Typhoid Mary has inspired books, movies, and even a Marvel character, but the history of the Irish woman behind the name is less well known. Mary Mallon was born in County Tyrone in the late 19th century before emigrating to the US. While she initially enjoyed a successful career as a cook, she became the central figure in a major scandal when she was accused of spreading typhoid. This podcast tells her story. This podcast is the first episode of Season II of "Transatlantic," a new show I make with historian Damian Shiels on Irish-American history. In 1907, George Soper located the cause of a typhoid outbreak in New York City: a cook named Mary Mallon. Mary didn't know it, but each and every meal she cooked carried a small chance for her clients to come down with the disease. Finding out the truth could cost Mary her job…and her freedom. Mary Mallon aka "Typhoid Mary" is a macabre figure who spread disease and death everywhere she went. But there's a lot more depth and humanity to Mary's history than this. In the late 1800s, Mary Mallon was a cook for wealthy families in New York City. She thought her job was going well; her clients seemed pleased and she had a reputation as an exceptional chef. But then, the family members started getting sick, and Mary had no idea that she was the cause. Keep up with us on Instagram @serialkillerspodcast! Have a story to share? Wykład red. Adama Szostkiewicz, Uniwersytet Trzeciego Wieku Collegium Civitas, 25 maja 2020 [0h58min] https://wszechnica.org.pl/wyklad/mechanizm-wykluczania-spolecznego-na-przykladzie-epidemii-i-innych-ekstremalnych-zdarzen-cz-1/ Red. Adam Szostkiewicz podczas wykładu zarejestrowanego w ramach Uniwersytetu Trzeciego Wieku Collegium Civitas analizuje reakcje społeczne, jakie wyzwoliła epidemia koronawirusa. Prelegent omawia je w odniesieniu do historycznych przypadków zarazy i innych ekstremalnych zdarzeń. W ostatniej części wystąpienia prelegent wskazuje wyzwania społeczne, przed jakimi rządy i społeczeństwa postawiła epidemia koronawirusa. Do takich red. In 1900, the life expectancy in Dublin was a mere 49 years, a stark indicator of the city's dire living conditions. The Victorian city was notorious for its filth and disease, which proved an ideal breeding ground for Typhoid. This episode explores how Dublin battled with this deadly disease for decades. This journey takes you through the Victorian sewage system and explains why Dublin's shellfish was lethal.Based on an interview with Dr. Carly Collier, we uncover the reasons why Typhoid was rampant in Dublin. She details the appalling living conditions of the time, where overcrowding and contaminated food created a minefield of dangers and risks. We also discuss how Typhoid was eventually eradicated. This aspect of the episode begins with 19th-century medical treatments such as bloodletting and progresses to the development of effective vaccines and antibiotics in the 20th century. To finish what is a fascinating show, we also discuss Ireland's most famous Typhoid patient - Mary Mallon, AKA Typhoid Mary.Carly is one of the team behind the Typhoidland exhibition running in the Royal College of Physicians on Kildare Street.Check out the exhibition: https://typhoidland.org/exhibitions/dublin-2024/contours-of-a-taboo/Their free audio tour is available to download: https://typhoidland.org/walking-tourSubscribe to my new show Transatlantic: An Irish American History Podcast https://linktr.ee/transatlanticpod Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/irishhistory. In this hauntingly evocative episode, the ferryman, brought to life with the profound resonance of Dan Fogler's voice, guides a soul whose legacy is as complex as it is misunderstood. Mary Mallon, known to history as Typhoid Mary, voiced by Therese McLaughlin, steps aboard, her story a chilling reminder of the fine line between victim and villain, between innocence and culpability. As the vessel navigates the murky waters of moral ambiguity, Mary recounts her life, marked by an invisible specter that cast a long shadow over her existence. This "shadow man," a personification of death and disease, becomes a constant companion, a dark figure lurking in the peripheries of her vision, a harbinger of the outbreaks that follow in her wake. In this episode, we delve into the depths of Mary's psyche, exploring the experience of being branded a pariah, the first known asymptomatic carrier of typhoid fever in the United States. Quarantined for nearly three decades, Mary's existence became a living testament to the fear and misunderstanding surrounding infectious diseases– a dread that is alive and well today. But beneath the surface of this tragic tale lies a deeper question: Was her "shadow man" merely a monster, the embodiment of the death she unwittingly spread, or was he her ally, a warning of the unseen dangers she posed? As Mary reflects on her life, she reveals the anguish and defiance of a woman caught in the gears of the Industrial Revolution, witnessing first-hand the suffering of workers and the impoverished. Did she weaponize herself against the wealthy families she served, turning her condition into an instrument of vengeance or retribution for the injustices she observed? This is a formal request for all Disaster Hour listeners: Please wash your hands after defecation, urination, and all other bathroom activities. In this one, Ian and Liv talk about the case of Mary Mallon, aka Typhoid Mary, who was a silent carrier of typhoid fever in the early 1900s. Spoiler alert: hand washing could've saved lives. Literally. Also, Liv was a disease-ridden child. Ian is still playing Lego Fortnite.
// Quellen & Shownotes // - Brooks, J., The sad and tragic life of Typhoid Mary, CMAJ. 1996 Mar 15; 154(6): 915–916. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1487781/ - Connolly, K., How Typhoid Mary left a trail of scandal and death, BBC News, 20. Happy Spooky Wednesday, everyone! For the second week of 2023's True Crime January, we're talking about Typhoid Mary. Mary Mallon was a dirty, dirty girl. Literally. She didn't wash her hands. She is largely regarded as the first asymptotic person with typhoid in the USA. And as a result, people got sick. And when she was told she was making people sick, her response was to dip. After being chased around the New York area, she was found out and brought to North Brother Island... kicking and screaming. And that attitude may have kept her hanging around the island long after her passing. What do you think? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/leftofskeptic/support

