The growing lion population, necessitating larger territories, has resulted in greater conflict with humans and accidental deaths. There is also the spectre of disease and genetic weakening due to excessive inbreeding. Many experts suggest translocation to Juno in Madhya Pradesh. We look at the latest contribution to the rewilding discussion with this book by Jonny Hansen. See more about the book Living with Lynx here. Living with Lynx Sharing Landscapes with Big Cats, Wolves and Bears, reviewed This book is an enjoyable read, with a thoughtful, and well researched line of thought and interesting ideas explored. Hanson has strong credentials to write a book on this topic, and anyone who has studied, and tried to even see Snow Leopards also gets a few bonus points too (yes we are fans of Peter Matthiessen's own classic about the Snow Leopard). Hanson has structured the book well, and aims to look at the debate, and arguments from all perspectives. With the now, near mythological, tale about how wolves saved, changed Yellowstone, he also does a good job of unpacking this particular case study. Like all good to great stories, there is always more than meets the eye, and while wolves helped, the beaves, and various other factors were also important too. At the same time Hanson does a good, and thought provoking analysis of what it feels like to be fearful of wild animals. While one can intellectually argue for the value of wolves, and other apex predators, would you really want one popping out in your backyard. Hanson, relevantly discusses the impact of foxes killing your own chickens, and wilder, more savage dogs charging towards your loved ones, and the emotions, fear, and even post event trauma it can create. Hanson also touches on the interesting developments taking place in Scotland, where the discussion around Lynx is at a much further stage than say Ireland or England for example. Similarly, with beavers, there have been, for better or worse, unsanctioned releases too. With all of these points, and other aspects of the book, Hanson presents an informed and informative addition to the rewilding debate. He successfully conveys the complexity of the issues to be grasped, particularly trying to establish provenance or not. Did lynx ever actually previously live in Ireland for example? Possibly, but no one has yet been able to decide definitively either way yet. This then raises the question of whether this would be a reintroduction of a species, or the arrival of something completely new. Clearly these are not just semantics, as the implications could be very different depending on whether they were ever actually here before or not. All of these issues make for an interesting and thought provoking read. At times we did feel that Hanson was slightly giving both sides of the debate, without actually working out what the best solution was. However this is also clearly because no one really knows yet. Much like the conversation about bringing back the woolly mammoth, and if we even should do so, similarly wilding, rewilding and the whole restoration of nature is a complex and fluid topic. All of which before you even factor in global warming and climate change (hint, yes it is is happening, regardless of what any fossil fuel back lobbyists might be trying to get US leaders to tell us), which of course then change potential habitats and suitability for different animals anyway. A good book, well worth reading, and yes, the kids loved the cover, so why not do what we can to encourage and support more lynx coming to habitat near us. Coexisting with carnivores | Jonny Hanson | TEDxQueensUniversityBelfast - YouTube More about Living with Lynx This book investigates a vital and controversial question for conservation and rewilding in Britain and Ireland: could and should we learn to live with lynx, wolves and bears again? We travel back in time, around the world and into the future to explore this contested topic. The author delves deep into the human psyche, considering not only his own mixed feelings about large carnivore reintroductions but also why people have such polarised perspectives on top predators. He brings his unique combination of expertise on snow leopards - and their relationship with humans - ...

Is it possible for humans and large carnivores to share landscapes without conflict? What happens when predators like wolves, bears, and lynx return to areas where they've been absent for centuries? How do we balance the ecological benefits of apex predators with the real concerns of rural communities and farmers? We're trying to answer these questions with our returning guest Dr Jonny Hanson, author of ‘Living with Lynx: Sharing Landscapes with Big Cats, Wolves and Bears.'Drawing on his unique background in both farming and conservation, Jonny brings a nuanced perspective to this often polarising topic. He recounts his experiences growing up in Malawi where wildlife existed alongside urban areas, and how this shaped his understanding of human-wildlife conflict. The conversation explores the urban-rural divide in attitudes towards large carnivores, with Jonny pointing out that 'everybody loves a large carnivore when it's somewhere else' – a phenomenon he calls 'biological NIMBYism.' We also examine how compensation schemes for livestock losses often fail to deliver the expected outcomes due to bureaucracy and delays, turning farmers with positive attitudes into fierce opponents of predator reintroduction. In the episode, we also tackle difficult ethical questions about lethal control, the use of technology in managing human-wildlife conflict, and the philosophical meaning of "wildness" in our modern world. Jonny emphasises that while the ecological benefits of reintroducing large carnivores are important, we shouldn't overlook the emotional and philosophical dimensions – the sense of wonder that comes from knowing these animals exist in our landscapes, even if we never see them. We conclude the episode by attempting to predict if the reintroduction of predators to Britain and Ireland will happen in the coming decades.Buy Jonny's Book

