Moses Durazo is a Biomagnetic Pair therapy specialist and author who embarked on an unconventional path to holistic wellness.  His journey began 27 years ago with a profound medical experience that challenged his belief in allopathic medicine and the conventional approach to health. Upon discovering a Holistic Health program in college, his perspective shifted toward a holistic view of wellness, drawing inspiration from centuries-old healing traditions rooted in mind, body, and spirit balance. Despite extensive natural medicine knowledge, Moses still faced significant chronic digestive issues. His quest led him to a life-changing modality in Mexico known as Medical Biomagnetic Pair therapy. With a single treatment involving the application of static magnets, his chronic, 4.5-year ailment vanished overnight.  This pivotal experience ignited his passion for pioneering the field of Medical Biomagnetism. In addition to developing a 6-step recalibration protocol, Moses created Harmonic Resonance Sound Baths, an innovative healing approach that combines the therapeutic power of biomagnetism and music. Moses's holistic journey is a testament to the fusion of ancient wisdom and modern innovation, offering a unique path to well-being and self-discovery. I discovered Moses while intuitively guided to explore the healing power of magnets. I had a personal session with him and have been working with the magnets on my own each day since. I am experiencing a lot of energetic shifts personally and receiving strong guidance about the power of magnets yet to be widely discovered to acknowledged by western medicine. Please enjoy this conversation on the power of magnets, bioenergetics, and the shifting paradigm in global healing. May this episode be a gift, an invitation, and a natural medicine to magnetize your life and restore balance.   To discover more of Moses' work and access his books as well as his self-healing magnet protocol, visit: savememagnets.com FOOTNOTES -Dr. Richard Broeringmeyer, medical director of NASA, Magnetic therapy; https://biomagnetismsedona.com/dr-richard-broeringmeyer/ Brian frank NHI biomagnetic pair studies -“Neurologist” was the word I was looking for; “The neurological legacy of psychoanalysis: Freud as a neurologist” - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2646065/ -Freud's use of Hypnosis: “Hypnosis, Medicine and Freud” - https://royalsociety.org/blog/2017/05/hypnosis-medicine-and-freud/ -Bryan Frank NIH Study, “Biomagnetic Pair Therapy and Typhoid Fever”: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29067141/

#AskDrJohnWatts Hair loss due to typhoid fever, will I regrow hair again? | Dr John Watts K Satyanarayana asks: “Sir, three years ago I had a typhoid attack. Soon after I noticed hair loss and hair thinning. What should I do? Please advise In his response, Dr John Watts tells Satyanarayana that after the typhoid attack the body goes into recovery mode. “However, it is likely that during the convalescence period, the scalp does not get enough nutrition support as all the energy/nutrients are taken up by the body for its needs,” he explained. In such a scenario, a lack of nutrients for the hair can lead to hair loss or hair thinning if supplemental nutritional support is not taken to meet the deficiency. He advised Satyanarayana to consider improving nutritional supplements and medication for the treatment of his hair thinning and hair loss condition after consultation with a dermatologist. “Following typhoid, the next six month to one year period is crucial as it is the recovery period. During this period, nutritional deficiency can trigger hair loss conditions. But eventually, you can get back your lost hair with medication with help from your doctor,” he said.

