OK, I was going to wait till Sunday like normal but I suck!! Enjoy this late early release!!! Tune in to 170 and if Reba's "I'm a Survivor" isn't playing in your head by the end of Amy's story then something didn't TRIGGER. Hear about how Betty Broderick did not get away with the murder of her cheating husband and his mistress. Betty's story may of not been fair but murder is still ILLEGAL
Fear of retaliation keeps many people trapped in high conflict relationships long after they know they need to leave. Emotional explosions, smear campaigns, threats involving children, financial punishment, legal warfare — the threat of what might happen when you finally say the words can feel more paralyzing than staying. The Betty Broderick case is an extreme example, but the dynamic it illustrates — unmanaged emotions, all-or-nothing thinking, and escalating revenge — shows up in milder forms in relationships every day.Bill Eddy, LCSW, JD, and Megan Hunter, MBA, co-founders of the High Conflict Institute, walk through what a safer, stepwise exit actually looks like — and why an abrupt in-person announcement is the most dangerous approach. They cover the biggest mistakes people make when leaving, how to document behavior and prepare for false allegations before they happen, and what courts and police actually respond to when you present your situation. It's All Your Fault is produced by TruStory FM.Full Show Notes & ResourcesSubmit Questions | Bookstore | WebsiteWatch this episode on YouTubeImportant Notice: Our discussions focus on behavioral patterns rather than diagnoses. Three of our past subjects died this spring. Betty Broderick, who served 35 years for the 1989 La Jolla murders of her ex-husband Dan and his new wife Linda. Raynella Dossett Leath, the Tennessee nurse twice tried in the deaths of her district attorney husband and her second husband, and ultimately cleared. And Claudine Longet, the French-born singer whose 1976 shooting of Olympic skier Spider Sabich in Aspen ended in a thirty-day sentence served largely on weekends. Kouri Richins was convicted of murdering her husband in one of the most unusual cases in recent true crime history — a Utah mother who poisoned Eric Richins with fentanyl, then wrote a children's book about his death and appeared on television to promote it. According to investigators, that promotion is part of what put the case back under the microscope. The jury convicted her on all counts in three hours. But the story that doesn't end with a verdict belongs to the three boys she left behind. They were 9, 7, and 5 when their father died. They are preteens now, living with Eric's family, carrying the weight of two losses — one parent taken by what a jury determined was murder, one taken by a prison sentence that will likely define the rest of their childhoods.True Crime Today examines what research and history tell us about children in this exact position. We look at betrayal trauma — the psychological damage specific to children whose protector was also their threat — and we compare what happened to the young children left behind in two cases that rhyme with this one: Susan Wright's kids, who were absorbed into their father's family after her 2003 conviction and have never spoken publicly, and Betty Broderick's sons, who grew up divided on whether their mother should ever leave prison. What separates Kouri Richins from every comparison is the book. She wrote it. She promoted it. She used her sons' grief as the vehicle. And according to trial testimony, it may be part of what put her in prison. Those boys will search their own story forever. There is no children's book for what comes next.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The verdict is in. Kouri Richins is guilty of charges that she poisoned her husband with fentanyl. But this part that still lands like a gut punch — She wrote a children's book about his death and went on television to promote it. The jury took three hours. Three hours to convict her on all counts. Apparently, they didn't need much time. But verdicts don't raise kids. Her three sons were 9, 7, and 5 when Eric Richins died. They're preteens now, living with his family, trying to grow up under the weight of something most adults couldn't carry — a father gone, a mother in prison, and somewhere out there, a book she wrote using their grief as the raw material. This episode isn't about Kouri. It's about what research and case history actually tell us about children who land in exactly this position. We look at betrayal trauma — the specific psychological damage that happens when the person who was supposed to protect you was also the threat — and we pull the thread on two cases that rhyme with this one: Susan Wright's kids, quietly absorbed into their father's family after her 2003 conviction, and Betty Broderick's sons, who grew up split down the middle on whether their mother deserved to die in prison.Kouri's case has one element none of the comparisons do. The book. She wrote it. She sold it. She used her sons' loss as the vehicle — and according to testimony, it's part of what put her away. Those boys will be searching their own story for the rest of their lives. There's no chapter for what comes next.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Donna Adelson & Betty Broderick Parallels in Narcissistic Courtroom Theater In the Trial of Donna Adelson, many courtroom observers can't help but notice echoes of infamous cases from the past. One of the most striking comparisons? Betty Broderick, the once “perfect wife and mother” who shocked America in 1989 when she murdered her ex-husband and his new wife. Just like Donna Adelson, Betty positioned herself as the victim — rewriting the narrative to justify her actions and refusing to show remorse. This segment from Hidden Killers Live with Tony Bruski, Stacy Cole, and Todd Michaels takes viewers back to Betty Broderick's testimony, dissecting her chilling cadence and matter-of-fact storytelling. The panel explores how Betty framed her double murder not as a crime but as an act of “self-preservation.” They note how narcissistic defendants often try to control perception — a trait now being scrutinized in Donna Adelson's own demeanor in court. The conversation also highlights the performative aspect of these trials: the calculated facial expressions, the selective memory lapses, and the unsettling calm in recounting horrific acts. Betty's testimony, at times almost rehearsed, feels eerily familiar when placed alongside Donna's tightly controlled courtroom posture. Why does this matter? Because jurors don't just weigh evidence — they watch behavior. The Adelson family matriarch's strategy to present herself as the protector of her children is undermined by a long trail of wiretaps, coded conversations, and now, the shadow of cases like Betty Broderick's. History shows that narcissists often overestimate their ability to manipulate a jury. This true crime analysis doesn't just revisit Betty Broderick — it uses her story as a psychological mirror to understand Donna Adelson, offering a deeper look into how narcissism and courtroom theatrics collide in high-stakes trials.