Dr. Jonny Hanson is an environmental social scientist, conservationist, and former community farmer. He's also the author of Living with Lynx, Sharing Landscapes with Big Cats, Wolves, and Bears. He spent months traveling Europe and the United States learning about the real-life challenges of reintroducing apex predators to landscapes, and how to make coexistence successful for everyone involved.Today, we discuss Jonny's travels, stories, and lessons learned. And of course, we begin with “why reintroduce apex predators in the first place”. As an environmental social scientist, Jonny spends much of his time learning how to bridge the gaps in how different communities consider living with predators, and by the time we were done, I felt more confident than ever that we can and should allow these magnificent animals back into our landscapes. This episode is full of amazing insights, and Jonny seems to be a quote machine. There were so many well stated tidbits throughout that I know I'm going to use in the future. Not only that, but you'll get to hear how Jonny actually bred mosquitos for money, and how that influenced him. More recently, social media influencers have adopted the trend and are becoming known for owning these wild animals, which they display as symbols of power in a bid to gain more followers. There are said to be hundreds of domestic felines in Pakistan. Although animal rights organisations denounce the mistreatment of these big cats, they admit that the legal penalties are inadequate. FRANCE 24's Shahzaib Wahlah and Sonia Ghezali report, with the collaboration of Talha Saeed.

The English countryside is often associated with many things, rivers, lakes, moors, hedgehogs, but not large predators. The largest official remaining predator in the UK is the badger.  While you might not want to back one into a corner, they're not about to go on a wild killing spree.  However, several locations in the UK report continued sightings of big cats.  Is there a hidden native cat roaming the moors of Cornwall?  Many people think they have spotted them, though the film footage is often as grainy and unreliable as people claiming to have filmed bigfoot.  Take a listen and see what you think is behind all of the big cat reports in the UK.

A local Pharmacist named Dr. Simba who talks to big cats. This is the kind of storyline usually reserved for Hollywood. Dr. Simba Witz is the CEO of the Central Florida Animal Reserve. The big cat sanctuary is run entirely by volunteers. The sanctuary neither breeds its animals or operates for profit, "If you're coming here, you're not coming here because you're padding someone's salary. You're coming here because these are the monies we use to provide food, provide medical care," says Dr. Witz.    The facility opened in 2017. About a quarter of the budget comes from guided tours, "If someone is going to be serious about the challenges these species face. Then, we have to start where we all agree which is we want these animals out in the wild," says Dr. Simba. The challenges are also financial. If you think meat at the grocery store is getting expensive, try buying it by the ton, "We have all experienced a little touch of inflation in the last couple of years," Dr. Simba says with a hint of sarcasm.    When Dr. Simba walks tours around the collection of tigers, lions, and other large charismatic megafauna you will hear him making a distinct chuffing sound. Then, he says, "I see you." He says the felines don't understand the words, but he feels they perceive his intention. The chuffing sound can take some practice, "New volunteers spend a lot of time drooling," Dr. Simba says.   If you would like to book a tour for your family or corporation, you can find more information on the Central Florida Animal Reserve website, https://cflar.org/. Today's bonus episode is a real treat, because we're going on safari! Whether you've dreamt of spotting the Big Five - lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo - or exploring the more hidden gems of the wild, there's so much to uncover. And what better way to do it than with one of the world's top wildlife filmmakers, making his return to the podcast - it's Gordon Buchanan.A safari is more than just a holiday—it's a journey into nature, where you can see some of the planet's most awe-inspiring animals up close, in their natural habitats. When we think of safaris, some of the most iconic destinations immediately come to mind. There's Kenya's Maasai Mara, famous for its open savannahs and incredible amount of wildlife. It's in Kenya that you can witness one of nature's most jaw-dropping spectacles—the Great Migration, when every year typically between July and October, over a million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles make a perilous journey from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Mara in Kenya, searching for fresh grazing lands. It's the perfect time to witness dramatic river crossings and heart-stopping predator-prey interactions. In Tanzania, the Serengeti offers a similar view, with endless plains stretching to the horizon, while Botswana's Okavango Delta gives you a different kind of safari experience, with its winding waterways and lush landscapes where you can spot animals like hippos and crocodiles. But as Gordon and I discuss on the episode today, you don't need to go to Africa to enjoy an incredible safari. Sri Lanka's Yala National Park is a fantastic place to see leopards, elephants, and even sloth bears—Gordon has had some great encounters there. In India, you can track the majestic Bengal tiger through dense jungles, and in Madagascar, you'll find unique species like lemurs and chameleons. And don't forget other African countries like Namibia, Zambia, and even beyond to South America's Pantanal in Brazil, where jaguars are the stars of the show. The great thing about safaris is that they can be tailored to all kinds of budgets. Regular listeners of this podcast may know that I have a special affinity for cats—house cats, certainly, but also the magnificent wild cats that still roam the American West. So when I learned recently that in my home state of Colorado, it's still legal for trophy hunters to shoot hundreds of these beautiful creatures every year, I was horrified. Thankfully, Colorado's big cats have a formidable champion in their corner: longtime animal welfare activist and author Wayne Pacelle. Wayne is one of the people behind a ballot initiative (Cats Aren't Trophies) that will be put before voters this November to outlaw this practice, along with the trapping of bobcats for fur. When I found out about this initiative in a conversation with Wayne last Spring, I offered my support and immediately asked him to come on the podcast to talk about it, as well as his other work around the country.  When it comes to the evolution of human culture—an overarching theme on this podcast—there are few things that speak as loudly as our treatment of other sentient beings and the wild ecosystems of the planet we share. It's a topic that is very close to my heart, and I can think of few people as well versed in this conversation than Wayne. He has had a remarkable career fighting for better treatment of animals—whether in our homes, in our agricultural systems, or in the wild, leading several animal rights organizations, and authoring two bestselling books, The Bond and The Humane Economy. Enjoy this conversation, spread the word, and if you live in Colorado, vote Yes on Prop 127 in November!