“Mary has died of Typhoid Fever”. Ah, yes. If you are of a certain generation, you remember being met with these abrupt notifications while playing Oregon Trail. While this game taught generations of young people about Western migration in 19th-century America, it also familiarized them with various diseases…and, how to avoid getting run over by wagon wheels. This month, our hosts are exploring the root of the cause – diving into species and subspecies of Salmonella. More about Salmonella: CDC's summary of Salmonella Salmonella Nomenclature Mary Mallon (1869-1938) and the history of typhoid fever Stay tuned for more episodes, posting on the first Thursday of each month. Subscribe to our show wherever you get your podcasts and find more info at weebeastiespodcast.com     The Wee Beasties podcast is a production of Nephros, Inc., a company committed to improving the human relationship with water through leading, accessible technology.  *** SHOW TRANSCRIPT: Christian:  I am back with Dr. Kimothy Smith. Kimothy, welcome back! Kimothy:  Thanks, Christian. What's new? Christian:  Well, I've been combing through the annals of gastroenterology in search of the origin of “Typhoid Mary” and learned a few things I'd like to share. Kimothy:  By all means. What ya got? Christian:  Alright, so check it out, in case you're not current on your NYC history or your only reference for Typhoid fever was that Oregon Trail game back in the late '80s…and this is literally from the Annals of Gastroenterology…I'll throw a link in the show notes – Typhoid Mary was the name eventually given to a woman named, Mary Mallon who lived in NYC in the early 1900s and became notorious as a healthy carrier of Salmonella thypi – the bacterium that causes Typhoid fever. She was an immigrant, not necessarily well off, and was employed as a cook for wealthy families. Now, this was before a vaccine was available and before antibiotics. An investigation had started because there were many people getting sick with a fever, and the investigator trying to track down the source noticed there were pockets of families employing the same cook. Mary was leaving after the infection had occurred to move on to a new family to cook for them. In the end, there were 122 people infected, 5 dead. And that year over 3,000 people in NYC had become infected in 1907 – she was apparently the source. What's interesting is that there was no tracking mechanism in place, so investigations had to be done just by a small group or single man. There was an assumption that a microorganism was suspected of being responsible, but nobody knew why. The investigation really corroborated that hypothesis which eventually came from a team of veterinary scientists. So, in 1880, this guy Daniel Elmer Salmon ended up naming Salmonella typhi as a consequence of this investigation. Kimothy: Sticking with your history bend for a minute, this is not so long after the cholera plague in London. Germ theory was still a controversial thing, they thought it was neighbors. So, go vets! Real doctors treat more than one species. Kimothy:  So, if you haven't inferred already, we're going to give you a snapshot of Salmonella today. Salmonella enterica, specifically. Christian:  Yeah, so…a query sir.  As I was sifting through literature, I didn't see a lot of mention of enterica early in the investigation of Typhoid fever.  Can you summarize how Salmonella enterica became the catch-all for all the varieties of Salmonella? Kimothy:  Yeah, it's a bit unusual because as you said, Christian, the initial outbreak investigation resulted in named in Salmonella typhi and now we have Salmonella enterica. It's important to remember that science naming conventions are like kaleidoscopes – the contents remain the same, but the picture and how it's described change depending on who's holding the instrument. Such has been the reshuffling with Salmonella. Most of the scientific community now breaks Salmonella into two species Salmonella bongori and Salmonella enterica into 6 subspecies and over 2600 serotypes. But essentially it comes down to two groups – Salmonella that causes gastroenteritis and then those that cause enteric fevers. Christian:  Which patient populations are most at risk for acquiring Salmonella? Kimothy:  The CDC estimated that Salmonella causes 1.2 million illnesses and 450 deaths annually in the US.  Anyone can become infected with the bacteria – fecal-oral and food & water are the most common routes. The populations at greatest risk are typical demographic we've discussed for all our opportunistic pathogens – those under the age of 5 and over the age of 65, and those with weakened immune systems. Christian:  And how does it present? Kimothy:  So, the gastrointestinal infection that results when you ingest the bacteria is Salmonellosis, and it presents exactly how you would expect for a pathogen that survives in your GI tract – fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Symptoms manifest within about 12-72 hours and typically last about a week. You can take antibiotics, but most people will be able to recover without pharmaceutical intervention. Typhoid fever is, as you might expect, slightly different.  Patients become symptomatic gradually and once a fever presents it is accompanied by extreme fatigue, usually a skin rash or skin discoloration, headaches, abdominal pain, and constipation. Without medical intervention, the fever can be fatal.  But it can easily be treated with antibiotics, such as azithromycin. Christian:  And if you really believe in preventative medicine folks, you can always get the vaccine.  Also, Typhoid fever shouldn't be confused be typhus, right? Two totally different pathologies. Typhus is caused by Rickettsia, a different gram-negative bacterium that spreads itself around to humans hitching a ride on lice and fleas. I digress. Tell me about Cell morphology and other unique descriptions associated with Salmonella. Kimothy: Gram-negative rods, motile with flagella, about 0.4 - 0.7 micron in size. Christian:  Quick question before I let you go: do both varieties of Salmonella transmit the same? Kimothy:  So, good question. No, they do not. The variety that causes Typhoid fever is spread from human to human only and the variety that results in gastroenteritis is transmitted in food or water. Christian:  Copy that, so we're in the clear for acquiring Typhoid fever a la hospital drinking fountains. Kimothy, as always, thanks so much for the chat today. Kimothy:  You bet, Christian.