Betty and Dan Broderick were a golden couple in San Diego, CA. He, a powerful attorney; she, a devoted, fun-loving wife and mother of four. But when Dan turned 40 he became a cliche. He bought a Corvette, fell for his much younger legal assistant, and left Betty after 16 years of marriage. Their bitter six-year divorce became the most contentious in San Diego County history, a battle over money, custody, and control. On November 5, 1989, it ended in shocking violence when Betty walked into the couple's home and killed Dan and his new wife, Linda, as they slept, turning a local divorce drama into one of the most infamous true crime cases of the century.Listen to all three parts ad-free on PatreonToday's snack: Twix bitesSources:https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/5565-Coral-Reef-Ave-La-Jolla-CA-92037/16857585_zpid/ Betty and Dan's househttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bl2gx4wafQs Dan's home in Balboa ParkBroderick, Betty. Emily revisits her conversation with Criminal Defense Attorney Jack Earley to discuss his experience representing Betty Broderick during her murder trial. In 1989, Betty shot and killed her ex-husband and his new wife inside their San Diego home. Betty never denied pulling the trigger, yet she claimed that the cold-blooded murder resulted from years of abuse that drove her to a breaking point. Dan recounts his experience with Betty and details what it was like to work on such a high-profile crime at the time. Two individuals brought together with youthful passion, blossoming into comfort and stability, the hope that they will grow old together. In her youth, Elizabeth Broderick was the apple of Daniel's eye and together, they planned to build a life filled with love, dreams, and shared moments. But over time, the foundation of their love began to crack. Betty, no longer the object of Daniel's affection, felt herself fade into the background. What was once adoration turned to neglect, and Betty's insecurity grew into a suffocating bitterness. The woman she had once been seemed lost, overshadowed by the fear of being forgotten. In the anguish of feeling discarded, Betty's pain spiraled into rage into one final, desperate act—a shot to the heart—and the murder of two lives. Episode 179 and it's a been a while for the ol' Graveyard crew. This time the crew is taking a bit of a dive into the sordid (and sometimes sexy!) world of 1990s made for TV true crime movies, and this one is based on the Betty Broderick story featuring the ultimate woman scorned who was driven (literally) to kill her husband and her younger replacement.
While it's seemingly common for marriage to end in divorce, how common is it for divorce to end in murder? After a hostile marriage and a bitter divorce, Betty Broderick killed her ex-husband, Dan, and his new wife, Linda. In court, Betty never denied killing the couple, however, she argued that years of battles and abuse drove her to that deadly breaking point. Criminal Defense Attorney Jack Earley represented Betty Broderick during the sensational trial. He discusses Betty's bitter marriage and divorce and reflects on his work during the high-profile case. Jack Earley is a Certified Criminal Law Specialist by the State Bar of California. He is the founding President of the Orange County Criminal Defense Bar Association and an associate professor at the University of California, Irvine. He previously served as President of California Attorneys for Criminal Justice and currently serves as a co-chair for the CACJ Death Penalty Committee. Learn more about your ad choices. Author N. Leigh Hunt joins the podcast and talks about his book "I Don't Like Mondays: The True Story Behind America's First Modern School Shooting". This book uncovers key details behind the 1979 school shooting at Cleveland Elementary School, in the San Carols community of San Diego, CA. On the morning of January 29, 1979, 16 y.o. Brenda Spencer shot several elementary children and adults, killing principal Burton Wragg and custodian Mike Suchar, who both died trying to help the children. Spencer infamously said "I don't like Mondays" when asked why she committed the murders. Spencer pled guilty to two counts of murder and assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to 35-life in prison. The Boomtown Rats released a song in July 1979 with the title "I Don't Like Mondays" which was very controversial and still popular in the UK. N. Leigh Hunt spent years researching and uncovering shocking details from officers, investigators, and lost police dispatches. It was the talk of the town. Betty Broderick was a socialite who appeared to live the perfect life until it all came crashing down in a bitter public divorce and a double homicide. Broderick would end up standing trial for the murders of her ex-husband and his new wife after they were found dead in their San Diego home. This week's Court TV Podcast takes a deep dive into this case that would raise important questions on a woman's role in society and equal rights and protection under the law with an audio edition of the original true crime series Judgment with Ashleigh Banfield. This is Judgment of Betty Broderick. To see the full 1991 retrial of Betty Broderick, click here.
