT: it didn't work.
This week, Niamh goes over the vicious "Slenderman Stabbings". There have been countless nods in the media to this case, but we need to remember that this was all very real, and Payton Leutner nearly died due to two girls being scared that an internet monster was going to kill their whole family- unless they offered a sacrifice. This month’s episode is a live recording from Brighton! We talk about the Slenderman Stabbings, a case where two 12 year olds attempted to murder their friend because Slenderman (of creepypasta/internet fame) told them to. We discuss the relationship between being a teenage edgelord and murder, Elena makes everyone promise to contact them via ouija board when they die, everyone agrees Richard Dawkins a dick and Jo does a dramatic reading of serial killer fanfiction so there’s something for everyone. As part of the live show we did a raffle in support of RISE, an amazing domestic abuse charity for all people affected by domestic violence in the Brighton/Hove area, they are the only DA service in the UK that supports trans people! Donate to them here: http://www.riseuk.org.uk/ Let us know if you want us to come to your town and do a recording in your living room! Let us know if you wanna sponsor us and give us free makeup and or coffee! Content notes: mental health problems and MH treatment, bullying, attempted murder. There is also a mention of the transphobic murder of a sex worker towards the beginning of the episode.