Typhoid fever is a food- and water-borne infectious disease that was insidious and omnipresent in Victorian Britain. It was one of the most prolific diseases of the Industrial Revolution. There was a palpable public anxiety about the disease in the Victorian era, no doubt fueled by media coverage of major outbreaks across the nation, but also because Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, died of the disease in 1861. Their son and heir, Prince Albert Edward, contracted and nearly succumbed to typhoid a decade later in 1871. The Filth Disease: Typhoid Fever and the Practices of Epidemiology in Victorian England (U Rochester Press, 2020) shows that typhoid was at the center of a number of critical debates about health, science, and governance. Victorian public health reformers, the book argues, working in central and local government, framed typhoid as the most pressing public health problem in order to persuade local officials to implement sanitary infrastructure to prevent the spread of disease. In this period British epidemiologists uncovered how typhoid is spread via food and water supplies, disrupting the longstanding idea that typhoid was spread via filth. In the process the modern disciple of epidemiology emerged as the chief science of public health. Typhoid was as much a social and political problem as it was a scientific one, and The Filth Disease provides a striking reminder of the cultural context in which infectious diseases strike populations and how scientists study them. The late 1880s and early 1890s were particularly bad for outbreaks of typhoid, which was also known as mountain fever.

At the beginning of 1862, George McClellan was sick with Typhoid Fever, which Lincoln took advantage of and began exercising his authority to get McClellan's plans on paper. After a considerable amount of push and pull, McClellan revealed his plans - doing an end run to Richmond through the York Peninsula. While a bold plan, it left Lincoln nervous. Before the Army could move, however, the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia deterred the Union plan. We will set up the ironclad's story and carry it on in a future episode. Jacob Steere-Williams (College of Charleston) discusses the role of typhoid fever in Victorian (19th century) England as a key reason for the development of epidemiology. The chat begins with some background about typhoid and its effects along with comparisons to other diseases such as cholera and plague. Jacob then surveys how epidemiology developed over the course of the late 19th century and its place in history, discussing how it has been forgotten compared to bacteriology and Germ Theory. At the end, Jacob briefly chats about the place of epidemiology today and the place of England in the study of public health more broadly. In the post-interview section, Merle and Lee have a meta discussion where they reflect upon the numerous episodes over the last few months about late 19th century diseases, pandemics, and public health and what the future of the history of disease might look like.

Mary Mallon emigrated to America as teenager in 1883.  She became famous for being the first person in the Untied States to be identified as an asymptomatic carrier of Typhoid Fever.  Mary is believed to have infected 53 people over a period of time, although it's assumed the number is much higher, and out of those who caught it from Mary, 3 people died. Mary has come to be so strongly identified with the spread of disease that it is now commonly believed she was responsible for hundreds, if not thousands, of deaths. This show takes a more intricate look at Mary and her situation, and what eventually became of her. This month we talk about Mary Mallon, better known as Typhoid Mary or the OG superspreader, an Irish immigrant who was an asymptomatic carrier of typhoid fever and who was forcibly quarantined by the city of New York in the early 1900s. The story often goes that Mary Mallon infected hundreds of people with Typhoid Fever as an act of deliberate murder, which is (surprise!) not true. We discuss Mary’s experience of being quarantined, why she was portrayed as singularly infectious and evil, other individuals who have been named superspreaders, and the idea of the “patient zero” of the AIDS epidemic. Other topics include: a review the experience of having mild coronavirus (0 stars), pandemic memes, licking toilets and 19th century lesbians nicknamed “Uncle”. Our theme song is performed by Killjoys, our DIY band that we do with our pal Ashley! Our EP is out on bandcamp and spotify, please give it a listen! CONTENT NOTES

ORIGINS OF THE GAME (starts at 0:45) Composite of the Harvard-McGill game, courtesy of the McCord Museum at McGill Everything you think you know is wrong. Field and town games were purposely ignored through history, which puts a shroud over our records of these games going on in myriad forms throughout the Middle Ages. The American tradition comes out of England. We track the history of baseball because they're linked and it got there first. "Football" refers to all the soccer- and rugby-like games played with a large ball as opposed to "Handball" which used a smaller ball or "Stickball" from which tradition comes field hockey. Football at Michigan: a guy named William Gailey, who also wrote "The Yellow and the Blue," and also Cal's alma mater, organized these 11-on-11 games that might have been more like soccer. There was also the tradition of "The Rush" which was a violent diag battle where the goal was to throw the other team over their fence. Muscular Christianity and the cultural shift toward a mass appreciation athletics. The athletics movement on campus: students organize sports as they like, create their own athletics association.   