The Ethics of Scientist-Animal Selfies: An Eye-Opening Conversation with Dr. Cassie Freund

Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 27, 2024 52:07

As early as the second episode of the Fancy Scientist podcast, I've been talking about the negative impacts  of "animal selfies.” This refers to when people post photos of themselves with an exotic animal. Although selfies are new in the digital age of photography, photos like these are not. For decades, private zoos and individuals have made money by keeping exotic animals often in horrific conditions and getting people to pose with them for photos. These are most often baby mammals (think tiger, lion, and bear cubs ala Tiger King), but can also be birds, reptiles, and fully adult mammals. While operations like these are clearly bad for animals and have nothing to do with conservation once you understand how they work (read Is Cub Petting Conservation for Big Cats?), what's less clear is when scientists pose with their study species for photos. I totally get it! Being with a wild animal is an amazing opportunity and you want to capture it in a photograph (I am guilty of this myself), but what happens when we share those images? We've all seen those images of researchers posing with their study subjects, and while it might seem harmless, research has shown that this can actually encourage people to engage in unethical or even illegal wildlife interactions. It's safe to say that this has been a pet peeve of mine for some time. Photos like those are pervasive throughout the scientific community, even when advertising our career to others and I've been trying to spread the word. .A couple of months ago, a story went viral on X (formerly Twitter) where people took wild bear cubs from a tree just for selfies. I tweeted not only about this, but about how scientists need to stop posting photos of themselves with wildlife so people don't get the misconception that it's ever okay to do something like this. I also emphasized that studies show that photos like those make people want to engage in animal selfies. This tweet gained considerable attention, one of which was from Dr. Cassie Freund, the director of science communication at the Frost Science Museum in Miami, who tweeted back that that was her research! . This fortuitous interaction led me to ask her  for an interview in this podcast  to talk about her research on scientists taking selfies with animals, especially primates, and how it has  been shown to negatively influence public behavior and perceptions, making people less likely to understand the endangered status of these animals. On this podcast, she discusses  the results of her and other studies, which found that even providing captions trying to explain the "proper permissions" obtained to handle animals with research permits and as a professional  don't mitigate the negative impact of those kinds of photos on the public. Additionally, Cassie has a fascinating background in primate behavioral research, and is a strong science writer and editor with over five years of experience telling engaging stories about the world around in outlets like Mongabay, Massive Science, and Hakai Magazine.Cassie's insights were so valuable, and I know this is a topic that many of you are passionate about as well. I encourage you to share this episode with your scientist friends and colleagues - let's all do our part to raise awareness and change the narrative around how we present wildlife on social media.Specifically, we go over:Cassie's background in orangutan conservation and rainforest researchThe surprising findings from her studies on how people perceive images of scientists with their study subjectsTips for effective science communication that prioritizes animal welfare and conservationChallenges of navigating social media as a scientist who wants to share their workReal-world examples of both positive and negative wildlife-related social media postsAnd more!I'm Dr. Stephanie Manka (formerly Schuttler), a wildlife biologist of nearly 20 yrs with 20+ peer-reviewed scientific publications, author of the book Getting a Job in Wildlife Biology: What It's Like and What You Need to Know (https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Job-Wildlife-Biology-What/dp/B08JDYXS4G/) and founder of Fancy Scientist. In the summer of 1978, a strange series of events began to unfold for rural residents of northeastern Ohio. While enjoying a quiet evening at their rural home near Minerva, the Cayton family and their grandchildren witnessed a large, hairy, bipedal creature peering through their kitchen window. This creature, described as standing over 7 feet tall with glowing red eyes, sparked fear and curiosity, prompting the family to report their sightings to local authorities. Following the Cayton family's report, the Minerva area became a hotbed of Bigfoot research and investigation. Numerous additional sightings were reported in the surrounding woods and hills, with various tracks and other physical evidence purportedly found. However, that isn't all that this "classic" case appears to have entailed, as a deeper look into the story reveals sightings of mysterious large cats alongside "gorillas" in Ohio's history, as well as alleged connections to UFO sightings made by some area residents, and much more.