Mary Mallon was a simple woman. An Irish immigrant who landed in America who just wanted to live out her passion of being a chef and make her favourite dish, peach ice cream. However, every time Mary would change employers, she seemed to leave behind a string of death and illnesses. Typhoid Mary - real name Mary Mallon - was the first ever asymptomatic carrier of typhoid to be identified. A cook for wealthy New York families, her name was published on 15th June, 1907, when sanitation engineer George Soper exposed her as the source of numerous outbreaks of the disease across the City. Of particular concern was Mallon's habit of preparing fresh peach ice cream for her clients on a Sunday. “No better way could be found for a cook to cleanse her hands of microbes and infect a family,” Soper concluded. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly ask if Mallon was treated unfairly by the authorities due to her class and circumstances; explain how she came to be quarantined - twice - on North Brother Island; and question how she possibly found herself working back in kitchens, preparing food, even after her reputation as a carrier of typhoid had been well publicised… Further Reading: • ‘THE WORK OF A CHRONIC TYPHOID GERM DISTRIBUTOR' (George A. I want you to think back for just a second about the early days of COVID. It was a scary time! The government responded by mandating schools and businesses to close, they ordered curfews, shelter in place, and stay at home orders. And we all had to get on board too, because you could be spreading it and not even know! But what if the health department, and the police, showed up at your home and said, “We think you're spreading COVID, and you need to come with us…” Absolutely no one would stand for that! Right? Well, in the 19th century, government officials had started to realize that public health was a thing they needed to be concerned with. Germ theory had started to take root and people were being asked to adopt all sorts of cleanliness practices that no one thought twice about before. So they were kind of starting to figure out the “why,” but what to do about it was still notfully baked.Because in 1906, the health department and police did show up at someone's door, take them away, and force them to quarantine for a cumulative 26 years on an island in the East River in New York City. This is the story of Mary Mallon, otherwise known as Typhoid Mary.Follow along on Instagram or TikTok @agoodnightforamurder or www.agoodnightforaurder.com, and subscribe where ever you listen to Podcasts.

Typhoid fever is a disease that, in the United States, is synonymous with Mary Mallon—a woman better known as Typhoid Mary, who infected New Yorkers with typhoid in the early 1900s. But typhoid is not just a thing of the past. Across the globe every single year, it kills over 100,000 people. And over the last few years, even in countries like the US where typhoid hasn't been a concern for generations, the number of reported cases is climbing. So why is typhoid making a comeback? And what are scientists doing to stop it? For a transcript of the episode, head to: http://www.acs.org/tinymatters

In the late 1800s, an Irish immigrant in New York City made ends meet by working as a cook for wealthy families. But wherever Mary Mallon went, typhoid fever followed. As more people succumbed to the deadly illness, a man named George Soper set out to investigate. By 1907, fever wasn't the only thing tailing Typhoid Mary. Learn more about your ad choices.