Pushball on Ferry Field in 1907. [UM Bentley Library] Rutgers-Princeton: 100% soccer, but the rugby-like game (and things similar to rush) were around. Michigan wanted to play a soccer-like against Cornell but the game was canceled by Cornell. When does it become football? Rules tensions between places that had rugby- or soccer-like traditions but all called it "football." Harvard-McGill play a game of rugby with a round ball and 15-on-15, had a second game scheduled that was 13-on-13, and it's not clear if it was played. "Food poisoning" means they got drunk. Return game is in Montreal, has an oblong ball, is a very plausible argument that it was rugby. Craig thinks it was still 15-on-15 but it was definitely more like football than soccer. Harvard had a hard time finding opponents for their "Boston Rules" game—found Tufts. Walter Camp: a situational extremist, as opposed to the open, moving rugby game. What helped Camp win out was everyone was mad at Dartmouth, the extremist who wanted a game more like The Rush. Banned things like dressing like an orc from Warcraft. 2. THE FIRST GAME (starts at 50:00) A drawing of the first game from the UM Palladium, 1880 [courtesy UM Bentley Library] Camp's rules win out in late 1878, Michigan gets challenged by Racine and delays until next spring. Michigan puts on blue belts and blue hose and heads out to play a timed game of 11-on-11. We discuss the rules and the method of scoring a touchdown. Michigan dominates play, scoring the first TD in the first inning (half) but not converting it despite the Michigan fans and their umpire saying the ball went over the crossbar—like that's never going to happen again. Irving K. Pond scores another TD late and DeTarr makes the extra point good for a 1-0 victory (in modern terms it's 13-0). 3. THE TEAM AND THE TORONTO GAME (starts at 26:04) THREE-QUARTER BACK Edmond H. Barmore (IN): First quarterback in football. Son of a steamboat builder, director of the athletic association, graduated in 1881. Mustache came along. Moved to LA and got into the transfer business. Feted the 1901 team. Studied under Angell, big-time lawyer and civic leader in Detroit. Trustee of Mariner’s Church where I volunteer, where there’s a picture of him. HALFBACK (didn’t make Chi trip): Collins Johnson (GR): Surgeon at Harper’s Hospital (overlooking the grounds where they played Toronto). Then was the district surgeon in GR for the railway. Made breakthroughs in Typhoid Fever at his lab in later life. RUSHER John Chase (AA): Doctor, later General John Chase, Colorado National Guard commander. Dad was one of the first treasurers at Mich. Founded Denver Medical College. Known for leading troops against strikers: Ludlow Massacre was under his men. RUSHER Irving K. Pond (AA): Engineer, son of a state senator. Stanley Maloy discusses his career in Salmonella research, which started with developing molecular tools and is now focused on the role of Salmonella genome plasticity in niche development. He further talks about his role in science entrepreneurship, science education, and working with an international research community. Julie’s Biggest Takeaways: Stanley’s career began when transposon mutagenesis was a new, cutting-edge technique, and he found the best way to learn how to apply a new method was to jump in and try it. Antibiotic resistance has been a problem throughout Stanley’s career. The future may hold new antimicrobials that aren’t necessarily categorized as classical ‘antibiotics,’ but may offer precision therapy against specific infectious agents. Whatever the future holds, it won’t be a single answer: Stanley sees many innovations necessary to deal with the future of antibiotic-resistant infections. Stanley’s current research is in Salmonella genome plasticity and how genomic traits influence the bacterial niche. Where do traits like exotoxins or antibiotic resistance exist in the environment, and how are they transferred to new species to influence disease? Cases of Typhoid Fever in people without known exposure to another diseased person suggest there may be an environmental reservoir. What might it be? Stanley is a big proponent of scientist entrepreneurs and participates with the NSF Innovation Corps to promote early science start ups. In addition to creativity and the scientific process, one characteristic he encourages all entrepreneurs to develop is a good team spirit. Working collaboratively as a team is a very strong sign of success. Stanley believes in the importance of an international science communities, and he practices what he preaches: he works closely with the scientific community of Chile. He began in 1990 by teaching an intensive lab course about techniques, and has developed a decades-long relationship with this community. These relationships allow a dialog, and were the reason Stanley ultimately turned his focus to Salmonella Typhi from Salmonella Typhimurium. Legend: Bird flies at the window, death knocks at the door. According to legend, if a bird crashes into a window in your house and dies from the collision, it is a portent that someone close to you is going to die. Background: Can someone who's passed away send the living messages by manipulating our world and even other living things in it? That's what Eric Robinson says happened to him and his entire family and when you hear the details, you'll have a hard time drawing a different conclusion. Stories: If you can't click on this link, visit our website.  Eric's story starts out with the passing of his mom in 2004 and the events that lead up to that and followed it as well. After that event, she had a fear of birds (ornithophobia) for the rest of her life. She didn't even like to see them flying outside and forbid the use of wallpaper with birds on it everywhere she went.
